Device: SM-G901F (I believe the prime version of the s5 in UK, checked with an app I have 805 processor)
Firmware: 4.4.4 everything official, owned for less than 1 week.
I only want one thing by rooting: xPrivacy. That's all.
I want to keep my warranty fully intact and here's what I know:
Towelroot can root without tripping knox but I read something about it only working on June firmware etc. I'm not sure if it's compatible with my s5 either as there's not many mentions of my model number device.
Will installing xposed/xprivacy trip knox? What's is the easiest method of installing these?
Finally, I know that flashing trips knox, but if I wanted to fully unroot, wouldn't I have to flash a stock ROM? Is there a method of fully unrooting without tripping Knox?
Thank you.

1. You need CF Auto Root to root the phone, you can download it here http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/. Download and flash the right file with Odin 3.09.
This will trip KNOX though, Towelroot will not work for you as your kernel is too young and patched for the volnurability.
2. Installing the Xposed.apk framework and its modules will not trip KNOX.
3. Flashing official firmware with Odin will not trip KNOX.
4. Full unroot: Use Triangle Away to reset the system and status to official and unroot from the superSU app. Then flash a stock rom and after that factory reset in recovery.

Thanks for the clear info!
1. Is it definitely patched? It's because of my model right? Isn't there a way of rooting my model without tripping knox?
4. Is there a step by step tutorial of this somewhere, and will it trip knox? I was researching some ways if unrooting and came across something to do with unroot ing using supersu and then flashing stock with Odin. Is that any different?
Many thanks!

1. Yup Towelroot only works on firmwares till ANE2, yours is build after that date
2. Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1980683 and here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1372414 for more info about CF Auto Root and using Odin.
In order to root the phone KNOXwill be tripped, its inevitable.
That's a real shame. Really wanted xprivacy after coming from an iphone since I was used to having better privacy on there. Guess I'll have to wait in the hopes that something is released

Hi,
I would like to know if there is any known way at the moment to get a rooted kitkat 4.4.2 firmware without tripping knox. I'm momentarily running MKE 4.3, German csc I think. I'm aware of saferoot for this firmware, but I would like to know if there's something like it for official kitkat, or if it is possible to root my 4.3 and then upgrade via mobile odin and inject root via everroot everroot without tripping knox. If not I'll just update via OTA and root via another method but if it's possible I'd like to keep knox for now

No, uptil now there is no such method developed. Check on Kingo root website whether they ve updated to root 4.4.2 firmware.

Oké, Thanks anyway
I don't really trust kingoroot as I thought that it had spyware installed, just as vroot, but then I heard about saferoot and I I was hoping I could keep root via mobile odin, but too bad. I'll just just root via cf-root then

Does not trip the knox counter..but don't expect to use custom recoveries. It is a simple root only.

Thanks! I read about it in the featured articles but I wasn't sure it would work or not. I was just planning to use the root to clean the ROM up a bit to free up some system memory and RAM and make some apps system apps, better backups and fiddle a bit with my storage, and maybe using some modules, do you know if using Xposed trips knox?

Xposed doesn't... but I would be weary of modules that perform bootloader or deep system changes
Titanium Backup.. and use backup app and then remove/disable etc
Just be careful... if the knox counter is v important to you.

It's not that important to me, I just don't want to trip it if I don't have to, if I need to trip it for something I really want to do I don't have a problem with it , it's not like use knox thanks you very much

Actually KNOX is very important for warranty issues. If you dont have warranty then I wouldnt worry about it. If you DO have warranty then do not mess with KNOX-tripping root methods.
Just got a new S5 and I've been out of the scene for a while.
Can someone point me in the direction of some up to date info/guide? I've been scouring xda for 30 mins now and can't figure out the best way to get Recovery and Root.
Bonus question: I've read that using a rootkit irreversibly increases a counter from 0x0 to 0x1 whereas TowelRoot does not. Is this true?
check your kernel version first. if its date is lower than 3rd June then TowelRoot will not trigger KNOX. but if its later than 3rd June any method used to root will trigger KNOX to 0x1
Custom kernel and recovery are out of the question. They will trigger KNOX no matter whatever you do as of now.

Thursday May 8th. Does this mean I should go with TowelRoot? Or are you saying it doesn't matter as I intend to enable recovery anyway?

you can use towelroot, knox wont be tripped as the kernel version is less than 3rd june.
but if you flash custom recovery or kernel knox will get tripped as of now. And as you intend to enable recovery anyway, so it means you are willing to get knox tirpped hence you can use any way to root
I can confirm that towelroot will not trip knox on G900F.

Thanks for the clarification. So I'm now going to install TowelRoot, and then install TWRP from the play store. You're saying that it is only after I install TWRP that KNOX will get tripped? Even though TWRP is now official (in the play store)?
Have I got the order right?

Yup, all non stock stuff like custom recovery`s and kernels will trip KNOX to 0x1 permanantly if flashed with (Mobile) Odin.

Aaaah. That makes sense. I've just seen that in SuperSU I can disable KNOX. If I do that, install CM11 and reenable KNOX will it still show 0x1?
Would you also mind confirming that I've got the right idea about what comes next:
1. Install towelroot.
2. Install SuperSU.
3. Update SU binaries (disabling KNOX in the process).
4. Install TWRP from Playstore
5. Flash CM11
Do I need to back up my EFS partition first or will this be covered by restoring to Stock ROM (should I need to do so)?
Also this process means I don't even need Odin. Is this correct?!

Step 4 will always trip KNOX unfortunately. If you only root like with steps 1 to 3 on roms with kernels build before june 3rd KNOX will remain 0x0. You simply cannot flash custom recovery`s without tripping KNOX (it will remain active and detect security breaches).

Look here for a KNOX explanation (different levels) http://omegadroid.co/wanted-knox-void-warranty-0x1/. You can root your decice with TR and disable KNOX notifications showing up and still keep warranty. Flashing custom recovery`s will trip KNOX.
Warranty is also region dependent, for instance rooting a device in the EU http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998801 doesn`t void warranty by law. Look how rooting is handled in your region.

Thanks this is a great link. Very helpful. I have subsequently 'disabled' KNOX through SuperSU even though I'm doubtful this will really do anything with regard to my warranty. I'm already set on flashing a custom ROM so flashing TWRP is a must for me.
P.S. I've only just realised CM11 isn't available for the S5. Can you recommend any custom ROMS other than Omega and Alliance? What do you use?
Hi,

If you want to flash custom recovery`s or custom roms KNOX will be tripped unfortunately
So, to sum up, if you want to root without tripping KNOX, you need to stay stock and not even install custom recovery. if you plan to install custom recovery, no need to go though the effort of not tripping KNOX and just use CF-Auto root.
Towel root should root pre June 6th builds of S5 4.4.2 firmware, without incrementing Knox.
Installing any custom kernel or recovery or using CF autoroot will increment the Knox counter. Less commonly, some failed firmware writes, corrupted partitions, soft bricks or kernel crashes may also increment the counter.
.
I know how to root S5 w/o tripping knox but it requires to install modded roms. Is there a way just to root an maintain stock rom(unmodded) while having knox 0x0? lets say I am using UK BOD3

really? please send a link to some tutorial!
There is a way.
You need a specific kernel, but first you must be on a stock KitKat rom for your device.
Then you can root your phone with towelroot app.
Then you can use either mobile Odin or flashfire and update your stock rom to lollipop (sammobile again) with the option of keeping root.
Congratulations you should have a rooted lollipop device and not have tripped Knox.

Im using rooted android 5 with knox 0x0
first of all backup your files
downgrade your device to 4.4.2 (Some devices: NE2 and some devices: NF6) flash it with odin and wipe data/cache from recovery
root it with towelroot, install supersu from google play store and update binary
install flashfire to your device https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BySFnd9JR36VTDRRZDdndU9KMTg&authuser=0
download android 5 for your device from sammobile and copy it to your device
open flashfire grant root access, tap + and select firmware then select your android 5 firmware
check all boxes (You can't check Bootloader partitions) and press √ from top right and select No from new window
After that dont touch anything and tap flash botton from bot left side
and enjoy your rooted lollipop knox 0x0 rom
What firmware was your LP? The problem ist CFROOT seems not to work since BOD3. Flashing custom recoveries was reported as impossible either....
You wasn't able to download flashfire because it was private now i changed it
Im using BOC2

I read about root, but can't find infos about knox.
Just use cf auto root and odex, that's it ?
KNOX is Samsungs way of voiding your warranty, when their hardware is at fault, but you have flashed something custom
0x0 = valid
0x1 = void
Soon as you flash anything custom, 0x1 - and it's irreversible
If you don't care, root using CF Auto Root and ODIN
Or TWRP 2.8.7.0 & ODIN, then SuperSU zip from TWRP recovery
Like I say, everything is posted thousands of times over, if you'd checked the thread below this one, you'd have known what KNOX was

Flashing a stock Samsung ROM will not trip KNOX, so you're safe to flash any stock ROM without worrying about KNOX, KNOX is only tripped by flashing custom stuff not signed by Samsung
But to upgrade to Lollipop without losing root or tripping KNOX, you have to use Flashfire after running Towelroot on KK, otherwise you'll lose root, and then have no other options than flashing back to KK or tripping KNOX by using CF Auto Root
