[Q] Custom Recovery Lost after Flashing cm-11-20141028-NIGHTLY-mb52x.zip - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I met a problem after flashing cm-11-20141028-NIGHTLY-mb52x.zip.
I cannot enter Custom Recovery (TWRP) any more. Other functions are OK, but I cannot upgrade to new ROM now.
Is there a simple way to restore Custom recovery in CM11?
Otherwise, I will have to use the method: "flashing stcok ROM (Android 2.3) -> root -> 2nd Init -> flashing Custom recovery", to restore it.
Thanks in advance.

hi, don't know if you still need an answer but you can try this:

Hi jh20, thanks for the information.
I checked the post you provided. However, my problem is that I cannot enter the Custom Recovery anymore, let alone flashing another ROM.

perhaps i should explained a little more. these are based on memory as i haven't done these a while now.
cwm recovery had been permanently removed from cm11, and you can only flash cm10 and not anything earlier (cm7 or cm9) with cm11's twrp because of ext4 partition. so as long as you can still get into twrp, you can flash cm10 which still has both twrp "and" cwm recovery. cm10's cwm recovery allows you to repartition it back to ext3 and hence allows you to flash cm7.
i did a little google on how to revert from cm10, and here are the hits:
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=...hannel=sb&gfe_rd=cr&ei=rXBiVP7-GqGN8Qfiz4HYCw
and the first one on xda:

if you need more just read the other posts. hope they help.

Thanks a lot, jh20.
I think I made a mistake in the post, that I was not use CWM recovery in CM11, it is TWRP recovery instead. I've update my post to reflect this.
So the problem is that I cannot enter TWRP recovery any more, and cannot flash another ROM or anything via TWRP recovery.
Is there a simple way to restore TWRP recovery, otherwise I have to start from scratch by flashing stock ROM, ...
I'm not trying to go back to CM7.2.

Sorry, not with my knowledge. So unless some experts/developers here have any ideas, you might have to start from scratch.

How do I make a nandroid in CWM when trying new roms?

I have my original OS backed up via the 1 click root method.
I have tried [ROM] Jr6 (JRO03D / 4.1.1): MCR - new: button mods, YouTube with preloading! by Paulobrien.
Tonight I flashed [ROM]| Glazed JellyBean|Version 1.1.2|Glazed Mods|Custom Animations|Speed| by Hyperrunner.
Now, I boot back into recovery and select the backup option, and when it is done, the file is only 20 megs in size, which does not seem right.
So can someone help or point me to a tutorial on how to back up my current rom Nandroid style so I can try out other ones and Nandroid back to ones I end up liking?
Thank you,

So I am at a loss understanding this. Maybe you or someone else can help me.
The first rom I mentioned in my OP says it needed CWM to install. Now I see other rom's that say TWRP recovery to install.
I have no idea on which route to go with doing all these.
Can anyone help me out here in better understanding on what I need to do here?
If I need to install TWRP, what do I need to do now since I have CWM installed to install TWRP?
Thank you,

1. I'm trying to flash any custom ROM.
2. I used to have TWRP and any time I was moving from another ROM I would do a factory rest and wipe data and everything goes fine.
3. I changed to CWM recovery last night ( Install by ROM Manager ) and tried to flash rom ( after do wipe data and factory reset ) it showed it was trying to flash the rom and went ok ( and also gapps too ).
4. I reboot the phone and it's stuck in the samsung logo and won't go through.
5. I tried to flash other ROM as CM, Pac , Carbon, and with all of them same issue.
6. I format everything in the mount section and still not able to go through because it won't flash anything.
Did you Loki doki after flashing the rom?
If said u format everything..then u had wipe all inside ur hp..

You are still not giving enough information. Are you sure the ROM and Kernel were for AT&T or at least could be used on an AT&T phone? Was it already LOKI'd or did you use the LOKI-DOKI script directly after flashing the ROM / Kernel (and GAPPS if applicable) while still in recovery? The ROM Manager CWM version does not auto-loki, only OUDHS CWM auto-lokis.
Did you follow the flashing instruction in the ROM's thread exactly?
If you don't know or understand any part of what I am asking you, you will need to read all of the pinned threads in the "General" section to familiarize yourself with what you need to know.

As I said all of my problem was the CWM and I don't know why it won't be able to flash any zip file.
I was flashing CM 10.2 unofficial that day , no special kernel ( Just ROM ) and PA latest GApps.
But they didn't work and I went to ODIN and stock my phone and rerooted and used TWRP and I was able to flash everything.

[Q] how to install custom rom over another custom rom on i9500

Hv been using Arrow rom 8.0. Works fine but wanted to upgrade to Arrow rom 9.0 which is based on the rom for India.
The phone is rooted and custom recovery installed(don't know much about the way to use it). Downloaded the rom and went into recovery mode. Ok'd the wipe data/factory reset. Ok'd wipe cache. Ok'd the option of upgrade from external storage and the phone went to the manual mode with csc as inu and asking for the filename. Didn't know what to do so yanked the battery and rebooted. The booted to Arrow rom 8.0 with all data gone.
One more thing I noticed that in recovery mode I had to use a magnifying glass to read the options. Also there was no option to choose the external storage ie the sd card where I download or copy the roms it only shows phone storage.
Would appreciate the help received in pointing me to the right direction.
These are really basic questions. I'm supprised you managed to flash a rom in the first place.
Full wipe in recovery, if you still could boot after wiping, like in your case, then you didn't wipe correctly. Your phone shouldn't be able to boot anymore after the wiping (because there is no more rom installed).
Then flash the rom. If there is no option for external storage (i think this is highly unlikely), then just copy it to your internal sd card and flash from there.
Are you really sure you have a custom recovery? Because the way you are descriping it, it sounds more like the stock recovery.

Thanks for the advice. Checked using recovery tool and it says current firmware: stock.
How do I make a full wipe. And also what about the manual mode I get in the recovery mode.
Can mobile odin be used for flashing.
Again, these are really basic questions. You should read the forum more, my guess is you have a I9500, so start reading in that section. Read the parts about rooting, flashing a custom recovery and flashing.
All the information you need is there. I can tell you the exact steps you need to take, but figuring it out for yourself will save you lots of trouble in the furture if anything goes wrong.
I have no idea what manual mode is, so my guess is that you don't have a custom recovery installed. What is the name of the recovery? Or doesn't it display any name? You shouldn't be needing Mobile Odin, maybe only for rooting or flashing a custom recovery, but not for flashing the rom.

Had read the forum before flashing the rom. Rooted my phone and had installed CWM via Odin and confirmed it in the recovery mode. And only after this flashed the Arrow Rom and used it for couple of months.
Don't know what happened to CWM it wasn't there this time in recovery mode, it showed Android System Recovery and not CWM.
Anyway have flashed CWM again along with Crash Rom 11.
Thanks again bro.

Help change stock recovery / revert to stock recovery (CWM based recovery) [SOLVED]

Hello friends,
I have rooted Galaxy i9505 international. Installed CWM based recovery 6.0.3.2(0611), and flashed last stable CM (cm-10.2.1-jfltexx).
Boot time have become longer (way longer) since installing CWM based recovery.
Couldn't find a decent post about how to:
1) Revert back to stock recovery.
or
2) Change the CWM based recovery to official CWM.
Anyone know how to do either?
Or maybe had the same problem with CWM based recovery?

Actually after all those attempts I can't really remember how long did it take to boot before installing CWM..

I prefer to flash the original CWM.
How can I flash it on top of the CWM based recovery?
Files there are img files.
Look in xda development section you will find it zip format or i think you can download a zip file of another recovery and the replace the recovery within the zip file with the one you want to flash.
If you want to flash it in .img format you can do that with heimdall but you will need the pit file of 19505 too.

Could not find any ZIP of the official Clockworkmod Recovery.
Is there any other way to install it?
Or better yet, a way to revert to stock recovery (from there I can install as in the beginning)?
Btw, is it ok to just replace recovery? Or should I "uninstall" my old recovery before installing the new one?

GT-I9505 Constantly restarting

Hi all
Got an I9505 on O2 and since lollipop update it restarted a few times by itself. Now it keeps going into a loop where it will restart and the home screen loads, you can use it for about 20-30 seconds and it will reboot again!
Initially when I researched I though it was an app problem but couldn't find the culprit. Then I took it into the Samsung repair centre and they said it needed a clean flash by them. This didn't work and they fitted a new mother board and this still hasn't worked.
I can say that it has twice happened when the Wifi hasn't been working properly so I have turned it off but other than that I have no idea!
Also I have tried rebooting into safe mode but it still does it, aaarrrggghhhh!!!
Any ideas where I can go from here please?
P
Return to kitkat if you can. Otherwise use a custom rom. These would be my suggestions. Since Samsung's repair couldn't fix it, warranty should not be a problem anymore.
Thanks, I am more than willing to try a Custom ROM. Any recommendations? And how easy is it as never done before!

It's fairly easy. Depending on what S4 model you have. Some models have a locked bootloader and that makes the whole thing trickier.
This is what I did:
1) Root with CF-Auto-Root. Thread here.
2) Backup all my apps.
3) Install a custom recovery (TWRP). Download and instructions here.
4) Flash custom rom. Most roms have their own instructions.
You can skip 1 and 2 if you don't want to backup.
Installing a custom recovery can be done using Odin. I recommend TWRP since it's the only one I've used.
Lollipop GPE rom. I've used this rom and didn't have any issues. CM12 seems a bit faster, but the GPE was more stable and bug-free.
Thanks I tried to install the CM12 before you posted using the instructions there but it failed, I assume that it needs to be rooted.

You need a custom recovery to install any rom. It doesn't matter if it's rooted or not.
Get a custom recovery. Get all the necessary zip files (rom, gapps, etc). Place all the zip files on the external sd card. Boot into the custom recovery. Wipe /data, /cache and /dalvik-cache.
Go to Install (if on TWRP), go to the location where you saved the downloaded rom zip and select it. The swipe the slider to begin flashing. Afterwards flash the gapps zip. Reboot.
Also, don't use the recovery posted in the CM12 thread. It was specially made by the dev and will convert your file system to f2fs. What it basically means is that it will wipe your internal storage completely.

You don't have a custom recovery installed. That is probably the stock recovery. You can't flash a rom using the stock recovery.
You absolutely need a custom recovery if you want to flash a custom rom.
Custom recoveries are: TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project), CWM (ClockworkMod Recovery) and PhilZ Touch Recovery. Either one should work. But you necessarily need one.

Follow the link I gave you. They have several instrunctions on how to install TWRP. You can install TWRP with Odin too.
Here, There are 3 ways to install. Use Odin. It doesn't require root and should be the easier one. Just UNTICK auto-reboot in Odin before flashing. Once it's done, turn the phone off and use the key combo to get into TWRP recovery.

I guess that's the CM12 logo. First boot after flashing always takes some time because the rom is configuring stuff.
If you still don't get into android, turn off the device and turn it on again. If you've done everything correctly there is no reason why it shouldn't boot.

No problem. You could try a different build. Or you could try a CM12 based rom. SaberMod worked fine for me. And it's the closest to the actual CM12 you can get.

SaberMod is a rom. SaberMod CM12.1.
They are very similar. The difference is how they tackle optimizations.
Yes, you will have to flash it. But you can also stick with normal CM12 if you don't have any issues.
The google search box from the home screen or the recents?
You can change the launcher to get rid of it from the home screen.
To remove it from the recents there is an option somewhere in the settings.
