Hello all,
I recently purchased a 10 inch version of these tablets and I noticed I couldn't get my VPN connections to work on it. It would connect but then no data was getting through. After I looked high and low I read on a Google android development thread that is is a known problem since the release of KitKat almost a year ago. As far as I can tell there is still no fix for this issue.
I use my VPN account heavily for content streaming and this has caused me to carry around my Windows laptop or my Chromebook when I really prefer to use my tablet for this.
As I understand it there isn't a ROM available for it today that would return the VPN feature like it used to work in Jelly Bean. I welcome any help or info that would get VPN working on this tablet.
Thanks in advance.

I am trying to use PPTP VPN with MPPE encryption enabled to connect to a network with a WRT54GL running dd-wrt-vpn running the vpn server. I know I have the server setup right, and I have added scripts to the server pptpd options file to require encryption "MPPE required" and disable compression "nodeflate". Using a rooted EVO 4G with stock 2.2 Froyo, I am able to connect successfully over 3G or 4G, however traffic only works for about 20 seconds, after that, no web pages will load, no ping, nothing, but the vpn stays connected and never disconnects. I know this has been an issue with Android since 1.6, and you can see the post on code.google, issue 4067, it's been there since november 2009, and has still not been fixed. I'm not asking a question about "what's causing the issue", so please don't tell me to use search just yet , what is strange to me is that if I use my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 running Android 3.1 to tether to my Evo with wireless tether, then I can use the PPTP VPN client in 3.1, and it connects and creates a stable pptp tunnel, and I was able to have stable traffic for hours without anything going wrong (except for the Evo battery temp reaching 100F after some time ). They had reported on that issue 4067 that even the later versions of android don't have a working pptp and ppp0 client, so that's obviously not correct.
Anyway, I read a post here (in the Samsung Epic 4G forum) by member "drunix" from september of last year that said he was going to try to recompile the client with MPPE encryption enabled (assuming that is the issue in 2.2) if no one else has done it yet or tried to fix this yet. I don't think it's just the encryption that is the issue, because even with encryption disabled both on the server and client, traffic dies again after about 20 seconds.
So judging from what that member wrote, even though SO many android phone owners have complained so far about the pptp vpn client not working properly in Android versions 1.x and 2.x, no one has so far successfully fixed this issue yet, no one has even acknowledged or attempted to look at this issue yet so far other than that one member, not even the OS manufacturer. I have a hard time believing that the independent developers here and everywhere else make all these custom roms and kernels and other very impressive things from scratch, but no one has even touched this issue when functional pptp and ppp0 already exists almost on all other computer OS's and other platforms, and iPhone, WinMo and linux ALL have functional clients. All apple users say that they can successfully use the phone to connect to a pptp vpn. I guess this must not be important enough to catch the attention of any devs not only from google, but not even here. Is there any way some of the very knowledgable devs here, who can so easily root any new android version that comes out, take a look at this to see if they can fix it so android can be fully functional in all its included features like apple? I think this is the only major issue where android does not function as well as iOS, otherwise it is ahead of the iphone in every other aspect, so why not try to fix this for those who have the knowledge and fix things that are way more complicated than this?
Thanks
Are you referring specifically to 2.2 versions? If so I cannot answer since I am running 2.3.4 modified stock sense 3.0
Also I have successfully used at least three of the available VPN clients to support a IP/Sec connection to both secured servers and routers (mostly routers) with no drops, lock ups or related.
For me, the VPN clients work and have worked but maybe you are referring to something specifically different.
Hope that helps
Hey guys, this is the noob here. I was foolish enough to go to iOS forums looking for answers but quickly found they're, let's just say, unfriendly. Anyway, my issue revolves around iDevices dropping the PAN connection with Windows Mobile phones after 20 seconds. Is there a registry edit on the WM side to fix this? It's not the ICS app because my ES400 works perfectly on both my Windows 7 laptop and my Mac desktop (OSX 10.6). The PAN connection doesn't fail with an iPhone though. Some Androids like the DX2 work perfectly as well without root or 3rd party apps. This is baffling because I'm not about to give up my ES400 anytime soon.
Same problem here - any closer to solution?

Hi,
I have the same problem here. Got a new iPad for a business project and it will connect OK to an Android phone via Bluetooth PAN (even if phone not connected to internet) and the connection will stay open. However in our case we are trying to connect to a Windows CE 6 device and this exhibits the same behaviour. After around 20 seconds the bluetooth connection is closed even though before it closes you can use Safari and get a webpage up.
Windows CE is closely related to Windows Mobile so hopefully finding a solution in one will also work in the other.
Is there a way to enable the Nexus 7 16GB or 32GB (not 3G) to create a portable wifi hotspot?
I don't need internet connectivity, I just want several Nexus 7s to be able to connect to each other and share data.
I thought I'd find this in a custom distro such as CyanogenMod, (I'm convinced I saw it somewhere on the JDQ39 build), but now I can't even find discussion of it.
Here someone nearly manages it but runs into DHCP problems http://stackoverflow.com/questions/14917450/create-an-access-point-with-the-nexus-7 There is also this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2360631&page=4 but it doesn't seem solid yet, and reliability is my number one issue, (my network of Nexuses will be in schools in the middle of Ethiopian nowhere so remote tech support is my main priority).
Thanks for any comments or views
Chris
Hey guys,
So, I'm on Lollipip (Temasek 10.5 5.1.1 to be exact) and I've found after using it for a few days that one of the new features that Google put in is making wifi really frustrating.
When it detects a wifi as having no internet connection, it puts it into a blacklist so that it doesn't keep trying to connect. Now, as I'm in China, I'm basically getting all my hotspots blocked. I have to manually click each one and Connect.
My question is there any way to disable this or to enter the target server google uses to check if internet works or not? If I could change it to a local Chinese website, then it should be fine too.
Thx
*Update*
Did some googling and found this:

For others with the same question, hopefully one of the solutions provided works for you.
Did not realize the new Fire OS had removed all VPN configuration screens. System files look to still be there, but are deactivated? Planned to use the new tablet as an upgrade for a 2012 Nexus. Worked around all the side load issues until discovered this problem. Use the tablet 75% for fun, but also support many routers and connect back to work. Looking to use Tinc, OpenVPN or PPTP if no other option. Does anyone know how to reactivate the TUN/TAP driver under 5.4.0.0? Nice tablet, would hate to return it. Obviously my fault for not doing more research. Thanks! J

Annoyingly this prevents any sort of VPN based firewall implementations from working.
@Dsuds, Adguard is working perfectly on my daughter's Fire HD 8 (2017). You can try it for free or/then buy lifetime premium version on eBay with good discount.

Not true at all. Netguard works 100% on my HD 8. Works even better when I take time to block individual items while watching live (I have a paid license).
EDIT: Note 95% of the firewalls that exist for tablets and mobile devices are VPN based.
