All:
I have a Sony Z3 D6603
I bit the bullet, unlocked my bootloader. Rooted and I immediately checked everything to see if there was anything missing/changed.
I can confirm that all Xperia settings remain in tact. Including X-reality, TrackID, all the display tweaking, connectivity settings, it's all just there. Not only is it there...I tested them.
Now on to the biggest question...photo processing and image quality.
I took photos before the unlock. And after the unlock. Unfortunately it was a different time of day, and I didn't take the image of the exact same thing each time. So it's not a perfect comparison but I could see no difference in quality. In fact I was lying in bed late at night, light off, I decided to take a photo of my bedroom pointing at a flat screen monitor in the distance used to monitor my security cameras. I was blown away at how well the photo is lit given I was in complete darkness.
I'm not photo expert, so all I can do is tell you I saw no difference. But in the end it was well worth unlocking the BL and no features have been lost. By the way, sorry these aren't full size.
One more thing...there's a lot of talk about backing up the DRM keys? I assume that's on the TA partition? Well...when doing my TWRP backup, I noticed I had the option to check the TA partition. I did...not sure if restoring it would actually make any difference (especially considering I didn't see a difference anyway). But it would seem to me that if I can see the TA partition in TWRP and actually back it up that it's not lost?
LOCKED BL - Testing Background Blur
LOCKED BL
LOCKED BL
UNLOCKED BL (slightly different time of day, now we're in the evening hours, not as much sunlight coming in my home)
UNLOCKED BL w/FLASH ON (evening hours again, not much sunlight coming in the home, decided to test with flash).
UNLOCKED BL w/FLASH ON --- This is in my bedroom, pitch black, not lights on. Flash ON - Z3
UNLOCKED BL no flash -- Limited lighting in the room
Interesting... What about official updates OTA? Could you do a factory reset and test it?

The different for the UL is when you don that, your camera cannot get a good picture in low-light mode and if you see your picture you can see a lot of noise in the low-light.
I'm worried about the PS4 screen streaming, it comes in november and maybe it needs the drm keys or Bravia engine. No one knows til the update has been released.
To answer your questions
To answer the questions ....
1. Anytime you unlock your bootloader you can't get updates through official means. That doesn't bother me since someone always ends up posting a TWRP/CWM compatible upgrade package to overcome that.
2. I know unlocking your BL is suppose to affect low-light performance. Which is why I took the picture of my bedroom (the one with the monitor) in the background. I was sitting in pure darkness in my room when taking the photo with flash on. I thought it did a fine job. Though again I should have taken the same pic in the room before unlocking the BL. In the end I guess my point is, unless you're super picky I don't notice a tremendous difference. Does the camera at 20MP locked or unlocked look dramatically different from the LG Optimus G, HTC One M7, or HTC M8 I've owned previously, not really.
My main goal was to ensure performance wasn't DRASTICALLY reduced to the point I was pissed off. Mission accomplished. If it can do better in low light, great but for me this will suffice. Worth having Titanium Backup, Adaway, TWRP, etc.
3. I can't be positive since the update hasn't been released but if all the other features are working, I don't see why they would disable Playstation function. But I have no intention on using that anyway. I don't even play games with my phone. I can confirm that the PS3/PS4 pair with controller function is still there. And while I'm at work and didn't test it, I walked-thru as far as I could go without having a controller and all indications point to the ability still working. I did read that someone with an UL Bootloader confirmed TrackID wasn't working. But I actually used TrackID to identify music playing with no issue. Further allowing me to think that the PS integration should be no issue either.
In the end it's all at your own risk. But unless you're a super photography nut I think you'll find the camera is on par with most other flagship camera smartphones. Even at 20Mp, I never saw anything earth shattering before the UL or after. Definitely didn't notice anything adverse that made me say "damn it, why did I do that". I just wanted to help those on the fence.

Why do a comparison if you are gonna blame it on the time of day anyway? The UL pics looks much, much worse. Look at the keys on the laptop for example. Or anywhere, really.
Not saying it wasn't worth it for you to unlock it or anything, that's up to each own. :good:

I didn't blame anything on anything. I simply stated there would be some differences since one pic has natural lighting coming in, the other has artificial lighting. I guess you see the difference, for me it's negligible. So yeah, to each his own. When I want DSLR quality, I pull out my DSLR.
Crop 100% your pics.

I just picked up a captivate, haven't even unboxed it yet.
I'm going to hang onto my N1, so if anyone wants to see any side by side comparisons, please ask away.
My Nexus is unlocked/rooted running CM6-RC1.
Let me know guys. This is the kind of thing I wanted to see before buying one, but no one had done it, so I just want to help others out in the name of science.

I would like to see a side by side comparison of the screens close up on the same picture. Engadget did this for the N1 and iPhone4 to show the difference in being able to see pixels on the screen. Just curious how good a super AMOLED screen looks up close compared to an AMOLED screen. Also, it would be nice to see the difference in the camera quality in pictures taken by the N1 vs. the Captivate.
A comparison would be great.
I'm too fed up with my Samsung Jack and couldnt wait for WP7 so I can compare it myself against Android (I really like having Outlook on my phone which is the main reason I didnt get an Android device till now).
I just ordered the Captivate. Been messing around with a friend's N1 running Froyo and its pretty damn good, so I guess i'd like to see how the two stack up, especially given that Captivate still runs 2.1 and ATT sucks at upgrading in a timely manner.
I would like too see a screen comparison, camera and build quaility. Thanks..
I would love to see some side by side shots etc. Especially the performance of the camera against the Nexus one's.
More importantly I would like to see the OP updated instead of having to scroll through the thread .
Thanks in advance!

I'm not just gonna do some huge review based on my opinion that no one would give a crap about, that's stupid. The purpose of this thread was to see if there was anything specific that someone would want to see.
I'm not gonna get into any opinion based stuff, like build quality. Pictures and video make it easy for people to make their own decisions.
Tomorrow I'll take some shots with each phone and put them up, then put a couple hi res photos on each and take a pic side by side.

I haven't done much with the Captivate today other than what I'm doing for this thread, so its hard to say.
A couple of things, the screen is awesome. I hate to say this, but it feels faster than my N1. Just has a snappier feel. Its killing the N1 on web page loading times.
Not having a trackball to wake the phone up is killing me. Not being able to sideload apk's without using adb is really getting old too. Of course I couldn't use Titanium backup to redo all my apps+data, so thats a *huge* set back.
Added photos....
Did you get the Tmobile version or the AT&T version? I like the Tmobile version better. AT&T likes to **** around with physical specs and styles.
Unfortunately I just bought my Nexus on contract with Tmobile, so no new phones for a while (which doesn't bother me).
Regardless I would like some side by side pics of thickness and screen size. Supposedly Froyo was going to be available in August to all of the Galaxy 2's. I don't know how the carriers are going to handle it but thats what I read.
Also I think while the Samsung looks brighter (semi-negative) I think it has better contrast with the colors. The Nexus 1 looks a tad washed out. Nothing major though. It could also be the auto light sensor as well.
Both phones are look great. I would probably be really on the fence about the N1 or Samsung if I was in the market and had neither. Lots of my friends are looking at Android and I am referring them to the Samsung just because of the new processor and high specs on the major carriers (AT&T mostly).
I think if the Galaxy is popular enough, we may see a large community fan base that is able to root and support custom roms and tweaks. Because I like to tinker it would be a hard decision right now to buy the Samsung until a few months when we learn more about the bootloader and ease of roms.
If the Samsung was able to be opened up like the Nexus, it would be a no brainer purchase. With limited knowledge about the Sammy right now I think I would wait to see how it shapes up or get the Nexus if you couldn't wait. Or buy both like the OP!
Update, just added a video to the top post, showing some speed tests. Sorry for the crappy quality, I have a decently old cam.
Also, just copied an Xvid avi file right to the phone, it plays great. I also got speeds around 6-8MB/second while copying, which trumps the N1's 2MB speed.
We have a phone that now works
So its time to show off those photos with our sexy omnivision sensor
and yes the photos look better than something taken on a fisher's price camera
Without further ado...

depends on conditions
lower lighting I use iso of 4 or 8 depends though
surprisingly indoors, I just use tungsten or fluorescent
thats one huge reason why i liked in previous os versions you couldn't save settings. Ideally, because the shot changes, I would want a new set of settings (as long as it was default to 5 mp I'm a happy camper, samsung focus users on the other hand begged for the camera saving settings)
The camera is surprisingly more usable now, and really shines in outdoor photos. I'll try your iso settings when I'm inside.
One thing I hate, with all of my heart, is the white striping over the flash. It's printed on the plastic that is attached to the battery cover. It ruins pictures that use the flash, especially when the subject is medium-close. You just see these really ugly yellow-white bars over the image. It's a real dealbreaker so I try not to use the flash at all.
I've been planning my attack to remove it without removing the entire plastic piece. The stripes feel slightly raised, but i'm sure it can be sanded down and cleaned with a light solvent. Anyone got any ideas?
What's the use of the white stripe? Does it disperse the flash evenly to prevent harsh tones?
Not sure of its intended purpose. Plenty of other phones just have the LED under a clear plastic cover and they take pictures just fine. It's almost as if it was put there to intentionally ruin shots with the flash!
its supposed to act as a light "defuser" (sp), but it sucks.
Arc, if you manage to remove it, post a how to please.

on my way to the gym today i took a bunch of pix with the dvp... about 70% were crap. green, blurry, to dark... this was all outside in blasting 90+ sun i also took a few shots in the very brightly lit gym.. but it was a blur-fest.
here are some non-crap ones.
(i'm running mango beta 2 and 212)
I think the best feature relevant to the DVP camera is "tap to snap" -- being able to tap on the screen to take the photo instead of pressing that infernal camera button has led to less blurry shots for me.
hrmm.. never tried the tab-to-hopefully-not-blur
i'll try that tomorrow.

Is "tap to snap" a Mango feature?
tap to snap pix, for me, are as good (bad) as using the button... oh well
then its probably how the camera is being held
steady hand on any camera, not just the dvp
also while the dvp takes good shots, you also should try some sort of editing too if needed. Autofix is a powerful thing
In darker lighting increase iso gain and play with the settings till you get a proper image. Also the nokia camera lense from the n8 is unbelievable
I wish Dell would add an anti-shaking setting to the camera like the Samsung Focus. When this setting defaulted to on in the Focus NoDO release, picture quality went way up. This, plus some better color correction, would make the DVP camera acceptable.

Yes, sadly.
Try the Camera FV-5 apk. Not that any particular app makes the pictures look better but it gives you a DSLR complete control feel to it. Also the Aviary apk (free) has some nice simple touch ups for pictures.

Whats wrong with the pics?
The Moto pictures look as said saturated blurred and low in quality.
The camera of the Z3 is the best one I ever had. Even in low light enviroment it makes awesome pics.
Compare some pics in the evening when u are watching tv with lights out and be happy to have a phone with such an awesome cam.
The Cam and the Display are the 2 things that keeps me away from installing CM.
If u want more colors play a bit around with the special effects f.e. hdr.

So, I wasn't there but this is what I interpret the pictures as.
The Moto G pics aren't really over-saturated, they just lack dynamic range (difference between dark vs light areas). They essentially tuned the sensor so that if this sort of thing happens, it chooses the brighter side of the scene. The leaves and darker areas can't be recorded as dark as they actually were, so it chooses to make the overall picture just brighter. Sony does a much better job of capturing the light areas such as the concrete and also the darker shades and leaves. The other difference is white balance, the Sony chose something a little cooler, and the Moto warmer. Without being there, tough to say which is more accurate but from the pics I'd say the Sony got it right.
Easy fix, force the Sony to overexpose or use something like pixlr to boost exposure.
Second picture is much of the same, the thing that jumps out is the red colors. In the moto it looks orange, in the Z it looks much more red. Again, if I had to guess the Z got it right.
Now, this is all great with plants, rocks, and garden hoses, but what happens when you take a picture of people? Those Moto pics are going to look off, like people's faces look like cake and lack the proper color it needs.

The first thing what I want to express is it is the same phone as M8 until you picked it into your own hands..
As this fabulous handheld happened in your own hands – you begin getting overwhelmed with a brand new experience after HTC M8.
Using M9 is unexpectedly fresh and very much refined experience in comparison to M8: the shape of the phone, and how it feels in your hands (it’s not slippery anymore), and its new very dark gun-metal tint; furthermore the Sense 7 experience is amazing and vivid.
The next thing – new BoomSound. The amount of base was slightly decreased but the quality and clarity of the base was significantly improved. After M9 speakers, M8 sounds if I may say “cheap”..
I made some screenshots and uploaded ZIP archive to my Dropbox:

Did you update the software to latest?
How is the screen compared to M8? Is it less bright?
Thanks for the mini review
With all this doom and gloom sad news for HTC lately, everyone makes the M9 sound like the worst phone ever created.
I owned the M8 last year, and flashed the GPE ROM, and I LOVED that phone, such a good size, easy to one hand operate, unlike the popular 5.5" and larger phones.
Can you please post pictures of the phone itself. I haven't seen a lot of the Gunmetal Grey M9 pics, most sites just have the Gold or Silver version.
1. The screen is same bright as M8 screen but a bit "warmer", however that may simply vary due to different manufacturer..
2. You feel the shape of m9 body is different (and new shape is better)
3. Gun-metal isn't slippery anymore.
4. Gun-metal color is now nearly black. (imho more beautiful and luxury)
5. Yes, the software is the latest.

Can u see the display in dark room from this diagonal angle and confirm the quality of the screen. Is it like the left one or whit this grey /shadow like the right one
The animation of entire UI is that much smooth and snappy that makes a strange feeling of being UNREAL..
Surely such impressions feeling is very much appreciated.

Looks like outdoor quality photos are better than what we saw before, trees for example are less smudgy, though still not as detailed as Note 4.
As for indoor photos it's still oily paint when 100% scale
It was sunny when you took the photos? it looks like cloud overcast
Nice shots
I think the shots looked good. Would like to see some more outdoor with colors, hdr and possibly more macro shots. Produces really nice detail on the watch !
the main question here is how is the battery life? better than m8? stats? figures? screen on time?
1. Today isn't sunny at all long white cloud..
2. Did you see a dove flying in the sky on image # 44 ?
3. Two photos in the restaurant are HDR photos.
4. The handheld is in use 24 hours - what battery life are you talking about?
Thank you, kind sir, for taking time to share these with us Your mini review is much appreciated! Just to clarify, these photos have been taken after applying the recent software update, am I right?
The handheld software is up to date. See AIDA64 screenshots for more info. Thank you.

Oh well, finally HTC updates their Kernel and GPU driver:silly:
I hope they also brings the update to M8 even M7
The new GPU driver shows v103,the latest one is v104 though...
The photos are pretty good. If you could gives us more it'd be nice.
Any signs of overheating?
Also some more battery info would be nice.
Thanks for your post !

Can you take a photo of the phone in low light and from a low side view to see if the screen is getting washed out or not?
Btw did you tried it under direct sunlight? if yes it's as easy to view the screen than M8 or worse?
Thank you. The pics looks better than I hoped for. You can see the absence of ois but it's still much better than I hoped for. Having been a proud owner of both M7 and M8, the smoothness is in another ballgame than say... Touchwiz. Using a note 4 with today version of lollipop it's much better but HTC has always been smooth as an apple.
Sent from a mobile gadget...
About photos from M9...didn't you notice green tint in many pictures?
For example look at this photo. Nothing wrong to your eyes?
The pictures looked cool on my Nexus 7 2013 display, but then I downloaded the zip on my PC, and I'm not really satisfied with them, at 100%, with non-optimal light, there's a hell lot of noise, it looks like watercolor.
The first thing I noticed when using the camera on this phone was how the images looked over processed. Most notably, I did a digital zoom photo yesterday and the sharpening on it was disgusting. It didn't even look like a photo.

See what I mean? All I did was zoom in and take a photo. It looks horrible.
Look at this picture for example
Even just zoomed in a bit you can see way too much sharpening going on
Now I know this phone is a "budget phone" but it supposedly has the same lens as the Galaxy S7 so that isn't really an excuse. It looks like it comes down to it being the processing that moto put in.
Can anybody out there please let me know if rooting my phone and shooting RAW will produce cleaner photos? I would have to guess so, since I can control the sharpening myself. I haven't been able to find any RAW samples from this phone.
is it a software thing? I've converted to snap camera on whatever device.
I'm afraid it's in the firmware. Any camera app I've tried yields the same results
U should probably return or replace u your phone I had the same issue without even zooming
The phone couldn't focus on things right next the camera mine also had pink tints while recording
So I got mine replaced
Now everything works good
It's also the processor. The G5 plus has the 625 while the S7 had the 820 allowing for much better image processing.

Well it focuses just fine, and pictures in day light look alright but there is some heavy noticeable processing going on in the moto firmware.
This picture looks pretty good but if you zoom in just a bit you can really see the over sharpening.
Here is a photo of my Nexus 5x
It looks much cleaner to me. Less over processing and less sharpening artifacts. The processor on the G5 Plus should be pretty comparable to the 808 in the N5x so I really don't think its a processor issue. It seems to me like it was a design choice by Moto. All of the sample photos I have seen also have too much sharpening. I am strongly considering just rooting the device and shooting raw. At least then I can control the sharpening myself
Well then we would have to wait for an update then

It should make no difference, if you do the same processing in software - other than perhaps taking slightly longer to process the photo?
Otherwise, we'll have to shoot RAW if we want the best quality I guess?
It seems to me however, that any settings affecting the image processing quality should have parameters which could be changed?

The processor contains the ISP or the Image Signal Processor which controls HDR, white balance, auto focus, exposure, color filters and so on. The better the ISP the better the image. So while the 2 phones have the same sensor they will never have the same image results because they have different processors and the more powerful chips have better ISP on board resulting in better images even with the same sensor.
The strength of this camera's focusing is in the sensor chip - "dual pixel focus".
All the other things you mention such as white balance, HDR, color filters are applied after the RAW image is taken - so, there's really no reason that you couldn't generate the same quality of image.
if nothing else, I'm upgrading my everyday knock around (2015) moto e. I won't complain toooooo much.
I have to agree with the OP on this one - there is some horrendous post-processing going on with this phone.
I'd love to get that to stop - even if we have to go to RAW/DNG to get it.
Has anyone done the root/Freedcam method described in another thread on here and gotten DNGs from this camera?
I'd love to see how they look... I'll eventually do it when LOS gets stable enough.
wait couple of days more, there will be some nice mods incoming for g5p camera.

Looks like a promising photo to me!
I'm new around XDA... is will flat field correction and NR come with time, or is this the best we'll get?
