hey all
i thought id share with you for those who would be interested in my first hands on experience with the samsung galaxy s2
well i went round my friends house after work, as he was waiting for one to be delivered as an upgrade, anyway he rang me to say that it was here,
so i thought id go up and have alook.
the first thing i did when he gave it me was.... drop it lol
he passed it me and it slipped right through my fingers it was so thin
it bounced on his hard laminated floor a few times but he just laughed.
it is a nice device, very slim altho abit wider than the play
the brightness on the screen was great
and it was very very snappy scrolling across homescreens and loading up apps,
exploring the memory with astro. i was impressed
and alot lighter than the play aswell
the quadrant scores were off the chart getting something like 3k+
linpack he was getting 48
i did notice that when running quadrant some of the textures were just plain solid shapes no actual textures. i thought maybe thats got something to do with that mali chipset that i heard didnt support certain texture compression but anyway.
i told him to fire up fpse to see what that ran like with the new fpse.
mines runs great hovering around at around 45-50fps
on most games. until i put on screen filtering
and that has a massive impact on fps it drops to around
27-30fps and games become unplayable even with frame skip on max
enhanced 3d rendering has little effect on fps so i keep that on
anyway i thought that the galaxy s 2 with the 1.2 dualcore and the mali 400mp
would power along when putting screen filtering on.
so i tried tekken 3 loaded it up. ran it but without screen filtering on
and it was buttery smooth stuck at 60fps.
then i turned on screen filtering and it dropped to 30/35fps
and was the same unplayable state mine was.
i was gob smacked surely a dualcore would best this???
my mate said, so looks like your not missing much gaming wise then compared to mine. i just smiled ,he hasnt got his for gaming mind.
i dont know if there was summat goin on, or a imcompatability with fpse
but it was an interesting discovery. i tried afew other games and they all were the same.
so as far as emulation and fpse goes were not getting left behind because we have no dualcore cpu.
Someone please correct me here if im wrong but what your saying is that a dual core cpu is the same speed as a single core cpu on single core programming, well yes that is going to be the obvous result, yes different single core speeds will have various results.
But unless a program has been coded for use with more than one processor then it will not make use of a dual core processor.
for example
a single core processor can work out
x = 5
y = ?
x * y = 15
this equation would take as much time on a single core processor as it would a dual core processor as you are waiting for the result of 15/x to work out what y is.
so until FPSE is programmed to allocate for dual core processors you will end up with the same speed of use, or very similar.
I have both, well sort off, play dead gone for repairing with sony, so bought S2 in the mean time, to tell you, S2 with 1gb RAM and Dual core Processor which can be overclocked to stable 1.66 ghz is way fast as compared to play, trust me, graphic wise both have 16m colors, but s2 with super amoled does it somehow better...i miss playing games the play way...thats all...I guess S2 is the world's fastest stable phone for now.....atleast I have both so know it...

The tegra2 bests that GPU in every possible way.
Also doesn't the SGS II have an FPS limit.
Also Exynos as a whole is not all that more powerful than tegra2 I mean the reason the SGS II does so well on benchmarks is because of android 2.3 look at the Atrix 2.3 leak its benchmarks are off the charts as well.
And my last point. There is no need for all this power if it is not going to be used. I mean games need that type of power and games are best played with a gamepad. Why sony ericsson didn't put a tegra in the play is beyond me.
I tried tekken on it, could see puches coming at me my thumbb was always in the way. I told the owner to uninstall as gaming on something like that was a joke. He didnt agree until he tried my play.

Touchscreens suck for gaming.
No amount of processing power in the World will overcome this fact.
hey guys, im looking to buy the nexus 10, but it seems that the res, of the screen, makes some games lag, or is it down to the games not yet optimised?, not only that but, is is possible to force games to run at a lower res, ?
is it worth getting for gaming,?
thanks. amatris
I've had no problems with Nova 3, Shadow Gun, Shadow gun dead zone, Vice city, Deard Trigger, GTA 3, fruit ninja, Angry Birds and SuperGNES.
Which games have you been told lag?
I have to say, I've noticed lag on even simple games like Subway Surfer. In fact sometimes you lose because of the lag!
However I have also played Nova 3 and a couple of other high quality games and had no issues. Thinking it may be more settings based than tablet based!
NFS: MW is one of the games that drop frames pretty hard and is all because of the thermal throttle that the exynos 5 have.
Thanks for the reply guys, bit this id making me think tjat its not a good gaming tablet :-\ , is it still worth it?
Thanks amatris

A lot of the problems can actually be solved by slightly under volting the CPU. This reduces the thermal throttling.

Undervolting is all done through a custom kernel. Check out some of the threads in the dev sections and see if you're up for it. Or just install the Franco custom kernel and you won't have to adjust anything and gaming should be just great! :good:
Do not get this tablet if you want a tablet for gaming plain and simple. The tablet has a relatively weak GPU and massive screen resolution to power. Games like Dead Trigger will run fine on Low settings, but crank the settings to high and the game turns into a stuttering mess. Need for Speed Most Wanted has less graphical effects and details than the iPad version and yet also runs laggy and drops frames. Even something like Subway Surfers and Temple Run are laggy and have a delay when you swipe your finger.
Undervolting it does not help. Undervolting it merely makes it not throttle when it gets too hot. However, the throttling is not the only issue this tablet has with gaming. The GPU is not good enough for this display. You can notice it well enough when scrolling and watching text deform. This text deforming problem happened in the iPad 3 to a lesser degree and is completely absent in the iPad 2 and 4. (3 being that awkward middle retina child without a good enough GPU).
This tablet is great for media consumption but not for playing games.
What do you recommend for a 10inch gaming tablet??

An ipad if you want a gaming tablet. There really is no comparison to be honest for gaming.
Well I want to stick with android, I'm a big android fan and iv used the ipad, the first one that came out right up to the ipad mini and I have to say I don't like ios,
Any android ones you would recommend??
Thanks a amatris .

Its just hard to recommend anything other than the ipad if you want it primarily for gaming. The ipad has a significantly larger library with games that look and play better than anything we have. Look at the note 10.1.
Hmm ok ty, should I be looking at the tegra 3 gpu's for graphics and I'm guessing a quad core cpu?
Thanks amatris.
Edit: how would a Asus TFT300T Transformer? hold up? its at my very max on the price up to £350,
it has
1.4GHz NVIDIA - Tegra 3 Quad-core processor.??
Thanks amatris.

the Quad-core Mali T604 is fast as hell trust me
the problem is that it doesnt get enough CPU power to show off.
the stock settings for the CPU usage is set way to low!
one more thing that makes the games to lag is the up/down speed changes.
everytime the CPU changes its frequency you get lag.
if you have been into PC games you know that a fast GPU is depending alot on the CPU speed as well.
with the stock 1000mhz speeds that the CPU is using for games it wont max out the GPU.
the GPU screams for more CPU power.
the ONLY way to get games running smooth on the N10 is to LOCK the CPU speed at 1500 or 1700mhz.
but its one more problem and i think you know what it is
so to TS
dont judge the N10 for one bad optimized game(NFSMW) with stock ROM.
the games i have tried runs all at 60fps with max graphic settings.
but ok its not stock

lol what the... ?
i just installed it and it runs super smooth at 60fps even with the CPU locked at a low 1000mhz!
that is what i call a optimized game.
but as i said you probably have a CPU that dont knows what freq it wants to use and games dont like it.
just lock the Min/Max CPU speed at the same mhz and come back with a comment
Edit: just tried Subway Surfer with the Stock CPU Governor "Interactive" and stock speeds 200/1700 and it lags as you said.
not much but you notice it.
How do i lock the CPU. And what is that problem you mentioned? Im a very new android newbie

My tablet is locked at 1700mhz and is laggy in every game I try except the playstation emulator and dead trigger on low settings. Subway surfers is still laggy and need for speed is unplayable. I am a pc gamer so im very sensitive to framerates. A good way to tell the gpu is lacking is by watching text deform as you scroll, a pretty classic sign of gpu performance I believe we have the fastest cpu on the tablet front. But a much weaker gpu than the ipad 4 and it shows in our gaming performance. Im not sure how you are getting these games to run at 60fps. Sre you sure it is 60fps? I know many console gamers see 26fps and think its smooth while I think its utter rubbish.

Nope,GT9305 is even worse for gaming than GT9300. S3 is getting old and it's not smooth in gaming anymore. MC series were always laggy and stuttery,so if you want to be gamer of that game, then you will have some trouble. Other than that,S3 still handles games like Most Wanted,Asphalt 7 and 8 (medium) pretty well. MC5 has some constant FPS drops, maybe that will be fixed in future. But if you have some money,I recommend you to buy a better, newer device.

Nothing that a bit of... overclocking can do [emoji41]
Look, S3 is old, but, with the fact being old there is another fact, it can be tweaked good.
Install a custom rom by your choice and pair it up with a good kernel, play a bit with the clock speeds and governors and you will have a speedy phone.
FYI, MC5 on everything stock for me works on 15-20 fps, wich is good, but stuttery, but with OC beeing buffed it can top on 35 fps, wich is uncomparable to the stock, no freezes and works like a charm.
But, the drawback is, battery will run down preety fast so have a charger by your side.
Cheers
Oke thnx thats a bit more info then the first yea because the money is a problem in these times with kids in Euro zones soo gonna look for it for the rom when the phone arrive

No mistakes, lol. GT I9305 has Snapdragon processor because Exynos doesn't contain LTE support and Snapdragon does.
There's a chinese version of Galaxy S3 which has Exynos processor and 2GB of RAM,but GT I9305 has that specs. You should google it,as it seems like you don't know about both S3's much.

About performance of the I9305, i can run all the market at full speed, emulate PSP(with PPSSPP), N64, PS1, etc
I can also run Monster Hunter Unite 3rd(HD version for PS3) at full speed, incredible.
More ram daily is much appreciated. Fast Multitasking and no "lag" load in games.

I just bought the phone (it's Exynos) and the first thing i installed was antutu benchmark, which gave me 52000 which was even higher than the note 4 in the list!! Anyway, it proved that the phone is really good. Now the first game i've installed on it is BIA3, but im having bad problems playing it. it gives me around 16-20 fps only, but i've seen this game run on htc one with more than 25 fps! Also someone else had a problem with spider man which was again weird, and he said that it was the only game doing this!
So now im guessing that these games are running on the 4 weak cpu's, instead of the strong ones...anyone has any ideas on it or how to fix it?
Also could you owners of the snapdragon version share your experience on these two games?
I opened clash of clans, and it was again really laggy...it wasn't before. I thought that the ram being almost full had to do something with it, so i restarted the phone and it played good for about 5 minutes and then the lag started. I tested this on BIA but again it was laggy even in the first 5 minutes of restart.
It's my first samsung phone ever, and i am not satisfied with it!
I ran an another antutu benchmark, and the results were good again,, so the problem must be with the games!
Maybe a way to force use the strong cpu's will help! Any ideas on how to do this?
Its because of 2k Screen .

Do you really think if display is 2k that means all games run in 2k resolution, lol?
well you have a point, but that must not be it. because i dont think that this phone in unable to run even 4k clash of clans smoothly!

Exy model.
I've been a xperia SP owner for 8 months now and it is completly stock and it is my daily driver, and as my secondary i have the TX which ive had for 2 months, but im going to be buying either a brand new SP or brand new TX (mainly because of cosmetic damage but anyway) i want you guys to help me decide,, whether its opinion or personal experience, any help is appreciated, thanks guys :highfive:
I think that our SP just #$#!>'s it off
SP GPU : Adreno 320
TX GPU : Adreno 225
TX Dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait
SP Dual-core 1.7GHz [ 2 GHz with Helium Kernel]
TX Front 1(.3) and Back (13) camera are better than SP (front vga back 8).
DONT forget the led bar on SP
i think that, our SP Development forum on XDA waay better than the TX's.

So, i think you can get over the ram problem by SWAP. I really think that the ram problem is soooo confusing. I faced that with 4.3 stock rom < like 20mb free ram with only walkman running lol >
Now im using CM13 with Helium kernel.
I created a swap partition about 900mb(maybe it's way too high but my sd is 32 gb so not a problem )
you can create 400-500 mb swap partition and use it. Im using Swapper2 app and set the swappiness 100, phone runs really smooth.
And i reached maximum 400-410 mb used swap memory, so i think that +512 mb is enough.
Thank you

Im just laughing at your example i forget those things like music shut downs on browsing lol lol lol
I just say that, maybe running 6+ apps at the same time (Whatsapp+Facebook+UC Browser/Opera+Music+Xda Labs(using it right now)) and may even much more apps at the same time with no problem.
I clear the "Recents" panel rarely and reboot my phone after 2-3+ days of use
I think you should give a chance and upgrade to Cm13 and use Swap. Just try it.
EDIT: Check the screens, i captured them just now As you see, the Total Swap is 1103mb and the free is 803 Mb, phone using like 300mb swap and runs just smooth
I think that the CM13 has gave this phone life :victory:
Never buy xperia sp
Very laggy phone no matter what you do. Even with 6gb ram this phone would still be laggy, why?
Because of slow internal memory.
Slower phones like xperia tx, galaxy s4mini are much faster with less lag.
Xperia sp freezes a lot and stops reaponding because of bad performance internal storage
Edit: all sony phones have bad ram management.
My xperia z1 has like 370-500 at best free ram

And i'm really glad to here it runs so smooth :highfive:

Is this from experience or are you just a SP hater?
And i am also considering the TX (mainly for the removable battery and seemingly better ram management) but from the above post ram management can be improved with abit of tweaking and running a custom rom, i actually owned a z1 for several months and never noticed that kind of ram management, sounds like a app or download was hogging your ram :silly:

I cannot install the Stryflex' s Marshmallow ROM, it gives SystemUI error at boot (but 2-3 people has faced this problem with me, rom is errorless i think thats a problem of my phone
I will wait the Stryflex rom update because of my error and, im waiting for the Xperia X lockscreen and new stuff you understand
Stryflex based on May builds of AOSP, but CM13 nightly updated, your choice
I think Stryflex's roms are good and smooth enough to experience xperia Z5 or X, but i will absolutely wait for the update:silly:

I owned sp for 8 months from 2014 to 2015
I tried all available roms. Some are fast at the beginning like cm11 but the will all slow down eventually.
My z1 never slows down even with 200mb free ram and all the crapware and bloat installed.
Its not about ram my friend, its about memory performance, its most important. Do you wonder why sp was cheap phone with fast cpu and gpu?
They had to compromise(i hope this is the right word, i am not english speaker) on other parts and used cheaper hardware

Do storage benchmark and see how low your score if u have sp in hands
Even gs2 performs faster and never slowed down like sp

I think that our SP never get slower on this rom updates. I think it gives the same performance all the time.
Example CM13,CM13 is way faster than 12.1 and i think our SP enough fast on 6.0.1 you understand?
If you want really fast and 6.0.1 running phone you should go buy new phone i think. Because it's been like 4 years bro, give this phone a chance

i get your point but try to understand it's an 2013 phone running 6.0.1 smoothly enough to daily use and gaming. And im saying again that the CM13 is way better than other roms like CM12.1 and Stock 4.3.
AND you mean GS2 right lol
it gives maximum 20000 antutu score.
SP Gives 40000 score maybe even better
just check the attachments please.

Go and check the hardware internals my friend i think you'll find it had some of the best hardware from 2013 the only thing i can fault the hardware on is the front facing camera and yes im aware that memory performance is a factor thats why developers utilise it the best they can when making roms :good:
@GFlexForever
If you still need advice, I'd say: get the SP. It's one of the few (if not the only) 2013 midrangers that still kicks asses today. Especially the GPU: modern midrangers lag in games (while the SP is perfect) due to Adreno 30x GPUs and (Full)HD displays.
The downside of the SP is the internal memory, that isn't very fast; this is noticeable when you install and app from the Play Store: the phone lags during the installation. 1 GB of RAM is not a downside, for if in 2016 you buy any device with less than 1.5 GB of RAM you surely aren't an "aggressive" user. What's more, with ZRAM and/or swap you can circumvent this problem.
Trimming the /data and /cache partitions once in a while is also a good habit to keep the memory clean and fast, this is not needed on stock ROMs as those trim the memory all the time.

And just to add to this, although the device is from 2013 and hardware has been improved it doesnt mean that this hardware has anything wrong with it, it was the best of its time.
For example phone screens have went from 720p to 1080p to qhd and they improve but that doesnt mean the 720p screen is at fault.
Another example is that the adreno chip in phones improve drastically and they improve, doesnt mean theres a fault with the older ones

Thankyou for the advice i think i am going to go with the SP and just try different roms and as you said use ZRAM or another app and see what the best fit for me and i also have a Z2 which is my main device but i want to keep that more as a business phone if that makes sense, when i get my SP it will be more for out door use like when i go out listening to music or browsing and playing games :highfive:
Big thankyou to Lekuta & tomoms for helping me decide and proving some helpful information :highfive: :good: thanks guys

Best answer,
%100 agree with you !
You will regret it
Benchmarks And numbers mean nothing.
Its true has solid hardware cpu gpu combination. But real life performance is what matters.
Its true sp can run games smoothly but. Using it how its supposed to be used is pain. Lag stutter freeze...
I was thinking just like you when i first bought it
Anyway its your call, but remember my words
Idk about cm13. when i had it, cm12 was not usable...
And beleive me, i tried every solution mentioned here, from almost bloat free roms with just must have phone apps like calendar alarm... and just playstore. To zram swap custum kernels... Overclock
Its very fast as soon as u install your rom with 500+ free ram... But its the case even with a galaxy y.
The phone would slow down eventualy and only uninstalling all your apps would make it fast again
Heck i remember every time i turned on wifi or data the phone would freeze for like 40 seconds. Why? It couldnt handle the incoming notifications lmao.
Mean while slower sd400 devices performs 10 times faster
