Is there any way to gain root for most recent att s4 update? Build number is KOT49H.I337UCUFNC1
I've been asking the same question every since the update as well. I was hoping to install a Custom ROM on my phone, but I am playing it safe until it's been confirmed workable with the latest update. As a back up, I've seen people mention it's possible to rollback this update to NB1. I've had no luck so far pulling up a thread about rolling back updates, though...

Are you able to access your external SD? I too have the same Build and have lost access to my SD, can't root, or unlock, even using the Network Unlock code from AT&T. I've lost apps, it has slowed waaaaaaaaaaaay down, and the battery is not lasting, even with Powersave. I just got this phone and the guy I bought it from factory reset it. There was an update that accepted, but it stopped and said I had to restart the update for some reason. I did, but it is still 4.4.2, but now has a different Security Software Version, MDF v1.0 Release 2. It won't accept USSD codes and gives me a 'connection error invalid mmi code' message.
Are you having the same issues? I sure wish I could find something on this. Every time I try to search, it changes the I337UCUFBNCI to "Did you mean: i337ucufnb1?" I can't find anything totally, just bits and pieces. UGHHHHHH
Success, I couldn't find a step by step tutorial to fix my issue but thanks to a full nb1 .tar and a couple other files all given by contributors I was able to odin download to reset the custom icon to official then I had to odin download the full nb1 .tar. after doing this I did the ota att nc1 update and my phone is good as factory. Until I decide to root again that is.
If you would like some help let me know

I would like some help! How were you able to root fnc1? ! And is safe strap the only custom recovery that will work I'm guessing?
thanks in advance.
adam
I did not root nc1, but it is possible thanks to some very smart contributors. I was previously rooted and wanted to unroot to factory. I became unrooted but my system was still unofficial and custom which I was having a problem getting rid of so I can trade in my phone in the future for credit. Just search nc1 root on xda and you should find the info. Its a bit of a process but you should be able to figure it out. You need to odin download back to nb1 first and go from there. If you would like some additional help I can try to give some advise but I'm no expert or developer just an enthusiast

It will help you maybe: HERE
Reboot your phone into download mode and use the NB1 full odin tar. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...66&postcount=2
Use the MK2 downgrade method to obtain root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2663545
Then use the NC1 keep root http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2730144
This should help.

Rooting I337UCUFNC1
Hi. I have followed the threads for a while on rooting my I337. I purchased it used a month ago and really want to root it and install a custom rom. But by reading all the threads I am confused and somewhat worried I will brick it!
Can someone explain to me real clearly what software and files I should use to obtain root on AT&T I337UCUFNC1 and install a custom rom? I am ok with downgrading.
Thanks much.

There is a few threads in General where people have done it successfully . I don't know if I would be willing to try it , but it has been reported to have worked for at least 2 people so far.

People have done it successfully, but the OTA only installs if your system files weren't modified at all. I couldn't the OTA to install - probably due to changes I made in Xposed. I'm going down the leak KK route for now.

OTA failed for me as well. I have removed or frozen just about anything Verizon. Waiting for the MD5 firmware from Sammobile to download so I can try to Odin the file
SuperSu survival mode
Well, I took the leap.. downloaded the md5 file from sammobile and flashed via Odin.
Alas this is not the way to keep root. I no longer have root. And now have all the bloat from Verizon back on the phone.
So much for trying to be a pioneer.
Now where did I put that hammer.....

Does anyone have any tips or what to look for if the update keeps failing?
I had Xposed Framework installed...and I think that's the only thing that I had installed that modifies system files...but I uninstalled it's modifications from within the framework app itself, then unistalled the framework apk, then all of the module apk's, then I disabled SU, but the update still won't take...
Anyone have any ideas without losing all my stuff?
Thanks!

But if I follow this thread:

I just want to return to latest JellyBean (MJE) stock, root (with Kingo), and then update to NC4 with root intact.

I just wanted to report back and say everything went great and I am now on NC4 with root! Yay!
Just for the record, in SuperSU I had set SuperSU to DISABLED, then set the Survival Mode to ON, then set default action to DENY. Not sure if that matters, but that's what I had and it worked.
Thanks for the tips everyone!

To clarify, how did you finally get the OTA to take in the first place? I did the same as you - uninstalled Xposed modules and framework, reverted framework-res, disabled SU, unfroze any applications, but OTA failed.
EDIT: Or did you Odin back, then disable SU, then OTA? Just confirming before I do it
Thanks!
If you really want to keep root I would not flash NC4 at all, you're risking the possibility of never getting it back. No one has found any major changes from NC2 to NC4 so you really won't be gaining much but could lose a lot.

Yeah, I hear ya. I generally like to just stay stock+root, though, so staying with the official OTA is generally my preferred route. Might just wait and see what comes out in the next few days.
Simple question, I've searched for 3 days and all I see is "use towelroot" which is no longer available.
So is it just impossible to root a 3 month old Verizon Galaxy S5?
Thank you and I appreciate this site greatly.
Good evening.
As of right now, if you are on Lollipop, then yes it is impossible to root the G900V. Hopefully, soon we will find a way to root it again.
Pardon my ignorance, but is it not possible to flash back to a previous version of Android, root it, and then install the new kernel?
Edit: nevermind, reading comprehension fail. Towelroot is no longer available?

I'm trying to help a family member root their new phone. The most up to date guide I've found here is for the previous update (NI2) and I haven't seen anything for the Verizon NK2 version. Is it still possible to root this version? If so do you know where I can find out how?

I believe that flashing the kernel would work but you would have to work your way through a lot of FC's. I normally flash a full tar but you having a brand new phone, this probably isn't necessary but it is what I normally do ( below is the tar file I use. It is a complete internal wipe to a like new phone on NGC). Root with towelroot, download SuperSU from play store, update the binaries and reboot. I would suggest safestrap. You would need to download from play store then install busybox first. Then install safestrap and install its recovery.

I'm pretty familiar with how rooting the S5 works before updates as that is how I did mine (froze the updater and didn't have time to figure out how to safely update). What I am confused about is what I do when coming from a later software version, the guide is even called "Safely Upgrade and Root..." not how to downgrade and root, and the guide to update to lollipop seems to require already being rooted.

Ok, I had found that guide before getting this new phone for my phone but didn't look at it again since I remembered that it had to be rooted already and was assuming I had to root on an earlier version hence the confusion.
Its understandable why people without root don't read it or at least don't read on down.
I'm looking for some help to return to stock on my Note 3. I'm a very casual rooter and don't flash any ROM's. The only reason I rooted in the past was to get free WiFi tether but we now have that for free on our account (family plan.) My wife also has the Note 3, completely stock, and has gotten several updates and is now on lollipop.
I rooted about a year ago, maybe 14 months. I used a method that at the time was very popular here... safestrap and Odin. Easy to follow. I've rooted every phone I've had going back to the original Droid but I've never gone this long without returning to stock so I'm a little worried about the process. Everything is backed up and ready to go on the device.
I would like to return to stock and then take the OTA's up to Lollipop.
This is my current setup:
Safestrap 3.72 (TWRP v2.7.0.0)
"Stock" boot option
4 Empty ROM slots
SM-N900V
Phone 4.4.2
Baseband: N900VVRUCNC2
Kernel: 3.4.0
Build: KOT49H.N900VVRUCNC2
Hardware:N900V.07
SuperSU v2.46
As a side note, what's the current thoughts about lollipop, if I take the OTA's up to it am I hosed if I were to want to root? (Not my plan but just in case) Are there benefits over 4.4.2, should I just stay where I am?
Thanks!

Unrooting will make your phone as it was before (loose root access) and you'll be able to update your phone through OTA's.
If you love rooting then you can reroot your device after update.
If you found this helpful, there's a thumbs up button, just press it.

If you love rooting then you can reroot your device after update.
If you found this helpful, there's a thumbs up button, just press it.

Let me know if this works for you. The only reason I rooted really was to change my DPI and I could do without it at this point. I can't update some apps and can't install some now, says my device is not compatible. I have the same setup as you except I have NC4.

Ok, going to try this tonight.. sorry for the long delay in responding. I'm going to be trying the Super Su method, according to Hitman-XDA it will work for me. My last question is will this also unlock my phone along with unrooting? Currently I am unlocked and rooted.. I mainly want to return to stock to nab OTA's that I've missed out on. Also my VM is broken and I'm fairly positive that will fix it.
Ok, I did not use the SuperSU unroot feature, I read quite a bit more and from what I came to understand it would not work.
I used ODIN to flash a stock version of 4.4.2, that worked great and fully unrooted me. It did not re-lock my bootloader but 4.4.4 OTA was waiting and it locked the bootloader in the process of updating. Then I got 3 or 4 updates taking me all the way to 5.0 with no issues.
Heads up, from what I could find there is only 1 place to download a stock 4.4.2 firmware, rapidgator... it sucks and was really slow to DL. I let it go overnight. When done unzip it, use ODIN and G2G.
Can you upload the firmware file to mega.co.nz ? and share the link?
