Settings --> Search, "Restoring data" - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I noticed on my S5, when I go to Settings, and search, I get a pop up dialog saying "Restoring data".
Does anyone know what this is caused by, and what exactly my phone is doing?

That happen only for the first time when you tap on Search.
That means the phone is restoring (preparing) the data that has been indexed and make it ready for you to search.

It doesn't happen only on the first time though. I've seen it more than once.

After a time it has not been used, it was cleared from the memory to free space.
Once you tap on Search, it will load (restore) again. That's normal.

All seemed logical except for the fact it's been spinning for minutes and is still "restoring data" Of course I haven't done it in awhile and I do have a ton of applications on phone, SD card, etc.

ok, now it's 2 hours later and still "restoring data". Sum Ting Wong
reboot into recovery mode, wiped cache and now after some time, it's no longer running the "restoring data"

Rebooting into recovery mode and wiping the cache did it for me. Wiped the Dalvik cache too for good measure.

i had the same issue a couple days ago. i only found one solution to it on my nexus, and its odd. apparently when you go into settings, applications, application settings, you dont have access to the maps cache like on the g1. so i found another way. only through an app called quick system info was i able to access the application info. there i pressed an uninstall update button, then came back and cleared data. since then its been working fine. i still dont get what update i uninstalled because its the same exact maps i had before.
wow thanks hah that worked

Have deleted some threads that I wwas following but can't seem to remove the posts, real annoying. I'd be happy to clear them all out but can't see a way of doing it, any advice much appreciated!

Thanks but I've already done that.
What I have on the handset is all the twitters/posts/threads I have unfollowed, I want to be able to remove these
Log out of Twitter in the 'Data Settings' page in phone settings and it will remove all tweets, you can then resync your phone to Twitter and it'll get the ones of people you're following...

AH, log out and back in.
twitter tab - menu - settings - tap the top section(account settings) it will clear the cache when you log out, when you log back in it will refresh.
Oh, hang on, maybe it wont..... lol, pretty sure i tried that before and it worked, but just tried now and it didnt......
\Application Data\HTC\Twitter contains photo, you can clear it, it'll sync back
\Temp\TwiEng contains all the post in database. I usually delete it out every few days
make sure you turn off sense first because if Twitter tab is running, it'll lock the file in Temp and you cannot delete it (not sure if you log off, it'll still lock those file or not).
Your right, if you log out and log back in all the tweets are still there. I have considered creating another twitter account to see if switching accounts clears the cache. I also dont think it clears any old tweets automatically so this is an ever growing problem, the longer the device is used without a hard reset the more it will fill and the more lag there will be.
Im not technically minded to suggest anything else, i have tried to find the cache file in explorer but failed.
Can Any of you very clever people out there help on this one?
(yet another poorly tested buggy part of the HD2 .... but hey means we will never get bored )
I went into Data services in the main phone settings tab and turned it off using the toggle. It said it will clear all tweets. I logged back in using the toggle and signed in and had to get them down fresh...

Your right thats what it says, but i dont think thats what its doing. When I do exactly that it does appear to clear them but if you check after its reloaded the tweets, all the tweets are there going right back to your last hard reset (in my case 29th Jan) I have twitter set to download just the last 50 tweets but there are hundreds between the 29th and today.
I have also tried loggong into a fresh twitter account with no tweets, but when I log back into my main one they are still all there. This must be down to a cache file not being cleared properly, question is... where is the little blighter????????

Setting tab -> Menu -> All Setting -> Today -> Items tab -> uncheck HTC Sense then OK out 2 times. Delete file, and then follow same step to check HTC Sense then OK out all the way.

[IDEA] Disabling Wipe In The Settings

Well I Have A Little Idea, I Have Had A Few Friends That Have Gotten Their Phone Stolen, So The Normal Thief Would Turn It On And Wipe The Phone Through The Settings, My Idea Is Taking Off The Wipe Option In The Settings. Now We All Know Those Apps That Help Find Your Phone, Actually Work. But Most Of Us Between Switching Roms, Forget To Install It. So By The Time Some One Is Searching How To Wipe The Phone, We Can Download The App From The Market Webpage And Find Our Phone, Maybe It'd Be Possible To Disguise The Wipe Option In The Recovery Menu? I Don't Know If It's Possible (I'm Sure It Is) Or If I'm The Only One That Is Wanting This.. Let Me Know Any Ideas Or If There Is A Developer That'd Be Able To Help With This
I think it'd be possible to remove the menu option in the recovery by modifying the source but you'd want to enable some sort of combination of keypresses or some script to be able to wipe when you actually need/want to wipe it

I think the average thief maybe would wipe, but he will not use the recovery for that, because he won't know what it is.
If he should know, he will surely just flash back a stock ROM before selling the phone. You won't be able to do anything against that.
If there is only a "normal thief", you could do it another way: You would need an app, that is flashed into the system partition, is working completely stealthy in the background and has all it's configs in the system-partition (maybe for installing and editing the settings there could be a user app with root-access).
If the thief then just wipes the phone, i.e. from within the Android-menu, this app will stay and work. He would have to flash a new ROM to get rid of it.

Hmm So Basically Just Add The App Into The Rom Like Any System App, Ok That Sounds Good Too Lol, And The Only Reason I Know About The Recovery Menu Thing Is Because, If There Is A Password Then Usually Some People Google How To Wipe The Phone If They "Forgot" Their Password.
Cerebrus in rom manager does exactly this, no? Once flashed it runs completely in the background and no way of knowing its there or get rid of it outside of cwm.

[Q] Gallery not working android 4.2.2

As a complete newby I hope I am doing this correctly. My problem is that since updating to android 4.2.2 I have noticed that Gallery is not working. I have also rooted my Nexus 7 so is it possible that this is the problem. Any help would be much appreciated.

OP, try a hard reset, this may help with the gallery npot opening
Does it show up under "All Apps"? I had a similar problem, and it was somehow disabled from there.. no idea why, but I just re enabled it.

Yes it does show under all apps. Not quite sure what you mean by re enabled. If you mean touching it and placing it on the Home screen. I did that and it places it there but when I try to open it a window comes up saying "Unfortunately, Gallery has stopped". I have noticed that when I access the list of apps via "Settings" it is not listed, could this be the problem?

If you did then try remembering if you installed any new app(s) recently and uninstall them.

Perhaps you should look at logcat and see if it has anything of use in it. Perhaps you have a corrupt image, although I'd think the media scanner would just skip it.

[Q] Lag during txt messaging

I have a stock S5 that I just bought. After a couple days I started noticing an extremely long delay when doing anything with text messages. I hit send and it just sits there. I can't hit back or anything. The home button will take me home. When sending I don't even see my message until everything returns. Anyone have any idea what may be causing this? TIA

Clear data will clear all your messages and makes the app like its still new. Probably a corrupted message file or anything can affect its performance.

So it will delete my messages?
This seems to be a well known issue with the S5 although the suggestions don't seem to fix my problem. The solutions also say to clear cache and data on the Samsung keyboard.
Maybe power-saving mode? It kinda lags the mobile. Reduces performance of some stuff to lag to save some battery. Not sure tho

You can back up text messages, i would try that and clear data, see how it goes, if it does nothing then just restore the back up.
Sent from my SM-G900A using Tapatalk
Power saving mode is off. I thought this was related to using the Samsung Smart Switch app to recover everything from my iPhone. So I deleted everything, cleared the cache and data from the message app and the Samsung keyboard app. No luck with that either. However, I did discover the AT&T app for messaging that came pre-loaded on the phone and remembered another article that suggested trying another default messaging app. So I did and that seems to work much better. I know it's not a fix, but at least it's a workaround I can live with. I actually like this app because I have text, call history, and my visual voicemail all in one app.
There are plenty of complaints around the internet about this "bug" so maybe it will be something that gets addressed in Lollipop next month.
Mine lags because of the amount of messages I have stored. Will try to clear cache, but I don't think it works
Well if you looking for a messaging app, google's messenger app is pretty good too!
