So the Nexus 9 is supposed to have a 64 bit Tegra K1, anyone else find it anoying that the Shield wasnt released with this?
The Shield was released in July, looks like the Nexus 9 will be released in November. Maybe wasn't ready in time?
The nexus Won't be 64 bit.
It remains to be seen whether Nvidia's CPU architecture in the Denver is up to snuff, given they're using an architecture that hasn't really been successfully implemented in the past (in order compiling). I'd wait until devices with it are in users hands before feeling disappointed in the lack of the 64-bit K1 in our Shields.

Looks like I was wrong, but with only 2GB of RAM it is not going to be a noticeable improve over other K1 devices. Seems more like a beta test to me than an actually full 64bit use case.

how can something be half. its either 32 vs 64
But if you look at the newer apple products they are 64 and only have 1GB of RAM

The main point of using 64bit is to be able to properly take advantage of systems that have more than 4GB of RAM.
There are benefits to having a 64bit system besides that, but in all reality they will not even be notifiable on a machine with only 2GB of RAM.
Basically Giggle is using the Nexus 9 to pilot 64bit Android and allow devs to build apps for that new setup. And end user will not recognize the difference until there are phone/tablets/android laptops with more than 4GB of RAM.

Well rumors are just that. Google on their own page is touting 2 gb of ram so there's no difference there between that and the shield tablet. Supposedly the denver core K1 though will be an emulation MONSTER its an in order processor, but it is 7x superscalar. Since pretty much all emulation is single threaded the hope is that it will be able to run the dolphin emulator with decent framerates on a tablet. All in all i'm glad I chose the shield, at 399 for 32 gb and lte I think its a very competitive price. Sure the nexus 9 has a larger screen and higher resolution, but i like the 8" form factor i wouldn't be able to fit anything else in my pocket. We probably won't see a whole lot of apps that truly are optimized for 64 bit instruction set for a while, until it becomes the norm. Also the expandable memory and the stylus are pretty awesome. I do wonder though if Nvidia is going to make available Half-Life 2 and Portal to the nexus 9, IMO they'd be foolish not to. Also Gamestream and Shield Controller support is something that I think they should offer support for with all their OEMs that use thier SOC's but i really doubt that will happen.
RAM is not the main reason to use 64-bit processors. That's only one of many benefits.
However, the N9 will not have a great benefit. Currently there is more out there that supports Quad-Core more than it supports 64-bit. The architecture does offer multiple benefits, but it really won't help much currently.
Also to note, the N9 will be a DUAL-CORE K1. Nvidia calls it a "Dual Super Core", but when you break it down... It's a dual-core SoC.
Maybe in a year or two we might see some real world improvements that the N9 gets over the Shield Tablet, but currently they'll be nearly identical.
It offers 64-bit, but lacks a number of K1 benefits (as has been stated above). For the price and what you get, the Shield Tablet wins out any day over the N9.
Also, anyone that thinks the main reason for 64-bit is to be able to recognize 4+GB of RAM... Please do some research. There are SO MANY other, more important advances. RAM is only a small piece of a very large puzzle for 64-bit architecture.

It's true that the shield is built with a large magnesium heat plate designed by Nvidia for optimal heat displacement. I would guess they probably worked with HTC some too though.

With most new phones having 1 gig standard now, I see the new LG phone announced will be coming with a crazy 2 gig of ram. I'm no technical pro but isn't that a little overkill for a phone? I've never had an issue with 1 gig on my last few phones, and I know ram isn't all that expensive but it seems to be a marketing ploy to me.
anyway, other opinions or thoughts?

Creating a need is what todays mobile market is about. My point is who actually needs the full power of todays phones, a very small percentage i imagine
--<<<<<***>>>>>--
Would be better if they thought about creating faster 1GB RAM chips instead.
But imagine that you have quad-core 1.5GHz CPU and 8 GB of RAM. That would allow you to use full scale linux OS on your smartphone (I know it is possible now, but it's far from useable)
I'd be more impressed with ddr3 ram.

I would be happy if with increasing all dis horsepower manufactures can focus on increasing the battery backup also.
If MotoRazr Maxx can have 3300 mA battery...NOTE2 should have atleast 5000 mA
The 2GB would definitely be needed if they also increased the max number of tabs in the browser. That alone can eat my 1GB.

Full scale Linux runs perfectly well on much weaker systems. If you're talking about the Linux-on-Android project, the UI is not very responsive because it's not running natively, but through a painfully slow remote desktop thing. The actual processing that's happening behind the scenes is pretty quick and so it's still very useful.
Depends what you are doing.as to how much memory you need, etc.
Screen resolutions are getting bigger, cameras are higher res, etc. it all adds up to more data to hold on to and move around. Having an extra 0.5GB or 1GB can make a huge difference in some cases (e.g. Photo or video editing on-device.)
Also, Android puts apps to sleep rather than closing them down and releasing the resources by default (only properly disposing of them when more resources are required for a foreground app. Having extra RAM means more can be resident in memory without needing to dispose of anything so that could lead to a slicker UI experience and a phone that seems really fast and responsive.
The thing that disappointed me the most about the s3 was the ram, really ruined it for me. Phones today must have 1.5gb atleast.

Your build is very similar to my current one. The mobo, case, cpu, psu and ram will all be fine. But you will not be able to run two gpus on that system. It only has one pcie x16 slot and can only take one graphics card. You'd be better off getting something like a 6850 or gtx 550/560.

I would add that, as a general rule, if you don't do any video-editing or high-GPU intensive calculations (gaming is not one), a 2-cards setup is rarely worth it. You usually have a better deal by buying one high-end graphic card than 2-medium.
Of course, if you don't care about money, two 600$ cards will do wonders

I'm not a huge fan of the case, you'd be better off having the PSU at the bottom of the case, not up top like it looks like. Tom's Hardware has a great article about air cooling set-ups that really helped me plan my set-up.
I'd also go for one better GPU than two, like roninfight said. Look up cards and how they run BF3 at your resolution. BF3 is gpu-dependent from what I remember, so the CPU isn't such a big issue for that particular game, but can be for others like Skyrim. Dual GPU can lead to micro-stuttering and other issues, even with the top-of-the-line cards - so unless you have a compelling reason to need the processing power, it's not really worth bothering with.
If you're looking for a gaming machine, I'd look at Intel processors. Unless things have had a big shake-up in the AMD camp (which I wouldn't really guess since AMD has publicly announced they're going to focus on the mobile market instead of desktop - but maybe they had something in the line). For most of the games I was planning on playing, the testing done put Intel CPUs ahead on pretty much all of them. I don't have hardware loyalty
If you were going with that set-up, I'd question if the PSU was enough - also, I would check out if it has enough connectors for two GPU. I'd have to look at it in-depth, but it seems from a glance that you'd be cutting it close and might only support one card, but I didn't go track down the specs on it.

PSU needs to be at least 500w and i recommend you get a single gpu instead of sli. It really isn't worth the hassle unless your running three screens or 2560x1600 resolution.
Change PSU to corsair as they're much better and I'd suggest nvidia instead as nvidia drivers are still better than amd's at the moment.
I'd also change from the 8 core amd to a quad core intel. I have a 2500k and its brilliant. make sure u get 64 bit os aswell!

New nexus 10 user here. came from an htc flyer. Anyways, android assistant shows total ram on my device as 1.2gb or so. Specs say thing has 2gb. Does any ones else's device report that or is that the way android assitant reports it? I am just wondering if i have a new device with ram issues. Also, with not much running, this things shows available ram like my Vivid (about 300gb or so ) and it is supposed to have 2x the amount of Ram.
Thanks for any insight.

What your seeing is correct. The Nexus 10 has 2GB of RAM on the motherboard, but 800MB of it is reserved specifically for the GPU. I still think it's kind of cheap marketing, but meh.
Before 4.2.2, only close to 400MB was reserved for the GPU, but apparently you could go past that limit in some cases, and it would cause userspace RAM fragmentation.

Not cheap marketing, laptop manufacturers have been doing this for ages with integrated video cards. It's a little deceptive but it's the norm for this. I the Galaxy Nexus also did it. I am not certain but I don't think any mobile device has dedicated video ram, I believe it just is not reported as missing.
The Galaxy Nexus shows as having 893mb of ram.

I agree it's kind of normal, but it's how much is missing that still bothers me. The Galaxy Nexus is said to have 1GB of RAM, and if what you say is true, you're missing only a tiny bit over 100MB (which, is nothing imo). The Nexus 10 on the other hand is missing nearly half the advertised amount (not literally "missing" but not usable under normal conditions).
I'm pretty sure most laptop GPU's don't take "that" much RAM either when it's not dedicated (most I've seen was 512MB shared video memory, on laptops containing 4GB of RAM; very small amount really)

Ripped of? For around $400-$500, you're getting a device with extremely high resolution (highest in its class EVER), a 1.7 GHz CPU with up to 2.1 possible, a software and hardware support guarantee from Google, an extremely competitive GPU, and future-proofing with the latest Android versions for years to come.
That sounds like a pretty damn good deal to me. I know I've loved my N10.
If you're having issues with your device its likely a manufacturing fault, just return it to Google and get a new one.

Have you checked how much usable space you have after formatting a 1GB drive? The N10 delivers the specified HW but there is always overhead required to use it, no matter which OS you have. That is just a fact of computing. I would argue that you get to use ALL of the N10 hardware when you accurately account for the a running OS and apps.
Compared to Win8 RT, Android (Linux) is a skinny fashion model. Go look at the Win8 RT tablet specs then see how much usable HW is left after it boots up. Here is just one example.

It's tempting, VERY tempting, untill you take a look at this:
Intel Core i3, 64 GB storage and 4 GB of RAM—$799
Intel Core i5, 128 GB storage and 4 GB of RAM—$999
Intel Core i5, 256 GB storage and 8 GB of RAM—$1,299
Intel Core i7, 256 GB storage and 8 GB of RAM—$1,549
Intel Core i7, 512 GB storage and 8 GB of RAM—$1,949
I'd want the one I could use as a real PC, and I'd want to be able to play my Games on it. And for 1949, I'll just buy my own gaming laptop(i7 3.2Ghz, 2TB, 16GBRAM, GT740M 4GB) again and take that with me. (Size and weight are of no importance to me, what's 1.5kg on an average 40kg backpack?). And still have enough money left to buy a TabPro for portable entertainment purposes.
12.2" is not enough for my work usage (As a graphic designer I require at least 22").
Also, it runs a Intel HD 4400 integrated GPU. No way in hell am I paying 2000 quid for that nightmarish piece of rubbish! Running Photoshop CS6 on an Intel HD, as if! Also, as a serious Gamer (Skyrim, Mass Effect), it's useless.
Once it starts having serious Nvidia GPU's, I'll consider it. For now I'm more than happy with my NotePro.
The key consideration in question is the 800 quid model

Yeah i am probably getting it. I have the original Surface pro and needed a larger screen - i like it thinned down alittle and all the other refinements they did. If you are in the US looking for a good deal on the Note pro- PM me.

What kind of Android apps that do not have an equivalent or superior version under Windows or Mac OS? If that SP3 were running Mac OS, I would definitely trade in.

Android and iOS are great for consumption. Windows is great for productivity and business connectivity. Android fakes productivity better than Windows fakes consumption. Windows is Windows. With driver issues, desktop apps not designed for touch or an ultra HD display, and having to rely on a browser for a lot of things where apps aren't available. The SP3 changes none of that. My Note is a far better laptop supplement than the SP3 is a stand-alone tablet. My "laptop replacement" is still a laptop and Samsung's Pros and the SP3 haven't changed my thinking. What has changed is I can now leave my laptop and its bag full of paraphernalia at home 50% of the time because of the productivity and performance gains Samsung's introduced with the Pro's.
The second vignette in this commercial says it all...
P.S. - For those who handwriting is important, research N-trig. It's what MS is using in place of an active digitizer and Wacom which Samsung uses on the Notes. It's a pretty big compromise and I'll bet highly problematic on such a high-res display.

You have to give Samsung credit. In less than a minute they took out the iPad Air, Surface, Kindle, and iPad Mini.

Yeah if the note taking is expected to be better in Note pro 12, then I am sticking to it. mine is on the way. but microsoft made a fuss about their pen technology being really good with surface pro 3..

Good point. Though I'm still not convinced of the Windows 8.1 as a tablet interface. Android feels more comfortable for tablet use, and I can customize it quite a lot (Switchr + NotesMobile which I feel is the best note taking app, beats even OneNote though misses on the online sync).
So for extensive reading and writing(wacom!) Note Pro really is the best available. For more productive work I still can't forego windows, and that is on a laptop with a big screen (14+).
Maybe Windows 9 and Office 2015 can change my mind. But will wait and see.

I don't think SP3 is designed for game lover. It is a replacement for laptop. So it is very tempting for the people who have Note Pro or is considering Note Pro.

If it has to replace my laptop, it has to be game-capable. Particularly if it's 500 quid more expensive than my laptop.... (Yes, my laptop was 1300 euro.)
Because my laptop is used 70% of the time for gaming. (and the other 30% for Photoshop)
They can't give it a general tagline and after the fact say "Oh, but we didn't mean that..".
The thing is though that the need for portability and the power requirements of high performance gaming graphics chipsets compete against each other. Desktops always trump laptops in gaming and because the tablet form factor is expected to be smaller than laptops they will always be trumped by laptops.
As for development on this tablet hopefully it will come; in the meantime modifications using Xposed fill the void quite well.

2 grand for the one I would want, and stupid on board intel HD graphics? Going to have to pass on that. Zeesh.

Smart move I guess. Throw it in a different box and pretend it's new. Sounds like an htc stunt. This makes sense though, considering the battery issue with this model.

But as of now we are confirmed for marshmallow probably after the holidays, which is all I really care about. I gotta have that marshmallow!

Its technically still one of the best android tablets for CPU and GPU. I would of loved to have seen it with the Tegra X1 but with the tablet market not really strong, even apple is having issues with the market, I can understand not updating it.
It's truly seems to be one of the best performing tablets at this price point, i'am very interested in it vs Nexus 9, what would be your opinion? Only thing i'am concerned in is screen ratio, how good it is for e-book reading? And is there enough estate for general browsing? I own some pretty crappy Chinese 10" Onda tablet and looking for an upgrade. Though i don't know if i would use Shields gaming environment to the max.

As long as you know how to change the system DPI to 240 then its great, I personally hate the stock DPI that they put on it, with the stock DPI it literally just feels like an enlarged phone. But as soon as you change it to 240 then its great.

I use mine for reading books, specifically pdf books of networking materials, and it works really well for that. The screen is amazing for comics. The tablet is a gaming beast and not much can touch its gpu capabilities. Admittedly, I don't do much gaming but I did do a playthrough of ff9 with ePSXe without a HITCH. It's without a doubt a gaming beast when it comes to android devices.
A small comparison lists of the things that are different between Nexus 9 and Shield Tablet:
Nexus 9 vs Shield Tablet
Screen
Nexus: 8.9in, 2048x1536
Shield Tablet: 8in, 1920x1200
Expandable storage
Nexus: None
Shield Tablet: up to 128gb microsd card
Cpu:
Nexus: 64 bit
Shield tablet: 32 bit
GPU:
Same
Ram:
Same
Speakers:
Shield tablet wins hands down
Android updates:
Nexus still has at least 2 more years of android updates
Shield Tablet is getting marshmallow for sure but the next one after is more than likely but not guaranteed.
Fair warning though:
The custom roms on this device have audio issues that happen randomly and it can be annoying. I haven't found a rom that don't have this issue, some are worst than others. There hasn't been a solution to it either from what I've seen.
miss message
The nexus 9 has a better resolution, 2048x1536 vs the 1920x1200 on the shield. The CPUs are a 64bit 2.3Ghz dual core on the N9 and a 32bit 2.2 Quad on the ST. I haven't used an N9 so I can't really add anymore than that.
The shield has an SD card slot, front facing speakers, and wide screen. I read ebooks all the time on the shield and think it's perfect for that. The nexus might get slightly better battery life, but not much more. I was deciding between the two and picked the shield because with the thinner screen I can type very well with my thumbs. My 10.1 tablet is just too big to type on. I imagine with the wider screen the nexus would have that same problem. I would buy the shield for 300 bucks right now if I didn't own one so at 200 it's a steal.

And what about x32 vs x64 on Nexus, though dual core? What is the future of it? Is it possible that at some point after a year Nexus will have better performance because of x64?
Probably when all tablet and smartphone are x64...they, maybe, developera start to create app that take advantage of x64 CPU...
But there is the possibility that they start to use gpgpu even on smartphone and this is an advantage for tegra hardware
Nobody knows...
Yeah it's hard to say. But at 200 bucks the shield blows away anything in its price range. And I much prefer the wide screen and front facing speakers. I spent a lot of time debating the nexus and the shield in my head and I just didn't want a 4:3 and I really wanted an SD card slot.

They're equal for multicore performance but the single core performance is much stronger with the 64bit variant. In everyday use, you won't notice it.

Thats the thing, most of the users of this tablet use it for gaming. Its a shame the new tablet doesn't have 64bit, but at least it is worth the price.
According to this benchmarks seems like if i would not care about Shield PC streaming or exclusive game in pure performance Nexus is doing better? As i see single core almost 2x better and this would be utilized most in applications not optimized for multi-core? And multi-core is around the same level...
But maybe Marshmallow on Shield could bring another results.
I wait for Shield Tablet 2
Had both, but sold the N9 some weeks ago. My problem with it was, i play a lot WOT Blitz and on the Nexus with max graphics the fps drops from 60 to between 50 and 35 after some minutes of gaming. But the Shield Tab stays most of the time on 60fps and if it drops its still between 50-60 fps and this with maxed out Graphics!

Nexus 9 put more pressure on GPU with higher screen resolution and use a dual core CPU
Anyone who has the K1 can you answer some questions for me?
Does your bottom speaker move? i noticed earlier that I can make it click by pressing on it lightly :S also is there only 1 speaker behind each grill? the speaker on the top I can feel the vibration of how loud it is but the bottom one I can't.
Think it's faulty but that's why i'm asking.
