[Q] Galaxy S4 keeps rebooting and having some strange issues - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Galaxy S4 (i9505) and it reboots randomly at random intervals. I had a custom ROM before (Cyanogenmod 4.4.4) and all have worked flawlessly and then suddently, one day, it have begun to have 'super-mega-slowdowns', Force-closes with random aplications. I have flashed the Stock Samsung ROM with Original Kernel and then it worked for half-a-day, after this it has begun to shut off by itself and refused to turn on anymore (Keeping on Model-Screen [Where's te kernel is being initialized] and then shutting off). With all these issues, I have flashed it again and now it works partially good. I can use it normal, but it reboots every ~30 minutes. I can be gaming, it reboots. It can be in my pocket, it reboots. All the time. Recently my 'Nova Launcher' has corrupted by itself and begun to Force-Close. I had to reinstall him. The battery also get down very fast.
What can this be? It's very annoying and I don't have any money to buy a new phone.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: The issues have begun minutes after "smashing" my phone various times on the bed. (Reason for curious guys: My gf breaked up with me....via whatsapp. And then I was a bit angry of this.) My bed is not solid as stone, so I don't think it can be this. The phone is in 'perfect' optical state. No cracked screen or similar.

No, my battery is fine. It's all 'perfectly' fine (optically).

Double flash the stock rom, uncheck auto reboot and turn on after 30seconds.
And then data wipe
If this does not work..
Flash latest CM build for your phone

I have made this twice, trice and nothing helped.
I think my phone is dying.
EDIT: I have made the emmc brickbug check and it have passed.
What it could be? (While writing this, the phone just rebooted itself AGAIN)

Anyone has a solution?

Random Power Offs and Reboots?

My phone decides to reboot and or power off randomly and for no apparent reason. It's just sitting on my desk. Anyone else experience this issue?
Guess i'll try a reflash if this continues.
yep
+1
Not very often but very annoying if you use your phone as alarm clock.
I honestly haven't experienced either with my SGS. I can sympathise though as my Milestone used to do both way too often (hence swapping for the SGS).
It hasn't happened to me.. It might be running a software or hardware watchdog to reboot automatically when the system panics. Ensure you are using a stock rom, otherwise, it may even be faulty hardware
Would happen several times a day on my Motorola Milestone so I sent it back and got the SGS. Totally rock solid. Only time it reboots is when I want it to. Maybe you have a rogue app?
you guys have any changes to the CPU speed whatsoever, task killers and all? i once used SetCPU and it sort of sent me into a random spree of reboots and such.
i remember rebooting, scanning 10gb of media, auto-reboot... repeat 4 times. lol.
Well it hasnt happened since yesterday. I will flash to froyo today just in case it was software related

did you see the topic on the DEV forum about Resetting the battery status?
seems like the phone (not the battery) keeps a wrong battery status if you flashed it a few times
so even when you still have battery, the phone "thinks" it rans out of juice and it does that thing you mentioned

Link would be helpful, because I can't find that topic.
WOW, old thread that got dug up, for me it was just a software issue. I flashed many roms since and haven't had it happen again. I never reset my battery stats but I think clockwork mod recovery has an option to do that so most of the custom roms make that easy.
I also had random reboots and power-offs, on average once every 2 weeks, running on stock-firmware JF3. Problems did not go away when I manually upgraded to JM2. Problems stopped when I upgraded to Froyo...

Hi, im currently using the galaxy sy i9500, and it was great for a first few days. Then started around 3 days ago, BAtrery started draining very fast, and my phone would randomly heats up, i can feel it from my pocket. And my bettery would go from 70% to like 50% in and hour without doing anything with it. i Disabled all the features, air view, smart scorll etc etc. I even enable the power saver mode which did not help at all. Anyone have an idea on whats going on? (see pics)
You are not the only one experiencing such problems.
1st of all make sure you have updated to latest software version. Then try to disable from the app manager: Samsung push, samsung apps along with google music play service (media has been draining your battery the most)
Are you also experiencing lag and difficult camera access?
If none of those worked maybe try to do a factory data reset or try flashing a stock firmware via ODIN.

[Q] Please help :( i9505 Constant random reboot issues..

Hey guys..
I've owned all the Samsung Galaxy phones from the S+ right up to the S4 and I've flashed firmwares over all of them with generally no problems at all.
But lately I have a constant issue that has been plaguing my Galaxy S 4 (i9505) phone since I flashed the 4.3 i9505G (GE Edition) ROM over my phone.. (have since moved to OMEGA v12)
The phone just randomly reboots whenever it seems to feel like it.
It could be whilst taking a picture, it could be whilst using google maps, it could be whilst installing an app from the app store or just scrolling across the screen. It's basically rebooted through anything and everything and I've tried pinning it down to something but every time I think that I've got it sorted out. It crashes again whilst doing something else.
1 thing however has got me stumped. The phone has NEVER crashed whilst plugged in. If I keep the phone plugged in, it's never ever just rebooted on its own for me. Which got me thinking that it could be a faulty battery or some sort of voltage issue.
Coming from the 4.3 GE Edition ROM there are other people experiencing random reboots. But now I've just flashed over OMEGA v12 and right after flashing (I did a full wipe of course first) the phone rebooted whilst typing in my Wifi access key. After the reboot I was able to set my phone up and I did a reboot myself, then I went to the app store to add an account and the phone crashed AGAIN.
I'm totally over this issue with my phone. I paid a small fortune for it and I cannot rely on it at all. So I absolutely need it to work. I've had issues on 4.3 GE getting Mobile Data to work. I've had issues with it crashing and I'm just done with all of this.
Do you think that my phone is already broken? (It's barely 3 months old) Do I need to get it replaced under warranty? Can I even get it replaced under warranty, is there a way to even get my warranty back or reset the flash counter etc?
I'm just so confused guys I thought maybe it was my battery, and that my battery was faulty because I had battery percentages dropping and jumping around like mad. For example 15% battery left would actually have the phone turn off... and reboot at 0%. Then the light wouldn't go green for 'Fully charged' and the phone would sit on 99% or 100% but still not say 'charged'. In addition I could swear I had lost more than 10% of my charge in the blink of an eye etc.
I just bought 2 new batteries but they will take a week to get here.. and if the phone is still rebooting (and it isn't a voltage/cut out issue with the battery) then should I assume it's a hardware issue and that the phone needs replacing? Or could it just be a bad flash or something? The phone has at least a 2 year warranty. I don't want to replace it after just 3 months when I haven't even so much as dropped it once.
My recovery is PhilZ 5 Touch 6.0.4.0
I always check MD5 sums before flashing and do a full wipe:
- Wipe Data/Factory Reset
- Clean to Install a New ROM
- Yes
- Then Flash the new .zip file etc.
What on earth could be wrong with my phone?
I'll happily provide any more information, as I honestly cannot handle this happening and I have no idea what my problem is...
Thanks incredibly much for any help at all, what-so-ever.

I can only give you advice on some of the smaller issues that you mentioned. I haven't had a problem with reboots at all (i've flashed all manners of ROMs too, including the GE), so I'm guessing it is hardware related. You should get it replaced (if it still is messing up with the new batteries).
As for warranty, yes you can claim it back on warranty. To be doubly safe, restore it to stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265477
Use Triangle Away: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114
Also FYI, rooting does not void warranty: http://matija.suklje.name/rooting-and-flashing-your-device-does-not-void-the-warranty-in-eu (assuming you are in the EU, not sure about other countries) (gosh i've posted this a lot today).
Thanks a lot buddy I am in the EU definitely and the phone is purchased from the EU. I am actually about to flash it right back to stock now to see if it stops the rebooting issue. I will just have to live without custom roms for awhile and such. If it still keeps crashing I will wait for the new batteries. If it still keeps crashing again after I get those. I guess all that is left to do is render myself without a phone for a week or two and have it repaired...
I wouldn't worry mate it sounds to me like a definite battery issue

Hi leijonasisu,
I've stumbled across your post after having experienced more or less the same issues as you. After trying many custom ROMs in the last few weeks, the phone has barely been useable for more than a few minutes until it randomly reboots. At which time, I must start over with the whole flashing process. My question is, did getting a new battery resolve your issue? Or did you just trade the device back in?
many thanks

Looks like it's better to restore to Samsung stock firmware first then start again from there,
But this will upgrade the the Knox bootloader also.
Stock firmware can be downloaded here, www.sammobile.com/firmwares
I fixed this ages ago. It was a battery issue, I'd bit my bottom dollar that it would be a battery issue for anyone else too, I've read a lot of stuff online about people who have gotten bad batteries with theirs. Swapped to 2 third-party and apparently larger batteries and never had an issue and never looked back.
Sorry for not replying back much sooner but I forgot about the thread.
Try another battery and if within a day or two you get no reboots then toss the bad battery and enjoy your phone! The thing is the battery (due to voltage issues) can make it look like it's the OSes fault when in actual fact it's just a faulty battery and voltage issues.
same problem here.. s4 randomly reboot..
I got the same problem.
The phone reboots every few minutes on me when i want to take it out of standby.
Sometimes it works for a few hours and sometimes it just reboots itself every few minutes or it reboots when i want to do something.
So ur all saying that a new battery could solve my problems ??

Hi, the OLD problem WAS caused by the faulty batteries batch (easy to recognize - the battery serial no was beginning with BD code).
Now, more frequently it is resulting from KNOX related issues.

hi thx for the answer.
Could infact be knox issue as i am now back on stock rom without root or anything and im not having any issues now.
But i would like to have a custom rom and root again .
So how would i go from here to there without having random crashes / reboots on custom rom ?

Only one option then: read the ROM-specific threads, loo for feedback posts. If ROM would cause random reboots, you can be certain that it will be written there.

Interesting will have to give this a go, also the battery option.
For months I was running on Lollipop custom ROM, the developer did an upgrade and then the SIM card removed error started. I went back to the old version was keep getting the SIM Card removed error. A few days ago went back to Original ROM for NZ 4.4.2 and I still get the SIM Card error and now the phone just reboots randomly.

N9005 self restarted

I don't know what is wrong with my Note3 N9005 it restarted by itself without any reason. It happened twice in this week already. I have been using it since the beginning of March bought it brand new on ebay.
The current FW is 4.42. I am suspected the cause is the apps I dowloaded but just don't know which one. Does any one have any ideas?

Hi.
I had same problem - even 2-3 restarts per day. In my case, someone of these apps caused problem (i installed them every time I wipe phone or install firmware, doesn't matter custom or stock).
1. Timely
2. Facebook
3. Facebook Messenger
4. Mx player
5. Plantronics hub
6. Cyberon Voice Commander Pl
Since few days I'm on stock XUENC2 ETL firmware, and I only upgraded stock apps and istalled shazam. In next few days i try to install Cyberon.
I think mx player could be the culprit. I say this because I have 3 different players on my phone. Every now and again when I use them my phone goes into spasm!
It stops paying anything, I lose all sounds then gradually I lose the ability to use my phone until I restart it.
I've had it Sent to Samsung but it returned with same problem.
I now only use one player and as yet it's not done it since. .

Uninstall all apps you installed just before it started? And then re-add them one by one until it starts rebooting again. Then you'll know which.

I am gonna try it. My phone restarted again today and it was sitting inside my belt case I heard the restarting sound, So it was self restarted even it was not in use, wow!
My previous phone was a China made ZOPO ZP990 before that was OPPO Find 5 both didn't do self restart like this and both are cheaper than Note 3 but the Note 3's been giving me the self restarting, lagging even hangs like a computer a few times. I think I should email Samsung and see what they say. Thank you for your idea tho.

I have many posts about this device rebooting randomly and freezing. I believe the problem is the RAM. You see, I don't suffer from this problem anymore, not by unchecking this and removing that or by factory resetting but because I have my phone set to "noop" and "performance" [300-2265] in SetCPU. I did this so that the RAM doesn't really get a chance to "keep" a process running for too long. It forces the phone to do what is has to immediately and with all the necessary processing power is can muster.
Battery life? I get 20+ hours comfortably unless the screen brightness is set too high, which is a "duh" in my opinion.
If you do a search for "freezing" or "random reboots" you will see that you aren' alone.
Sorry for writing it another time, but from my experience, this and other topics with freeze and restart problem, are hard to find.
After few months of crashing, and restarting, I send my Note to service center on warranty with knox 0x1. They changed mainboard. Currently testing, but it seems to be ok right now.
Freeze and rebots, restarts of Note 3 have to be HARDWARE FAILURE
I tired everything, diffrent roms, setcpu settings, with no success.

[Q] Galaxy S4 Constantly Restarts

Bit of an annoying problem, my Samsung Galaxy S4 i9505 (Rooted) constantly restarts at random now and again, and it can be very frustrating.
Also, I have the app 'App Master', which when the phone is restarted it shows the boot up time. When my phone randomly restarts, the boot up time could literally say it took hours (It's went as high as 40 hours... not sure if this is relevant or will help but yea...)
Also I get logged out of everything (facebook, twitter...) whenever my phone restarts which is very annoying.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

See if the same happens in download mode too.
If yes..you have a stuck power button.
If no, have you removed all the knox related apps? they cause this too. Deknox your phone.
If still persists, data wipe or flash stock rom..disable knox first via recovery..then proceed with normal rooting..

Yeah. Knox is the culprit then.
Check the i9505 rooting methods and if any deknox script is there.
Or simply if you are rooted..install the "system app uninstaller" app from the play store..(a red recycle bin logo app) and delete all knox content.
Bdw you wont be able to use knox anyway if you have a knox trigger

Very true, I think it's unusable anyway being triggered during tampering
I've removed everything related to knox so hopefully that fixes it
Thanks for the help

I´m having the same restart issue with stock and with custom firmwares (cyanogen / dirty unicorns), I flashed a custom firmware trying to fix it but nothing. it all started a week or so after I replaced the charging port flex. now my phone wont charge above 80 when on and if off it constantly restart until bellow 80%. it also freezes when charging and the screen is off (doesn´t wake up without restarting). can anyone help me with this.. i´m desperate.

Screen not being usable is the issue of the charger. Try changing the data cable.
Restarting issue could've been linked to a partial stuck power button or maybe because of an improper way of flashing or improper way of flashing kernels
Bdw did you change it or get it changed.?
@AntaresOne : Another hardware issue bro. Help him

I change it. I use different data cables and is always the same, I switch batteries with my wife's s4 and is the same problem.. One thing that I noticed last night is that the indicator led stays on (blue) even after I power off the device.
I'm starting to convince my self that it might be a hardware issue.

Ohh.
Now it is kinda certain that the way you changed or got the charging jack changed has a problem.
Try reassembling the charging port
This can be of great help.

Hello, it's a weird case.
Try to download the latest firmware available and update through Odin, then install a custom ROM (to fast de-Knox). Install CM11 M9 and leave original kernel, let your battery discharge until power off, connect to the charger and power on. Don't use it, see if charger more than 80% without reboots
