Apps I disabled at first boot - Xperia Z3 Compact General
So, coming from a long tradition of rooting and fiddling around when I first booted the Z3c yesterday I was "impressed" by all the apps that are on the phone that I really, really don't need. Now, since we don't have a way to safely root the device I have deactivated as much as possible.
For LOLLIPOP see this post on page 2, here by @jesusrop

What about you others?
So, how did you "deactivate" the apps?

Click to collapse
You go into apps, then swipe to the right to the "All" tab. Click on the app you want to deactivate and there's a button that says "disable"
3 things:
- I personally always stop the app and clear the data
- Some apps you can not disable, that button is then greyed out.
- Some services might not work if you disable the wrong app, disable only if you are sure that you don't need that app. (might sound logic but I've heard many things in my xda-life..)

Out of curiosity which ones of the ones I deactivated do you use on a regular basis?
Of course, I need a browser, emails and a music player so I have nb pro, cloudmagic and spotify instead of chrome, gmail and walkman.

That was really more of a joke, like how can there be that much to disable and still have stuff left on the phone.. :silly:
But, I use Hangouts, the Xperia FB/Twitter are likely for integrating FB/Twitter into contact list (which I like because it pulls in pictures), gmail, chrome, Walkman (I still buy my music on CDs and rip to FLAC), GP Books (I have a couple magazine subscriptions)... the rest I'm not sure on.
What's the benefit to disabling an app if it's not running in the background? It's still taking up space on /system (not that you could use the space otherwise, unless rooted of course).
Be aware, Disabling Device Administrators triggers (some) Apps to get activated again!
So, just in case you wonder why say Chrome, Google+ etc. came back without you having activated them, please check this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/help/deactivated-apps-getting-activated-t2889082
but if Idon't use those apps they will be running in background taking ram or just take memory from my internal storage?

I get a button that says "Force Stop" but no "Disable"
Edit: looks like some apps have disable and others dont.
Why do some applications automatically load up (IE Google Maps) even when I don't run it?

Because sometimes other apps trigger them to run in the background.

This is really weird. When i download a paid app or protected app, it appears under /sdcard/download as downloadfile.apk It happens to every ROM i use. Mine does that too whenever i restore a rom. The market auto restores all apps but they download to /sdcard/download first. Even if you delete the files from download. Reflash a new rom and let it restore your apps it will re-add the "downloadfile*.apk" to your downloads folder. Weird but nice. Never thought of it but buying an app, flashing a new rom and letting it restore will put it on sdcard and then you can get a refund and it will still be there. Wonder why it does this?
NO more Android Market. Now called....
......called 'Google Play' "Google has just taken the wraps off of Google Play, the replacement for the Android Market, Google Music and everything else from the search giant. The new Google Play went live earlier this morning and we are already starting to receive updates for their suite of apps. Google Music and Books have both been updated today in the Android Market — err Google Play to support the new “Play” branding. Now being called Google Play Music and Google Play Books and that is about it. Under the what’s new tab we basically have nothing other than new name, new logo, same great app. So nothing appears to have changed yet but Google is quickly changing thi… continue reading here: http://androidcommunity.com/google-play-apps-updated-in-android-market-20120306/ It looks like Google is trying to rename everything about Android that is really Google’s doing – into something with Google in it. They’ve just killed the Android Market name (and web link) in order to rebrand it into Google Play. Now the focus will still be on apps, but also it will be a lot more on music, books and movies. They will do this by separating all these into 4 categories. The apps will be available in the Play Store, the music in the Play Music, the books in Play Books, and finally, the movies in Play Movies. This certainly comes as a surprise that is unexpected, because we were all used to using the Android Market for these, although it’s true that the vast majority of people only used it for apps. So now that they are doing this, perhaps it will convince people to buy music from Play Music, books from Play Books, and so on. Unfortunately, there’s still the same old country-access problem, and only a handful of countries have access to books, music and movies so far (blame the content labels): More Info HERE: http://androidactivist.org/news/android-market-is-now-google-play/ Damn, everything is changing sooooo fast.!! Matt
Hmm, I'm one of those guys that doesn't like change. However, if everything stays the same, it's ok with me. Android Market may be too simple of a name, (Google) Play sounds ok.
Remember to pick up some discounted apps while browsing Google Play.
Market is now called Play Store. It just updated to 3.4.6. The icon looks cool. Nothing else changed within the app. Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA
In the future we will have Google Play Music , Google Play Movie ......
Xeleth said: Can't wait for the Store APK to pop-up. I think this is some very good branding from Google. Click to expand... Click to collapse You can get it in a few places now. I put it on my site too. Google Play 3.4.7.apk Edit: Corrected the market number.
I'm looking forward to the new features!
really need a real time cloud sync. i use my tablet and phone (depending where I am) and would like the data synced between them (game saves etc)
today my home screen shortcut to Goolge Play disappeared again, released a new update?
Its just the same. Only name change
"Play - My Library" widget missing options
When placing the "Play - My Library" widget on the homescreen, a prompt usually then gives you the choice between five options: My Library, My Books, My Magazines, My Music, and My Movies & TV Shows. However, since leaving the US, the latter four options have disappeared on both my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7, leaving only My Library. This is unfortunate because I previously used the 2x2 My Music widget (displaying a single album cover art) as a shortcut to the Google Play Music since both the player widget and app icon are so damn ugly. I cleared the Google Services Framework, disabled Location Access, and restarted the device in Airplane Mode, but it insisted on connecting to a network prior to placing the widget. I wonder if using a VPN would work but is there any other way? I don't feel like paying a subscription just to place a simple widget.
Google+ photos on Daydream?
One thing that I find sorely missing from Android TV are better Daydream apps. When I'm playing Pandora or Google Play Music or whatever, I would love to have a photo slideshow going on with the photos that are linked to my Google account (ideally, all of my Auto Backup photos in random order). I'm currently using Cloud PhotoFrame EX.net, but it's... well... unpolished (?). Now, I don't mind using a mouse if I have to, but I really REALLY want a good looking slideshow up as a screensaver. Maybe there's a way to plug this into Dashclock somehow? (Though I can't seem to find ANY photo extensions for Dashclock..?)
Search chain fire in the store on the nexus player he made a cool app has cooler daydream images and so on its called 500 fire paper also there's a file browser on the store now with root access called anExplorer

Idk either lol wasn't thinking on the last part, it has tons of categories though, and options for update interval controls for it to, the quality looks really good though, and I haven't seen any one else mention it sorry /:

You know, it's funny... the Chromecast has this feature mostly baked in to the new "Backdrop" functionality. Maybe it's still coming.
Would be cool, backdrop? What is that? Is it the showing Google photos on your account?

Ah I see that is cool, maybe it's just for the chromecast stick right now? Seems like it since the chromecast app doesn't find my nexus player, Hopefully they do it for the nexus player though it'd be cool
Hey guys, I noticed with the latest version of Google photos, it is compatible with the nexus player, and now adds the option to daydream settings. But when I set it, it doesnt work, tells me there are no photos selected. I'm wondering if there is a way to sync an album or collection down to the nexus player. Any one get this working?

If you use the daydream on smartphone, there is a settings button for google photos where you can select pictures. That button is absent on Android TV daydream settings.

coming from a chromecast, it really makes me sad I can't just go pick a bunch of my family google+ photo albums to display in daydream mode Hope they add this soon.
Me Frame - Digital photo frame I use "Me Frame - Digital photo frame" to daydream my google+ Photos. I had to sideload it. Sorry cant link yet. Hope That Helps.
Personalised Photos Daydream on Android TV Daydream We've written an app for Android TV that is designed to look and feel like the default Google Daydream/Backdrop. It can show photos from 500px, as well as your own photos from Google, Facebook and Flickr. Sorry I'm not allowed to post links on this forum yet, but if you search "furnaghan photo screensaver" you'll find it!
Switch between 2 open apps
Hi Guys I'm going insane figuring out how to switch between 2 open apps quickly. Let me give you an example: I run with my watch and I like listening to music from the watch during the run. This means I have 2 apps open: Runtastic (to register the workout) and Google play music (to stream music to headsets). Normally I keep Runtastic in foreground so I can see the stats of my workout at any time and Google music is running in backgroud. Sometimes, though, I'd like to e.g. skip a song and in order to achieve that I have to go to homescreen, display app drawer on the watch and browse for Google play music. After that I have to go the same steps in reverse to get Runtastic back to foreground. Is there really no easier way? Maybe there's app for it? Robert
Try Gesture Launcher maybe? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.format.gesturelauncher
Good tip, thanks. I've given it a try already and looks promising. Can't believe google haven't taken care of similar native feature.
