Simple question, I've searched for 3 days and all I see is "use towelroot" which is no longer available.
So is it just impossible to root a 3 month old Verizon Galaxy S5?
Thank you and I appreciate this site greatly.
Good evening.
As of right now, if you are on Lollipop, then yes it is impossible to root the G900V. Hopefully, soon we will find a way to root it again.
Pardon my ignorance, but is it not possible to flash back to a previous version of Android, root it, and then install the new kernel?
Edit: nevermind, reading comprehension fail. Towelroot is no longer available?

I was looking at using this tutorial to root my phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2314494
I went into my about phone, and saw in baseband version, i337ucuamf3 for the baseband version. mf3 is also in the build number. does this mean that I should not follow this tutorial then?

Look at the second post in the guide. It links you to how to root if you have mf3. Read the whole first two posts as there's good info there.

If you're not sure if you want to root it and why, I'd wait. If you mess something up there is not an odin flashable firmware that can recover your phone with.
To clarify, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387577 will work just fine for your device. I did this with a new S4 that came with that version stock.

Not yet, but I think that there will be a way shortly after Kies releases the MF3 update. I'm not a developer but historically the developers are smart enough they always find a way.
Hey, so I am new to this group! Thanks for existing and being so willing to help!!
So here is my question, I want to root my GS4 but was not able to find good information on how to do so when running Android 4.4.2. I do not want to downgrade to 4.3 so please don't suggest that option. I also (obviously) don't want to brick my phone so a "safe" option would be nice.
My hardware again is a Samsung Galaxy S4 SGH-i337, Android Version 4.4.2, Carrier AT&T, USA, and last three characters of the Baseband version is NB1.
Anyway, any tips, pointers, links or other help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Maybe. I don't know. I downgraded my phone after I updated to 4.4 because I didn't see much of a difference and I wanted to root and flash ROMs.

There's no hard wall, but devs are doing other things like Hash working on kexec and others looking into bootloader exploits and whatnot. May I ask why you don't want to downgrade? The method's been tested and simplified a bit, and you don't need ODIN every time you want to flash a different ROM or mod now.

Thanks for the quick responses! I just got the phone Tuesday (yes I know the s5 comes out tomorrow) and some how I missed that At&t decided to lock boot loaders. I guess at&t is jealous that a group of enthusiast and hobby programmers can produce awesome firmware and doesn't have their trash/bloatware. I'll probably give these a try soon. I think the stock firmware is okay but I do miss my root privileges and aosp/cm/aokp ROMS. Thanks again guys.

Good news... the guy who said there is no way to root 4.4.2 with SuperSU is wrong
Use towel root and then install supersu from market but don't open it yet... Now install terminal emulator open and type 'su' and supersu will prompt. Type into terminal emulator without the quotes of course, 'pm disable com.whateverknoxappnameislol' I can't recall the Knox app name off hand. When you finish close term emu and open SuperSU no and update binaries, then it'll prompt to disable Knox and it'll succeed. Reboot, uninstall Towel Root, and enjoy.

In the play store, download eMMC Brickbug Check. Your CID should start with 11 or 15. Sounds like if you unlocked the bootloader on PB1 and upgraded to PF4, you probably have 15.

Did you follow the instructions under "Prepare to Root?" If you did, you downgraded to PB1 (LL, Android 5.0). I followed the guide yesterday and got root, but I don't wanna unlock my bootloader to upgrade to PF4 kernal and bootloader. Last time I unlocked the bootloader, I lost my 4G. Otherwise, the guide by @jrkruse is really good ^_^ Just have the issue of not being able to run safestrap to do the last step (Flashing Knox Removal). Guess I'll just start from scratch and flash the PB1 retail image and try again.

Is there any possible way to root the Verizon Galaxy S5 running marshmallow? I've done tons of research looking for a method to obtain root, but it seems my variant doesn't have anything going for it. My phone is g900vvru2dpg2, and Android 6.0.1. Hi, bro. There is no method to root MM S5. But you can downgrade to Lollipop 5.0.1 and root it with Kingroot
Install this app from the market and look at the CID.
If it's 15xx... then the answer is "YES", there's a way to have a rooted Verizon Galaxy S5 running marshmallow.
If it's 11xx... then the answer is "NO", only LP.

I had issues during the root process also. What I ended up doing was, after you click on the first bat file, the device sticks at the white screen. Go ahead & do the root process now. The device does NOT have to be booted into the OS for this to root. In fact that's the only way it works. I was able to get mine rooted using the method I linked above.
EDIT: If the root process hangs Close the bat, unplug phone pull battery and reboot phone to recovery (VolUp+Pwr+Home). In recovery wipe cache only and reboot. If phone reboots back to recovery instead, pull battery and manually reboot. Now plug phone back in and Launch Bat #3.
When the above happens you do NOT want to do a battery pull, just go on with the root process.

Well, it's simple.
You need to have MM ROM, unlocked bootloader and TWRP recovery.
If the ROM isn't rooted yet you can simply download SuperSU zip from chainfire.eu and flash it via TWRP.
Bootloader unlocking guide is here.
MM ROM is here or any other you like.

Thank you so much! I was really beginning to think there was no way.
Now using Lineage OS
I have a Verizon Galaxy S5 (G900V) that I rooted a couple of years ago and never updated any further. It's currently running 4.4.4 / NK2 and I've been looking at upgrading to a Lollipop build. I have the Toshiba 11x eMMC so it doesn't sound like Marshmallow is an option if I want to keep root. I've spent significant time rooting through the forums and I can't seem to find a method to update my phone from KitKat to Lollipop (while keeping root) that is current, has the necessary files available to download, and works. Using FlashFire and G900V_OE1_Stock_Rooted_ROM.zip followed by Odin and an OD5 bootloader is failing on my phone for whatever reason. The other methods, including muniz_ri's, don't seem to have current files available for download.
I've fried my brain searching with no success. If anyone could point me to current directions/files to upgrade from KitKat to a solid Lollipop build while maintaining my root access, it would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thank you.
I would Odin this file https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24438995911970571
That will take you to stock PB1 then follow this guide to get root https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/root-method-og5-ok3-t3290370
Then I would use flash fire or LP safe strap to flash a ROM I recommended

Let me add a caveat to that success story. I do notice that I don't have the Safestrap recovery option during the boot up process and it looks like this is expected behavior for Lollipop. Let me add a caveat to that success story. I do notice that I don't have the Safestrap recovery option during the boot up process and it looks like this is expected behavior for Lollipop. The "Reboot to Recovery" option with the app is also not active or functional. What's the best way to get back the full Safestrap functionality? I found the below thread of yours but I'm not sure if the files and instructions are current. Thoughts?

I think I see where I went wrong with Safestrap but it's going to be a little while before I can investigate further. Don't want to brick my phone at work and not be able to phone home.
I'll update after I do some more troubleshooting.
Thanks again.
