Thanks for posting... As we can expect from AT, it was a more technically oriented review and had some of their usual good insights at the component level. Maybe the technical slant of their reviews colored the conclusion, but I felt the review didn't speak enough to the overall strength of the user experience. Not that it was a bad review - it definitely covered the quantitative aspects of the battery, screen, camera and SOC performance - but I think what was missing was balancing that against the experience of actually using the Moto X as a phone.
My plan is to jump on one in another month or two after my current contract expires, so for me there's time to wait for more reviews from actual users to get a true picture.

I tend to agree with you. It is easy to criticize someone on the choices they make but you have to appreciate the effort that they have put in. They may not have made the best android phone but they have gotten a lot of things right. Moto X 2013 was my favorite phone last year since it was a good balance between all the things I wanted in a phone and after going through everything from S5 to M8, I'm hoping Moto X 2014 will be the perfect balance one more time. IMHO, of course.

These battery tests with scripts are not even real world usage, no matter what they say. Scripts running could bring in other factors, like wakelocks, blah blah blah. So it boils down to users, and their usage. I am betting it'll be fine with me

+1, I would be happier with a bigger battery but I'm fine with 2.300mha. According to extensive reviews I saw already I don't believe battery would be a problem but yes I'm worried about the camera. I saw a lot of noise of sample pictures and I take a lot of photos of my children. I'm not saying the camera is bad, it is really great for the price but if I could pay a little more and get a better camera I'd do it right away.
Because of camera I'm thinking about Galaxy Note 4. Great cam and great screen but I had a Galaxy s4 before and I, like many others, dislike touchwiz and the slow updates. Right now I don't know exactly what to do, the price of moto x is extremely appealing and Android L won't take long to show up. I'm fine with battery, I'm fine with the single speaker (it's on front anyway) but the camera is holding me back. Maybe not for so long - but I want to check more sample pictures before jump on the boat.

I feel you. The camera isn't that bad, when I saw pics. It depends on the lighting. But maybe consider buying a small, cheap camera? Moto X + cheap camera = a Note 4 probably. But having two devices is a cause of concern, so I understand
My battery on my n4 is 2100mah and it can't even get half of what Moto X gets. That's pretty good to me, since n4 battery is only 200mah less

You're absolutely right, having two devices is exactly the problem to me. And don't get me wrong, when I talk to much about the camera maybe seems like I want a fantastic and ultimate quality camera but something on par with GS4 that is two years old now or more would be perfect fine to me. I'm complaining but in the end I think I'll do get a moto x. Like we said before, it's not the best android available but when you see the big picture it's a really great and balanced set.
Wow. Thanks for the link to review which I read in its entirety. This is giving me pause and I just received email from moto that my order is in assembly stage. I may cancel the order and wait for Nexus. I also think this phone will be discounted by Xmas like last year. ;(

The thing I found most notable about this review was the complete dismissal of Moto Voice. For me, this was one of the best attributes of the original Moto X, and it worked well enough to impress iPhone users with its text-message-by-voice feature that mostly "Just Worked." Mileage may vary, obviously, for anyone who spends any time in a car this is a potentially very useful feature.
It'd be nice if the battery life reports had come back better, but they seem more or less as performant as the original model which for me was adequate if not ideal. Throw in the turbo charger, which will theoretically provide a useful enough charge of a 15 minute power up and I'm sold.
Pocketnow just posted their review and he got 4 hours screen on time with 18 hours worth of usage and he used it with Moto 360 and all the bells and whistles. He liked the phone so much that he ordered his own since he was using review unit for a few days.
People just find reasons to hate on something. Motorola is like the guru of battery management. I start using my Moto 360 around 8am and when I put it back on charger at 10pm, I still have 50% battery left. I'm sure Moto X will be similar and I am not worried about it at all. You're always around a charging port in car, in house and at work so why worry?
It could have been better, could have been worse too but who cares. It's a great device overall and I'd be happy to own one

If pocketnow tested the battery by actually using the phone and not by scripts (which I presume he did), then that just shows that running custom made scripts brings in some other factors that will kill battery. I can't trust reviews solely basing battery on scripts. I've read many reports saying that the phone was used and lasted for over 10 hours or whatever

Using scripts to test battery life is fine, but were they really expecting? If you keep two phones on with roughly the same SoC and roughly the same screensize, but one has a larger battery, of course the one with the larger battery is going to win.
I'm more interested in knowing how the Moto X is optimized. When the screen is off, how frequent are the wakelocks? How is the ROM tailored to optimize the phone's battery life when it's not in use?
Does anyone know a site that runs those kinds of tests?

I used to like anandtech because they could give real world meaning to synthetic benchmarks. I miss the user experience. Even the verge, which always seems very apple biased rated the moto x 8.8 (vs iphone6 9.0), when they verge likes an android phone that much you know it must be good (even if it doesn't have *the best* camera)
Pocketnow basically concluded. It's no better than the predecessor and I agree. Barely an improvement if any.. I had a bad feeling. Maybe Lenovo screwed this up, who knows.

edit: from listening to the review, they're only disappointed with the camera. and, like he says in the vid, their readers actually liked last years cam. i won't say i like the cam on my current one, but it's not total crap either. it's usable.
edit: and the battery. but he ends it with saying he's purchased it haha.
i personally think battery and camera can be slightly underwhelming considering the package as a whole. my only complaint deals more with the screen but we'll see how that turns out.

Ever since I ported my Google voice number over to a real number. I use moto voice non stop while driving. You can kind of make it work on other phones if you do the okay Google on any screen but you have to have it plugged in and have it set to never turn the screen off while charging. There are apps that will read out your texts but none seem as refined as moto assists features. If the next nexus somehow gets moto voice I'll probably end up with that but I'll probably sacrifice battery to get the next moto x. From reading. It seems it's on par with the 2013 moto x at least.

So through a whole of problems with the GS4, and a little stroke of luck, I happened upon a Moto X 2014. I must say, the phone is smooth as butter. But I still feel like something is missing. My battery isn't a great feet, my camera is poor at best. The phone however is the fastest and smoothest I've ever seen an android phone. It makes me melt. But after using the LG G2 which I had for 2 days before this....I miss it comparatively to this. Just as fast, much larger battery, beautiful screen. The Moto X doesn't even have a "power save" feature, and that would at lest be helpful. I almost want to wait for the Droid Turbo, but by then my 14 days would be up. I'm just not sure what to do. So my question to others.....Are you happy with this device? or would you switch, given the opportunity? If so, to what?
In happy, if the camera was better, I would be happier, but I'll hold out for L in hopes of improved camera performance. If not, I have another upgrade in April, maybe grab a turbo if it doesn't look as bad as it has in the leaked photos.
I'm think off going back the LG G2. The camera may be the breaking point for me.

I don't take many pictures, but the ones I have taken have been fine. On par with a majority of the smart phones I have owned except a few that were above average. Most of them are just "meh" and any difference is still not great so I just don't let it get to me. If pictures were priority I would still be on the Lumia 930 hands down, or maybe the iPhone 6 plus, but not most of the Android handsets available that's for sure.
Overall I love the phone though. It just a great phone to use and really when it comes down to it that is what matters. There are things that could use improvement (screen brightness, camera, battery life). But none of those factors are BAD, just not exceptional. I get through a day with ease and the screen is fine except in bright sunlight. The phone makes up for it with a great feel and ease of use. Its super fast and fluid, and little things like ActiveDisplay just make it all that much better of an experience. Of all the phones I have owned in the last year (a lot) it is the first one I feel content with and not pining for a new phone (which is rare for me). I am excited for Android L .
I love my Moto X. I too came from a Galaxy S4 running CyanogenMOD and this is so smooth without having to do any tweaking whatsoever. I've had this phone for 11 days and I already try to wave my hand over other people's phones and expect it to just turn on when I pick it up. These may be new features I can't live without.
Short answer....best phone I have ever owned
I came from the HTC One, HTC One M8, and LG G3. Also had the Nexus 5 as my daily driver before leaving it for LG G3. ... This phone trumps them all (still use m8 for low light photos)
The bad......nothing really. The camera and battery are decent enough.....just nothing to brag on.
As far as performance....nothing is close. So smooth...so fast.....so fluid.
The phone screen looks amazing and the stereo headphone jack is provides the best sound I have heard outside of the HTCOne.
No phone is perfect.....but this phone came very close
I think it's too top heavy and not comfortable to hold. Maybe cuz I got leather and have a subconscious fear of scratching it or something. Ultimately, its fate w/me is doomed due to no root on verizon.
I'll give up the X if nexus comes out on verizon.

This is the only downfall for me as well. I want gravitybox so bad. Just for the PIE controls so I can hide the nav bar. That extra screen real estate along with the one handed reachability would make this phone perfect for me.
I don't care about the camera quality, not a big deal for me. And the battery life is sufficient for me.

you'll be happy that L will bring this:
1. power saver built in
2. native code for camera stuff
3. project volt, which is supposed to help in battery
4. ...and much more
right now, there is nothing on the market that I want. so no, i would not switch. next year, maybe
after a week or so of using its okay. battery life sucks, i dont care about the camera, not sure why but many apps crash on it more than my nexus 5, and i can barely just barely see some hiccups/lag when navigating through the homescreen and some apps ill wait for android L tho

Do you have ART enabled?
This phone is not top heavy, the center of its mass is right in the middle of the phone.
Just balance it on the index finger and you will see.
Best phone I used so far as well. But I never had any flagship devices before. Just a last years moto x, moto g, galaxy i9070... and an HTC one m8 as a phone for work, that's it.
But I saw many friends struggling with flagships while I was enjoying my moto x 2013.
I gave the HTC one m8 back to my boss and use the mx2013 now for my work and the mx2014 for private uses.
The mx2013 gave me an excellent experience, so I had no other choice than buying its successor.
BTW I hated the m8 even compared to the mx2013.
If Motorola doesn't **** it up, I'll buy their devices for a long time.

It's in developer options. Don't enable it. Several users have reported an increase in force closes.
It's a bigger, faster, smoother moto x. If you liked the 2013 x but wanted something bigger, this will make you happy.
I like it, originally I let all the negative reviews get to me and even went back to my nexus 5 for a day. Then I realized how much nicer the moto x is. Its a great well rounded device. Unlocked bootloader with full warranty in tact, good camera, decent battery life, fast updates, near aosp and other great specs. Oh, and every time I'm on the phone I can smell wonderful leather lol.

Unlocking the boot loader on the pure edition does not void the warranty? I have heard it does not but not sure.

That's what I read from the Motorola feedback network administrator, he said they are "treating the pure edition like the 2013 Dev edition."
I love it, but I am interested in seeing what the Turbo and Nexus 6 bring to table, especially since it'll be on VZW. That being said, jumping to 5.2" from 4.7" was noticeable, can't really imagine carrying around 5.96"...
I was playing with the Droid Turbo at Verizon today, and was surprised to see lag using Chrome and other apps. It just doesn't run as snappy as the new Moto X. I then read an article that the Snapdragon 805 chip can handle Quad HD (2560x1440), but really only by itself and not well with other things going on in the background (like animating one thing on top of another).

I realize this is a pro-Apple website, but I believe my eyes in the real world over a website, and the Droid Turbo lagged behind the Moto X 2014 and the HTC One M8. I would say it ran comparable to the LG G3, which I also noticed lagged more than the M8.
If it's true that these manufacturers are choosing a high resolution just because it's advertised without checking real-world performance, then it's a disappointment, because they could have gone with a lower resolution and gotten better performance, speed, and battery life (and it's not performing for 2 days in reviews as advertised), at a compromise of a hardly-noticeable change in pixel resolution. I couldn't even tell a pixel difference between the Droid MAXX (720), the Moto X 2014 (1080), and the Droid Turbo (1440) without getting close and squinting, and they're all 5" screens.
Can someone root their Droid Turbo and lower the resolution to 1080 to see if they get a better frame rate and battery life? I'm thinking of doing that but I'm not sure what I lose.
The LG G3 is the same QHD resolution but with the older 801. No lag for me there either. I think it's just you.

I think I just notice it whereas you don't, lucky you. I've been doing this since 320x240, I can tell you when a game or TV show is running less than 60 frames per second (and when a game is 30fps as opposed to a TV show at 24fps, like Seinfeld), whereas I've noticed other people either don't notice or barely notice. If you're the type that doesn't notice, good for you, but the more apps you install and more things you do on the phone, the more it will be compromised with an underpowered chip.
I can tell by how quickly you responded you either didn't read the article or for long.
If nobody else notices, great, back to my question: Will someone who roots the phone please leave a review of the phone at 1920x1080 as far as performance and battery life?
I know there are people on this forum who can tell the difference in frame rates, and lag will bother them. I'd love to know how you improved the phone (the Moto X 2014 still impressed me the most at the store, though I want more battery life).
Just wait until Lollipop hits this phone. It is buttery smooth on Nexus 5 so can't wait for this phone to get. Also BTW I notice no lag either.
I usually notice these things as well (I did with the g3, which is why I didn't get it), but with the store demo or the one in my hand, I see absolutely no lag so far.

There's no way to root the phone
No lag on my Droid Turbo
It seems really snappy and is way faster than my old G2 i had. I will never use another LG phone cause I went through 3 of the G2s. I too cant wait for Lollipop to come to the Turbo..

Well, not yet anyway.
I dunno, my phone feels super smooth. Pretty much like playing a game at 60fps. Haven't noticed a bit of lag yet other than in the camera's viewfinder. I guess every model will differ a bit here and there though.
Well, I guess I got the only three laggy Droid Turbos at Verizon, because they were consistent this way, and the other phones were consistent their way, and if I had to choose without knowing anything else about the phones but what I saw there, I would have chosen the Moto X 2014. I'm still just banging my head on the wall with the decision to use 2560x1440 on a 5" screen, when that's not even noticeable to me or most people without squinting up close, and the battery life (and apparent performance) loss that just goes with an increase in resolution. The more pixels, the more power.
I own the G3 and the turbo. There is 0 lag on this thing. Compared to Tue G3, it runs laps around it. Everything is just faster and smoother

I didn't play with the display model, but maybe it's a demo mode thing? I know they have all that junk loaded onto it to showcase the device. Might be bogging down the system there.
As a huge supporter of this phone and someone who has been waiting a long time to have it in hand.... it has hiccuped on me a few times through transitions. ONLY minor hiccups, though. The CPU intensive things fly. Leaps and bounds better than any of my prior Android devices.
Overall it's performance has been way beyond that of my M7, G2, and Moto G of the past year. I'm going to play around with spare parts and what not. Maybe I can speed up animations even more.
Thank you for the intelligent replies here; with all the trolling on Twitter and YouTube and terrible replies I get at lesser forums, these have been the most intelligent (and actually cogent) replies I've gotten to tech issues I've posted in a long while. I really was expecting less, especially since some of what I said may have sounded incendiary. Thank you XDA for elevating the rhetoric!
I also noticed the floor models lagging a little bit when I went to get my Turbo today.

Undoubtedly, this device would probably perform in top-form if it were rooted, with an unlocked bootloader. Unfortunately, with the most recent discovery of the root exploit for some Sammy/Moto devices (towelroot) Qualcomm and Moto have made damn sure that from here on out, exploits like that won't happen again (or as easily). I figure with 3 Gigs of RAM, a quad-core CPU, and hopefully Lollipop down the line, we will have a beast of a device that will take us through 2 more years of minimized lag, before something better is invented.

I realize this is a pro-Apple website, but I believe my eyes in the real world over a website, and the Droid Turbo lagged behind the Moto X 2014 and the HTC One M8. I would say it ran comparable to the LG G3, which I also noticed lagged more than the M8.
If it's true that these manufacturers are choosing a high resolution just because it's advertised without checking real-world performance, then it's a disappointment, because they could have gone with a lower resolution and gotten better performance, speed, and battery life (and it's not performing for 2 days in reviews as advertised), at a compromise of a hardly-noticeable change in pixel resolution. I couldn't even tell a pixel difference between the Droid MAXX (720), the Moto X 2014 (1080), and the Droid Turbo (1440) without getting close and squinting, and they're all 5" screens.
Can someone root their Droid Turbo and lower the resolution to 1080 to see if they get a better frame rate and battery life? I'm thinking of doing that but I'm not sure what I lose.

I bought one and it does not have any lag. So far it has been real solid. Camera is great...battery life is too early to tell. But no lag.
But C'mon man.......quoting Apple Inside about a Android phone! That site is the most pro Apple anti Android site on the internet. Not a good source...........

Did you read the article? It's completely backed up by technical specs and facts. Theyre not hating just to hate. The iphone 6+ has been regarded by many non baised review sites as the smoothest graphics of any phone.
Read the article, it has useful info. Theyre pushing display resolution ahead of chipset performance and its showing.
I have had mine for almost 24 hrs and absolutely no lag whatsoever. Downloaded the AnTuTuBenchmark app and it DESTROYED the top score of the highest rated phone in the app which was the HTC M8. Since I work at Verizon..I had a coworker downloaded and run the benchmark test on his Note 4 and it came in around 2-3 spots below the M8. Love the QHD display...the only thing that keeps this phone from being perfect is the lack of simultaneous using data and voice use on LTE that's only temporary though...but otherwise..I have ZERO complaints. Absolutely crushes my DroidMaxx by comparison.

so tell us what you think about it, the feel on the hand, how fragile does it look and feel (is it slippery like the sony phones with glass, grippy?) , hows the performance of the camera, screen, battery, etc.
It's only been half a day but my early impressions are as follows,
-Fingerprint scanner is wicked fast.
-Screen is beautiful
-It is fast fast fast. I love Samsung devices and I admit that lag was always an issue. I have not been able to slow it down yet. Really I havent. Lol. Even the recent app switcher is fast.
-Like the themeing a lot. I can't wait for more themes.
-Feels good on the hand. The edge does make it a bit different to hold but I love the curved screen. Makes using the phone a pleasure.
-I have only taken a couple pictures but they turned out great. More on that later.
I'm sure I'll have more as the days pass..
I played with the phone in a T mobile store. For about 20 minutes battery was down to 93% from 100%.,Power hungry. Could you guys confirm?
Also I found the browser cannot hide the status bar hence no full screen browsing. Please also confirm this?
S6 edge in the bestbuy which is unbranded has no ability to sort the menu alphabetically. But T mobile edge has an option to sort.
You're correct on the status bar. Too early to know on the battery. The option to sort might have come in the software update that dropped today. Not sure though.

Yup, that an Edge, and damn did she slam that hard! Good to know it can survive what she just did, lol.
From a performance point of view there is no doubt in my mind the Edge is going to be great, the only doubt is battery life... I realise its a bit early for conclusions yet but once people have used their phones for a week or so, its the questions that everyone wants answering. Everyone's use patterns are different but as long as I can make it through a heavyish day ok, I'll be happy with that.

It's battery is only 7% less in capacity than S5, so I see no reason why battery life would be extremely different. The screen has higher res, but CPU is much more power efficient.

Yes...still, I'd rather yes some real numbers from someone who actually has the phone. We know very little about its battery performance yet, and I have seen mixed reviews with some saying its good and others poor.
I should just say that I have the phone pre ordered and I'm looking forward to getting it, battery is the only doubt I have...I'd just like to see some numbers and I think most other people would too.

I have pre-ordered it as well, but it is still 2 weeks before shipping. We will all see in due time. People in the US are already getting theirs, so we should have some info within a week as batteries start working normally after a few charges.
Also could you guys confirm available free memory?
I went to Best Buy yesterday to get a look at the S6 edge. Needless to say, I was very impressed. Touchwiz seems lightning fast compared to 4.3 on my S4. The shortcuts and ease of access really convinced me to buy this (when green comes along). The edge display looks absolutely amazing and does, in fact, feel more immersive. I love the metal frame and the new headphone jack location. Basically, this thing looks and feels all-around perfect. The black looks BLACK in person, whereas online it gave me the belief that it was a deep-blue. Don't know if I want to settle for the white 32GB or wait a month or two in hopes of the green appearing.

Eh, you forgot to mention that the screen was actually more efficient, too. Not only is it 14nm, the screen is like 23% more efficient than the screen on the Note 4, iirc.

I was not aware the screen would be more efficient with that much higher resolution, but that is a good thing to know as well. Might mean all this whining about smaller battery size is just for the sake of whining.
Thanks for your answers guys. Today again I walked into Best buy and T mobile stores to do my research more. What I found,
Battery: Yesterday when I played with the phone I suspected it to be Power hungry. But I think I should take it back. Battery is ok not bad after all. I am comparing with my LG G2(has a good battery, 3000mah) and I measured the time it takes to drop every %. S6 takes a little more time than the G2 to drop which tells me the battery is good. Also the picture below. I don't have an S5 so I can't really compare with that. I played a couple of games that were installed on the phone and the battery is still ok. This is by no means a scientific way of measuring, neverthless I wanted to share this with you guys.
Although I have chargers at home, car and work still a good battery(if not the best) gives a sense of confidence. and satisfaction that I have the best phone irrespective of all the breath taking features. Don't you agree?? S6 may not disappoint I believe.
Browser/Browsing: Browsing is a breeze. No sense of lag anywhere. But the status bar doesn't hide which I assume is a part of Lollipop. I would be curious to see if a dev can come up with a mod. A full screen immersive browsing on the S6 's beautiful screen would be super cool.
Youtube/Video: Flawless like its predecessors. Nothing special to mention.
Music: Flawless sound like its predecessors. No distortion. Sound is very clean with the headphones. I listen to a lot of Music and sound quality is very important for me. When I played the music on speaker I felt some vibration I wonder what that is??? I wonder if it is the speaker giving the vibration.
Menu:Arrangement of the apps in the menu is nice and simple although I would prefer the icons to be a little smaller. T mobile phones come with an option to sort alphabetically. AT&T don't have the phone for display yet(Slackers:crying so can't tell. All in all I like this new menu. No complaints.
GPS: I didn't spend a lot of time here but I thought it locked quick enough. Nothing special and no complaints.
Screen Quality : I thought the screen is much better than S5 (in the store) and on par with the note 4. But my G2 has a different color temperature which I believe make whites look a little bluish where as S6 whites are yellowish. To me both are ok. But I really have to admit the additional pixels on S6 make no difference in picture quality (S6 vs G2). Really a 1080p screen would have been enough. To clarify I am not complaining, just my opinion. Viewing angles are good unlike G2 (LG's for that matter).
I have to tell you, normal people passing by with no phone knowledge would stop by and take a glimpse at the edge screen, They all seem to like it. Seems like edge is getting all the attention it deserves.
Build/Design: This is where S6 edge outshines every other phone in the market. In my opinion, till date this the best design ever period. I have seen some complaints about finger prints. It is not bad after all. Looks like white takes less finger prints than others. Excellent build quality and feels solid in hands. Thums up.
Single handed use: It can be used single handed with no issues. Menu is set up for single hand use which I really like. Although my hand is not very big it fit nicely in my hand. Not sure about the non-edge S6. Should be the same.
Speed This is one thing that is very crucial. All android phones I used so far tend to be fast initially but as I go adding/deleting apps and other files phone tends to get laggy. It really gets on my nerves. But even as a brand new phone they stutter at times. But with S6 it is blazing fast. No lag anywhere (at least I did not see). App drawer is a little slow to open. Samsung probably configured it to be slower on purpose. Some might misunderstand it to be a lag, just a heads up. Speed speed speed is what it is.
Camera: I need not specially tell you about the camera. There are expert reviews which claim this to be the best camera. Flawless. Double press on the menu opens the camera in split seconds which is very impressive.
I care less about the heart rate sensor so did not test it. Although I care about finger print scanner I could not test it because it is not my phone.
This is a big leap forward not just for Samsung but for android as a whole.
I was disappointed about the battery yesterday but liked it today and took some time to test all the features. I like the phone, will get one. White Color 32gb. AT&T.

I think he meant the true amount of RAM available. (Should be less than 3 GB)
Status bar maybe due to Lollipop. Its present on my Pure Edition Moto X and my Atrix HD running CM12.

I've been away from all this phone thing for a couple of years. In fact, I was never very much into it, I just used to buy whatever flagship there was at the moment as that would usually be cheaper - a phone that would last for a long time and be able to keep getting support. Seems like things~have changed quite a lot and flagship phones are waaaay too big and cost what they cost because of a lot of stuff I don't use or need.
I currently own an LG G2, which from my searches seems to be still very up to date. Best two things about it is the size and screen/body ratio that allows for single hand use; big battery (3000mah). It's getting old though and I was thinking of replacing it but I'm lost.
This X Play got my attetion mainly because of the price, battery life and the near stock Android which should be easy and quick to keep up with Android updates. Motorola being owned by Google made me think these would get a fast and prompt support.
But after reading and watching a few reviews, I'm no loner sure I should spend my money. A few specific questions and a more general one:
- Many reviews end up saying battery life is nowhere near the values claimed with regular use, with screen on times of about 4 hours (web browsing and such). Is that the case? Lower spec Snapdragon and over 3600mah sound like it would last a lot more.
- How are updates with Motorola and what would it mean in the future, now that it's going to Lenovo? Is Pure close to owning a Nexus or no?
- Do benchmark numbers like Geekbench mean anything? My old G2 wipes the floor with this one if they mean anything, making a lot less sense getting it. It would be a huge downgrade.
And the more general and probably more useful question for me...
- Are you happy with this phone and why? If you know the G2, is it worth replacing it for this one? I mainly use these things as phones, web browser, social media and light games when I need to kill some time (no crazy high spec FPS games or watching movies or playing music). An immediate disadvantage to me is that this phone is already a bit too big for my liking. Borderline too big though, so pluses could easily outweigh this.
Just to give you guys a bit more context, the Nexus 5x would be my no brainer choice if it had at least 3000mah battery. Like the OnePlus X for size, specs and price but I think my current G2 is clearly a better phone on pretty much everything.
Sorry for the long post but you see I don't have a real clear idea of things, so I can't really make very specific questions. Any thoughts appreciated regarding these generalities! :fingers-crossed:
- Considering the primitive specs sheet and the huge battery, the battery life could have been better. But still it is better than most of the other phones available now
- It's almost a Nexus except for perhaps the dialer and a few motorola goodies thrown in. From my past experiences with Motorola phones, the first update is quick, the second comes a bit late
- I like holding the Play in my hand better than G2, it feels more sturdy.
- If not for the Motorola goodies, it's not worth the upgrade (assuming your G2 is still holding up). The battery life is only slightly better (but much much better than G3).
- If it matters to you, there is no Gyroscope in Play. The camera on X play is slightly better but again there is no OIS.
- x Play is water repellent. I am one of those people who don't use a cover and am more than happy to take my phone out when it's drizzling or snowing
Personally i am disappointed with the screen on X play. The previous versions of Moto X had an AMOLED screen and the Moto Display was great on it, and up to the mark on the LCD screen.

I've been asking around but it seems I'm keeping my money and my G2. I can't really find a phone that is a solid, all round improvement over it and that justifies spending the cash. Oh well... :highfive:
Honestly dude, this is a very good value phone. Performance with the underpowered chip is really pretty good minus the occasional hiccup (I don't game, but I like a fluid ui... which this definitely has 99% of the time. Sometimes it'll hang for a bit under load but sorts itself out pretty quickly and is a very minor nuisance). The battery is a beast too. I dunno what setup the other guy has that he's only getting average BL (xposed cuts life in half I've noticed, so I stopped using it), but mine is great. Build quality feels kinda cheap and the way it rattles when it vibrates makes me cringe, but this is not a flagship phone. I got mine for 150 CAD outright on a carrier promo, but honestly I'd still be satisfied if I paid double that

Battery life is very nice on this phone in my opinion. I average 4 hours SOT and I'm mostly on cellular data and have a BT headset on all day. Even then I'm only down to around 45% give or take.
Performance is great for me. I had a Nexus 5 for a while and that was really the only other Android phone I have had that was as fluid or more fluid than this phone. The S6 and iPhone 6 had hiccups in the ui, even more than this phone.
All that being said though, if your G2 is still working nicely, I would highly recommend just sticking with it. Maybe invest in a new battery and a case to freshen it up. The new Qualcomm chips don't really seem to be that much more powerful than 2 or so generations ago. Even ram counts and storage space haven't gone up as much as I would have expected. Kinda like we have hit a brick wall. I expect that a flagship phone shouldn't start off with 16gb anymore... Looking at you Apple.

Thanks guys! I was sort of doubting my conclusion... from what I was seeing, there's no real differences in usage for the perspective of an average user. Its a good thing though, a cheap(ish) phone like this would actually give me a better experience over some (all) the current flagships.
I might be getting old, apparently I'm no longer a member of the market when a company thinks about a new phone... From what I've seen, my perfect phone would be the combination of 3 current models and that combination doesn't exist: OnePlus X for size and looks, Nexus 5x for the stock Android and this Play for battery life.
I came across some Chinese phones that claim crazy insane MAH batteries(*) but, knowing how they go about rewrapping batteries and LiPo packs with absurd numbers that are impossible, I'm not even looking into those. If they are for real I'll eventually hear something about them...
(*) Google "Ulefone Power" just for kicks...

I'm only 26 myself and I feel like in the older part of the market these days! I had been contemplating some of those cheap Chinese imported phones myself, but found the X Play in store and that's what changed my decision. I'm overall happy with it. Mobile CPUs have seemingly advance more in the midrange/low range sector than the high end chips.
I don't see any reason to buy a flagship phone any more, or if you do, buying an older generation phone for the cost savings. Especially if you unlock the bootloader and load other firmware.

Well, I guess one gets used to certain things and stops feeling the need for more. But apparently the good thing about flagships to us is that they make what we consider good gear mainstream and affordable. I had to buy a new PC the other day and I ended up with an odd looking and tinny HP Mini i5 8gb plugged into a 32' TV. Waaay cheaper than an entry level gaming rig, does everything I want effortlessly, doesn't take up room... so there's a good thing about getting old (I'm 38 btw)
More on topic though, and picking up your point about past flagships, I've just found the Galaxy S6 Active. I had never seen one of those things before, don't think it was ever on sale here in Portugal. Ugly as hell, looks like something made for the zombie apocalypse but it's an S6 with a top notch battery! That could be interesting, must check that one out better...
If it's not an AT&T exclusive and available everywhere, it would have been an obvious choice for some.

I was comparing the X Play's battery to G2's battery
Compared to most flagship's available now, yes the battery is a Monster but with G2, it's only a slight bump (not the capacity but the actual performance) and i thought he was looking to replace his G2

It can be had unlocked, I've looked into ebay and I can get one from within the EU but they look like unlocked and tested AT&T used units. Price is about the same or higher than a brand new X Play. And despite being checked units with warranty, that still doesn't tell me if it has a fresh battery in it or not - probably not. Getting one from the US is out of the question as with taxes and duties the price could easily be 30 to 40% higher.
That and the fact that it is an AT&T phone. My current one is also an AT&T branded unit and it's a PITA to update it. No OTA updates for me as I'm not in the US and the phone has to be registered to the network to get the updates - or something like that, don't really know that works but I have to manually flash it.

I sort of am yekollu, but it's not like I need a new phone because mine is about to die, it's more the capricious wish to have a new toy. My G2 is getting old in the way it has some scuffs to the body (mostly hidden by a low profile case) and battery went through many cycles already but its health is still good. I just thought that after a couple of years not looking into phones things would have leaped hugely and the most recent models would wipe the floor with the G2. Some do but only in high end games I don't play and at the cost of having to have the phone constantly charging.
I still haven't gave up on the idea of a replacement and the X Play is a strong candidate as battery life is more important to me than most things but I'm not yet convinced I'll feel like it was money well spent. I do appreciate your and other people's feedback as reviews have wildly different numbers and results, and I don't know how some of those numbers translate to everyday real usage. :highfive:

If it's battery life, go for X play!! Like i mentioned earlier even though it's slightly better than G2, it's much better than most other phones available now (I still use my G2 as standby phone).

I just got another email from GB about the Elephone P9000 Power... at 180 bucks from China (so import duties most likely on top of that), and from a couple of youtube reviews I've seen, might be something worth the punt. As fas as I can tell, it runs stock Android also. It's a big 5.5 screen but so is the Moto and this thing looks a lot more compact. Sounds and looks too good to be true, so I'll have to look more into it. If what they, costumers and reviewers are saying is true, this is the real flagship killer and best phone to beat by a country mile.
...man, 6050mah battery?? And stock Android so no more ties to a company I don't know on the update side of things?

Dont buy those chinese phone. Their battery capacity is only good on paper. Im not even sure that they put real capacity on it
I'll post these screenshots to give you an idea of my battery usage. It's a beast in standby with MM as well my friend. I haven't modded mine much either, just rooted and gravitybox.
Oh I actually just remembered another phone that may interest you. The Alcatel Idol 3 5.5. It doesn't have the same size battery, but similar chipset. I played with it in store and it seems quite capable. I'm not sure about software updates though, haven't heart about MM for it yet.

Of course not... I can't even find their site. Or maybe a do but if that's their site... To make it worst, I know the brand from the electronic cigarette world, which was the only thing that worked at stopping me from smoking. They have a very cheap device with awful QC. They sound like a brand that will trough an electronic device together if they can find some NOS parts and with no clear focus or market.

Thanks! The more I look into this, and even without an urgent need to switch phones, the more interesting it looks. What sucks here in Europe is the price. It's a good price at just under €400 but no quick charger or anything. And the phones like the G4 or the Nexus 5x can be found cheaper. All worst on battery but still hard not to think about those for the price...
The US gets much nicer stuff, no fair! The Moto Droid 2 Turbo (or something like that) looks like a beasty, including battery life. But just like the S6 Active was an AT&T exclusive, the Droid 2 is a Verizon exclusive. No Moto Maker also but that's not a real bummer with the Play, I would end up with a similar look for it anyway. Not a fan of metal or matchy matchy colours that aren't either dark grey or black.

The G2 has a great battery life only because most flagship phones suck at that. I came to the G2 from an HTC OneX, flagship for less than a month because HTC released the OneX+ right away and without warning there would be such a thing. Essentially the same thing with a bigger battery because the original would last half the time of a G2. So the LG looked amazing to me.
I now can't say for sure but I'm pretty certain I could go through a whole day of heavy use when I owned the first Galaxy. Those AMOLED displays wouldn't use much battery... you couldn't see a thing when on the outside but they were great little phones when in dark, smoky bars frequented by ladies of dubious reputation

You can try samsung galaxy a7 2016.
Touchwiz is better now and the screen and battery is great
Thanks for the original poster for this thread, because i am actually looking at the exact same doubt. I don't own a G2 right now, but i did in the past and i achieve 8 something hours SOT. I also found the battery life reviews tricky, with some stating massive stand by times and others just getting 4.5 hours SOT.
Also... the price difference is huge right now. We can get a decent G2 for 150 CAD$, and a moto x play on Wind carrier, still sells for 450 CAD$, plus tax, which totals 500$...
Shouldn't we be all achieve at least 8 hours with moderate usage? web browsing, calls, texts, facebook?

The difference in SOT amongst users comes down down to different usage scenarios.
Battery life will deplete according to 2g/3g/4g mode.
Also whether mobile data is used or wifi is used also counts.
The brightness at which phone is used also counts.
The signal reception of area again counts.
