Does this phone have problem with GPS/GLONASS? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I got the device yesterday the GPS locked just fine. Then I saw there was an update and I thus downloaded it and flashed it via Odin as I find that easy than doing OTA, besides I was rooted!
The thing is, after the software update I rooted the phone again, by installing SuperSU from Play and updating the binary files and all that, then under SuperSU app it asked whether I want to disable KNOX or not, I obviously hit on Yes. And I think since then the problem has started. The GPS is not getting any lock. It can see 26-28 satellites but can't lock on to a single one! Before that I was getting more or less okay locks, around 8-10 sats out of 26.
I tried Faster Fix, didn't work, I unrooted by the SuperSU app option, nothing! Now finally I master wiped everything again, and flashed the ROM, and now GPS is working again! However I am not rooted as of this moment.
There is no doubt that this is a software problem, but the question is, how can I fix this? I have to depend heavily on GPS due to my line of work, I can't live without it.
Is it the ROM? I am using the latest 4.4.2 ROM of UAE. Should I move to some other ROM? I am sure I am not the first one who faced this problem, so I would really like some opinions on this.
Thanks in advance.

So you mean the cause of the problem is rooting?
Try re-rooting to see if it works.

Nah, root should not have anything to do GPS lock, at least not by any measurable margin.
But now I am seeing lots of YouTube videos, and I am confident that Note 3 has some GPS problems after all.
See these videos,

Something is wrong with GPS with this phone, should be software I believe, but what I don't understand why there isn't a fix for this!
PS: Anyway, what is the latest firmware version at this moment?

Tried it yesterday mate. Found it on YouTube. Didn't do anything good.
After testing for a long while all I can say that this phone is very sensitive to GPS locks! Right now I am having locks of 8-10 sats/21 sats, and that too with 20 feet accuracy, indoor. But the very next moment there's no GPS lock at all. But one thing is reassuring that outside, under open sky, whatever the circumstances are it will be locked just fine, more than fine actually, but the problem happens indoor.
This certainly was not the case with my previous Samsungs, be it the Note 2 or S4. The day GLONASS was introduced it was a dream come true for me, but this phone's performance is somewhat disappointing.
I needn't to say anything, all those video links I posted above are clearly mentioning the issue.

After Flashing to Overcome 1.2.1....GPS is not working correctly.

Ever since I flashed to Overcome 1.2.1 the GPS has been VERY wonky and just plain WRONG. Maps says that I am in the next TOWN which is a good ways away.
GPS Locks are extremely few as well and takes forever to lock on to.
Can anyone else confirm this and or help?
Bumping this up.
When you flashed, did you wipe your cache? With a new rom it always takes a while to reaquire your location. I use the app HereIAm2 from the market to get that first position lock after a rom flash.
Yes I did wipe the caches. Will try that app out if it is free.
Thanks.
EDIT: Noticed that the compass seems to be very inaccurate as well. Weird.

Oh well, that's the least of my probs;-/
i have installed OC 1.2.1 and at one point the whole tab became very sluggish....and all sort of issues appeared such as slow browsing.......then the tab would simply freeze! Reboot did not help at all....
I have since installed OC 1.2.3 with the new kernel and it went ok-ish. But today after rebooting i have all sort of errors (broken messaging service, when i click on the wifi tab to switch on, it says 'error'.etc).
I wonder if others have this sort of probs. I cannot understand how it can work fine for a few hours and then.....kkkkkkkk.
I have the UK tab version with firmware JK5; Also cannot figure it out why it does not show 'overcome v1.2.3 on the build number...it still shows v1.2.1, kernel overcome 97.
I'll have to reflash the lot now.......how annoying.
I am sorry that you are having problems. However hijacking threads is frowned upon here.....
Welcome to the XDA Forums otherwise.

The app is free.
How many roms have you flashed? Maybe it's time to do a factory reset, then flash the full version of the rom/kernal.
Well it did the trick and put me in the correct spot but the compass is still completely wonky.
Oh and this is the first ROM I have flashed. Overcome 1.2.1.
There are apps in the market for that. You want to calibrate the compass, so look for a gps utility. Sorry I don't have one to recommend to you.
Not a problem. I appreciate your advice and welcome any others as well.
One thought about the compass - do you have your tab in a case with a magnetic clip?
Mine works fine out of the leather case, but not when it is in the case.
Just a thought.
No I don't.
To test the GPS to see if there was any interference I put my iPhone 4 into compass mode in maps and did the same with the Tab using the Maps program.
The iPhone 4 was spot on....however the Tab was wrong yet again.
So that means there is no interference.
I am stumped here....and the recalibrate apps did not work either.
Just thought I would try a catch-up.
Since my last comment I moved from Rotos JMIv2 to Overcome 1.2.3 and my GPS also stopped. After 24 hours however, I have got it going through a the use of GPS Status (free from the market) and the LbsTestMode which you can access either through a dialler code or through SGS Toolbox, also free from the market.
To cut the story short, I went from just finding about 3 satelites (with no connectoins), to finding and connecting 10 satelites.
I must say that I am very happy with the current ROM and with the GPS Status program.
Hope this helps if you are still having problems.
I believe that if you dont have wifi or 3g on the tab GPS will not work..

Yes - I've always had the wifi going, but found that unless I had a phone (modem flash) and inserted a sim card, I could never get GPS to do anything.

[SOLVED] GPS Doesnt work, 0 satellites in view

Hey, hoping you guys can help me with a problem. I got a LS980 G2 a few months ago and promptly rooted and put PA on it (2/27 build at the time). I'm now on the 3/12 build, and I've noticed that my GPS doesn't work. I'm looking at GPS Test and I'm not getting any satellites in view.
From other posts, it appears that GPS works in PA 4 for other sprint g2s, but mine doesn't work. Does anyone know what might be wrong with it? Thanks!

Unfortunately, in my excitement of getting a new phone I never tested all the features before slapping TWRP and PA on it
ok ... so the first thing I suggest you download the app from the store that play is called "GPS test", put in an outdoor location and see if it works. If it does not work well you probably have the same problem I've had time ago, and many of whom suffer from G2, or that the GPS antenna is not well contact with the cover, and then the GPS reception is really bad. To fix this you must open the back cover and lift the contact, and ensure that they make contact with the cover.

Cracking it open is definitely an option, although I'm afraid there is something else going on since I get 0 sats. I think i would at least get a few in view with bad quality.
GPS FIXED
Update on this issue for anyone that searches and finds this thread....
I fixed my GPS. The solution was to restore to stock, and reflash my rom. The interesting thing about this, is it appears that ANYTIME you do a revert to stock (at least using a .tot) you have to get a GPS lock or it will break GPS. I flashed the .tot, got GPS lock, rooted, recovery, and flashed Mahdi and GPS worked. I was having some unrelated issues with Mahdi, so I went back to stock again, did NOT lock GPS, rooted, recovery, and flashed PA. This time GPS did not work again. I repeated this process a third time getting a GPS lock and it works now.
So for anyone having the issue with 0 satellites in view (GPS Test from the play store will tell you), here is the fix for the LS980. Other phones can probably follow a similar process-
1. Flash the ZVC .tot to go back to stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2702422
---LS980 ONLY! Other phones have different files to flash
---This will WIPE your SD card, back up files first!
2. Get a GPS lock (GPS Test is handy for this)
3. IORoot to regain root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48709232&postcount=869
4. AutoRec to get TWRP again http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2715496
5. Flash your ROM and you should be golden
I want to do the same, I've a D802, where can I take the file to flash the stock rom?

GPS doesn't work on Kitkat

So I installed a few different stock Kitkat roms on my note 3 (Australian version). At some stage I realised that the gps wasnt working by not getting a singal. I've gone and done many fresh installs with odin of different stock roms and still can't get it to work.
I've used gps status and after fixing a-gps data it will sometimes show many satellites on the horizon but with a very weak signals. If it does finally get a signal after a reboot it won't work again.
I've manually replaced the gps config file and it doesn't help. Also when I use an AOSP rom the gps works perfectly, locks fast and accuracy good.
Any ideas/suggestions on how to get the gps working again will be appreciated!
Not sure to be honest but I have two Notes here with different antennas (our whatever it is that sits on top of the GPS chip), running different Roms but they both seem to get into a state where they suddenly lose the signal, from 10 Satellites or so down to none, then reset GPS and eventually get it going again......could take quite some time or require reboots.
I find that X-Note (non stock kernel!) is much better but did not completely eliminate the issue.
I've rooted one of the phones so I can't return that for warranty and knowing Samsung Australia they would do nothing to help me anyway.
I'm pretty sure that ALL Notes have the issue but it seems to be random and only triggered after some time off operation.....so if you're not running GPS all the time you may not notice.

Someone has posted a gps fix zip. Which is supposed to work. I was afraid I might break something so didn't try it. I installed bob cat rom hoping that would fix it. but it didn't. Mine is international lte. So it isn't supposed to have the gps problem. Knox has tripped over so I am out of warranty. As the aosp rom works go back to that. Or just go from rom to rom till you have what you want which has gps working. I think x rom has working gps but not sure yet. Will know once installed. And i will find that gpsfix zip and install that.

Thanks, wouldn't happen to have a list of n9005 4.4.2 roms with gps fix installed would you? I think thousands of people would happily void their warranty to get it. That is the only reason I installed another rom and voided mine.
But it didn't fix the gps neither do the gps status etcetera.

Sorry but I don't. I think ALL 4.4.2 have that bug, at least all the ones I looked at. I don't know whether this is an Australian thing but it's very strange.
When it gets 'confused' the map that usually shows the satellites in view (or that should be in view) has ALL of them in one spot at the top end of the circle. A clear AGPS data usually fixes this but it sure looks like a software bug. I assume Samsung will eventually fix this. It ONLY happens certain times of the day. yesterday it did not happen before 14:30 but when it did, it did so on both Note 3 I have access to.

For me in australia with lte version it is a case of never getting enough satelites to get a fix and losing soon after. While my i9305 and my wife's n7100 both work fine all the time. So I cannot see it as just an at and t or verizon usa problem. My phone is with optus who updated the firmware as soon as I turned it on. But as I wrote no go so tried sweet, x, omega, bobcat stuck with bobcat 8 more success with gps on 8 than 9. Hopefully 10 will be more like 8. Perhaps 4.4.3 has a fix..
cheers
Curious, there seems to be a multitude of Australians with this issue..
You're going to have trouble aquiring a GPS lock these few days everywhere though. There has been a CME on 04/06/2014 (international dating) that hit Earth at 07/06/2014 and sparked a G2 geomagnetic storm. It plays havoc on all radiosignals, including GPS. It'll be bothersome for another week or two, most likely.

[Q] Is GPS working RELIABLY for anyone?

Hi Everyone,
I've seen three Note 3 on 4.4.2 and they ALL experience GPS resets and different times of the day. Unfortunately I do not have a Note 3 still on 4.3 and courtesy of Samsung I cannot downgrade. A number of users report that the issue was introduced on the N9005 with version 4.4.2.
I'm going to buy another Note 3 and NOT upgrade if this fixes the issue but I'd like to know whether anyone is using their GPS on the N9005 EXTENSIVELY, during the whole day and is not experiencing ANY odd GPS resets, GPS fix lost or other GPS related issues.
I don't want to know about the time it takes to get a fix or the quality of the signal. ALL of the phones I got to look at lost ALL satellites in places where there was NO reason to lose the fix, i.e. out in the open with clear view of the sky and ALL of them did so repeatedly.
If a new phone will fix the issue but I don't want to end up with another dud which I will then have to return. Because the issue is intermittent and somehow related to the time of day AND can only be reproduced outdoors this would be one painful exercise.
So if you do use GPS regularly to navigate etc please let me know how yours works and version of OS you're on.
TIA
I use mine about 6-8 hours a day.
Mainly to keep track of where the train I am on currently is and for navigating streets. And to map out and follow a route when I'm doing an urban or landscape shoot. (Photography).
I've never had issues with my N9005 DBT 4.4.2 NB7, nor on any of the previous versions. It's always accurate and always constant. (Except when I'm in a tunnel or on the tube. But that's physics 101.)
It has never lost all satellites, nor has it ever lost the connection without a perfectly valid reason.
I've done a factory reset and my GPS still takes over 10 minutes to find my location....... If it finds it at all.

Sure, my GPS is usually fine. Locks quickly and reception is OK. Obviously I lose signal in tunnels and in the CBD sometimes so this is not about that.
I could be in the middle of nowhere with nothing blocking my sight although it's obviously most annoying while driving. I lost the signal when I should not. It usually looks just like the GPS resets or so, without moving much at all the signal will drop from 20 satellites down to four then none within 2 or 3 seconds. Then it slowly comes back, gets a lock and works fine again. The lock could then last for a minute or two and then it just happens again. This seems to mostly happen in the afternoon to early evening.....don ask why :-|
I've tried just about everything. Initially I thought it was a hardware defect but my wife's Note 3 does exactly the same thing......what are the odds of having two Note 3 (bought different places about 2 weeks apart) the exact same problem? I had a quick look at a third one (not one of ours so I didn't get to spend much time with it) but it seemed to do the same thing as well, i.e. lost the signal while standing still with no buildings (and mountains etc) around me.

How to fix the GPS?

Hi there,
I have a D801 I bought this summer in the US and recently I'm having problems with the GPS. I got it with stock LP, and I think back then it was working fine. Then, I started testing different roms, and at some point it broke. I guess it is a software problem, but I don't know how to fix it (I search in each rom's thread but it should be working ok).
I'm currently using this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-g2/development/rom-tmo-lp-extreme-v1-0-4-16-15-t3084681
Software details: http://imgur.com/GhqDN9D
I have tried fasterGPS (to set it for Spain) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.fastergps&hl=en and GPS Status https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2&hl=en but it takes forever to lock into a satellite (1/26), and even then it is not able to get the correct location in Google Maps (tried outdoors in several places already).
Any help? Any additional info you may need?
Thanks in advance!
i think most people who have had problems with the GPS on this phone have given up. the GPS is just flaky to non functional. There is a mod out there where you raise the antennae pins to contact the case using something to shim them. that might or might not help. I did it on my LS-980. I also did it on my Samsung Note i717 and it solved it.
I think part of the equation is software related. I updated my rom to Dirty Unicorns and my GPS was working most of the time. but when it refused to lock, nothing could make it. on stock, I had a weird condition where the GPS would work only if my phone was in 3g mode, not LTE. However, when my phone got stuck in 3g mode, would never switch back to LTE without turning off and on mobile data. I am currently back to stock but my GPS doesn;t work.

Nice... Then I'll give a look at that tutorial. I was hoping to fix it by flashing some radios/basebands or the likes, but we seem to be on the same boat. It is not that I use GPS that much, but I didn't expect such problems in a previous flagship phone. Anyways, thanks for your help :good:

Don't get your hopes up on that tutorial. GPS is notoriously bad on G2. So many people have problems. Mine doesn't work at all and I gave up like the previous poster said. Not a big deal for me except when I'm trying to use Uber!

Well, I finally had the time to try the antenna hack (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfS4LpfcLfg) and it went from locking to none to locking to 12 out of 20 sats. Finally I can be happy this phone (also running CloudyG2 btw). We'll see how long does it last though...
Thank you all!
Here's a weird situation, just recently used the TOT method to restore my phone back to stock, and after installing the updates to bring me to zvh, my gps is working again. Still a little flaky but mostly working.
