There is no image or source for it yet on the Galaxy Nexus they demoed it on and you want to know about porting it to an obsolete phone with a completely different set of specs? Good luck...

apparently I am not allowed to post links, but google "zdnet ubuntu phone 5 things" will fill you in on what we know so far. Follow the first link.
what I know personally, Ubuntu tries to keep new deployments as quiet as possible but relies on an open source dynamic for development. If you have a high end Android phone, there is a good chance you will be needed (unofficially) for the initial builds. Anyone with a dual core android phone packing 1gb ram will be (unofficially) included in the "beta" testing phase.
Essentially, if you can compile it yourself, you are guaranteed a front row seat. If you cant, but pay attention, you will still be on board.

You think ubuntu cares about if they have a nexus? no. they care about specs alone. Quit thinking your important, do some research. we are all excited about this, get some info or shut up.

Canonical has detailed the system requirements for smartphones running Ubuntu. The “entry level” Ubuntu device is expected to run a 1GHz Cortex A9 processor, 512MB – 1GB of RAM, 4-8GB eMMC + SD, and a multi-touch display. The high-end Ubuntu “superphone” calls for a Quad-core A9 or Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM minimum, multitouch, and desktop convergence. The desktop convergence part certainly sounds interesting, as Canonical called it a “a full PC desktop accessible just by docking the device to a monitor and keyboard.”

I've got an n7000, and am keen to work on a port when the source code hits. Never done it before though, and am keen for some advice.
After the source code hits, what's the best place to go to learn about porting the code to our n7000?
I appreciate any advice you have, particularly with any links. I'm familiar with the linux commandline, file system structure, flashing my phone, ubuntu servers and desktop Ubuntu in general. Haven't played around with compiling kernels much before, but happy to start. Am running Ubuntu 12.04 on an XPS 13 ultrabook for my dev machine.
Cheers!

Now people will find out why Samsung is such a ***** to work with. Android was a different ballgame cause there where plenty of devs working on Exynos based SoC devices and things could be patched up relatively quick. No documentation for Exynos is gonna rear it's ugly head this time. TI OMAP was the most dev friendly SoC out there and Qualcomm is workable too. Tegra and Exynos are garbage

Its honest though. To get it working properly may well be impossible. Its part of the reason cyanogen still doesn't support mhl on Samsung's. Also its a little early to ask for advice on porting when no one has experience with this code yet. Sorry to pee on your cornflakes, give it a week and we'll all know more.

Could you give me more information? Thanks

Seems you can try it out on the GN/N4 at 21/2 and i will for sure try it out on my nexus.
But would love later on to have it on my Note2 with the vig screen..

I'd like to see Ubuntu on the Note 2 as well, in the future.
If it's not too much to ask, I'd like to tri-boot my Note 2 with Android, Windows Phone and Ubuntu.

Source code is out and the porting guide will be out tomorrow. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting
It's based on the AOSP android Kernel and drivers. So porting it for the Note should be pretty easy. They went with the same approach as Firefox did. I might even give this a try myself.
For anyone else that will attempting this port or that of Firefox os , build against Cyanogen source and not the Samsung one.
It is actually based on Cyanogen mod and not AOSP.

agreed; you need a lot of testers to discover the non-critical bugs and fix them; what better way to do it than to release is into the world and wait for feedback

Actually, you missed one possibility. If you're installing this on a "sandbox" with the known intention that it won't be for long, go to town. If you're considering installing for daily use without having to start over later.... yeah, you probably want to wait.
Hence why I put 8.1 on the build box and 7 Ultimate on the new "family" box... for now.

Note that the reply wasn't aimed towards you.
But to answer legitimate or not. Some people do have it legitimately, RTM is given to quite a few people legitimately early (not just manufacturers, several of the library computers at my university have it via microsoft directly). The copy these guys are using, not so legitimate.
RTM is what you'll see available to the public very soon. It's no different to the retail version.

I have legit access. I haven't bothered, turns out the university can give people copies of 8.1 pro (although that probably comes under MSDN). I'm perfectly happy with 8.0, see little improvement for me in 8.1 (I have no desire to see the start button back), I'll probably just wait a few weeks and get it via windows update.

It may be Dreamspark, and you may be entitled to a heck of a lot more software if so! Depending on what a university agrees to it could include Visual Studio, Office, etc. Worth finding out for sure.

I have dreamspark already, mine doesn't have Windows 8 or office in it though. Does have visual studio and windows server 2012 though, must try out the latter (already use visual studio heavily). Mine wasn't university issued though, havent been in a rush to check that out with uni as I have windows 8 and don't use ms office (use libre office instead, ms office is better overall but libre does the job fine), I will check it out eventually though.
Quick question. If I install the preview today, well I still be able to install the real thing on Thursday? I'm bored and feel like playing around.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk
If you install the preview then you can't update to 8.1. You would need to do a full install.

I thought they had changed it so you could do, so many mixed messages
Personally I'm already running the RTM that was leaked a while back so makes no odds to me, I'll just grab the official ISO's when they land and add them to my ISO store and carry on as I am currently.
That's for RT... it's possible via a bit of a hack on x86, but I can't recommend it.
So I'm getting an"autorun.dll could not be loaded" error message when trying to install the preview. Anyone know how to fix it?

That's the only case I can think where it would try to use Autorun.
Try booting instead straight to USB/CD and installing that way.

I can confirm that the unlock is real.
It should be noted that users should NEVER EVER get or take another update from Amazon. This usually involves an upgrade to the "aboot" partition which will IMMEDIATELY RELOCK the device.
Once the device is unlocked several key changes take place in the functionality:
- The device no longer checks for signatures on recovery or boot images. This would allow for custom recovery and the potential for full AOSP ROMs.
- If powered on with both volume buttons pressed, fastboot mode is started for easier recovery of the device.
The unlock, may only apply to certain versions of the OS (*.3.2.1 etc). Some tests for downgrading and then running the exploit need to happen over the weekend and I'm sure that's why you don't see this released yet.
Also, there is probably going to be a fee to unlock, that's a new business model for devs to still make some money off unlock exploits while keeping that exploit from being patched by the OEMs.

I will gladly pay a nominal fee.
FireOS is pretty crappy once you actually start using the device with google play store... Apps (mostly games) constantly crash due to memory issues that i know are because of the OS. How can my HTC One M7 have ~ 900MB ram available at idle when the HDX has ~300 at idle... No phone services are even running? Oh wait, all the crap amazon services are and are so tied in with the OS they are basically impossible to stop/remove without bricking the device...
I can't wait for un-locked boot loader and some real android.... :victory:
