[Q] Sound not working? - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anybody else's Nexus Player not outputting sound? It has been working great the first few days and now no sound would come out. I've tried several apps and games.

I have not had this issue so far. These are obvious questions, but they must be asked: Have you tried unplugging it for a while? Are you sure nothing else in your system (TV, receiver, etc.) has changed? Are other components (DVD player, Xbox, etc.) working fine through the same setup?
EDIT: Oh, and were you using the device when it quit outputting sound? Did it happen inside a particular app?
Thanks.

Maybe problem is the TV? Try unplugging HDMI then plugging back in. My TV has that problem sometimes with different devices including Nexus Player.

Check out your TV settings. I've had similar problem before where I was on an HDMI input but the TV was expecting sound from component inputs. Make sure TV/receiver is configured to take sound from that particular input. If you don't know how to do that try a different HDMI input.

I have the same problem. It sounds like a timing issue. I was able to work around it by running an app that has sound then unplugging the hdmi cable from the TV and plugging it back in. Make sure you use a app that will not pause playback when the hdmi is unplugged. Do not use the youtube app; I used plex. I just started a movie in plex, unplugged the hdmi then plugged it back in and I had sound.

Thanks. I got a new TV, and I was having problems with no sound on my Nexus Player. At first, switching it from PCM to Bistream audio fixed the problem, but it came back. Finally, a combination of plugging/unplugging with audio running fixed the issue.
I swear, between WiFi dropouts, this audio issue, and some other more minor issues, I'm really getting annoyed with this thing. It's buggy as hell. But when it's working, I do enjoy it. Ugh.

This just happened again for me, and unplugging/replugging had no effect. What did seem to fix it though was changing HDMI inputs while audio was continuously playing on the Nexus Player (I used Plex so it wouldn't pause). Just something to keep in mind if anyone else finds this thread looking for a solution to this problem.
I wish Google would put a little more effort into the Nexus Player. I love it, but it's buggy as hell. Asus has been pretty terrible with every device I've had of theirs, so I'm going to blame them. Either way, I wish the thing was more stable.

I've been having this too. When I come home from work the np will have no sound. Unplugging hdmi does not help. I have to reboot. Also, the np is not going into daydream mode like it should be. After all day being at work, as soon as I turn the tv on the np is still on the home screen. I'm not sure If this is related or not. I bought a fire tv and then ordered a nexus player thinking I was gonna return the fire tv, but after all the bugs I've encountered I'm considering returning the np and just keeping the fire tv.

A quick Google search brought me to this page. In my case, my Nexus Player had paired by Bluetooth, with my portable speakers which were turned off. So check if any audio related bluetooth devices are connected to your Nexus Player and then disconnect them.

LOL! Happened to me this week after I bought a brand new receiver. I thought my receiver was no good, I kept turning it up but heard a faint sound from the "Office" playing on the kitchen table. Turns out I had done the same.

Jesus, thanks. I lost power, and when it returned, my Nexus Player wasn't outputting sound. I saw your post, and then saw that my Nexus had automatically paired via Bluetooth with my VitaTV for some reason, which it was directing sound to.

I know this is an ancient thread but I have to do this each and every time I change the channel via the "live channels" app. Everything else (Kodi/Plex, etc) there is no sound issue.
Any idea why this occurs?

Similar issue. It seems like my Kodi somehow deactivated the sound.
I restarted the Nexus Player via the menu, started Kodi, waited 10 seconds and the sound come back.

[ISSUE] Speaker popping DURING audio playback

Before you all yell at me for making another thread about this (I know one exists, that's what I originally found when I searched), this is a different issue.
I'm sitting here in my office at work playing music off my TF, and everything goes well for a while. Then about 30 minutes in, the speakers will start constantly popping during playback. It starts out softly, then gets progressively worse (to the point where it sounds like a dirty record).
However, the first time it happened, I held down the power button and rebooted the TF and that fixed it. Then about 30 minutes later, it started happening again. So instead of rebooting, I decided to try force stopping the Music app (I'm using Google's Music) to see if it's a software issue. And boom, the popping is gone after restarting Music. Weird. Because it sounds like it should be a hardware issue... but restarting the app making the audio seems to fix it. Next time it happens I'll try just opening up Youtube and seeing if it persists.
Anyone else getting this? I'm on stock un-rooted 3.1.
Hey, I seem to have this problem as well,
and only in the Music App.
I'm using headphone to listen to music,
and it just happened about 5 minutes ago,
I decided to unplug the headphone and replug it and it seem to fix the problem,
and then when it happened again, I switched to the Youtube app immediately and the sound was perfectly normal in Youtube.
So I'm suspecting its actually the Music app's issue.
may I ask if you are listening to music you stored online or from your device?
Are you streaming the music? Using any apps like equalizer or volume+?
Also happened to me today for the first time...and I am using volume+
I guess ill turn it off if it happens again and see if its that.
This happens to me when listening to music and the transformer sleeps, it takes a good 3 minutes then finally changes tracks. Once changed though I get this cracking nose also.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I896 using Tapatalk
Same thing happens to me only when listening to google music. Will play normally at times, then popping will suddenly happen. I've listened to Squeezebox streams on my TF for extended periods with no popping, so I also suspect it has something to do with google music.
It would be nice to narrow down the cause and come up with a workaround.
used to have this problem when using older version of thumb keyboard, the typing sound produced this cracking noise. but fixed when I upgrade the thumb keyboard ;-)
+1 here.
Headphones, using Music player. I'm not using any special other apps to boost volume output. My headphones work just fine with any other device.
Unplugging and reconnecting the headphones seems to fix the issue. I haven't tested to see if this is exclusively with just the Music app or not.

Same issue, unplugging headphones fixes.
Running an OC kernel w/ Voodoo Sound, and Prime 1.4. Kinda points to an issue with software, I don't think i can blame the Player, more like the drivers/OS. Getting into a grove coding, i left my headphones on with no songs playing, and there was still an occasional crackle.
Really bummed, because this is a sweet music playback device with quality headphones and an amp'd signal.
Update: Flashed Asus 3.1 with CW Recovery mod (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112527) and popping gone. Still running OC kernel.

[Q] Acer Iconia A500 headphone jack issue

Hey guys I was wondering if anybody else has had this issue occur with their device, recently my A500 has been playing audio from the speakers and headphones at the same time. This only happens on 2 out of 5 times, and when it does all I have to do is unplug the headphones and plug them back in. Yes, I have tried different pairs of headphones so that is not the problem. I need to know if this is an issue with the A500 itself( hardware) or if it could be a software issue just so I know whether to have it exchanged for a new one or not.
Appreciate the feedback guys
I'm sure it's unlikely to be a hardware issue as the headphone jack seems to work fine.
My vote is software bug. What are you using to listen to music? What steps are you taking to go from speakers to headphone - during playback? Before playback? Pausing playback, changing to headphones then starting playback?
Can you repeat any steps to get it to bug out on a regular basis or is it completely random?
It could be a music app bug or a HC bug. I have read others having similar problems since release but I don't believe anyone has found a solution/or the cause or done any testing.

yes i have been experiencing the same issue. this is where i have noticed it
When i start the music player app and plugin the jack and start music and then if the screen turns of or pause it and screen turns of and when i resume the same after sleep the music plays on both speaker and head phones this was not happening on 3.01 and happening on 3.1
i have tested this please confirm play music plug in the jack and then press power button which goes to sleep mode when u press the power button one more time and resume music this happens
One more thing is when i remove the jack the music app just pops up on the tool bar as in the status bar at the bottom

Hey matrix I tried reproducing your issue but it was fine, sound only came from the headphones. Btw I am using virtuousgalaxy rom, although when the issue started I was on virtuouspicasso
Having the same problem on my stock 3.1. Sometimes i need to unplug and plug in headphones multiple times to get it back to normal behaviour.
yup
Have had nothing but strange issues when using the stock music player. Sound coming from headphones/speakers at the same time, random fc's, horrid popping sounds from a perfect mp3 file, and my personal favorite feature - sometimes the player just starts up on it's own and blares music at inappropriate times.
Had these issues with stock music player since 3.0.1 up to the stock 3.1 build I am using.
My solution? Remove the stock music player from the system, download winamp, ???, profit

[Q] Popping sound when SMS interrupts music?

Got my Note3 on VZW last night, and so far i love almost everything about it....except...
I am sitting at work streaming music. I have a set of speakers plugged into the headphone jack.
When i receive an SMS (or any notification), the music pauses like normal. However, right before and after the pause, i hear a "pop" sound, as if i physically unplugged the speakers and plugged them back in. My Gnex that the note replaced definitely did not do this.
I don't believe it made the sound when connected BT in my car.
Is anyone else seeing this behavior? It sounds like a grounding issue.
Same for me

I am using Rhapsody, so there isn't another app option. I dont have any local music on the phone yet, but i will try that at some point.
I stream music through Rhapsody every day. I hope this isn't a hardware issue. Seeing poweramp work better makes me hopeful it is just a software issue.

What's the Netflix fix?

Does anybody at Mad Catz have a thought on the matter? The hardware should be more than capable of running Netflix on a large screen without audio sync issues. Can you provide a proper app?

We're not seeing any audio sync issues here, and going by reports from other users neither is anyone else. What's your complete hardware setup and do you get any sync issues with other programs such as xbmc or YouTube?
I'm just waiting on HD Netflix...Quality on Netflix on MOJO is severely lacking. I don't have any audio problems (at the moment), but the video is very pixelated.
Streaming YouTube and other movie apps in 1080 or 720 works perfectly for me 85% of the time. I'm thinking my few issues with those is because my wireless router just reached 12 years old and is constantly dropping signal.....Going this weekend to buy a new one.

Actually, I was a bit hasty with my previous reply. My hardware set up includes a home theater sound system where the audio loops back through the TV. If I use the TV speaker, the lag is barely noticeable. If I turn off the TV speaker and use the amplifier, there is a very noticeable lag.

Yes, I was wondering if there was an amp in the loop, although the fact that it only does it for Netflix is a bit odd. Could you clarify though: are you connecting MOJO into the amp which then passes to the TV or are you connecting into the TV which is then passing audio to the amp (and, if so, what kind of connection? Optical? Phono?). If it is the latter then some amps have settings to accommodate for audio lag.

The MOJO is connected directly to the TV via an HDMI cable. Likewise, the amplifier, which is a Sony Model # STR-DH520, is also connected directly to the TV via an HDMI cable. I looked thru the manual and found a "SYNC ON" setting which delays the "output of audio to minimize the time gap between output and visual display" The delay time given is 60ms. I'll play around with it later today and see what impact it has. Maybe I had it on when it should have been off, or vice-a-versa. Thanks for the input on this!
I guess you're using all of the HDMI inputs on the amp already?

I will confess to having bought the TV and amp, etc., two years ago, and now I don't really remember what led me to make the setup choices I made at the time, but no, I wasn't using all the HDMI inputs on the amp, and frankly, I didn't even check to see if it had available HDMI inputs on the amp when I connected the MOJO. Connecting the MOJO directly into the amp and ensuring the correct A/V sync setting eliminated the delay completely. Thanks!

I have audio sync issues too. Audio seems to lag behind the video. And always when I watch netflix, the screen flashes, like gets smaller, idk how to describe it, often when watching shows. No matter what shows I watch it always does this. Probably 20 times at least throughout an hour long show.

If you've read this entire thread, you're aware my problem was similar to yours. I too had seen the occasional screen "flash" when watching Netflix. I'd recommend plugging your MOJO directly into your TV, using the TV's speaker, and eliminating any other hardware that might be in the loop in order to see if the issue truly lies in your MOJO, and is not being caused by some other component. Connecting my MOJO directly to my amp solved all my audio sync issues.

Mine is directly hooked up thru the TVs HDMI port. No difference if I have anything else plugged into the TV or not
And you're only using the TV's speaker? (rather than then output your TV's audio to an external speaker/amp?)
Are you running the 0110 firmware release and do you see the same issue with other video playback programs?

Yes, using the TV's speaker. My mojo came with the 0110 firmware release. Only Netflix has this issue. Have reset my wireless router to make sure that wasn't the problem either. Mojo is the only hardware hooked up to this tv.
If it would help, I could capture a video of what it's doing on my phone.

I no longer have any audio sync issues, but I do still see the occasional "flash" while watching Netflix. It looks like the image changes sizes for a fraction of a second. Haven't seen it with any other App.

Yes, that's the same problem I have with Netflix (along with the audio sync issues). It doesn't bother me enough to not watch it but it can be disorienting when watching at nite in a dark room. It does it a lot for me. I notice it the most when scenes change.
Edit:
I just got root tonight. I see on the Play Store that I can now update Netflix to the latest version. I will do that and get back to ya'll and see if that changes anything! As soon as I'm done downloading more games....
Ok, so last night I went out and bought a new TV for my MOJO. Picked up a 42" Sharp 1080p 120hz LED. I don't know if it's because this TV is 120hz compared to my 2010 32" Vizio 1080p 60hz, but the Netflix issue has been resolved. No more audio sync issues. I also noticed this TV has a Clear Motion setting, I have it set to on. Not sure if this has something to do with it either. Anyways, it's fixed, for now.
BTW, anyone looking for a deal on a TV of this relative size, it's a steal. Only $399 at Best Buy. The picture is awesome, and 120hz over 60hz is a night and day difference. Much more clear during on screen motion than my old tv. I'm very impressed. I can't imagine how good a 240hz or 480hz set looks like.
Edit:
Forgot to mention, the screen flashing/resizing is still happening. Very annoying. I really feel this is an issue with the app itself, hopefully it's getting fixed with an update. Can't wait to start watching in HD aswell...

Fire HD 10 2019/9th/Maverick -- Audio issues when using speakers only, NOT headphones

I got my Fire HD 10 9th gen today and installed the Play Store with no problems.
I was hoping this would be a good "budget" device to replay the Ace Attorney games on while I'm in lockdown, but I'm having weird audio issues...
In two of the games ("Dual Destinies" and "Spirit of Justice"), the "bip-bip-bip" sound effect that plays whenever a character is speaking, only plays sporadically or not at all. The music also seems to hitch sometimes. However, as soon as I plug in a pair of headphones, all the audio issues stop. As soon as I unplug the headphones again, the audio issues are back!
My best guess is that there's some sort of audio post-processing... something going on to make the speakers sound better? But that doesn't get applied to the headphones? Does that sound plausible?
I'm not normally an Android person, so, so far I've tried:
- Lots of Googling
- Disabling the Dolby OEM app through ADB (com.dolby.daxservice), as it seemed a likely candidate, but it didn't make any difference
For now I'll make do with headphones, but I'd obviously love to have not paid £150 for a device with unusable speakers, so any advice you can give would be really appreciated.
Oh, I'm on Fire OS 7.3.1.2.
Thanks!
--
ETA: I've found a workaround -- if I connect a Bluetooth headset (in my case, AirPods Pro) and then disconnect it, the audio plays properly through the tablet speakers. However closing and re-launching the app breaks the workaround. So, not ideal.
ETA: 2 I haven't changed anything, but the workaround has now stopped working

You can reboot or reset your Fire tablet to factory defaults (before you start this. You have backup your important files to SD card or PC)
You have to use an audio isolation transformer to stop grounding.
