Signal on s5 w/Verizon - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently went from Sprint to Verizon s5 due to many people telling me how reliable and great Verizon signal is. I work offshore so I was hoping on Verizon I could still have sum sort of signal but I do not..is it possible to somehow get a signal in these offshore areas(Louisiana)? Often times my phone says 1x but I can't get online, do all carriers just not have service on the water? Appreciate the help.

[Q] Realized why many don't like AT&T

Living in Oregon, about an hour outside of Portland, I have to say my AT&T service has been outstanding. So when I read reports in the news about poor service and call quality, it wasn't until a trip to Manhattan last week that made me realize why. Talk about nightmarish service!
I couldn't seem to take two steps either way from where ever I was when making a call or I'd get dropped. Even texting was some of the worse I've ever dealt with anywhere.
I can see how a survey would put them so bad when you compare the number of users there versus here but I have to wonder, are the other providers any better?
How's other area's and their carriers?
Cheers!
Jeff
Boy did I post this in the wrong spot. Time to put down the beer...
Although everyone seems to hate them, they have the best coverage here in Hawai'i. In fact they are the only carrier that covers my house, although I only get reception near windows and doors. My stepmom has Verizon and she has to go out on the road just to call or text someone. The only thing I have against them is my limited data. Once I move to Cali I'll think about getting Sprint for an unlimited plan.
AT&T is more expensive than Tmb.
Around here in wisconsin at&t doesn't have a good rep. Most everyone is moving over to verizon.
I live in Maryland and I get absoultely wonderful service around here with Verizon. Being halfway between D.C. and Baltimore helps especially with 4g. Get full bars almost everywhere I go. I went to Queens not more than a month ago and I didn't really have any problems. Of course the speeds werent as good, because of all the users over there, but I can say that it still was pretty great overall.
At&t doesn't work within thirty miles of my hometown. In Georgia verizon is the only way to go. Works almost 98% everywhere.

Verizon or AT&T ???

I have Verizon which I get a corporate discount. I love that I never drop a call But i've noticed that inside buildings data drops a lot even at work I rarely get stable 4g or 3g unlike some that have at&t. coworkers get perfect 3g with at&t... I don't know what to do cause I love Verizon but this is driving me crazy....and I don't have wifi at work

Are you grandfathered into unlimited data with Verizon? AT&T is not without its woes. Customer service, overtaxed network, dropped calls and dead spots, updates to phones are pretty slow... If you are rooted you may be able to connect to the internet through USB.
Depends on the area you are in mostly. All networks have their own issues. I'm on Sprint, but Verizon would be my next choice... if only I could have unlimited data...
You could ask 50 people and get 50% one way and the other 50% the other way. I've had great luck with AT&T. I've had very few dropped calls in the five years I've been with them. I've had great luck with customer service. I'm grandfathered into unlimited so I can't imagine leaving to a company that doesn't have unlimited data now. I think Sprint and Tmobile are the only ones left and both those companys seem to have a lot of problem wtih reception, dead areas, and dropped calls here.
My only complaint is that software updates don't seem to come as quickly to AT&T as other companys.
Moved to proper section
neither, is better use t-mobile
Like others have said, a lot of it is variable on where you live. Here in Central PA, I had tons of issues with AT&T (dropped calls, circuits full, etc), and have had none of the same issues with Verizon. When driving from AZ to CA last summer, I had full bars of 3G most of the time, while my friend's iPhone (AT&T) didn't have 3G most of the time. So, I prefer Verizon, based on my experiences.
I seems like you have made your mind. But like, kiltedthrower, not having unlimited data would be a killer. Thats' another reason why I don't change to Verizon. Verizon is a great company. Everyone that has Verizon in SoCal that I know have great reception. So it's up to you...

[Q] Straight Talk, MicroCell, and (possibly) inaccurate coverage map

So I have no coverage at home. I am 0.1 miles from coverage. The coverage map shows my whole area as full 2G coverage. However from appx my location to the end of the road (not to mention many more areas) I have zero reception. Again, these are all areas that show good coverage.
I have talked at length with AT&T and StraightTalk and made no progress towards a positive resolution. I have even installed an app that is supposed to boost signal in hopes to squeeze out just enough juice to bust through the small dead area between myself and signal range with no success.
I have also purchased a MicroCell after AT&T said my ST phone should be able to ride off the MicroCell. The catch is I have to activate it on an AT&T post paid account. I have no friends who have AT&T as Verizon has pretty much cornered the market in my area.
I do, however, remember a friend whom I've since lost contact with being able to access the Internet at my house. I am almost certain they had an AT&T phone.
Does anyone have any experience with similar StraightTalk issues and have suggestions? I am not the expert so I will not bother with speculation. I am using CM 10.1 however I had the same issue on stock OS. I am using a StraightTalk SIM in case anyone might want to travel down that road. I have tinkered with the APN settings however I do not think that path will work because I went to detect networks and I see nothing, not even foreign networks.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
If you don't have a signal you don't have a signal, no app or software tweak is going to get you access.
If it was no internet or MMS the APN might be the issue, signal is very basic it either works or it doesn't and it's not the straight talk Sim if you get access down the street.
Getting your microcell activated is your best bet, maybe an at&t store could help?

Are there hills around you? Lots of trees? How far away are the towers? Those coverage maps are always estimates. YMMV.

I'm in the mountains. I know that begs the response "well duh!" I was just hoping something I could try...
As far as the MicroCell goes: been there, done that. I would need someone who has AT&T to log into their account, add my MicroCell serial number and add my cell phone to the access list. If someone wants to work with me on that by all means let me know. I will thank you warmly and up your thanks meter if you post something to the ring of "I'm on it" as a reply.
Thanks guys 'n' gals.
Truthfully, activating your microcell on someone else's account would only cause problems in the long run. As a tech support rep of ATT myself, if you don't have the coverage your best bet is to just go with Verizon if you do have coverage with them. Would save you a headache, hours of phonecalls potentially troubleshooting the failure that is a microcell, and probably lots of wasted money you could've put forth towards something that does work.

ATT or Verizon?

I'm leaving Sprint, and was planning on moving to ATT, but now taking a look at Verizon. It appears that VZ has slightly better coverage in my rural area. I'm also moving up to the GN3 and have been reading that some features may not be available on VZ. I would really appreciate any opinions or recommendations that would make this decision easier.
Cost? Seems pretty close.
Phones? Does one carrier limit their instruments more than the other?
Coverage and reliability?
Anything else?
Thanks in advance.
I'm posting in General, because although there are question marks here, they're not exactly questions. Please move if you think so.

My 2 cents: It really depends on coverage. If you get a signal with VZW and not with AT&T, your problem is solved, and vice versa. If you live in a rural area and get a weak signal, there are boosters (I have used a Wilson Yagi antenna with 4G Sleek cradle and gone from 0 to 5 bars...but the cradle limits mobility. It comes in versions for VZW or AT&T but not both). VZW offers 6Gb data for $50 while AT&T gives you 5Gb. However, AT&T gives access to WIFI hotspots, and may give you more options if you travel overseas. As for the GN3 - I'm eagerly awaiting mine - on AT&T, after 15 years a Verizon customer. Both versions look like they will be more difficult to mod than other phones (which is why some people are buying a T-Mobile version and moving to AT&T). I had no issues with Verizon in the 15 years I was with them, and am only buying the AT&T GN3 to find out if coverage on their network is better here than VZW; if not I'll return it and probably cease using cellular coverage for internet access and go with Excede - I live in a rural area, too, and have to climb a hill to use voice. Radio Shack rep told me Wilson is coming out with a signal booster "in a couple months" that will not tie you to a cradle. I get my phone tomorrow, and am anxious to find out how the radio on the Note 3 compares to my Droid Razr. Good luck!

Thanks very much for the helpful response. Both carriers are neck and neck reception-wise, with VZ probably slightly better. I have used Sprint's femtocell and was considering the counterpart for whichever carrier I go with, as it's been my understanding my signal is not adequate for a booster, but hooking up to DSL does work great. I have looked at a Wilson model booster before, and might give that another look after hearing from you. I don't know much about that option. In any case, I'm going with Costco for carrier and phone, and am going to try to hold off for Black Friday, just in case, but might not make it, especially if my N2 gets sold first. Thanks again.
amplification & mini cell tower
for voice, texting and 3g in a poor coverage area Verizon offers a free or low cost mini cell tower that runs off of an ethernet connect to the internet. when synched you have your own mini cell tower in the house
my situation was odd: i had very good cell and data. then verizon re-did their antenna system and my neighborhood got horrible reception and data. after about 6 weeks of my calling a few times per week and insisting on level 2 techies,
a supervisor approved selling me a refurbed mini tower for $100. or cancelling my contract. i took the tower and that ended my problems for voice, texing and slow internet at home. i have fast interent with good wifi converage all around my house and property.
months later they fixed the antenna problem. my service is not great--like it was 18 months ago, but good. i still use the mini tower and am very pleased. $100 well spent.
you way want to make inquiries before they sign you up. customer service supervisors at verison are generally pretty good.
4g or LTE if you have any signal at all, there is a 4 lte amplifier available for about $250. zBoost SOHO DataBlast 4G Data Booster Kit for Verizon LTE

If you are in a rural area, sometimes there are choices, none of which are great i have no idea what is available with at&t to augment their signals.
i live in a suburb very close to downtown just outside the city limits of miami. when my home area was having problems, 2 miles away at my office, i was down loading generally at over 20mgs. today my office is the same. at home my down load sppeds vary from sometimes mid-teens to 3 to 5 mgs lower end. during the few problematic months, i could not stream video on my cell without wifi at home.

Thanks for the Amazon link, but I don't have enough of a signal to use a booster. I'll have to go with the femtocell once I know my carrier. If not for that, I would have gone long ago to Straight Talk, but no reception aids for them that I know of (unless you piggyback on an ATT acct, but once the ATT acct is gone, so are you). The reception maps at Sensorly.com swayed my decision from ATT to VZ. It's just pretty hard to come out ahead, with any kind of savings, especially if you like to get new phones very often. I always think I love this phone so much, I will never want another, but then I do.
Please discuss in the upgrading stickies in General sections.
Thanks

New phone LG G2 D800 - chronically bad signal issue

Hello xda. I need help.
The Issue: Bought a stock US LG G2 D800, unlocked (but AT&T branded) off a reseller on e bay back in May of 2015. The seller advertises their phones as new/unused. Long story short, the phone basically has been unusable to me for it's main function - to make/receive/maintain phone calls.
I've researched a ton online, and here on xda, but have yet to find a definitive solution for the G2. I first was trying to use the phone on a Tmobile service provider: Family Mobile. Then because of the crapped out signal reception, I tried other service providers because I thought the there was something up with Family Mobile. I tried - Metro PCS, Straight Talk, then finally straight AT&T. My signal fluctuates between 1 and 3 bars of service at home every 30 seconds to 1 minute with all of those service providers. At 1 bar, I'll either drop calls or can't carry on a conversation.
I've spent hours talking to customer service reps and changing my settings with no resolution only to finally put the last SIM card into my old BLU phone and immediately get at least 3 bars of signal at home. Every service provider stated my area of Southern California (I'm just east of Los Angeles) was well covered for voice and data LTE service. For years prior to getting the G2, I in fact had good service at home with my previous phones and most everywhere else (I had been with Tmobile Walmart Family Mobile for at least 4 years before getting the G2).
An AT&T Microcell signal booster at home works, but I need to use voice services everywhere else anybody else would, and the issue is apparent anywhere and everywhere. Once in a while, depending on where regionally I am, it will get full 5 bars of signal, but that is rare.
The phone has a 1 year warranty. I've sent it to LG for repair 3 times and they just give me the run around. First they replaced the camera, then they said they found no problem, finally they said it was a Flash Memory issue. I've read that they blacklist some phones after the first visit for repair.
I read all through this post but found no exact fix for US phones - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46648526#post46648526
The seller sent me another new G2 phone, and guess what, same issue. The first phone was updated to 5.0.2. The replacement phone is still running 4.4.2. Yet the problem is the same, only that the 5.0.2 phone also has the GPS connectivity issue and the hot battery issue.
I still have both phones, although the seller asked me to send back the "bad" phone. From all I've read, the issue is either related to some D800's software or bad design of antenna. I saw the video on the GPS/Signal fix but tried it and that didn't do anything for me.
Some G2 owners from Europe and the Middle East have fixed their signal issues by rooting and going from there. I have never rooted a phone and don't have experience with flashing rom's and related, but I'm willing to learn. Does anyone have any knowledge of a US specific fix for this issue? I'll either stay with AT&T, or since I know Tmobile service actually works (and it's cheaper), I may go back to them, so if there is a software fix, it may be AT&T or Tmobile specific from what I've read.
Thanks.
