So we've have some devs recently that have either announced that they are stopping/slowing down support or have gone entirely... Anyone feel like this is the beginning of the end for our beloved X10?
This is the list so far:
1. Zdzihu (has slowed down support for his roms and haven't seen any activity from him in over 2 weeks)
2. Cobrato (has stopped development on his MIUI rom)
3. TripNraver (Has also stopped development on all his roms due to personal reasons)
4. Achotjan (has announced that he will be slowing down support as he will be/is a student)
5. Jerpelea (havent seen anything from him in awhile (or is he a part of the freeXperia team?)
*EDIT* Heard that he changed his name to FXP and is still very much active!
6. Rdannar (gone because his phone is broke)
7. Z!GZA!G (new and promising dev but phone broke as well )
We still have very active support from Wolfbreak, nasif619, spaarc and Erickwill in terms of roms and also from Doomlord, Thjap and Azuzu for their kernels and tweaks as well as some releases from other newcomers but I cant help but feel like we're in a bit of trouble...
Anybody else that I'm missing or didn't give credit to? let me know and I'll update the list.. Maybe we can come up with some way to get some devs back on out device or have more development going
unfortunately this is the circle of life.
Support goes to the new generation of devices.Just get over it.
We have more than we imagined when we bought x10.

1. Z is around, don't worry. Hopefully he's busy with providing a bootloader unlock (just dreamin' ) He never posted that much, just compare his post count with what he achieved for our x10. He's not someone who just talks and promises a lot, but when he's posting you can be almost sure that it's either a fix or a major breakthrough that is already prepared for public release
2. Cobrato said he won't continue developing MIUI ROMs because it's a lot of worked without sources (MIUI sources are not released to public). As far as I know he didn't say, he doesn't develop anymore. So let's see what'll come from him
3. Trip left xda by his own choice. If he also stopped dev'ing on modaco, that's sad, but personal reasons are more important than development. Btw. wasn't he planning to dev for the Sensation? Didn't see a single ROM from him there.
4. Achotjan slows own, right. That doesn't mean he's gone.
5. Jp - are you talking about Jerpelea? If so you must be kidding. He's the heart of the FreeXperia team, developing for all Xperia phones atm (X10/mini/pro, Arc, Play, mini/pro from 2011, ...). Recently he changed his name to FXP (FreeXPeria?) so don't get confused.
6. rdannar & Z!GZA!G: didn't know that. It's really a pitty. I hope they'll be back with new or repaired phones
Good to know that Z and FXP are still doing their thing! I'm a bit of a flashaholic so I get real sad when I dont see updates for a couple days... but you're right... it is the cycle of life and it will happen sooner or later.
Hopefully if bootloader gets unlocked, it will bring back a lot of dev activity
I doubt there is enough interest to unlock the bootloader now.
oddly enough we're at a weird point right now....
older phones are so old they are losing dev support, and also there are so many good newer phones that are so new causing them to have little dev support lol

that's exactly what I was thinking. And without a unlocked bootloader, there isn't much more the devs can do now anyways.

OO yeah!!
+1
Well devs are humans they have other things to do..
I feel that we already got too much support from developers on our X10 and even though things have naturally slowed down, there is still some notable activity.
And maybe it's time for normal users like us to read and research and make our own progress! Will be fun!

I really think that the devs have done an amazing job with this phone, such so that I see no incentives in upgrading my phone to a newer model.. However is there really much more they can do? The only two things I see as missing from the software side is lack of a fully unlocked bootloader and the 16 million colour screen! But there's no real need for an unlocked bootloader and the 16 million colours is only going to happen if SE release source codes..
So really I feel that we've been lucky to have such amazing dev support for the last year. They've pushed this phone to its limits and without them what would we do!
All I can say is that they've done a great job and I hope to see some more of their work down the line!

what is 3x kernel?
Yes, I'm afraid. The dev support for this phone is slowly diminishing. It's sad because they have achieved so much with this phone. At the same time, what else is there to do with this phone that hasn't been done already, or that doesn't need an unlocked bootloader. Hopefully Z comes out with some good news about the bootloader soon, that should keep people here a bit longer.
I hope that one or two devs stay till the end, I came in late in the game so I'm stuck with this phone on a contract until March 2013! D:
That being said, I do love this phone. It's not only my first smartphone, but it's my first ever phone. It has a strange sentimental value to me
Just my too sense.
its the kernel from when we got the gingerbread update. the custom kernel we have is based on the older kernel but our devs have fixed so it works on gingerbread

I had an Arc for 1 month, I really liked it but I couldn't live without a variety of custom roms
I am now on Sensation and thinking about the Xperia S (sorry no proper section yet),this upcoming phone is totally awesome in both look and features, BUT I am afraid XDA devs will not be interested again...
Though I think the only way to make it sexy for them is that:
-Sony send a free device(s) to known devs team like CM,Virtuous,MIUI,Modaco...
If you have other ideas then throw them here
Sony gave Arc and Arc S to CM devs, so don't complain
Developement is harder on SE devices than on for example on HTC decices from what I've heard - that's the reason why we don't have that much devs
Sent from my iPad 2 using Tapatalk
Sony Ericsson always used quite a lot of special hardware, especially when it comes to camera sensors. It's always been a challenge for developers to get those to work on custom roms.
The problem in 2011 is that there was too much time between the hardware release and the availability of certain sources and the bootloader unlock.
If they make sure the Xperia S can be unlocked right away and the sources are available fast then we might get a lot of development going on.
Then again, Sony doesn't care that much, the vast majority of users doesn't even root, so they focus mainly on the stock ROMs. And they are the best of all stock ROMs. By far. And the default software on the 2012 looks to be extremely good and complete.

Imo, they totally do.
You could check this e.g.
IMO SE has tried all hard to support XDA in terms of development let's hope under Sony's management they do the same.
Best way to make them interested is to buy them one with donations.
Never fails!

It's very hard to turn a hTC dev into a Sony one, though a samsung one is easy because whatever galaxy series are good they lack the higher grade materials used by Sony, specially Xperia S which look like a portable Bravia tv
The X10 gave a bad taste to xda devs, the Arc was not well liked too because it wasn't dual core, but now the xperia S with it's very good CPU,12mp camera and HD screen should be perfect!
They just have to promote it better in advertisements inside xda and other forums adv spaces, the Google Nexus Prime is very well advertised for exemple, there is a remarquable ''push'' marketing

I think, they really do.
Afaik there are already two XDA members from Sony.
And btw, SE/Sony was the first manufacturer, who gave the community a official way to unlock the BL of devices (now HTC does the same).
Once they released camera libs to FXP team.
They even released a ICS alpha for XDA devs.
I haven't seen another manufacturer doing something like that.
(correct me if I'm wrong at some point)
So why the custom roms on Arc are so poor?
I was expecting 10x more specially that it was unlocked way before Sensation (I was here).
I hope sgs3 will not flame devs again and forget about xperia S

I think it's because most of the developers was behind Dual core devices like HTC Sensation, Samsung etc. but we are making progress we have a great team of dedicated developers like FreeXperia Team. Now our device is under official CM chart. We have most popular custom ROMs like MIUI, CM and few stock based ROM. Lot of the other custom ROM's I have seen are most based on CM so doesn't make much difference. The exceptions are Oxygen, SuperOSR etc. Those developers are active with Nexus devices.
Unlike other devices Sony is little hard to develop due to heavy customization and hardware. Compared to other manufactures Sony has only few customers. HTC users stay with HTC, Samsung users stays with Samsung devices and upgrade to newer Samsung model but they hardly change from HTC to Samsung etc. So it will take time. I'm guessing by Xperia S release we might see few more developers because now we have more advance hardware people might consider upgrading to Sony. But I'm happy with the development what we have now.
i already love the Xperia S
will surely be buying it....
though i dont mind if the community donates a Xperia ION/Xperia S
i dont think no. of custom ROMs is really something to worry about...
we dont need half baked ROMs which are all basically stock ROMs just with some apps removed/added and few "cosmetic" changes... i have seen may communities which have TONS of roms which are hardly 2% different from stock ROM... thats not going to help... just a few well supported and developed ROMs is all that is needed... oh and dont forget powerful kernels as however good a ROM is it cant fully use the power of the device unless u have excellent kernels...
as for general developer interest... HTC & Samsung devices are most loved by devs because of the open nature of the vendors... also both of these vendors have a HUGE user base... some developers prefer to work only on devices which are widely used...

Based on my experience with LG Optimus 2x with unlocked and standard bootloader, it is very easy to bring back brick Optimus 2x by using nvflash/smartflash way. I can mess with partition size without worry about non bootable android device.
And now, android development in Optimus 2x getting rise, many new ROMs get published..
If Sony gives those flexibility with their phone(not to worry about brick phone as long it is related with software), I believe we can really mess with Sony Xperia S
Cheers

I agree with DoomLoRD its better to have quality over quantity. Few ROMs but stable, fast, and beautiful instead of bunch of ROMs that hardly have difference from the STOCK one or improve nothing its pointless.
I don't agree with samsung actual users being loyal to the brand, most of sgs2 users are freshly converted people from symbian/bb/iphone to Android. They wanted the best specs from the beginning, though they are a little deceived by the poor plastic and design.SE Arc lacked the dual core and was sold at a high price which made people buy sgs2 instead, the Xperia S packs very good specs(12mp,dual core),superb design and appareantly nice materials!
So unless the sgs3 features quad-core cpu and also 12mp there are big chances to have people switching from sammy to Sony this time.
HTC fans are very loyal to HTC because of the Sense roms and super high quality aluminium materials, but some dudes like me who were SE fans in the past...we can come back to Sony again
Why should SGS II people switch to the Sony Xperia S?!
They should offer the same performance or SGS II should be faster due Exynos.

Can't people just be happy that support for this phone has not been dropped (yet), instead of complaining about timescales for release of the promised updates?
I thought people on these forums are a little more in the know than most places and would realise that it's not a fast process to prepare, test and release an update that isn't completely broken/full of bugs.
I guess I was wrong lol.

The developers here do a fantastic job and I have massive respect for everything they do for the modding/Android community. Several devices of mine have had their useful lives extended greatly because of people on XDA.
However, they are not under the same constraints as the devs that work for Sony.
Sony's devs will be under strict developmental, testing and qa constraints and cannot release updates with bugs and rely on people providing bug reports/logcats to fix said bugs after the fact. They have to release software with all features working and with minimal bugs.
Not to mention all the red tape/paperwork they no doubt have to deal with and the other devices that all need maintaining. I would also imagine that the budget for maintaining older devices is dwarfed by the budget for new devices.
It's also worth noting that a lot of the devs good work on XDA is only possible because of blobs/binaries provided by Sony's devs in the first place.
Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk
Sony releases an update with a camera app that takes 4 sec to open and everyone loses sleep over it while some1 here releases an update with wifi issues, screen on delays etc, they get praise for the device bring up which gets labeled as 1st release. lol
Obviously Sony cant depend on rapid development and recoveries and backups and all the fancy stuff we do when we get into issues when it relates to the average android user who by the phone and occasionally plug it in for PC companion to update and that's it. When wifi stops working no one is gonna say " oh this is a first release. They will fix it soon". People take back the devices and swap brands like that. Consumers are a fickle bunch.
Also as I have always said to myself , AOSP is the most barebones and feature lacking kind of experience out there. Android has matured a lot since the froyo gingerbread days and so have the OEM modifications. The reason I decided on the XZ against the N4. I am one willing to sacrifice smoothness for functionality any day. My Z is still stock and I will probably keep it that way til the EOL is reached. I came from the LG O2x which got ICS in December/January so trust me when is say I can wait lol.

Overall Performance seems better on KK. The difference between ART and dalvik is pretty big in some apps aswell. 4.3 brings trim.
The camera however ... Not so sure about that. I doubt they will even update the camera stuff. Why bother spending time and money optimizing an old flagships camera when people can just buy the New flagship with a camera that is advertised to be incredible? That's how a big company works. Time is money. Sad reality.

Right I know it's too early to guess regarding the development of the Z2, but I checked out the Z1 subforum, and I'm unimpressed to be honest.
The Z1 was released September 2013. The HTC M8 was released April this year. The M8 is fast approaching the number of threads/kernels/ROMS.
Why are the Sony devices being left behind? I'm still waiting for my Z2, but I have something in the back of mind telling me the M8 will excel with development and stay updated/refreshed longer.
Any thoughts?
I have an M8 and a Z1 - awaiting my preorder of the Z2.
I'm actually selling the m8 as I actually prefer the Z1 over it. For me I much prefer look and feel and to be fair the only thing that I feel I will miss will be the gestures etc. However I believe some of those will be on the Z2 so no biggie.
The other is the screen as the z1 is inferior in that dept. But most important for me the Z1 pisses all over the M8 camera everyday.
So for me development or not I'm happy with stock and the far superior camera (like I said that is very important to me).
Can't wait to get my Z2.
Sent from my C6903 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
This is something I am worried about too. Doesnt look like many developers / cooks are going for sony devices. M8 and S5 forums are already brimming with kernels / mods / roms (I know z2 is yet to be released worldwide) but there is only a very limited amount available even for z1.
Part fun of being in this community is the development. To be honest, I find it more interesting to follow a device that's an underdog from the beginning. I went and looked in the Z1 development part of XDA and I saw CM11 ,paranoidandroid... Thats enough for me by far. It will be fun to study how Z2 develops.
I have no fear, only joy.
This also bugs me a lot. I currently have HTC desire HD which came with 2.2. So far I have flashed 2.3 4.0.4 4.1 4.2 4.3 and 4.4. Till 4.1 I have flashed both sense and asop roms. Does Z2 will keep up like this?

Lack of need for "development" was one of the reasons why I ordered a Z2.After four years of Samsung on my i9000 and i9300 and the need to root it to remove the bloat, wherafter "enjoying " the "development of CM / PA/ Slimrom etc ,and the frustration of the poor results of this development,
I decided to go for the best phone available atm because Sony stays very close to "stock "android the way I enjoy it on my N7.
Maybe from now on I can only enjoy this beautifull phone without ending up running around in circles as a "flash.a.holic" again.
For those who wish to persist in their "flashing" habits : good luck with it....

Samsung S3 ownwers are left behind on 4.3,their choice : stay on 4.3 or use any of the CM/PA/Slimrom 4.4.2 Roms.
This leads to a phone with the latest android version, the price you have to pay for it: camera malfunction, bluetooth sound stutters and sound issues for heavy gamers are only a few of the problems.I went up and down between 4.3 and 4.4.2 many times and learned my lesson ;better stay on the version thats working properly ( Samsungs Rom )
Sony updates all Z phones to Kitkat in may,so even with a Z of one year old you are not left behind.
Even if Sony leaves me behind at any time in future I will remember the lessons learned....
I'll release an early cm build next week if all goes well

Samsung S3 has the exynos chipset, that makes it harder to develop for, but the kitkat roms on there aren't as buggy as you say, they will most likely be stable by the time Sony finally rolls out their kitkat update to the Z (possibly it's last update ever knowing Sony). I personally hate the idea of buying a Smartphone and in a year it feels ancient and like a thing from the past, I am not rich enough to update my phone so often and most contracts are lasting 2 years. The aftercare you get from Sony is too poor for me personally

Any idea of rooting this phone with locked bootloader? so we all can happily back up the TA partition.
While we're on the subject, is there a guide I can read explaining this Sony stuff? Mainly regarding the root process/DRM keys etc etc?
I'm new to Sony

@krabappel2548: Might be too early to ask you this question, but doesn't do any harm to ask I guess.
I really can't wait to replace the stock ROM with CM, but on the other hand I wouldn't want to loose functionality that is ROM specific, most importantly camera functions. As far as I understand it is not possible to install the Sony stock camera in another ROM because it comes with a whole framework (which I guess can't be ported?!). In addition to that I'm under the impression that previous versions of the xperia Z shot better pictures in low light with the stock ROM.
Do you know if we're gonna loose the camera app and it's features or is it possible to port it over to CM?
If you could shed some light onto this issue, I would appreciate that.
Hopefully there'll be GP edition of this!

No, stock camera app won't work on cm, but you can always use 3rd party apps
I'm almost finished with device tree for Z2

Well, it seems like the Sony camera is way better than any 3rd party camera out there, that's why I asked. I'll open up a new thread and see where that takes us.
btw. do you think we will be able to backup the TA partition on the Z2? I still haven't rooted my device
I think as Android improves with every iteration, OEMs are slowly learning that simple is good. The stock feature set on the Z2 is fantastic, as in the camera. Less and less people are going to be willing to sacrifice things like the native camera app when the perceived benefit of switching to a custom ROM diminishes.
Personally, the first thing I did when I got my Z2 was install Google Now Launcher for a vanilla Android look and feel, but I wouldn't even consider doing a build of my ROM for this phone at this point in time because the stock features are brilliant a they are.
I don't think lack of development is an indicator of an unsuccessful phone anymore, but rather the opposite.
HTC devices are inherently going to have a lot of development as long as they continue with Sense, because Sense is such a user polarizer.
I think the current state of the factory ROM after .55 update is quite stable with some small issues. I am content with the current ROM. It is snappy, no lag and smooth. No carton-ish icons or effects like the Samsung phones

Well, just as I thought. I have some hope on developers here, but considering how little work has been done with AOSP and CM I can't expect too much
ridiculous they were teased with devolved Android n

Personaly I would go with OP3 or nexus devices. Good specs and developer friendly.
I like OP3 and Xiaomi mi5 but I would miss the SD card... I would consider Huawei P9 or LG G5, but these have poor developer support. Any alternative?

I have hope for the community, we'll make it through with better sources and faster updates than what Sony had to offer us. Hopefully official Cyanogenmod comes our way.

I would have hope if it wasn't for the fact that we don't have an official CM13 yet. All the builds of the CM12.1 are even nightlies and don't offer the audio and camera quality that Stock has. Let's be real, Sony sucks at open sourcing and the community can't do magic
Sure it sucks, but why is anyone surprised? The Z3 launched September of 2014, almost two years ago.
You really can't blame Sony, two years is pretty standard for updates. Even Google only gives two years of guaranteed updates for the Nexus line.
iirc the concept developers are trying to release the kernel sources, which would allow the devs on xda to build better roms.

The Z3 is an really nice device. Sad to see that Sony say goodbye to us. I hope customs ROMS can help.
I have Android Nougat 7 Preview 4 running on my Xperia Z3 (and it spontaneously reboots 24 times a day which is a major problem that hopefully the real version will fix). I mean how can they NOT release a real version of Android Nougat?
Well the user base did come together and made Sony change their minds about Xperia M2 and lollipop update... At first it was cut out after which Sony later decided to roll out lollipop for that model...

I think z3 shouldn't use mm or lollipop rom. Because the device will be very hot and it'll make touch screen died. I know someboby have to replace thier touch screen.
Sony cant release N for z3. Google/ Qualcomm removed msm8974 support from aosp N kernel. Sony would have to revert these commits which is the legal issues that the concept Dec was talking my about on g+

Meanwhile, Apple released the last iOS 9.3.4 on the iPhone 4S, released in 2011.
Talk about standards. SMH.

This means no device with Snapdragon 800/801 will get N.
That's disappointing considering it was working fine on Dev Preview 3.

I imagine it was a decision by Qualcomm to force people to get new phones so they sell more chips. And I bet we don't see and 801 devices get official N. Only 805 and later

That's mean if kernel sources is out, we can build Android 7 rom without Unlock Bootloader?
