You do not need a custom recovery you can flash via of in (a flash tool for flashing Samsung firmwares etc)

You need to Google Odin 3.09 and there is a website called Sam mobile that has the latest firm updates. Go to the web site and in the search box type 19505 and choose your country. It will take about 4 hours to download. After it downloads use Odin from a PC to flash it to your phone. There is tons of step by step instructions to use Odin on the wrb. Also could search Odin on XDA.
So you first put the phone in download mode then flash the official firmware using odin?

Yes. Put it in download mode. Plug it into your computer start Odin and you will see a com number at the top left. That means your phone is detected.

If your phones boot loader is unlocked you can. But as for me my boot loader is locked. I have to use safe strap recovery. There should be a section in XDA for your phone. It will tell you everything you need to know.
Sorry but what do you mean buy locked boot loader?

I found a tool can root Galaxy S3 Mini without flashing the rom. I use the tool to root my S3 mini yesterday.
But the tool only use Chinese word.

2. Plug your S3 mini to USB port and execute the tool.
3. Press connect button.
4. Press root button and wait 2 min.

It's not on the play store idk why the other person told you that. It's attached to this post, download onto your tablet, open the file, let it install and run (you have to allow installation from unknown sources in settings > security). I'm using a 64 GB micro sd card with no issues and I can put apps on my sd card, although I am on a custom rom, so idk about stock
I'm seeing know where that says no and the guidon XDA mentions the G950U with correct build number and says nothing specifically about x phone can't do it.
Can it? I see nothing around here about it.
Well I took the plunge and let mine update to U5CRL1then just used the update path on Firmware science to DRL7 now have One Ui. But letting you know once you update past U2 or S2 bootloader there is no going back and no root.

That's my about phone.

Last six characters starting with U or S then a number. The number tells you what bootloader version you have.

Yeah so S5. No root either way? **** it. One UI. Good on AT&T for playing nice with the update
Sent from my PH-1 using Tapatalk

My S8 is just my play phone..and you are correct, no root past U2 bootloader. But I tested the One Ui. Put sim in and everything works

I was going to follow this guide

Yeah that was pulled from firmware science. Your already on the build you need to be on. Go to firmware science install the DRL7 zip move to sd card and flash from stock recovery

Right here

Heres the zip
https://firmware.science/download?url=48927/1488/SS-G950USQS5CRL1-to-U5DRL7-UP

So just put the update on root of internal storage and apply from SD?
Sent from my PH-1 using Tapatalk
Download the zip.
Once downloaded, move it to sd card.
Move anything you want to save from internal storage as this will wipe your phone.
Once you have zip moved to sd card and anything you want saved, power off phone.
Boot to stock recovery (power/bixby/volume up
Scroll down to update from sd card.
Select it then locate the zip, once located click it phone will install the update. It will take awhile. If it boots back to recovery just do a system wipe and all will be fine.

You can use adb

If you don't know how to use adb read up on it. I have not used it for this method but I use it for other things, you don't have an sd card you can throw in device just to load the zip?
