GPS doesn't work on Kitkat - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I installed a few different stock Kitkat roms on my note 3 (Australian version). At some stage I realised that the gps wasnt working by not getting a singal. I've gone and done many fresh installs with odin of different stock roms and still can't get it to work.
I've used gps status and after fixing a-gps data it will sometimes show many satellites on the horizon but with a very weak signals. If it does finally get a signal after a reboot it won't work again.
I've manually replaced the gps config file and it doesn't help. Also when I use an AOSP rom the gps works perfectly, locks fast and accuracy good.
Any ideas/suggestions on how to get the gps working again will be appreciated!

Not sure to be honest but I have two Notes here with different antennas (our whatever it is that sits on top of the GPS chip), running different Roms but they both seem to get into a state where they suddenly lose the signal, from 10 Satellites or so down to none, then reset GPS and eventually get it going again......could take quite some time or require reboots.
I find that X-Note (non stock kernel!) is much better but did not completely eliminate the issue.
I've rooted one of the phones so I can't return that for warranty and knowing Samsung Australia they would do nothing to help me anyway.
I'm pretty sure that ALL Notes have the issue but it seems to be random and only triggered after some time off operation.....so if you're not running GPS all the time you may not notice.

Someone has posted a gps fix zip. Which is supposed to work. I was afraid I might break something so didn't try it. I installed bob cat rom hoping that would fix it. but it didn't. Mine is international lte. So it isn't supposed to have the gps problem. Knox has tripped over so I am out of warranty. As the aosp rom works go back to that. Or just go from rom to rom till you have what you want which has gps working. I think x rom has working gps but not sure yet. Will know once installed. And i will find that gpsfix zip and install that.

That GPS fix zip is for 4.3 ONLY and will create a boot loop on 4.4.2.

Thanks, wouldn't happen to have a list of n9005 4.4.2 roms with gps fix installed would you? I think thousands of people would happily void their warranty to get it. That is the only reason I installed another rom and voided mine.
But it didn't fix the gps neither do the gps status etcetera.

Sorry but I don't. I think ALL 4.4.2 have that bug, at least all the ones I looked at. I don't know whether this is an Australian thing but it's very strange.
When it gets 'confused' the map that usually shows the satellites in view (or that should be in view) has ALL of them in one spot at the top end of the circle. A clear AGPS data usually fixes this but it sure looks like a software bug. I assume Samsung will eventually fix this. It ONLY happens certain times of the day. yesterday it did not happen before 14:30 but when it did, it did so on both Note 3 I have access to.

For me in australia with lte version it is a case of never getting enough satelites to get a fix and losing soon after. While my i9305 and my wife's n7100 both work fine all the time. So I cannot see it as just an at and t or verizon usa problem. My phone is with optus who updated the firmware as soon as I turned it on. But as I wrote no go so tried sweet, x, omega, bobcat stuck with bobcat 8 more success with gps on 8 than 9. Hopefully 10 will be more like 8. Perhaps 4.4.3 has a fix..
cheers

Curious, there seems to be a multitude of Australians with this issue..
You're going to have trouble aquiring a GPS lock these few days everywhere though. There has been a CME on 04/06/2014 (international dating) that hit Earth at 07/06/2014 and sparked a G2 geomagnetic storm. It plays havoc on all radiosignals, including GPS. It'll be bothersome for another week or two, most likely.

Gps experience with stock rom
Here is my experience in Without rooted complete stock ROM GPS Locking Time.:good:
Bought SM-N 9005 in December(U.A.E)- Jelly Bean- GPS Lock within 4 to 5 Seconds without any Help of Internet.
January Flashed Kitkat Poland (XEO) GPS Lock within 60 seconds without Internet, with Internet 30 to 40 Seconds,:crying:
April Flashed UK (BTU) GPS Lock timing same as Poland.:crying:
May Flashed U.A.E version again GPS LOCK WITHIN 4 to 5 Seconds without any Help of Internet.:good:
I am from U.A.E my question is GPS has anything to do with region? I mean GPS software is inside CSC or ROM or Kernel????

Try entering root folder and open up etc>gps.conf using text editor and change LPP_PROFILE to 3 instead of 0.

sama with me. i alteady try many rom include stock ne4 firmware. cannot lock the gps signal. felling sad.

GPS Lock problem

Hi everybody,
I have search a lot about my problem, but I don't find the exact same problem. I tried everything said on this forum and can't get trought my problem.
I had a Samsung Galaxy S4 and upgraded three days ago to a brand new Note 3. Everything is going fine exccept for GPS.
Here's my phone informations:
MODEL: SM-N900W8
CARRIER: Rogers (Canada)
Android version 4.3
BaseBand version N900w8VLUBMJ4
Version JSS15J.N900W8VLUBMJ4
The problem is: When I get into Google maps, i'll get a location (It is an approximation using Cell towers I think) When getting into Navigation, The FIRST location is ok (with an error margin but still, it's ok) but it never update position (The application seems to freeze but it doesn't). After searching a lot I installed applications like GPS Test and GPS Status to find out that I never get a GPS lock. After two or three minutes I get 1 or 2 satellites but never get more so it cannot lock. I often lost the 2 satellites I was getting after a few more minutes.
I got a lock once, I was inside my house, had 7 satellites but lost it after a few minutes again.
I did a Factory Reset, I did clear cache and dalvik cache several time, uninstalled Google Maps, tried the GPSFix.zip files as discussed here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2612757). Tried to clear AGPS and redownload, recalibrated compass, ... i think I tried everything I found but nothing help.
Please note that tests have been made on the road, with a clear view to the sky (No buildings, nothing in the way from the phone to the satellites. I also have experiences in rooting, flasshing ROM, playing with system files, so it should not be a lack of knowlege
My phone is rooted but i don't want to flash any ROM because I still have Knox flag to 0x0 and want to keep it (For a warranty purpose!)
If anyone can help on this, it would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Jonathan

Use that warranty... You should be able to use the GPS and the fact it doesn't get satellite lock is a problem...

I did drop the phone ONE time and the glass break. I think there will be no way to get warranty until I repair it.
I've been having this issue since upgrading to KitKat on Note3 (Snapdragon) International Version.
I found an app today and fixed it.
App is TopNTP and you can find it in Playstore.
You need to have Root, of course.
Before it would take forever to lock the signal, and most of the time it wouldn't at all.
Now it takes from 5-10 seconds.
I'm on Stock ROM.
Try fastergps.........https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.fastergps&hl=en_GB
GMaps needs a data connection so could end up costing you a fortune.
Try navfree maybe?
once it has downloaded your specified map,use wifi,it only uses GPS after that.

try solution 1 from that post
Thanks for your answers, I solved the problem when repairing my screen. I think the antenna cable wasn't well inserted and by disassembling and reassimbling the phone, everything is perfect now.
I have X-Note rom, without breaking knox flag. Everything is good since that!
Thx

[Q] Is GPS working RELIABLY for anyone?

Hi Everyone,
I've seen three Note 3 on 4.4.2 and they ALL experience GPS resets and different times of the day. Unfortunately I do not have a Note 3 still on 4.3 and courtesy of Samsung I cannot downgrade. A number of users report that the issue was introduced on the N9005 with version 4.4.2.
I'm going to buy another Note 3 and NOT upgrade if this fixes the issue but I'd like to know whether anyone is using their GPS on the N9005 EXTENSIVELY, during the whole day and is not experiencing ANY odd GPS resets, GPS fix lost or other GPS related issues.
I don't want to know about the time it takes to get a fix or the quality of the signal. ALL of the phones I got to look at lost ALL satellites in places where there was NO reason to lose the fix, i.e. out in the open with clear view of the sky and ALL of them did so repeatedly.
If a new phone will fix the issue but I don't want to end up with another dud which I will then have to return. Because the issue is intermittent and somehow related to the time of day AND can only be reproduced outdoors this would be one painful exercise.
So if you do use GPS regularly to navigate etc please let me know how yours works and version of OS you're on.
TIA
I use mine about 6-8 hours a day.
Mainly to keep track of where the train I am on currently is and for navigating streets. And to map out and follow a route when I'm doing an urban or landscape shoot. (Photography).
I've never had issues with my N9005 DBT 4.4.2 NB7, nor on any of the previous versions. It's always accurate and always constant. (Except when I'm in a tunnel or on the tube. But that's physics 101.)
It has never lost all satellites, nor has it ever lost the connection without a perfectly valid reason.
I've done a factory reset and my GPS still takes over 10 minutes to find my location....... If it finds it at all.

I agree with this post, never once had a problem.
I use mine for about 2 hours maximum everyday (so i can avoid traffic) mounted on my motorbike whilst riding to and from work, with a bluetooth headset in my helmet.
I am running a deodexed version of ND3

May I ask how u experience the problem maybe I just don't get it. Is the GPS not working at all while maps or any GPS based app is running? Or does the phone tell u that GPS is not working? I'm on 4.4.2 without any issues of GPS

Sure, my GPS is usually fine. Locks quickly and reception is OK. Obviously I lose signal in tunnels and in the CBD sometimes so this is not about that.
I could be in the middle of nowhere with nothing blocking my sight although it's obviously most annoying while driving. I lost the signal when I should not. It usually looks just like the GPS resets or so, without moving much at all the signal will drop from 20 satellites down to four then none within 2 or 3 seconds. Then it slowly comes back, gets a lock and works fine again. The lock could then last for a minute or two and then it just happens again. This seems to mostly happen in the afternoon to early evening.....don ask why :-|
I've tried just about everything. Initially I thought it was a hardware defect but my wife's Note 3 does exactly the same thing......what are the odds of having two Note 3 (bought different places about 2 weeks apart) the exact same problem? I had a quick look at a third one (not one of ours so I didn't get to spend much time with it) but it seemed to do the same thing as well, i.e. lost the signal while standing still with no buildings (and mountains etc) around me.

I don't know about the rom since I didn't try it but in the quote of the link is how he fixed the GPS issue. Seems like it is a software problem. If your phones are rooted try the method described in the quote if not try reset with backup via Google. Good luck.

[Q] GPS Issues after flashing back from Lollipop

Hi there,
I´ve had several roms in the past on my Note 3 (SM-N9005) and eventually went back to the Dutch stock rom (Kitkat), with me not being able to wait for the Dutch release of Lollipop i've flashed it without any troubles but I missed the Blocking mode from Kitkat so I reverted back to Kitkit but now I seem to be unable to get a GPS fix.
I've installed GPS Status app and some other apps that write the GPS config on the rooted Kitkat rom but no luck, i've also switched a few times from Lollipop to Kitkat to see if it would make a difference but it didn't.
Now when I open the GPS Status app or any other app that needs GPS the Icon of Android self stopped blinking and says it has a GPS fix but this is false or with will blink and eventually give me a fix.
Any of you any ideas or is the GPS done for?
Thank you for your help!
I also have the same problem the battery has been great for lollipoo but the gps is not working bumping this topic

I can confirm this issue with GPS. It won't lock GPS at all.
Do you people go out of the house to test gps ? You won't get a lock in your bedroom.
I'm asking, because i know that many don't do so.
Hi there,
Yes I test in the outside, even with a clear sky the GPS won't get a fix.
I am not sure but looks like the bootup of the GPS doesn't seem to work fine. Sometimes like 1 in 50 the GPS will boot up and give me a accurate fix.

Totally strange GPS behavior

Hi,
I have a totally strange behavior with my GPS. I'm using CM 13 right now and tried it with the official CM 12.1 and the stock ROM, all with the same behavior. Which I figured out so far is that the GPS need around 5 Minutes to get a lock. The only solution I found so far is using GPS Locker from the play store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.silentlexx.gpslock). With this app I'm able to get a lock within 10 seconds or faster. But I like my phone as clean as possible and so I want to fix the GPS without the need of an app. Hopefully someone of you could give me an advice how to fix that.
That are the solutions I tried already:
- Flash the stock ROM, wait until I get a GPS lock and flash a custom ROM
- Download several GPS Fix Apps to reset the agps data
- Modified the gps.conf file
- Open the device to check if the antenna cable is connected probably
Flash the stock ROM, wait until I get a GPS lock and flash a custom ROM
Does nothing as you have over written the system .
GPS is a kernel effect .
agps Patch from xda/derekgordon may be worth trying .
Thanks for your response. I got some time to give it a try but it didn't helped. It seems that Google maps doesn't work without an app that locks the GPS. Gps testing apps are working great only maps seems not able to find the right position by itself. Any other ideas someone?

fyi when I was on KitKat my gps locked quick and worked great. Since going to lollipop, I cannot use my gps as it constantly drops. So frustrating so I have tried other apps to see if I could clear the data/reset but none have worked. I was going to flash back to KitKat today but I am going to try GPS Locker as you have provided and see.. if not going back to 4.3...
ok so long update. What a PITA... I got back on KitKat 4.4.4 and gps seemed like it was a go.. but then died on my 65 mile drive to work. bout half way.
i was getting 15 satellites found and 3-6 in use...
so I got tired of the annoying.. hey upgrade now so went back to Lollipop. I then googled last night and found this..
https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyNote3/comments/2xcvpi/fyi_easy_fix_for_note_3_gps_problem/
WOAH!!!! just opened me phone up and viola. Unplugged. I just walked outside and BAM!!!! 21 satellites in view and locked on 18!!!! WOAH and in 3 seconds...

GPS cannot fix location but can detect satellites

Hi.
I'm using the Samsung galaxy note 3 with magma nx note 8 rom. My phone cannot lock into a satellite despite detecting it. I tried reset gps, download new a gps state. The phone still can see the 20+ satellites but no fix is there. Tried outside and it is still the same. Any ideas how to fix this?
Ask in your roms thread .
Usual Replies
Wrong GPS.conf settings .
Wrong Modem/ Baseband
Loose cable connection
Hardware
At least one thousand identical questions posed use search .
GPS.conf settings fixed mine a bit a while back, but was still slow to lock on. At the time, my battery life sucked, I thought it was the ROM. Finally caved and bought a new battery as the other one was original, and not only did the ROM last for over a day of battery life, my GPS locking is almost instant now. FWIW

Having the same problem using google maps. It must be from the rom..
Usual is user not rom.
Their are hundreds of GPS Fix posts .
Start by reading rom OP search rom thread.
Flash latest Nordic Countries modem (GPQB1) and bootloader with odin. Your gps will works really good with any rom.
