The comparison camera: My 4 year-old Canon Ixus 300
This is how far behind the pace the Universal's camera is...
Lets be honest though, the universal isnt really marketed for having a great camera. Its good for taking quite snapshots, but if your are that serious about taking pictures, get a nokia N90 or a digital camera. Its not really the camera what is bad, its just the really bad, plastic lens what is.
Can your 4 year old Ixus make phone calls, browse the web, check your emails, listen to music, watch movies?!?!
I was going to post comparisons about how far behind my alienware laptop my Universal is when playing Halflife, but I couldn't get it to run on my Universal
lol - OK, don't take this out of context please.
Someone in another thread was curious about the camera's abilities,
so I posted these pics as an illustration, but they screwed up the other
thread so I moved them to a new one. (See? They're even screwing
up this one too! ) Maybe the pics are useful for people who are
curious about the Universal's camera.
The camera quality isn't the reason why someone would buy the
Universal (understatement of the year!), but people will be interested
to know just how good/bad it is. This thread is an objective
demonstration just for them. 8)
I carry a nice 3.2 MPx Casio Exilim S100 - small, loads of useful features and otherwise fills the camera niche. The Exec replaced my P900 + x50v setup. I now use the x50v for development testing.
No probs for me using the universal for photos!!
Sorry guys. I'm quite happy with my jasjar for photos (considering it ain't a dedicated digitl camera!!)
I'm sure that HTC could really put a better camera on the Universal and in all WM devices; the problem is that they don't care ....they have so much space that they can put the K750 i sonyericsson camera module
If you have a look at the first comparison shots at the top of the kitchen, the Universal shot is clearer than the canon shot, look at the clock on the stove, the universal shot is clearer, you can hardly read the canon pic.

woah!!!!!! this is realllllllyyyy gooooddd!!!!
I guess its built to handle outdoors really well!
@seal
the point is, they are taken at different resolutions....what you need to see in the comparison is, the color quality and richness....!

Yes you are right there.....

No no no!
Two of the pictures (the small ones) are taken at the same resolution
so that we can directly compare them! The Canon shot is a thumbnail.
Click on it to get the 640x480 version to match the 640x480 Universal
pic.

i think you just added the 640x480 version recently by editing your post didnt you??
we just had the 1280pic from the universal, and the 640pic from your canon....of course....until you edited it unless....there was a problem with my browser!
Cheers!

If thats the case, then its alright. I dont like people dissin the device cos it doesn't take great pictures. No device on the market does what the jasjar can do, n i dare someone to argue with me on that
Sorry if we hijacked your thread.
can somebody post more pictures??? especially those taken with bad lighting conditions....
a couple pics in pitch dark, with the flash turned on...along with night mode on would be great too!
@universal
Noone would argue with you for sure you sure love your device!!!

Mate you should see the quality of pictures from the SE K750i they are really fantastic. Also the K750's battery lasts my wife 7 days and it is on 24hrs a day. So no competition for the JJ/Exec but makes you think
Like universaldoc wrote there is no other device like the universal, some phones might have a better camera but can they log into your computer on the other side of the world and fully control it..... The answer is clearly NO....... What is being said here is the Universal, despite its little problem, is a Phone/PDA in one that does is all. We will have better in the future but at this present time there is no comparison to anything Ericsson can make and that goes for in the future with Ericsson.
@seal, I know what is being said but not everyone wants all the features of the Universal. For me I still to use my PSP for videos over my Exec and I prefer the music reproduction of my Nokia 9500 (OGG) and Palm LifeDrive (DRM) over the Exec; the Exec music reproduction is very bass light.
I think that the camera is pretty ok with right settings...
@jah,
I agree that the camera is better on the SE K750i, probably the best after the Sharp V203SH.
But i just feel that it is rather unfair to diss the Universal based on the camera. As i have said before, if camera is a criteria for considering the universal, then i am speechless.
Just to make myself clear, i would have purchased the universal even if it did NOT have a camera
I realize the phone only came out a couple of days ago, but me and probably a lot of other people on this forum would like to know the quality of the Athena's 3 Megapixel camera. Having said that , post pictures taken by it !

OK SupraSkylineSTI. I've done a few, but because most of them are personal family pics of my kids, I can only upload a few for now, but definitely more in the week.
Now bear in mind these are the default settings and all I have changed in the camera menu settings is 'half press' as opposed to the default 'Full Press', as full press requires you to have very steady hands. Also photos have not been altered in any way, just resized according to forum rules.
I actually have to admit, that these are the best photos by far that I have seen taken by a HTC designed PPC/PE. I'm sure with some settings tweaking, they can be much improved. Nokia or SE camphone it is not, not even comparable, but bloody good all the same. Colour reproduction is also very good and accurate for outdoor shots. All 3 photos were taken in Auto mode, so changing the setting to the appropriate one is sure to improve things a little.
Thanks for your contribution man !!!!
Can you upload one full-size photo of something, so we can truly see camera quality ?

Ill have to zip it up due to restrictions on the forum......hold tight..it's coming.
i want comparison quality of picture shot
Would you like some fries with that?
There are LOTS of reviews out there with camera samples.
Also, one guy actually posted a decent amount of pictures in a zip in a thread here earlier. Think it was called "shutter speed lag" or something... search for it.
In all the arguing about lag, screen and firmware issues I haven't seen any actual discussion on the Galaxy's camera. I have yet to compare it directly to the iPhone 4's camera, but I'm really impressed with this one coming from an iPhone 3GS.
I have been taking some sample shots over the last few days to see how it looks, most of them have been slightly processed with phone apps like photoshop mobile and vignette, but I feel every photo needs to be retouched and no camera takes perfect pictures on its own.
I'm not able to post full links yet, but copy and paste this on a different tab to see my samples.
yfrog.com/ea4801795350300f4ca828bjx
If you guys have taken cool shots with the Galaxy please share
You can see in this thread pics and videos taken with it

woops, didnt see the thread, ignore this one then
I think these may not have been discussed before and appear to have been taken with a Z:

Pixel peeping at 100%, sure they seem to not be that sharp from the noise reduction but I think they'll still do very good prints, maybe as big as A3. I'll probably try printing some when I get mine as a test.
Also, I think responsiveness of the software / speed of capture and control is more important than minor image quality issues.
Edit: I think it may still be a pre-production device. As it's listed on flickr as C6603...
Edit 11th Feb: Later on in this topic, hush66 kindly posted some links to new sample photos which are from a production device and seem a lot better than the ones in my post below.

Also these are new to me at least: http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]N05/sets/72157632729147253/
Edit: Having browsed these images a little bit more, I feel the Z image quality may be a bit disappointing.
This combined with a review mentioning there not being a big difference between 720p and 1080p on the display and the seemingly average battery life as a result, has made me start to consider whether to cancel my pre-order.
First batch looks good to me. Alot different to the second album though... wether the 2nd guy has wobbly hands or just typed the wrong device i have no idea. But from what samples i have seen the pictures usually are very good, and as people say Sony are good in the camera department
Looking good. Maybe it's nothing revolutionary, but low light photos are amazing.
I'm very happy with what I'm seeing in the first batch and those night/low light shots. It is only a phone camera after all so it's unrealistic to expect the world out of it.
Pretty good for a phone. Phone Photos will never be great, even with a big sensor like the nokia, simply because the lens will never be great.
Personally I rather have a thin phone and a separate camera like the rx100 than a heavy and large phone like the pure views.
Photo quality
I read two reviews that said the picture quality Xperia z is not all that. They said there was not a lot of progress in relation to phones like iPhone 5 or galaxy s3.
Very noisy and marketing ...
Companies have to stop fooling people ... cuz eventually lose credibility with the public.
Sony xperia z = Tefefone too thin to have a better camera to nokia 920 and nokia n8
13mp was only for marketing!
Sigh... You only signed up to write that?
I'd like to welcome to XDA:silly:

You said you read 2 reviews, that's fine and all. But what if both reviews said for example that the phone smelled like carrots (Just an example)
Would you have believed it?
Before concluding things it's best that you try out the phone for yourself.
And you may say/think that the pictures aren't all that, but qw all have our different opinions, some may find it enough for their needs, some don't. Some use a dedicated camera, some use their phone. Should I continue?

Companies have to stop fooling people... agreed, but look it from their point of view, in the end they are only doing it to survive in this world. So can we blame them? I'd say no.
Eventually everyone bought a product because some company said that product X was better then product Z from another company. It's for us to figure out what true and what's not. People in general have to look passed their nose and see the actual truth instead of being "misinformed".

Is that your conclusion that the telephone is too thin or did you copied that from a review(s)?
You named 2 other phones... well I'd say test it out and proof that to us.
And yes of course the 13mp is a marketing scheme, but some company has to be the first to announce these kind of things, in xx months I bet there will be more companies introducing a 13mp camera in their phones, will you also call it a marketing scheme then? Or won't you, because multiple companies have the "technology" (referring to the 13mp).
Now it's your turn:angel:

The Nokia pureview 808 is a class all its own. The pictures from it rival just about any point and shoot I've seen at least from 2 feet away or with tux limit of the Nokia zoom.
I was hoping the Z was going to put up a close fight but I'm skeptical at this point. There certainly is hype created by companies but on the case of the Nokia its all backed up. Hopefully Sony hasn't let us down.

Those photos are probably the best I have seen out of all of the reviews. Your photos seem to suffer much less of the compression issues I saw on the review photos. Could you attempt to take some lower light pictures? and possibly a few comparing HDR to non-HDR? Thanks.

Yes, I'm positive the photos were labelled correctly.
I agree the first (labelled no HDR) has better details in the shadows, very interesting.
I agree with people here the photo's that are shown before are not that flash, however the ones posted by hush66 seem to be better, although hard to know for sure because they don't seem to be full res.
I agree to comments here about phone camera being around marketing. HTC tried something around this with the HTC One, I gave the HTC marketing department a bollocking about this, they pulled this marketing off the site a few days later. They were claiming you couldn't tell the difference between photo's taken with a DSLR and HTC One, hahahaha. The sample pictures were 364x268 pixels in size. I challenged them to tell the difference between photos from my Old Nokia N70, Blackberry 8900 and HTC Desire at the same pixels.
The biggest benefit of a point and shoot over the camera of the phone are the optical zooms, image quality is the similar or better than a lot of point and shoots.

These are very good, thanks. I really like how it handles macro shots.
Damn, hush's photos are by far the best I've seen of everything posted from the Z so far. I just spend the past couple of hours sifting through random shots taken by the Z before finding this thread, so I'm very aware that the sharpness is quite a bit better in these pics.
Could it be there's a newer firmware update at play? Or are there still others out there taking photos with pre-production units? I know a lot of pics so far have come from websites that've recieved the Z, but what are the chances that Sony sent them pre-production phones vs. final retail units? It'd seem like a silly thing to do, but there's a real world difference between what they were able to do with the camera, and what hush was able to do.
