this morning i had an note from google that towelroot was on my phone and that i should remove it. my question is
1. att s5 850
2. rooted with towelroot
3. running root cloak and Xprivacy
4. updates frozen with TB att, google, knox
my question is " how did google know?" and what am i doing wrong to not allow apps or rooting to be seen?

Also, towel root tells you to Uninstall after rooting, because the app no longer has any function or use.

with device rooted how do i treat OTA updates and security updates. i installed SU as a system app. will this work to maintain root?

On vast majority of phones you don't get OTA at all when device is rooted. Standard updates like flashing ROM manually or going normal through PC Suite (or whatever its name is - depends on brand) will keep your root if normal update is performed. If update is done with/after full format then root is usually gone so you need to re-root.

I have a new Note 3 with 4.3. I'd like to do the following things:
* update to 4.4.2 (is it better to stay with 4.3 if I care about the other things I'm going to enumerate here?)
* root it, I don't care about knox
* remove most of Samsung bloatware (I like the clock and the pen stuff and would like to keep them) - does titanium backup still work for this, what do I have to care about to not brick the phone?
* install adblock and afwall
* all that without the need for a samsung online account
Are there any step-by-step instructions for these things, especially for rooting?

1) Sure. Update to Kitkat. I have only positive things to say about the official kitkat ROM.
2) You can root it (tripping knox would become mandatory).
3) Titanium works perfectly.
4) You just need root for that.
5) You don't need a Samsung account for anything except using Samsung apps. I haven't used it yet.

1) I have not updated to kitkat yet, but decided to stay with 4.3 for the moment and only root it, to become a bit more acquainted with the device. I wonder whether that kitkat version you posted will work with my language?
2) Using cf-auto-root worked fine.
3) Restoring my apps and data using titanium backup also worked without any problems, except the phone imported the contact on the sim in a nasty way, making a mess of my address book. It will take me some time to tidy that up.

Most languages are in the stock roms....
If you do update to KK make sure re-activation lock is OFF... This applies to custom roms too as it can brick your phone otherwise...

To remove Knox, goto Settings, General, Applications, All.
Disable all Knox apps.
That's what I have done. No issues with it. And it is completely reversible if you run into any problems.
Most things work fine, and I like the handwriting recognition. Apart from that, I did not find much use for the pen, except it is a nice gimmick.
I have one problem which seems related to adaway and supersu: Applying the new hosts file sometimes takes very long. And I suspect it to cause battery drain thereafter. Has anyone experienced similar difficulties? My solution at the moment is to apply the hosts file and then restart the phone immediately.
You can remove knox with titanium 'couse if rooted then knox will not work anymore, so there is no point in keeping it!

I'm not sure it had anything to do with adaway and supersu. I've greenified adaway, and the issue still persisted. Now I've removed many Samsung pre-installed system apps (samsung account, camera test, bluetooth test, factory test, scrapbook etc.) and do no longer experience the battery drain. Let's see in a week or so.

We're on the pre-NE9 release and I used Towelroot to get the phone root. This was critical because we were migrating from an old S3 to the S5, so it was easier to use Titanium Backup to bring back the apps and savegame data.
Well it turns out my friend needs to run MDM Airwatch and Root cloak isn't working anymore. TBH there really isn't any reason to keep the phone rooted because it just makes OTA difficult too. So I think we're ready to go to an unrooted state.
So the first thing is we're struggling that even after doing a full unroot via SuperSU uninstalling Towelroot, it still doesn't pass MDM. So if anyone has a suggestion go ahead.
I'm not sure whats wrong but even then the OTA won't install either, so I'm suspecting the phone still finds something not in stock state.
So here's my question: Is it possible to install the OTA via Odin and ensure that the apps/data are not lost? I've heard that there's a lot of reasons OTAs can fail, so its more reliable to just use Odin to get the OTA applied. I figure that once we get the OTA updated, perhaps MDM will pass? If not we can always factory reset at that point.

You can't flash the OTA via Odin but you can sideload it by placing it on your ext-sdcard then sideloading from stock recovery. And by MDM I am assuming it's the modem that is not passing verification. Here is the G900V_NE9_Stock_Modem.tar.md5. Flash in PDA slot in Odin(AP in Odin v3.09+) then attempt to take the OTA again.

options for rooted and non rooted try it i used it to backup a app data locally without gmail cloud on my rooted note3 and save the file did the same on my rooted s5 and had it Manuel restore that file just need to create the same file folder and drop the file in it if you do Manuel
so stupid i had passed a ton of level on chuchu rocket i didnt wanna redo

Ok so my Verizon S5 is running on Kitkat using the NI2 firmware and rooted using the towelroot method - flashing the NCG, rooting and reflashing the NI2.
The phone keeps wanting to take the OTA and my son keeps hitting accept forcing me to reflash about once a month.
Haven't really researched this too much as she's happy with the phone, but I would like for the sake of my sanity and wifi tethering to update this phone to the most recent firmware possible and keep root. Also getting tired of the annoying update notifications.
Would like to keep a stock ROM as I have had some issues with custom ROMS.
I'm sure someone can point me in the direction of an already established thread.

You could disable the system update app and that will stop you from getting the update notification. I used titanium backup to freeze it

I would recommend updating to marshmallow (PF4) if you have the 15xxxx eMMC and can unlock your bootloader.
I just upgraded from KitKat over the weekend and a bunch of my issues with my phone (lots of Force Closes) were resolved.

Straight to the point, I bought Samsung S7 Edge second-hand and I get trouble in lagging and always show notification of "Unauthorized actions have been detected. Restart your phone to undo any unauthorized changes."

samsung health, android pay and secure folder won't work on device that has root or have been rooted. firstly, to get rid of the annoying notification, install titanium backup,grant root rights if you are still rooted, locate the apk "security log agent and freeze it. If not, install latest twrp and root with magisk or supersu, just search online how to do so. lastly , to get rid of the lagging and notification . flash latest stock rom via odin and everything would be fine ..just remember that your knox is tripped forever so don't expect samsung health would work after removing root or getting back to latest stock ..hope this helps and good luck

Hi, I finally solve my problem by Upgrade my phone Android version. And my phone status now show OFFICIAL and all Samsung Official Application are able to use now!

I have issue with app on my S7 Edge that demands me to unroot. I rooted my phone 5 years ago or more and I don't remember a thing about it. I did this to permanently remove bloatware. Only way I know to unroot is to flash stock-rom again but I don't want to loose my hard effort on debloating + data and so on. Is there any tricks for that? Like hide/remove su binary? I really don't remember where to start. Also with factory reset or something I cant remember I lost root access partially - that is apps can still tell that phone is rooted (root checker tells that root access is available but then also orange warning that root access is not properly installed on this device). But they can't request root privilege for some reason. But I still have this custom recovery rom installed where I have basically root access to phone - do you think I could use this to somehow hide temporarily root from my app that is complaining about it and then later restore root to the full - that is to make apps able to request root access again? I would like to keep my apps/data and I remember them getting lost in process of rooting due to some samsung encryption crap - not sure how to check data/app loss would be case now since I did it so long time ago. Could anyone help me out?
For documentation purposes. So in my case I had lost root with factory reset. I had to boot into TWRP and re-flash super su. Difference from official tutorial: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...ial-twrp-for-galaxy-s7-edge-hero2lte.3334084/ was that in step 9 my phone did not complain about dm-verity,. I did not have to disable encryption and I did not loose my data. Someone may correct me but it was because I had already rooted in past and the most likely cause for "loosing" root was doing factory reset. PS I have european model so I am not sure how much it makes this tutorial different.
Now what is left to do is come up with ideas how to hide root from 1 specific app in Android 7.
