Good News! Wireless Tether Is Now Infrastructure

The Wireless Tether for Root Users has just been updated and now works in infrastructure mode instead of ad-hoc.....at least it does on my Droid X. I did the update on a Samsung Fascinate and it still runs in ad-hoc mode. I guess the success of infrastructure mode is dependent on which phone you run it on.
Anyway, this means that doing the WPA_suplicant replacement on the Galaxy Tab won't be needed if your phone supports the new tether version.
BTW...if you've been using the previous (ad-hoc) version of Wireless Tether with your Tab or laptop, you'll have to re-configure the connection.

So far, I haven't noticed any speed difference.

Why wouldn't one just use the built-in Mobile AP in Settings -> Wireless & Network -> Mobile AP? I used to use Wireless Tether until Mobile AP came out. Glad to hear it's no longer adhoc though.
Keep in mind that Infrastructure mode heavily depends on your kernel. The some of the first people to get it were HTC phones (evo, Droid incredible, etc) because their kernel directly supported infrastructure mode.
If I could get Infrastructure mode for my D1, I'd be super happy, but I don't believe it's possible.

Tethering via the built-in app costs money I believe. Wireless Tether for root users does not.
I was able to use the built-in tethering at no additional charge on a T-Mobile Galaxy Tab 5G/month account.

Virgin Mobile WiFi tether to TF w/out root

Ok guys, I spent a lot time to find the best way for me to get Internet on my Transformer. I tried Bluetooth tethering with rooted MetroPCS LG Optimus M without any success my devices paired but not connected and I dont see any profile options when I tap wrench next to my phone on TF. WiFtether didnt work either, TF doesnt see WiFi hot spot.
So I have bought Virgine Mobile LG Optimus V and got 300 minutes with unlimited data for 25$ a month, then I downloaded Quick settings app from Market and in hidden settings made visible Wifi hotspot. Turned it on and Tada! TF has seen hotspot and got connected to it, I run speed test and have around 1.3Mb dl/700kb ul. Not sure will Autotether app work this way or no. But you dont have to have root! Everything works fine.
Yep, your old phone was creating an Ad-Hoc WiFi network that your Transformer cant see unless you root it and add the funcionality. With your new phone it has Infrastructure WiFi tether built in and the tablet can see that easier.

[HOW TO] TETHER in INFASTRUCTURE Via 4G

Hello all this question has been raised Countless times!! Well I just Figured something out that has worked FOR ME!!
HOW CAN YOU TETHER IN INFRASTRUCTURE MODE in 4G? No more tethering with 3g only with android ap or 4g in AD-HOC with wifi tether for root users..
What does this mean?
You can now connect to your devices that cannot connect to the AD-HOC (PEER) signal!!
EXAMPLE TABLETS, PS3 and anything else that cannot pick up the peer to peer Signal.
Also Allows Much faster tether speeds Via 4g as compared to AD-HOC
currently us users are only able to connect to 3g via The Native Tether AP you are not able to tether via 4g IN Via Infrastructure!!
My current set up if it matters ICS ROM and Mathkids most recent kernel!! And WIFI Tether v. 3.1 beta 11
MUST FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS Exactly..
1. Assuming Your set up is similar (as i have not verified it works any other way) Install WIFI Tether v. 3.1 beta 11
2. Open up the tether program - select device profile - Chose Galaxy nexus CDMA
3.Change Setup Method - Select Netd (Master)
4. Change Device Profile - Select Samsung Epic 4g
5 - Start to tether as you would normally AND OBSERVE!! MAGIC IT NOW IS TETHERING IN INFRASTRUCTURE!!!
Hopefully Wifi tether for root users can now be updated to allow the NS4g TO TETHER!! This is important and I know the few people that understand what I am talking about will surely appreciate this!!
Thanks a lot i will definitely give this a try.

Thanks! I don't get 4g that often, but this is nice to know for when I do!
This setup has always given me reboots and this is over several nexus phones not just one.

I can confirm it causes reboots but only after heavy usage, for instance I have multiple devices connected and I get a phone call while I have an app already open. I notice my battery temperature goes up to around 104 or higher when it happens. Most time its fine though.

I'm getting really slow internet this way. Normally I get about 1.5MB/sec with 4G usb tether, and now I get about 300KB/sec with wifi tether. The 4G icon shows, but I'm just not getting proper speeds. Also, speedtest showed I was getting about 60KB/sec with 4G wifi tether
Oh, and I can't get any ap passwords to work, either. The wifi app accepts them just fine, but windows says it's wrong.
This setup works perfect (FOR ME) FOR 4G in Infrastructure, as far as 3g just use android AP - Native tether - i used it for 5 and a half hours last-night plugged in not 1 reboot - make sure your set up is similar maybe the kernel or something.
IT IS DEFINITELY FASTER as i was averaging 6 Mbps down. I live in a 4g area - so this may only apply to certain individuals!!
IM USING IT AS I POST
ALSO I WAS USING HEAVY NETFLIX VIA PS3 and my computer connected downloading...
I would look into a combination of kernels - ALSO NOTE MY PHONE SETUP -
Nice! Works well with this set up connecting to my tablet in infrastructure with 4g. Battery temp isn't getting that high either.
this is working great, thank you. im currently connected to 3 devices. my pc,tv and tablet. my tv is currently streaming netflix in hd and im surfing the web and typing this message with my pc. getting 4g tether speeds between 7-10 mbs. i am running bigxie rom with latest mathkid kernal. those who are having troubles make sure you follow the instructions and not just install the apk and run it

Also i think im getting better Download performance this set up - Ive never hit 11.5 mbps and i just did..Good looking OUT!!
I finally got this working better. I had to change my rom from CM9 3.0 to aokp 25, then I changed to channel 11...now I get about 1600KB down. I tried streaming some video, but it's choppy. I don't know how some people are doing it, but it's just not smooth enough for me. So if I want to watch TV, I can switch to usb...but at least I can browse, download, etc with wifi and not have to leave my phone all the way across the living room
Thanks for the great guide!!!
oh, btw...setting the app to epic 4g touch works on NS4G, as well

Note the setup above your post seemed to actually have worked better for me. This setup obviously works best for the people who need this in 4g areas who need infrastructure..
Yeah, after I posted yesterday I saw the one above, and I'm running n1 settings now works great!

best tethering app for nexus 7??

theres so many tethering apps?? any of u guys have a preference of which ones u like? i need to get one to tether my nexus 7 off my tmobil sgs3.
i was thinking about
Wifi Hotspot & USB Tether Pro
wifi tethering by open garden
easy tether lite
so many choices...what do u guys like???
ty
FoxFi been good to me as a hotspot when i need one dont know if works well on the s3 since i have the s2
I'll be using FoxFi on my Desire for Bluetooth tethering (instead of WiFi Hotspot to save battery). And then PDANet on the Nexus 7 to pair to the phone's Bluetooth.
I haven't done this yet but this is how I believe it works from what I've read.
bump plz
I used foxfi to do Bluetooth tethering from my Droid Bionic. Required no other apps on my Nexus 7, and seems to work great. I have no clue if Verizon can tell I am doing this. I don't plan on using it much at all though, just occasionally while I travel.

Setting up either WiFi tether, or bluetooth tether on my G2x. Works great!

Yeah, just started playing with this yesterday and hit the same wall. Interestingly chrome works great when I have the connection setup this way but nothing else will see the connection, not gmail, now or any other app. To heck with the battery life, I have a monster battery on my Infuse now, tried wifi tether but my Nexus won't even see it. =/ Will keep messing with it though and see if I can come up with anything.
Gmail, Play and a lot of other apps seem to work without any issues through bluetooth tethering.
BBC News app thinks there's no internet connection though, so that's one app I can't use.
Loading web-view of an article in gReader Pro informs me there's no internet connection but loads the web page just fine in dolphin browser after clicking on OK.
The Nexus 7 can be configured to do USB tethering natively
i keep getting force close on foxfi had to uninstall

How to wifi tether using a phone with 2.1 android

Hi.
Recently bought a Nexus 7 and i've been trying to use wifi tethering but can't seem to be able to do it.
I have a rooted Samsung GT-I5801 phone with android 2.1 and i've been using wifi tethering without a problem with my IPAD. In Nexus, it doesn't show in the list of available wifi networks to connect.
Already tried to tether bluetooth but apparently it's not possible with android 2.1
Any ideias of what i'm doing wrong?
Already tried to install FoxFi, but it's not compatible with android 2.1
help?
If applicable, try checking that the phone is set to 2.4 ghz for wi-fi output, rather than 5ghz. Nexus 7 supports the former only.
I can tether my htc sensation to the nexus 7 so it does work.

Step 1,2 and 5 in the tutorial are not needed.
Thank you for your replies.
Managed to get it working by installing Open Garden in both devices. Everything is working.
Thank you for your help
