I've had a lot of phones, a LOT of phones, but I'm honestly a little sad to see the Z2 go. I'll be ordering the Z3 as soon as it drops but I can say for the first time in a long time it's not because I have any problems with the device I have now. My motivation for the Z3 is for LTE Band 12, VoLTE (I still can't figure out if this is dependent on a T-Mo branded phone), and WiFi calling/texting.

WiFi calling is awesome.
VoLTE is decent, but HD Voice was already a thing on HSPA+ with T-Mobile devices, so it just adds the functionality of not dropping background data when making/receiving phone calls.
Band 12 is the biggest reason I'm JUMPing from my Galaxy S 5. I may not get to use it for a while, but it'll be well worth it when I do!

I think you'll really like it! People knock Touchwiz but it never bothered me, however, I'll say I really like how Sony's UI is really more like a polish of stock Android. A good example of this is, most AOSP Xposed modules work on stock Sony rom's.

Hopefully there is someone who maybe has done a pre-order on Tmo before that can help me out a little bit. I'm currently on ATT and looking to switch over. If I preorder tonight would I have to get all my plan details set up? Or can I just preorder the phone now and worry about the plan later?
Coming from a Nexus 5. Was a little worried about losing the quick updates from google, but I realized I'm rooted and running liquidsmooth so my updates come from them anyways. Just wish they had the Tmobile version coming in copper

You would have to have the plan setup during purchase unless you are ordering it for the full retail price with no service, if its available for purchase at that option tonight. More likely you can do that at SonyMobile in a few days I'd imagine.

Keep in mind T-Mo plans are pretty simplistic. Not a whole lot to think about except for how much data you'll need. Also remember you can always move up or down without penalty or other charges.

Just a quick note there really is no reason to pre-order as this device will be widely available in stores on its release date

I too am joining the pre-order party! This will be my first sony phone, and I am extremely excited to give this a shot.

Generally pre-orders get there before store release date. And some of us prefer dealing with online anyway.
One good reason why

Nada - no link or email..

Well this is dissapointing.

I think the site is updating now, I can't browse around if you go into my.tmobile.com and go to shop. It never brings up the phone choices after you pick the line you want to upgrade.

I think I'm just going to get an iPhone

We have 4G phones now!

Yay!
T-Mobile has decided that its HSPA+ network qualifies as "4G," so that's what they're calling it now. I feel faster already!

lol they still call it 3g with 4G speeds
sorry to burst your bubble
I think calling it HSPA+ does it more justice than "4G". And it's "4G-like speeds" since I believe serious 4G is 100 Mbps on the down speed.

yes, that 168 is FUTURE plans..... (who knows when that will be)
ACTIVE thoretical speeds are 21 Mbps
ACTIVE actual speeds are 6MBps - 12MBps (peak)
they have to go through stages... like 42 MBps upgrade..... and so on... they are not gonna jump to 168 over night..... there arent even any devices out that support those speeds. HECK we dont even have devices right now that support 21 MBps.... G2 is capable of 14.4 max MBPS....
I am not flaming you or anything, just saying that you can't always count on future speculations.
I love T-Mo btw, and deff love their new marketing strategy.

Really? The article I'm referring to was posted on the Information Week site today, November 3, 2010 08:50 AM, just a couple hours before I posted here.
Does everyone understand that what they're apparently saying now isn't "the G2 is a phone with 4G speeds," but that HSPA+ is literally 4G?
In a press release issued yesterday, T-Mobile specifically refers to the G2 as one of their "4G products." I hadn't seem them do that before.

60kilobits/sec, which quite frankly is next to useless.
This is becoming an interesting little tempest in a teapot today. The Wall Street Journal weighed in about an hour ago. I can't post links, but google "4G Image Scrambled As T-Mobile USA Enters The Mix" and you'll find it.
According to the article, T-Mobile began their campaign yesterday (so I'm still not sure how it's "old news," although I know folks here are pretty plugged in).
On T-Mobile's main site, I'm not seeing references to HSPA+ anymore. They're just "America's largest 4G network" and the G2 is a 4G product.
Lotta controversy coming from the competitors, though.

I can partially agree that it's "old news" because I understood it a while ago that it's not truly 4G. I also noticed that today, there've been more articles being released about T-Mobile's campaign.

Those articles are all responding to the press release and campaign begun by TMO yesterday, which has started a controversy. In short, they say your understanding is wrong now.
Yes, we all know that prior to yesterday TMO was saying the G2 had "4G-like speeds."
But starting yesterday, they said, basically, "heck with it, our HSPA+ network IS 4G. Consumers aren't interested in all that 'alphabet soup.'" (their words).
So, if you walk into the store where I bought an HSPA+ G2 two weeks ago, they are now selling 4G G2s. Same phone, though.
Im the original post, I was simply pointing out that their announcement yesterday kicked up a backlash all over the net today. Even the Huffington Post had an article, calling TMO's network a "4GERY." (Clever.)

Its Official, Sprint converts CDMA network to LTE

http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/07/sprint-converts-its-cdma-network-to-lte/
They plan on lessening the hardware footprint by building multimode stations for the towers. At the top of the tower in the same radio they'll have 1.9 LTE, 1.9 CDMA, 800 CDMA and in the future 800 LTE. With LightSquared they'll have 1600 LTE. Sprint plans to have 120 LTE markets by the end of 2012, with LTE capable devices starting to appear the middle of next year. WiMAX devices will continue to be sold through 2012.

that it will, and unfortunately with this new upgrade program Sprint is implementing, we're going to probably all be waiting till late 2012 or early 2013 to actually use that upgrade for any of the LTE capable devices.
Im sure Philly will be 1 of those first markets to get it so that good for me......
but how will this affect the Evo? Or will I have to upgrade to a LTE phone?
Hopefully when it comes out the Evo 4G+ will be LTE

The Evo wont work with LTE, so if you want to use lte you would need to buy an lte phone.
As far as your evo, it seems like Wimax will still be supported for at least a few years, just no new expansion.

They still plan on using WiMAX along with LTE through 2012, so the EVO should be fine. After 2012 though, its not looking good for WiMAX. I would like to see Sprint's theoretical speed tests of this new network before I upgrade, though I'm certain they'll be much higher than WiMAX considering Verizon's speed tests.

Exactly...my mom still has the 1 yr upgrade come november, so I still may get the galaxy s II, but then we'll still have to upgrade come that time, once the LTE comes out and some actual LTE phone come out, but then by that point, the second wave of LTE phones will be out, so should have a decent selection.
Wasn't a huge fan of WiMAX. Hopefully with LTE Sprint will continue building out their network for better coverage. My upgrade is in June 2012 so it should be interesting to see what's out on the market.
No more losing Wimax keys as well lol..
Eh, WiMax sucks anyways. I get significantly faster HSPA+ speeds then WiMax, without all the coverage holes, building penetration issues, and battery drain. Good riddance.
So I guess I can stop checking the Clear coverage map for Wimax in my area.
well I should still have an upgrade come next june, so hopefully i'll be able to grab a LTE device.

If you knew anything you'd know that it has NOTHING to do with WiMax itself and that WiMax is actually a better standard with proper implementation/spectrum.
It's Betamax/VHS situation all over again.

Beginning to think its all an illusion..yep..heard the same about 4G when the EVO came out and after...still no 4G here. Won't believe it until I see it then it will be time to buy another phone on some promised hype that never shows.
If Sprint ever does away with unlimited data or raises rates I will be gone or maybe that is just an illusion too.
I wanted to upgrade to iPhone but now I'm holding it untill Sprint lte comes out with new lte phones.

It's not like much of the value is going to be lost over the next 6 months.
There's not gonna be another iPhone for a year or whatever.
Exactly !! Wimax is way better than LTE and so is its design and network sprint and clearwire don't have the money to make such a huge change and upgrade to WiMAX Rev.2

T-Mobile Z3 connected to Band 12 (I think)

Hi Folks,
I've been talking to a few people on Howard Forums who think this is impossible, but now on several different occasions, LTE Discovery has shown my phone as being connected to Band 12. This is a stock, D6616 which is currently showing Bands 2 and 4 as active in the service screen and NOT Band 12. Can this be possible? I was able to pull over, stay connected and run a speed test on Band 12 which showed 10mbps download, which sounds about right given that it's just a 5mhz channel. Oh, and this was in San Jose, CA and then Cupertino/Saratoga, CA. Another weird issue is that, I don't believe the Channel 51 interference has been solved here.
So, I'm not trying to spread misinformation but could it be that the T-Mobile Z3 actually has Band 12 out of the box? Or, is LTE Discovery simply inaccurate and this is all just a dream?

That may just be wrong, I pretty sure it has to be turned on via an update. Sprint did the same with the G2.
If you are in Cupertino/San Francisco, I believe T-Mobile does not have permission to use band 12 in your area. They have to make a deal with the local TV station to get them off 51.
T-Mobile Band 12 spectrum Map, current state:
https://sites.google.com/site/cellularbinder/t-mobile-700a-spectrum
I thought the whole reason (besides to LOCK OUR BOOTLOADERS) that T-Mobile has its own variant is that it supports Band 12. I know mine has had band 12 in some areas where I live for a while now.
They have band 12 in my area too, in Minneapolis if you look at the band 12 spectrum map, but until it's finished testing they won't push the OTA update to your phone to enable it. Sprint did the same, they eventually sent an OTA enabling their third band. Though with the G2 you could still enable even without it using the Hidden Settings menu, which is crippled on the D6616, probably on TMOs wishes.
Two things amaze me about this situation:
1) The Samsung devices on T-Mobile (and LG for that matter) are usually bootloader unlocked. Why must T-Mobile force Sony to lock all the bootloaders? It's very odd as usually T-Mobile is the best carrier on that front. Sorry, I know this is off-topic.
2) Why would the Note 4 already support Band 12 and they didn't demand that Samsung lock that one out?
@lunaandres: Are you saying your T-Mobile Z3 has connected to Band 12? How did you verify it? More info would be fantastic.
Thanks,
-Collin-

Does that officially mean that Sony's lollipop update for Xperia Z3 D6616 will be released in May 2015? Ugh.
Sadly, I proved my own theory and wishes wrong yesterday and just wanted to update you guys.
I drove over to the same spot where I regularly see Band 12 on LTE Discovery and I popped my T-Mobile SIM into my Verizon Tablet Z2. We know for a fact that there is no Band 12 support on that tablet, yet sure enough LTE Discovery reported Band 12 loud and clear.
Bummer, definitely not a Band 12 siting on my devices. Sad

I know that back in June T-Mobile enabled band 12 for Z3, but when I check T-Mobile's page where it lists devices that are compatible with band 12, Xperia Z3 is not on the list: http://www.t-mobile.com/optional-services/coverage-phones-700.html

Its probably a mistake on the website, it works. In fact I actually disable bands 2 &4 so I am always on band 12 which gives me full signal and hence greater battery life. Speeds will be lower though as TMO has less spectrum on that band.

I have tried that,so when I disable LTE bands 2 and 4, my phone connects to 4G bands, but if I disable 4G, then there is no service. I guess the area where I was, doesn't have band 12 available yet. I will try it again. By the way do you know, in which case phone should connect to band 12? Is it only when there is not band 2/4 around?
Then I suppose you live in an area without Band 12 Support or maybe its only in testing in a few places near you?
It should connect to Band 12 when the other two bands drop too low, I get 2-3 bars on 2&4 and when it goes to one bar then it switches to Band 12 which then shows full signal.

I checked the map of where T-Mobile has band 12 and found 3 locations(all within 20 min driving from each other) The only thing is that band 2 and 4 in these areas are really good, never go below 4 bars. I will try to disable all bands except band 12 and see if phone will connect. When I work, phone isn't getting LTE inside the building, but 3 or 4G is there, but data doesn't go through for some reason. That is where I would need band 12

FYI- Band 12 works on T-mo

Got my Z5 premium and Band 12 works out of the box. I have not seen any settings for Wi-fi calling, so I am assuming that will not work.
WiFi calling won't work until T-Mobile supports the phone or there is an official CyanogenMod 13 ROM for the Z5...I believe Cyanogen said CM13 would have T-Mobile WiFi calling baked in.

The signal quality is great. I have at times gotten LTE bands 2, 4 and 12, so I have found it quite good. I Am loving the UI and the interface. And it is the fastest 810 based phone I have had based on feel and benchmarks. Also, zero heat issues. I dont think that I have have even felt it get warm

If your in the U.S., it won't make a difference which model you get...there's extra bands on the dual sim variant but those are for Asia regions...

Does anyone know if VOLTE works on the Z5P? It has the band support for it.
xperia z5 premium help
Hey quick question. Is there anyone who can help me with this issue? I have an Xperia Z5 Premium and I cant get it to work with T-Mobile LTE. I inserted my sim card, followed the procedure, restarted my phone etc. but it still doesnt show any data signal at all. Is there an additional process you have to go through. I went to the APN settings and updated it but all i get now is edge (2g) I had the Z3 before and was getting around 35-100 Mbps in my area. now i cant even load a web page. Can you (or anyone reading this) help me out. I sold my z3 just hours before my z5 came, which was a mistake since now i really cant do anything with my phone (besides use it on WiFi and call). Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
btw my phone model is Sony Xperia Z5 Premium E6853

You have to setup the APN settings - https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-2090
Settings>More>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names

Under preferred network type, do you have LTE (preferred) checked?
Also, in your APN settings, is your APN "fast.t-mobile.com" ?

Use something like Network Signal Info.
It's a result of the fact that in the US, carriers screwed over customers by redefining HSPA+ as "4G". Frequently referred to as Faux-G.
So when a US device reports 4G, an international device will usually just report the truth (H+)
When a US device reports LTE (because the US carriers ****ed up the definition of 4G), international devices will usually just report 4G, because in the rest of the world, 4G == LTE.
Z5P is definitely in this category. HSPA+ = H+, LTE = 4G

It depends on which firmware you are using. Most area in Euro will display 4g as LTE but they mean the same thing. I suggest you flash it to other area which display LTE instead.
I got band 12 here. What is weird is that when I show 1 to 2 bars, my wife's Nexus 6 with the same carrier will show full bars. Yet when I look at Lte Discovery, we have the same signal strength.

The signal bars can often be wrong. They give false signal information
You can check with TechMode (Sony's band checker app).
It's in oem.sin of Customized UK and I deodexed Z5 one:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24459283995301842
After placing it to /system/app, chmod 644 and reboot, you can open TechMode with dialing *#*#*386#*#*

Show us your 4G LTE Speeds World Wide!! All carriers!! All Countries!!

Ahh, I see.. Are they working on building out LTE? What is the fastest mobile speed you can get currently on 3g? I spent some time in Bangladesh and South West India and they also do not have LTE.

That would be frustrating!! Hopefully its cheap!! My cousin is in Romania and they don't have LTE there yet but they have HSPA that is about 8meg but he can get unlimited data for like 40$ a month.

I had relatives visit from Manila. They said the reception and service is so bad you use dual sim cards so you always have a backup option ?
Most people here in the US don't realize 4G is not common in many countries. LOL. Even 3G is not common.

Are you sure the Sprint and Verizon speed tests are not mixed up LOL. I have Sprint and on Band 41, in California it I've never had it over 14mbps down.

Ha ha yeah I'm sure overall VZW is much more consistent and MUCH faster than sprint. Its only where sprint has their new LTE Plus that you see those kinds of speed tests
Also, I do travel internationally and am aware that many places do not yet have LTE, this thread is in no way ment as a slam to those ppl... It simply for those who do have LTE to show us how lucky they are!!
