Towelroot website compromised? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone have a copy of Towelroot v3? The website has been compromised and makes chrome go nuts by adding new tab after new tab and its hard to stop it.

not for me it doesn't... sounds like you have a virus or malware.

Did the same thing for me was at 60 tabs before I got it stopped. On mobile

I uninstalled chrome updates and I was able to download Towelroot. Something screwed up on chrome updates I guess (or like was mentioned, maybe it wasn't a real update but a malware). Mine was mobile also.

Uninstall of Chrome didn't work

I tried uninstalling Chrome updates and it still didn't work for me. Just caught up with in progress and then finally saying failed. Thanks Samsung. I really wish they would let people have freedom for their phones. If anyone knows of something else to do, please let me know.

Probably the security flaw fix they were talking about.
is this the one that has been on the market for the last two weeks or is it a update. I avoided the last one due to slow downs but want to see if this fixes it.
Nice catch - thanks!
does hulu work on it?
One thing that I notice was that Dolphin needed to updated. Now the flash loads on the pages automatically with out me pressing the button to load them. I know I could have set this up when installing or even the settings for Dolphin. Besides that, its running very smoothly. It seem to of fix a lag issue if anybody else has had that problem

Hulu will probably never work out of the box. It's up to hulu to support/license/whatever mobile viewing; and with hulu plus, it will probably never happen for free.
I'm not seeing the update :-\ Anyone else not seeing it?

i don't really visit hulu but why doesn't it work? Just use opera mini or skyfire or something of the sort. If not change the useragent to display firefox in webkit. This way the desktop version of the site loads and it should work. But then again idk anything about hulu and why it doesnt work.
I downloaded it today. Here's the apk to push through adb.

Neither of those work. Hulu doesn't allow mobile viewing and will check thoroughly either via the browser of through the version of the flash plugin you use.
I got it! It updates the current flash but doesn't show up as an update in the market.
Hmm. I wonder if we need Player V 10.1.95.1?
Adobe says the security vulnerability-in Android-is limited to v 10.1.92.10.
My EVO currently has V 10.1.72.7 (probably since the HTC/Sprint Froyo/Android 2.2 update). Apparently 10.1.72.7 doesn't have the vulnerability.
And idk the dif between 10.1.72.7 and 10.1.92.10 (or 10.1.95.1). Hate to fix what isn't broken (especially if i can't get the old one back).

I would say to just keep the one you have already. I didn't see any additional functionality from this new update atleast from my use. The file is way too big for something we already have that only takes 52.00kb. I also notice it slows down the page load times with fresh 3.2.0.0. Uninstalled...

Mobile security on smart phones (ANDROID)

anyone know much about the sercurity on the phone?
recently i read about this new free security app called on NQ mobile.
http://www.redmondpie.com/nq-mobile...st-solution-against-malware-viruses-and-more/
i installed it and noticed that it really drains the battery (seems like if toggles apps that aren't even opened into its memory). so it got me thinking .. is it really worth it to install apps like these for anti-virus's, maleware, etc.. ?
did a search and it seems the top three as of March 20th are:
Kaspersky Mobile Security (not free)
Lookout Security & Antivirus (free)
F-Secure Mobile Security (more for parental control)
not too sure where NQ would fit into the picture since the article came out on april 11th.
anyhow anyone with any idea such programs on the android is worth the draw back on power consumption and security risk please comment!
thanks.
IMO I don't think there is an antivirus app out there that would serve its purpose... It's more common sense... There's a good reason why when you try to download non market apps that you have to read that little disclaimer and check the box to allow them to install... Know what the apps do, if it doesn't need a permission or if you dont think it needs a permission then don't install it...

Very good advice. Also, keep really sensetive stuff to a minimum. If you can bank on your computer, do it.
I just flash another ROM every couple of days and get my apps from the market. Lol

so basically in, layman's terms, these so called "security" apps dont do squat?
and you should just keep personal and secured stuff off these devices and perhaps use a laptop to access key information (like banking and emails)?
I am not sure what you mean when you refer to some apps as non-market apps. think all the security apps i mentioned are available through the android market (aka Play Store).
Not the security apps. By non-market apps we mean any apk's installed that you get any place but the play store.

No, they do behind the scene stuff. Lookout scans ALL your apps, just to check for anything malicious. Lookout has some kind of backup, but I never use it. When I bought my myTouch, my T-Mobile rep installed about 5 must have apps on my phone, and Lookout was #1 on his list. I've been using it on every ROM I've had. Hope this helps!
EDIT: You can get apks from the internet. Specifically pirated apps. People do not want to pay for the app, so they download it online. But people could have modified that apk and but a virus or who knows what in that apk. So it's best to keep an anti virus app. Lookout scans a new app each time I install/update it.

Cool.. so now the questions is which security app is better.. Lookout or this NQ one.. ill go ahead and try lookout and see how much battery drain i get.
i dont download any apks outside of the market. but i hear there were a few places that had pirated apks but i guess i never trusted them (blackmarket). its not like Cydia for the iOS, where the apps are safely cracked.. atleast i think they are. so with a security app i guess it would alert you if the apk is corrupt - nice.
Thanks again.

I used lookout for a little while, but then I realized that I only need it if I'm careless, which I'm not.

The reason why they don't much is because there not meant for this kind of system... Android unique system is a little well very complex to make a antivirus app or that would find malware... There are so many ways around it...

Okay, so, I am still on CM 10 (STILL Android 4.1.2)
I side-loaded the Starbucks APK 2.2.3 (the newest, as of this posting) and it seems to work fine.
HOWEVER, the Play Store shows that it is installed, but still gives me a warning that the app is not compatible with my phone. Doesn't show the normal buttons for Uninstalling or Opening, so I'm assuming it won't Update as normal, either.
Side note: all other apps have seemed to work perfectly on my copy of this build, including Groupon and a side-load of Google Wallet. Not sure what the deal is.

Applications are cryptographically signed. The idea is that another software house or or anybody else can't come up with an "update" to that app, as the signature will be different.
The exploit allows exactly that to happen.
Lets say you download Google maps v7 from the internet because you're impatient, and you install it over the top of the existing one. In theory, if it succeeds, it must have come from Google and hasn't been tampered with to install a Trojan or virus or whatever.
With this exploit, the apk can be modified whilst retaining the same signature. Basically you can't trust downloads that didn't come from the play store until the exploit is patched.

That's funny, because the app store is littered with adware and malware. Just a few days ago, there was an app in the top 20 that was clearly malware, and it remained there for weeks before (presumably) being pulled off. As a general rule, I don't download any apps that require the "run at startup" or "install shortcuts" permissions, unless I fully trust the developer. By the way, there's an easy solution; Google could let us control our own privacy settings (like every other OS on the market), but then again, that would eat into their bottom line After all, Google's business model is to literally steal user data and sell it to others.

It's easy to put malicious apps on the play store since there's no review process like apple, but things tend to get flagged quickly.
Basically don't install a calculator app that has full phone/internet/device permissions
The android security model is actually quite good IMO, there's been some exploits but everybody has them (not just android) and they get patched relatively quickly. Potential exploits aside it's actually quite good.

You're kidding yourself if you think Apple or Microsoft isn't collecting as much data about you as they can and doing what they want with it. Beyond that, I always take point with folks who accuse any company of "stealing your information." They're not. You're freely giving them access to it (as outlined in that Terms of Service/ELEU agreement you don't read) to utilize their services. If you don't want them to have your info, then don't share your info with them.

Halfway true. It's more difficult than you think to get malicious apps on the Play store. Most of the "successful" attacks have been from someone uploading the 1.0 version of their app(which is perfectly clean, and passes inspection by Google Bouncer) then pushes an update to it with some of the malicious code. As you noted, it usually gets flagged and removed at this point. The other way I've heard of people getting "infected" from apps off the Play store is when the author ties their ads into a nasty website, tricks the user into clicking on it, then further tricks them into downloading an unsigned/untrusted APK.
Yup, as long as your not doing some silly things like getting you apps from the Pirate Bay or Joes crazy world of underground apps you will be more or less safe.

I hate this ****. Whatever it is is deeply embedded in my phone. I notice that when I do a wipe in recovery my data partition doesn't mount. Can you tell me if yours does please? You don't have to wipe anything just see if you can mount and unmount the data partition. Mine says unmounted and will not mount at all. I think this might be part of the problem. The data wipe doesn't really happen, and this Keyboard is in that part that isn't getting wiped. That is the only thing I can think on how it keeps coming back no matter what I do. PIT files and numerous firmwares, and nothing removes it permanently. If you could tell me if yours mounts...That would help me a lot. Thanks

I have it. On triforce. Figured it's a google bug or a remnant from a 4.3 "funflash"

I talked with Samsung. They said it is not a legit Samsung app and it was never rolled out to any S4 OTA or included in any OEM firmware. I think I know where it came from. Did you ever flash firmware from Galaxys4root.com? That is just a hunch of mine. May not be the source at all. But after I flashed that firmware I noticed lots of extra b.s. going on and found it. It shows on my phone, but not when I look at my play orders on my computer. Samsung said it's not really linked to Google play at all. That is why you can't leave a review or report the app. Try that and you'll see. The creator was cleaver enough to give it the appearance of a legit Google apps so that it will install on your phone without being blocked. Have you ever looked on your device for it? I can't find anything and my appnotifier and lookout never pick it up. It just magically appears once I root or allow install of apps from unknown sources.
Can anyone tell me if maybe my SIM card needs to be changed? Like is it possible that this Note 3 Keyboard keeps coming back because of the personal information or MEID contained on my phone? LIke, I did a full reflash with PIT files, and pulled the battery and did a factory reset from recovery before I let it boot. It still came back after about a day with no updates at all.
Would some of you more skilled people give me some ideas to try and maybe explain or suggest how this can be happening? Like is it possible that a new partition has been created that does not get rewritten with PIT file and firmware? Please... I want this **** off my phone! Any suggestions are gonna be appreciated and tested. I know somebody has an idea of what is happening here....Thanks for reading this.
Ever find the answer to this?

All I know is that I talked to Samsung via live chat and they said that it is not affiliated with Samsung in any way and a Note 3 keyboard should not be on any Galaxy S4. Go to live chat yourselves and ask questions. Sprint told me that I can get a new one on my warranty but there is a $50 surcharge. The Tech at sprint said it's not affiliated with Google play. It just has some of the API's to trick the phone into letting it install. I don't kow for sure where it came from. I've flashed so many ROM's and firmwares that it is impossible to pinpoint it. I got a feeling that a lot of people will find it if they look for it. At least the ones that are flashers will anyways.
I've tried deleting everything but when the new ROM loads and I look through the files, I'm still finding folders and files with week old dates on them. I'm not sure how that is happening. I'm dying to get to the bottom of this. Help me keep this thread bumped so more people will see it. Hopefully someone will give us the right info to get rid of it.
I see the same thing I'm on stock.

I would say they are full of it. That app is from Samsung. I have a friend with a Note 3 and it updated itself using that app. Now why it is showing on the S4 is probably just some glitch in there programming, or because they are working on a 4.3 update for the S4. I also have it on mine. Once the new update comes out for the S4 I suspect it will have the new keyboard and the app will then work.
Delete the Samsung keyboard lol. I did.
Well I went to the mall yesterday and a friend of mine has a note 3 and he has that keyboard as well, also the link on the playstore takes you to the korean or japanese samsung website. I am beggining to think is just a glitch. I also have the stock samsung keyboard removed and use swiftkey.

I'm certain that somebody has exploited the keyboard. It wasn't on my phone when it was stock unrooted right from the store. It only showed up after flashing back to "stock" firmware. In which one instance I was seeing lots of bogus crap going on. Apps where getting flashed right over the top of the little green android. In the applications manager you could see the little green Android behind numerous app icons. They all had a little something extra. My phone was doing all sorts of neat crap on it's own. Somebody had complete control of my device. That came from galaxys4root.com Flash that **** and you'll see for yourself. Everything was tainted. The play store, the play services It was like it was in a war, it would have two updates for the same thing showing in pull down notification window. One real, one bogus. The first time I flashed it, I just hit updtae on everything. When I noticed all the funny stuff, I re-flashed it and paid attention to all the updates. All of the Samsung apps were tainted, It would go back and forth updating and then updating back to the other. Thats what made me notice the differences. It kept updating the same apps over and over. That is when I noticed that they were different.

I did. It still shows as installed. I cut everything out. Even everything that had input devices in the name. It still shows as installed. When I factory reset it is not there for anywhere from 12 hours to 24 hours. My phone is fast as hell, scrolls like a champ and the battery lasts all day on one charge. Like 16 to 18 hours. As soon as that keyboard shows up it slows down, acts funny and gets laggy. The battery is disappearing like crazy. I have to charge it twice a day to make it till I get home. It might be a legit app for many, but I'm positive that someone has exploited the app and is using it in firmware as a information collector, and it does not go away no matter what I do. I'm wondering if it is in my efs partition... if that is even possible. What I know is that with Android, almost anything is possible. If you can think it, someone can code it.
