About a month ago, I was having a problem with my Nexus 7 wanting to download/install a system update. I found a method online where I simply renamed /System/Etc/Security/otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak. This worked and all was good for a few weeks.
Now, despite still having the renamed file, I am getting notifications for a system update again. I googled the problem and it appears that Google Play Services is now including the update service which is re-enabled each time the app updates.
Is there a new and improved solution to keep the update from downloading/notifying/installing? I have re-purposed the tablet for a child and rooted the stock 4.4.2 software in order to avoid ads which are not always kid-friendly and also to allow disabling Google apps that I don't want my child to have access to. I could take the update, but that would require undoing all the mods, updating, re-rooting and re-applying changes. I would rather not invest the time for a child's device that is working smoothly otherwise.
Trying something I found on another site. We'll see how it goes:
Install "System application manager" from the Play store (http://bit.ly/1mf6etg)
Install "Disable Service" from Play Store (http://bit.ly/1mf6XKL)
Download "Google Play Services 4.3.25" which will be side-loaded in a future step (http://bit.ly/1mf2WpT)
Go to Settings>Apps>All and find Google Play Services. Wipe cache and data. Uninstall any updates (I had to disable Android Device Manager first)
Install the version of Google Play Services that you downloaded in step 3
Run "System application manger". Tap "Filter" near the top until is shows ">Updated<". You should see Google Play Services in the list. Tap on it, select Manage, then select Convert and move to System Apps
Reboot phone when conversion is done
Open "Disable Service" and go to System Apps section
Find Google Services Framework and tap it. Uncheck "SystemUpdateService" (may already be unchecked)
Find Google Play Services and tap it. Uncheck "SystemUpdateService"
Reboot device again and hopefully be done with OTA nagging
Many people have been having a problem with the SystemUpdateService Wakelock from Google Play Services on their OnePlus One. On other custom roms people have been able to fix it by disabling Wakeup in Google play services in Privacy Guard. I tried that using appops using Xposed but the wakelock was still there even after disabling Wakeup to Google Play services.
Looking at how CM12 Nightlies fixed the issue I learned how to fix it on Oxygen OS.
Method 1 (Tasker)- credit Dimitris Psallidas
* Tasker and Root required
** tested and survives reboot
1. Create a profile based on "Event > System > Device Boot"
2. Add a "Run Shell" action with the command
"pm enable com.google.android.gms/.update.SystemUpdateService"
and tick the "Use Root" option
3. Add a "Run Shell" action with the command
"pm disable com.google.android.gms/.update.SystemUpdateService"
and tick the "Use Root" option

Method 2 - credit Calkulin
This method fixes the problem at the source by flashing a zip file through your custom recovery. It will fix the wakelock until play services updates. Then you will have to flash a new updated zip. Find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/one...mod-google-play-services-update-wake-t3078082
Method 3
First, you need to download Disable Service from the Play Store, it requires root. Then under the System tab you need to go to Google Play Services and enable SystemUpdateService. That will fix your wakelock. You will notice that there is another SystemUpdateService under Google Services Framework, but leave that one disabled. -
This method is a Temporary Fix. You must enable that service again after a Reboot. OxygenOS disables it by default on boot which causes the wakelock.

Already posted it on the Ox OS thread.

Does anyone no now to enable the service on boot with Tasker? I don't know if a terminal command or a script could be used to enable that service.

Yup. This was posted for CM back when it had the same wakelock: https://plus.google.com/112425488314892935797/posts/VqubRkcTpEE
Thanks, those methods work great for automatically taking care of the problem.
It's by far easier:
- Xposed
- Install "Wakelock Terminator" from the Play Store
- Search for the Play Services, filter the wakelock "SystemUpdateService"

Not working with oxygen os (5.0.2)
I did this Tasker fix on mine and holy crap what a difference. Back to similar battery life as when I was running stock 4.4.4.

Can you guide me configuring tasker ? I never used it actually. Please tell me a step by step procedure as I am a total noob in this.
I pretty much haven't ever gotten Tasker to work because it requires a lot of effort. But if you follow the OP, it's really easy to figure out. (this is my way of saying I barely know what I'm doing and don't feel qualified to explain how to do it)

Any fix without root. I can't root for work apps on phone.
What a difference this makes... Loving oxygen with xposed... It does everything I want and rock solid stable. Thanks for this fix!

This will work for you but you need a custom recovery to flash

Was there another non-root solution? The two methods in the op speak to root.
I have twrp recovery installed now
I haven't seen any that don't require root but then again, I didn't really look since I fixed the source of the issue the first time I saw it on my phone

I posted your fix as a method on the original post. Thanks for your contribution.
works great thanks
Ever since I updated to 5.1, I've been unable to update existing sideloaded apps or install new sideloaded apps.
I have gone about to ensure the standard options are in place, such as:
- Turning on "Allow Unknown Sources"
- Turning off "Verify Apps"
I've even gone as far as to:
- Enable USB Debugging
- Disable ESET real-time scanning
- Disable ESET's ability to detect potentially unsafe applications
This applies when trying to update/install via the APKpure app, the Aptoide TV app and by manually downloading/installing an APK.
Anything else I can potentially try?
My Shield TV device is a 16GB First-Generation model.
Thanks in advance, cheers.
This is a guide to implement universal Gms Doze in pie Roms
Note - this is a temperory fix
Process
- Install universal Gms doze module From Magisk manager
- reboot
- go to device admin tab under security in Settings and just disable find my device
- then go to apps and Notification > Advanced > special App access > battery optimisation > all apps
If google play services showing under apps then it is good to go
Note - as this is a temporary fix you have to disable find my device after every reboot.

Why need gms doze module? Pie is already optimize.
People experience crashes after enabling doze in magisk.
If u want fix for google service drain then use agni kernel. There is option to enable.

Hi there everyone! Today I will show you how to install the "secret" One UI version of Google Messages!
The best things about this "special" version are that:
it has RCS enabled by default,
it will get the features from Samsung Messages. And the best? It will be
it is already native in Galaxy S22, Galaxy Z Fold3/Flip, etc.
NOTE: There is no ARM .apk available yet. This method will only work for ARM64 devices (for now).
Video guide:
Too long; didn't watch steps:
If you already have it installed, uninstall Google Messages.
Go to APKMirror and search for Google Messages.
Tap on the most recent version of the app. It's usually the one on the top (for example, 9.3.002 is newer than 9.2.030).
Scroll down to see all the available downloads.
Tap on the "(...phone_samsung_dynamic)" variant. If there is no such variant, you may try installing an older version or wait until it'll be uploaded.
Tap on "DOWNLOAD APK BUNDLE".
Launch the Google Play Store and search for "APKMirror".
Install APKMirror Installer (Offical).
Launch APKMirror Installer.
Tap on Browse files.
Allow all the permissions it asks.
Go to the directory where the .apkm file is and tap on it.
Tap on Install package.
Tap on Install app.
Turn on "Allow from this source" and go back.
Tap on Install app again.
When a pop-up appears, tap on Install.
Launch Google Messages.
Allow all permissions and set it as your default SMS app.
Close the app from the Recents menu and launch it again.
─── Enabling RCS and features from Samsung Messages ───
Tap on the triple dots on the top right and go to Settings.
Tap on Chat features.
Turn on "Enable chat features".
When the pop-up appears, tap on Allow.
Tap on "Verify your number" and insert your number.
Wait until the Status changes to "Connected". If it doesn't, restart your device and try again.
Go back to Settings and then go to Advanced.
Tap on Text on Galaxy devices.
Turn on "Allow Bixby and text on Galaxy devices".
Close the app from the Recents menu and launch it again.
Enjoy the new Messages app!
