My wifi toggle is off. In settings, wifi shows off. When I view battery usage and the graph, wifi shows (almost) always on. The only time it shows off in this graph is when I turn airplane mode on.
I've tried rebooting, toggling wifi, airplane mode, data....but to no avail. Is it really on?

Not sure where it is but I think there is an option to use WiFi in assisting Location services. Make sure that is NOT enabled. Although I would have thought that turning WiFi off should disable this but you never know!
I checked "Settings", "Location", "Mode" and changed to "GPS Only". No change....still constant bar. I'm stumped on this one.

Go into Wifi settings, click the three button menu, and go to advanced settings. In that screen is the "Always allow scanning" option ticked? If so, un-tick it.

Ahhhhah! Thank you kindly! That is absolutely the answer. Convoluted as it may be, I'm glad to now know.
wifi settings disabled = not really. Location trumps all. I even had "Location" settings disabled.

Does anyone know how to disable this feature? Every time my screen goes blank, and I turn it back on, I have this icon in the top left hand corner with a red x through it saying "turn wifi off". I want my wifi to come back on when I unlock the device, but I forced to turn it off then back on. Extremely annoying...
I may be wrong but check in the settings/applications/ manage applications and you can delete it from there. I think its called wifi status.

Just go into wifi settings and pres menu and go into advanced and set the sleep policy to "never". It saves a lot of battery. That way it doesn't disconnect when the screen goes off, nd then you'll only see it when you really have no wifi

You want your Wi-Fi connection to be available when you unlock your screen. From your Home screen:
Hit the Menu button & then go to Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Wi-Fi settings
Hit the Menu button (again) and select Advanced
Set the Wi-Fi sleep policy to Never
That stops the Wi-Fi radio from sleeping when the screen is turned off. This will likely solve your issue.
tried that. still there looking me in the face mocking me.... lol
What kernel are you using? Apparently this is an issue with Xtreme kernel.
may very well be. It was happening in 1.1, and now I have 1.2 (xtreme kernel) on syndicate rom.

You can remove wifi status using these steps. I do it every flash.

This is a known bug with xtreme kernel. The wifi goes to sleep with the screen off even with it set to never. Semi sporadic, and worse on 1.0.2 than 1.0.1 in my experience.
Hi,
when I am downloading a large file, my screen turns off after some time when I do nothing. So far so good. But when I resume to my Android I must see that the Wifi-connection was turned off, too - I think because of battery power saving.
But it was turned off during my file download, so I have to download it again and I have to keep my screen not to turn off by tapping on it periodically. That's what is annyoing me.
I recognized that the connection is not deactivated directly after the screen was turned off. It lasts some time (minutes?) then the wifi connection is turned off, too.
Is there a way to prevent the deacitivation of the wifi connection when the screen is turned off?
Thanks for your answers.
Yes,
Goto settings>wireless connections>wifi adjustments
There you should find an option for WiFi selection politics. Just choose not to never disconnect.
Cheers
Hmm, it is already set to "Never disconnect".
I think this setting is only useful when you want to switch automatically between mobile data (GPRS/UTMS) and WiFi.

No. That happens whether you want it or not if you have a wifi access.
Or I have a couple of busted phones at home that totally ignore this setting.
Tell your screen to never shut off, then change back.
My n7 turns off wifi when I leave my house and doesn't turn back on when I get to work. Every morning when I get to work, I have to manually turn it back on. Is there a way to prevent the wifi from turning off so it automatically connects to my work network when I arrive?
BTW, I do have the "keep wifi on during sleep" checked.
Thanks
Me too. Every time it sleeps or the screen turns off, I have to switch it of then on for it to connect.
I have that always connect setting checked too. I also installed a Wi-Fi locker that's supposd to help but doesn't. There is an option called 'connect when the screen turns on - but you have to pay/upgrade. I'm tempted to pay but I think there should be a local fix/workaround.

Do you use Tasker or a Smart Actions app that is supposed to turn it off when you leave your home? Any Battery Saver options set?

I have an app called Battery Mix which just provides information about the battery and charge times, but it does not do anything with processes or battery/power management (so it claims). The device has had this issue since I got it out of the box.
I think the OP and #2 are having different issues. In any event...
Open the advanced Wifi settings by pressing the menu button, then Settings, Wireless & networks, Wi-Fi settings, and tapping the menu button again. You'll have a choice to either Scan, or go Advanced -- go Advanced.
Tap the Wi-Fi sleep policy entry, and you'll get a pop up dialog with the choices you see in the picture above. Choose Never.
It seems that every time I plug my s4 in, it will turn on Wifi. Then when I turn Wifi off the phone tells me "unfortunately smcc service had stopped working". Is anyone else having this issue?

I'm having a similar issue where it turns itself back on when it's turned off. This is happening even when it is not plugged in though I'm not seeing any errors when turning it off.
It is the Smart Mode located in Settings under Wifi.

That may be it. I just turned it off. We'll see what happens. Thanks!!!!!!!

Ahhh! My brain fart has been sprayed with Lysol..! Thanks Crawrj!
If that doesn't work check for a setting called "Connection Optimizer." I haven't gotten my S4 yet but on other Sprint phones it is Settings > Mobile Data > Automatic Connections > Uncheck "Connection Optimizer"
It's supposed to intelligently determine when to turn wifi and 4g on and off. Connecting to wifi will save battery over mobile data so it is best to connect to it, that's probably why they have connection optimizer on phones.

THANK YOU! After reading the description this does appear to be the culprit. And the longer you stay in one place(work) the more aggressive it seems to get.

Ya it took me a min to figure it out. It's designed to read your location and connect to wifi in areas your always connected to wifi. But if you wish to shut it go to too:
Settings > Wi-Fi > Smart Mode > turn off.

Thanks for this. I thought I was going crazy for a minute with wifi turning itself on.

Me too. Thanks so much for this. It was driving me mad. Up next: preventing it from disconnecting because it feels the wifi is too slow. UGH. Walking around my building there are good spots and bad spots. If I sit in a bad spot too long I am disconnected with no hope for auto reconnecting. Maddening.

Great info thanks.
Juice Defender vs. Smart Mode
I use the WiFi location-based trigger in Juice Defender instead of Smart Mode.
As I understand it, while Smart Mode tries to turn on WiFi for ALL of your common locations, JD can do this on a location by location basis. So, I don't like to be connected to WiFi at work, but I *do* at home. JD allows for this.
Sound right?
Thanks,
Eph
I have Smart Mode off - but Wifi still seems to come on at least once a day?
What else could be triggering this?

Not to sure. Happens to me once in awhile too. I'll go to turn on Hotspot and it says it needs to turn wifi off when I have Smart mode off. [emoji85] [emoji86] [emoji87]
Why is my WiFi always on? Relevant screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/8ZI49P6.png
WiFi is manually toggled off.
WiFi scanning in Settings > Location > Advanced is turned off
I get that there are wake issues in my screenshot, but that's more likely to deal with Facebook than anything. Still doesn't explain why WiFi is always on.
Edit 31-JAN-2016: So I tried the following in my testing
Charge phone to 100%
Turn Off WiFi
Check battery screen, phone seems to show WiFi on still
Reboot
Notice that WiFi is off on the battery screen.
However maybe a minute later, it seems to "turn back on" (SEE SCREENSHOT)
Have you checked your Location scanning settings as well?
Is Wi-Fi scanning turned off there too?

I have the same problem too.
If you go into the dialer and try searching on a company does it prompt to turn on wifi scanning?
Try rebooting
Same problem here.... Reboot doesn't help.

Do you guys by any chance have any of these apps installed? I'm suspecting it has something to do with these.
My testing so far is as follows:
Turn off Wifi
See that WiFi is still on in Battery Screen
Greenify the list of apps above
See that WiFI is still on in battery screen
Reboot
WiFi no longer shows as on
I'm going to do further testing to see. This is inconclusive so far.
