Shield Tablet Update 1.2 OTA is out - Shield Tablet General

Downloading now, clocks in at 691.01 MB
Enhanced SHIELD Hub Features
Network Test capability
User Customizable " My Android Game" and "My Media Apps"
Improved Touch Performance
Misc. Stability and Localization Improvements
Will let you know how it goes.

Do you still have root after updating? That is all I want to know before I update.

SuperSu was unable to preserve root, but Towelroot still works.

691MB means that most likely, the update is fully wiping /system and redoing everything.
The benefit of doing a full deployment instead of a delta is that while it uses up MUCH more network bandwidth, at least it is far less likely to fail.

Screen lag is no better for me, unless I use max performance.

This is definitely a big plus. I wonder if Tapatalk will work after this update.

I wasn't expecting much from this update to be honest, "Misc. Stability and Localization Improvements" doesn't really give any information about what has been fixed...
I can however report that it has fixed my two biggest issues so far (admittedly this is only after two days of testing).
I haven't had a single SoD since the update compared to one every time the tablet was unused for more than two hours. This was reproducible every time on my tablet; 1:59:00 tablet would turn on without needing to do a hard reboot, 2:00:01 tablet wouldn't turn on necessitating turning it off by holding the power button for 10 seconds and then switching back on. I've now been able to turn the tablet on after leaving overnight for the last two nights
It also appears to have reduced the battery drain (maybe related to the SoD who knows...) when the tablet screen is off, instead of the battery stats showing a constant downward slope it's now a pretty much flat line while not being used overnight.
Again this is obviously early days but it's definitely made a difference to my particular tablet YMMV.

Guys, is it better to update or not? I have root and alot of games , Is this update will wipe and effect on my data?

How do you block/prevent OTA updates on the Shield Tablet?

You can update whit no problem, you are not going to loose any data, but you will loose root access, but use towellrot to gain access again.

I assume you mean SoD?
Sleep of Death; the tablet won't respond to any attempts to wake via the power button after it goes into deep sleep. This used to happen to my tablet after two hours every time. The update appears to have fixed my tablet I still haven't had any issues since applying it.
Still having the weak wifi issue when holding the tablet in portrait mode at the bottom, though I'm hoping when my case arrives that will resolve the issue as it did for my iPhone 4 back in the day...

Adding my case definitely helped some with the wifi drop, though didn't knock it out totally. SoD occurs quite often on my LTE replacement where it didn't happen as often on my wifi only I RMA'd. Factory resets and even no apps installed doesn't change the crashes and SoD issues. Even coming out of console mode it seems to do it 70% of the time requiring reboots to fix. Its almost comical how many crazy issues this tablet as a whole is having out the gate.

I have had zero SOD since upgrading to 1.2. Stinks that it is still happening for some though.

I think it is a hardware issue they are not admitting. I finally call NVIDIA support today to describe the lag and SOD I'm still having with 1.2 and was given a RMA without asking for one.

How do you flash the image files? I just didn't get the instructions from nvidia website. Can someone clarify everything on how to install the update using PC or using recovery? Ta..

Phone Keeps FREEZING!!! What the heck Samsung?!!!

My galaxy S freezes out of the blue, and i can't even turn it off. Sometimes i look to check the time, and noticed the phone is turned off. Both problems are only corrected by taking out the battery, and putting it back in...and then waiting for it to happen again!
Is this a software issue that 2.2 will fix? Should I exchange for a new one, or will all of them have the same problems, if bought from the same place? (Best Buy in Vancouver Canada)
either your battery is not good, or your got a defective phone
the new SGS out of the box works smooth
what is your firmware version?

Sounds like a bad phone. I got mine from one touch in delta and it has been perfect. Return asap and get yourself a working unit.

Thought you meant lag. Mine lags a lot (stock firmware) and sometimes "freezing" seems the word.
But no, that's not it. Perhaps you can try a hard reset and check your sdcard too, something isn't ok.
I'm actually experiencing the same issue. My phone goes black and seems to be happening more in low wireless connection areas. Like in a mall. With the the *# code I get I9000UGJG9.
if you have LAG issues, install the one click lag fix in the development area
problem solved
Its not LAG issues it a complete freeze issue. My phone goes black like standby mode and will not come out of it. The only fix is a battery pull or holding the power button for 6 seconds. The same issue as the op.

that is a factory defect
take it back, exchange it for a good one
this latest firmware is really good, you should not see anything like that
Allright will do. I figured as much I didn't want to bring it back I already purchased some apps. Guess I'll have to wait for my store to get some.

you do not lose the Apps
once you log back into your Gmail account in your new phone, when you go into Android Market, they will remain in the Download section
those apps are saved in your Gmail account, not in the phone.
that's the cool thing about the android phones
so if you ever switch to say an HTC Android, or a Nokia Android, you can still re-install those apps (assuming they are compatible)
Oh sweet I wasn't aware of that. I sold a couple of the Galaxy S and I'm the only one with this issue as of yet. Hopefully it isn't a common one. I've been trying my best to convert Iphone buyers in most cases when I'm sold out to get this phone I just hope it delievers for my customers and they won't have the same issue as me.

you do know you don't just slide
you have to move the entire picture of the "slide" out of the phone frame for it to unlock
if you say only slide it partially, it will just bounce back and remain locked.
if you have thick fingers it wont work properly
you might be better off using the 3rd party unlock screens, specially the kinds that needs no sliding.
i have that issues nowadays too. randomly "freezes" on the black screen, i can call through my phone (ringing) but there's no notification / vibration or anything or sorts.
the only way is to reboot the phone and it'll randomly happen again after some time >.> and the call that i've just missed isn't showing on the call-log either.
i hope it gets better overtime or i'll just have to reflash!
ps. was fine before i tweaked my cpu settings in sleep mode, you might wanna disable that if you're using it.
Mine has the same problem and by the looks of things a lot of people have this issue. I called customer support and after sometime the rep admitted this and said it will be fixed in next build however I doubt that
Then there are probably lots of diff units out there. The phone shouldn't freeze unless you are using a beta/alpha firmware (pretty unlikely - i've tested more than 10 different firmwares without a freeze), or set the core clock of the cpu to a higher & unstable frequency (OC). people claim that their phone can do 1.2ghz - that's nice, but each chip has a different capability.

Random Pandora Playing

Hi Everyone, I've owned my TF w/ dock for a few months now, and sometimes it just frustrates me...
I know i'm not alone on that one, but man it sure is dissapointing. Things are getting better with each honeycomb update, but we all paid quite a bit of money for this experiment.
Anyways, the latest issue i have is that Pandora will randomly start playing. As in, i used it on sunday for a few hours, and it randomly started monday morning some time. I didn't do anything to the tablet, besides have it on the charger over night, and it randomly started playing again this morning. I hadn't even opened it up in the time between. This time it woke my girlfriend up and she has to work tonight overnight.
Anyone else have this issue or something similar? Is it a random reboot? I really haven't opened it up so i haven't checked the status/runtime.
ugh. I'm really trying to like this thing and there things that i think are great, but some things that i didn't expect to be an issue are. Random pandora playing and a crappy browser are not things i expected...as well as docking station battery drain issues.
Ok, i just checked my system status and it's been up for over 171 hours, so no reboot. Any thoughts on what could be going on?
First of all, considering running on that many hours, I would suggest rebooting. Android is built on Linux and all PC platforms requires an occasional reboot. I would try uninstalling Pandora, reboot and then reinstall. Also, its goes without saying that when you buy a device when it first comes out, you are taking a risk of the increased possibility of faulty equipment as the manufacturer isn't aware of the faults yet.

I know a reboot may be necessary from time to time. I generally do it with mobile devices when something starts to act up while i'm using it or it appears sluggish. This wasn't the case so i hadn't done it. The first time it had done it was probably after 5 days of being online. It just seemed odd that it decided to start playing while shut with the screen off. I will also make sure i quit the app before leaving it overnight.
It only did it while the unit was asleep and pandora was alive in the background. it didn't start up pandora and start playing.
Just because bugs can be expected, doesn't mean i can't be frustrated
True. Well the main benefit to rebooting is that it allows the system to purge and reallocate memory, which memory is usually the main culprit of alot if minor issues. Its possible that for whatever reason, when you exited the app, if it didn't fully clear all processes and services out of memory, for all intents and purposes, the app could still be running to an extent in the background, causing anomalies like such. Not saying that this explains your issue, but its plausible.

ICS in Note
After upgrading to ICS via kies,
Battery seems to drain very fast.
Camera hangs up sometimes and other camera related apps like Instagram also but maybe the pic quality is little better.
It seems to crash when some other apps runs too.
Not sure if it was there before but I can pause music and video if I show my palm on the screen.
The screen rotates faster than in GB with a pause at the beginning though.
News fonts are good.
Window animations are good but still dont' know how to stop it since it might be draining battery fast.
Can use Chrome now and it's fast.
I cannot use Mass Storage Mode. I recieve a "Ui stopped to work" error.
I am facing,
1. High android OS usage. Sometime its higher than Brightness, and most of the time its highest usage of batt after brightness. (I read somewhere, it said its calculation errors, but I think its not, cause my battery no longer last that long.)
2. Camera will sometimes fail to operate. I really dunno what is wrong with that.
3. Phone just cant go into deep slp. Its being kept awake by some apps (Which I cant narrow it) Using BetterBatteryStats, I found out its I2_HSIC. (Whats this I2_HSIC ??)
I am using a 5400mAh mugen batt. previously on GB, my usage can last me 24hrs, now it can only last 16hrs or less. I installed lesser apps, and lesser widgets. Disable account sync and google backup. Settings more or less kept the same.
Overnight my batt can reduce by 21%, it never happened before. lol. ICS...

It looks like a television station not tuned quite right on an analog antenna (if anybody remembers that!)
I can't reproduce it regularly, but It think it has happened when going from an Application, back to the home screen using the home button.
I am on ICS, Taiwan, stock, not rooted.

I can get the screen back by just waiting it out. Usually takes about 2 minutes. I sure do wish I knew what was happening, though, so I could confirm no damage was being done.

As far as #2 goes, go to your battery stats and see if "media" is listed. If so, force close it and try again. Seems to work for me. I'm not sure if it is just me or not because I have been playing with settings lately, but the media scanner tends to run wild it seems (also seems to lend to battery drain).
I am just disappointed that they left out some of the nice features of ics like the updated gallery and camera. Seems kind of lazy to me and no wonder things arent working well if they are mix and matching gingerbread and ics rather than going all in and starting development from there. It would be ok to share more details on the update itself, phone, when was the update, for how long it is already heated, do you have an SD Card or not, a lot of files on the phone (Music, Photos, PDF's, documents)?...
It's probably the IndexService process running, or there is an app that causing the phone to over process and use the full power of the CPU. Let it alone for a couple of hours and see if there's a change. If not and you have an SD, remove it. If that doesn't work, delete all the files in the internal and on the SD card (WITHOUT FORMATTING! ONLY DELETING! ) and see if that solved the problem. If you have rolled all the options above, and non of them worked for you, you should search for an app that causes all of that. If no app was found, format the phone.
Good luck
Also, what carrier, and what update version? That would be useful info, if nothing else, to help others who are reading.
I'm in airplane mode. Used WiFi then turned off the WiFi and screen. Seems like an app must be freaking out and chewing up CPU cycles. Turn off the device for a bit and it is still hot for a little while, eventually starts cooling down though.
Kind of crazy...
Traveling without a local SIM, hence airplane mode toggling WiFi on/off. Too hard to recall what apps I was in/out of...
If I had root, could probably figure it out.......
That has happened to me once. I just turned it off and back one completely. And it was back to business as usual. Must be some bug.

BUGS & BATTERY USAGE on JULY official rom

hi MI A1 owners.
for those brave enough to use the latest vanilla, official OTA rom, what change did you notice?
does the battery still suffer huge drain that appeared in 2018 roms?
it's a big "NOPE" for me to update, i'm still on official DEC rom because of this drain issue.
Battery life is good on 8.1 no issue for me getting 5-6 hours SOT on gaming.
Never had battery drain problems. Only "issue" is notification led not blinking.
Just noticed that led light is no longer blinking when notifications arrive. Light stays on only when screen is off. Also Bluetooth is constantly disconnecting.
Ambient display isn't working for me.
Led notifier is also not blinking anymore!
Led not blinking, proximity sensor doesn't work properly all the time, some scrolling lag. That's what I've got so far
dudes thanks for your answers.
i'm just more convinced to not doing the update.
maybe the drain i had was magisk-related. (?)
Nothing for me, even got ten hours of screen after some cycles. Led doesn't bother me and it's the only thing i noticed.
Yes, the LED is always on, which is annoying, but the bigger issue is there is no change in the battery drain. I charged to 100%, set the phone down and did not move it or use it overnight. 8 hours later almost 14% of battery was drained. I have tried everything I can think of to try, including turning off high accuracy location, not allowing any location things like safe area, etc. and still I get this drain even when the phone is not in use. Android kernel and system consumed 85% of that usage, and System UI, Play Store and Phone Services accounted for 7%! SO basically, basic Android paired with the A1 hardware seems to be the issue and I don't know that there is any fix for that.
At one point, I thought an upgrade to the A2 was going to be a no brainer, but with the issues with updates being broken and this battery drain issue that nobody seems to be able to pinpoint and resolve, I am thinking I may not buy ANY other Xiaomi. It may be time to try something else because the only way I can get two days of battery is to turn on airplane mode when the phone is not in use!

Dunno what to say man. Mine is below.
2-3% at most over night.
And now it would appear that there is an issue with airplane mode.
I put the phone into Airplane mode at 2300 last night with 90% battery and did not pay attention to it. This morning I turned to phone on to find there was only 69% battery left, and WiFi was working. (see screen shot) WTF???? I have started using airplane mode to keep the battery drain to a minimum when the phone is not in use, and now it would appear that this doesn't work either.
I am REALLY getting frustrated with Android and Xiaomi as it seems that every time they do an update, something else goes bump! I have gone from totally happy with the AI when I first got it to being ready to write off Xiaomi as a company I would consider for purchase.

Play services also cause these type of sudden battery losses.
Try downloading latest play services apk from apkmirror . Latest one is

Thanks for the thoughts, but unless I totally misunderstand what airplane mode is, WiFi should not be active when airplane mode is invoked. You can see by the screen cap that airplane mode is on AND WiFi is active. This seems to be a one off as it has not happened again for the last two days. I turn airplane mode on to stop the overnight battery drain while the phone is doing nothing. I have location set to GPS Only. IIRC play services was just updated 3 days or so ago, so it should have the latest version. I will check it and see though. Again, thanks for the thoughts.

I can't logically understand why you would think it is the hardware causing the issue. If it was hardware, what you are seeing would be happening to every owner of the phone and clearly that is not happening. By saying it is the hardware when you have other software loaded is akin to saying your car's air conditioning doesn't work properly when you have all the windows wound down.
There is something loaded on your phone that is causing the systemUI to be working when you think nothing should be happening. The first thing I see on the screenshot on your phone is that in the top left of the screen you have two non standard icons. That tells me that you have a skin or non standard software constantly running.
The way to solve any issue like this is to go back to basics. I would get the fresh rom and do a Miflash whilst keeping your data. Make sure you do a backup first.
If that does not work, back up your data and do a clean install and check the phone's battery life. Do not load any non google software / app at this stage.
Then each day add one app and test for 24 hours. You will find this issue and the offending app or apps and I would be willing to bet you a few Singhas it will be an app you downloaded not the hardware causing this.

Actually, I think it is a combination of hardware/software, but that is just a WAG. Others have noted the exact same issue without running the same software. My bet would be on the RCS services stuff.

Those icons are my Email client and GSAM Battery Monitor (presently 0.1% and 0.8%) and are the only two constantly running programs other than the stock apps and Sophos (0.3%). Neither use much battery compared to the Android stuff. Presently Kernel is 41.6%, RCS/Phone is 30.3%. SystemUI is 3.3%, Play Services is 2.0% and Phone Services is 1.8%

Good luck with it. I hope you find the solution. It can be frustrating, but getting to the bottom of it will be worthwhile. I haven't used Sophos for a long time and even then it was for PC. I am not up with how Sophos AV is integrating into Android but that would be my first guess.
I have only had one issue with this phone after updating and it was that the OS was constantly asking for a password on unlock after using fingerprint not just on startup. A clean install solved it and I have been trouble free since with every update. With over 50 PCs in my office, I could only wish that I had so few issues with Windows updates as I do with Android.
For me, night light auto schedule not working properly.
I can't tether via wifi/bluetoth/usb
Made another post with the problem.

Just for grins and giggles, I uninstalled my email client, GSAM, and Sophos, the only programs that run constantly other than system and Line. I then turned my phone off and back on, forced stopped Line, charged it to 100% and set it down with the screen off. It did not move of get used for 8 hours, yet it still used 12% of the battery. (see screenshots) This is better than the 20% with those apps installed, but still not close to what I would consider normal. When I first got the phone, it easily lasted 2-3 days between charges, with 6-7 hours SoT. Overnight would use MAYBE 2% of the battery. Now if I want it to last 2 days I need to turn on airplane mode overnight and then I can make it through a day.
So I guess the next step is to do as you recommended and load up the fresh rom when I have time to mess with it. At least I am now pretty sure that those apps aren't the culprits causing the biggest part of the battery drain. I hate to do it, but I am seriously thinking of a factory reset and seeing if that clears the issue. Would that put me back to Nougat?

How do you disable this apk? I seriously think this is the major culprit in the battery drain.

So those apps were causing 40% of of the 20% of the battery drain. That is a good start. I am confident there are software issues with your phone. I see you have some GPS app on your home screen, if that was running askew, it might be constantly pinging. That is just a guess.
In things like this, work methodically through it. But of cause a hard reset would be the best way to go. I see no reason why you wouldn't stay on your current version after a hard reset.
If you want to go make to version 7 you would need to use the MiFlash program and a downloaded standard fastboot rom. You may need to do something else to the phone to go back to 7, but I would not think so.
