Move over Dalvik, ART is here to stay... - Nexus 6 General

I have the Nexus 5 now, but I haven't messed around with switching from Dalvik to ART runtime. Do you think there will be a noticeable difference with the Nexus 6 running ART by default?

Yes.

This phone will run ART be default. I don't even think Dalvik is an option any longer.

I know I'm ready!

In Kitkat ART was still in development and was far from finished. Once testing and building proved stable developers for L removed Dalvik and placed the final build of ART as their primary and ONLY Runtime now.
I just hope we see Xposed support for it not before long!

The ART we've had in KitKat is not the ART we'll have in Lollipop. The new ART runtime is also fully compatible with Dalvik properties , stability issues should not be a problem

Dalvik properties or not we will not know how much work it will be for some developers to port over mods for Proper ART. Xposed Framework is one of those key mods and we have still not heard anything since the summer on the matter.
I know that the developer was waiting for when Proper ART was released, but I am just worried that the developer might have ditched development due to being badgered all the time.

This. I've been spoiled by all my Xposed modules on my N5.

I use ART since my update to 4.4.2.. no realated stability issue.. only some apps doesn't work at all with new runtime.. but now they have to update..

I used ART since the day I received my N5 on November 6th last year. My N5 never ran on Dalvik!

Does it means expose modules is dead?

In late October 2013 was when Paranoid Android leaked a prerelease version of KitKat for the the Nexus 4. I installed it and switched on ART, from that day onward I never went back to Dalvik.

[Q] No Multi-Window Feature in OMNI ROM?

Hi everyone! I hope I have came to the right place. I recently rooted my Galaxy Note 2 on AT&T that was running 4.3. Had some issues mainly because I forgot to also flash Gapps to my phone. Anyway, before I flashed OMNI ROM to my phone, I was wiping data like I saw you were supposed to do when I wiped the Android OS... I know what you are thinking, n00b. Honestly, I have wanted to root my phone for a while but it seemed complicated. So anyway, it said I had no OS installed. So naturally, I freaked out. Then I thought, woah! I can just flash OMNI ROM now so I can still have a phone! Which I did and Gapps and my phone is working awesome now. Just like Android 4.4.2. However, the only feature missing is the Multi-Window Feature. Is this because I erased the OS before I flash OMNI ROM? I tried downloading multi window support from the Play Sore however it just said that I don't have a file installed or my device isn't supported. Which I know it is because I used to use Multi-Window like it was my job. Any help would be awesome everyone. Thanks and have a wonderful day! (Sorry for the long post)
Try to find an unofficial build for your device that has it. I maintain builds for the HTC One and Samsung Nexus 10 (m7att and manta, respectively) that include it. It's not in unofficial builds yet due to issues/coding in it, but it's decently stable if you can find an unofficial build in your device forum.

I downloaded one that was official and unofficial. Both said they had Multi-Window Support. Do you think I should unroot and go back to Stock ROM and try to re-root but this time not erasing the entire Android OS?

Not at all. The official ones do not have it. If the unofficial one you're trying doesn't have it, but is listed, then ask the person who compiled it.
If the unofficial version has multiwindow but you can't turn it on, then maybe you don't know how to? It's not the same as Crapsungs implementation.
1. Open any apps
2. hold down the home button to get to the recent apps
3. Touch and hold on an application
4. Select add to split view

Thanks everyone for your replies! I saw that Add Split View option before but I didn't know if I was supposed to be able to hold the back button to open up the Multi-Window Sidebar.

Reluctant to update from 4.3

I’ve been holding off on updating to KK (for a long time ) and after reading some threads I’m not convinced it’s an improvement. Is there any really compelling reason to update to KK? Seems to be quite a few performance complaints. People seem to be having mixed results with Lollipop with many complaining about their KK experience too.
I’m really happy with JB. Battery life and overall system performance is great. Plus I like the blue system icons better than white.
What is your experience with KK and would you recommend updating? Why?
Um don't update to KitKat...update to lollipop. Its much better
Don't. I gave 5.0 a try & it is worst than KitKat. WAAAAYYY worse.
I ended up flashing back to 4.3 JellyBean.

Its better than KitKat was. What really works well is if you flash an f2fs filesystem based ROM. It makes a huge difference and the tablet actually works.
Well I think this debate answers my question. I'll stick with JB until the smoke clears. Thanks to all who responded.
KitKat is OK, but Lollipop is awful...
Don't do it.
KitKat ruined my tilapia. The smell was horrible.
Seriously, though, grab CM 10 if you have the urge to flash something other than stock. KK ruins the battery life of the 7. I tried SlimKat 8. I tried CM 11 nightly as well as a snapshot. I even tried Google's official KK, which was what got me started flashing the thing. They just are horrible on the battery. SlimKat was the best experience besides CM 10. But CM 10 is the best so far IMHO.
Haven't charged my tablet since "downgrading" to stock 4.3 in a week now. Still has plenty of battery left. KK would have eaten through 1/2 the battery in a day. Just some more food for thought if anyone reading this is still thinking they want KK on their 7. Or if they already did the dirty deed and are wondering what they lost.

Highly unlikely as there are no Condor releases for CM11 at the moment.
@percy_g2 will port CM12 for Condor, hopefully sometime soon, read this thread for more info (search for "CM12" in that thread).

I'm starting to think that we will never get our android 5.0 or CM12... a lot of devices got it already, and got official Cm12 nightly... and our Moto E still on CM11... :crying:

Motorola announced that Moto E will get Android 5.x, chances are that we will get it during this month, for CM12 it will probably take more time for an unofficial stable release. What worries me is that Android 5.x comes with ART runtime and Dalvic is no longer included, and because apps take more space on ART having just 2GB of space for apps will be very limiting. Hopefully we will be able to move apps to SD in CM12 and Android 5.x.

Currently Benzo. Kind wanted more features than stock. However I'm considering switching to either cleanrom or Chroma. Opening apps doesn't feel snappy on benzo.

Stock 5.1 "E", installed via fastboot on a Motorola Store Nexus 6.
Although I want to root for tethering and some other nice-to-haves, this stock version of 5.1 is running noticeable faster than 5.0.1 and has much of what I already want for this phone.

Temaseks cm12. Smooth and fast. 5.1 is coming soon
I am one of those bizarre creatures that doesn't unlock, root, mod a Nexus. I was the same with The N5. So totally stock and satisfied here. On LMY47I.

All my years of rooting phones, back to the OG evo 4g, (lurked on XDA for 2 years before creating an account) I've always ended up running AOSP or something close. I love pure Android and the Google experience. As it turns out, for me, stock Nexus is perfect for my needs right out of the box. Honestly, I was a complete flashaholic and it's also nice to not spend so much time flashing.
After trying Chroma for a bit, I switched back to stock, there're things provided by Google that I miss in custom roms (Google Now voice control).

Sony releases the binaries for Android M!

Holy smokes that was fast! Kudos Sony!
http://developer.sonymobile.com/201...-binaries-added-to-sonys-open-device-program/
Meaning the "preview" will soon perish nice
Btw, thats with 3.10 kernel?
Gonna do a build now, who's keen to flash? I doubt many things will work, mainly RIL (Phone/SMS) and Camera that I'm 99% sure wont..
Just got my phone back from Warranty so not going to unlock just yet in case it has it's own issues right away.
I think the AOSP builds have availabled for 3 months ago? Just have not been the latest binary.

The older builds still used the old API level and didn't include all of the features from what I can see.
Build still running, could be a little while yet.
Edit: Failed - libperipheral_client.so: File format not recognized in the Sony vendor files - hmm.

Based on the image above, looks like there is some corruption in the binaries, might message jerplea later on and see if there is a fix around.

No, and no recovery for lollipop as of yet.
i've flashed the Lolipop AOSP from FXP few days ago, had a recovery included.
