[Q] Just got my Note 3, few questions - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Just got a Note 3 from swappable to finally retire my Galaxy Nexus and I have a few questions.
I'm actually okay with the stock "ROM" if you will as I've substituted the Google Now launcher for Samsung launcher.
I just want to root the device in order to enable tethering and for the ability to remove the bloat ware Verizon applications. Is this something that's possible or would I have to get a completely new ROM? For the record also I'm on 4.4.2 so I'm not even sure it's rootable.
Any ROM recommendations or anything else would also be appreciated.
Thanks!
Edit: it looks like eclipse may be the ROM I'm looking for. Any reviews would be appreciated

Eclipse ROM would be the way to go if you like the stock android look. Check out JasmineROM, I'm running it as my daily driver, it is a compete S5 port. Amazing battery and buttery smooth. Its in the development section.

If all you want to do is just get rid of bloat you can just root and use Titanium backup to get rid of it. If you wish to start using roms here's a quicklist I made to help someone which kinda gives you everything in one post....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55003142&postcount=3

Pure Android on S4

Hi everyone,
I just switched from an iPhone 4 to an S4 and so far the experience has been great, however, I wanted to know if there's a way to run 'Pure Android' on it.
From what I THINK I know, Samsung's version of android has a bunch of pre-installed crap. Call me crazy but this bothers me, I just want a clean OS, and that's something I liked about iOS. I don't know if it has any other limitations, I haven't gotten that far into it yet, except from the home dock being locked.
Anyway, I'm a complete Android noob, but I can follow clear instructions.
Is it even possible to do what I'm after? Is there a clean, safe and fast way of doing it for somebody like me that doesn't know much about these things?
Also, I don't have access to a PC as I am a mac user.

If you can't wait for the Galaxy S4 Google Edition , why don't you just buy LG Google Nexus 4 instead of Galaxy S4 before that ?

The S4 is still pretty new so development is still picking up, but AOSP roms are supposed to give you that pure android experience. Cyanogenmod (CM), AOKP and others add some great tweaks and settings for further customizations. You can check the Original Android Development for Cyanogenmod and AOKP, but I would suggest you wait a while as things are still being improved. They should get more stable soon and have clean and clear installation methods.
Android differs from iOS in that you get a lot of customization options. Different people have different choices and android can be adapted for anyone. Some like the pure android experience and go for either a Nexus phone, which is pure android, or install an AOSP rom on their non-nexus phone.
Some people like Samsung's Touchwiz while others do not. Other roms add even further customizations, etc. Welcome to android..!

[Q] Have I bought the wrong phone?

hi guys,
my samsung galaxy s2 has been giving me a lot of problems lately (signal issues and cracked screen). I couldn't afford the latest handset, so after reading up lots of reviews about google nexus 4, I bought it from ebay.
The phone is most definitely fast (Android 4.3), but many odd features to give you easy access are missing...I assume this is because it's a stock rom?
I want the theme/menus of the phone to look similar a samsung galaxy s2/s3/s4. Is there a way of doing this without flashing a totally new rom to it?
Thank you for your help
To get a full samsung experience such as in setting/laucher/etc to work you need to have samsung framework..which is a lot of work. You can try and search around the forum but I don't think anyone here bought the phone for samsung experience. The best you can do is apply touchwiz theme but that requires you to flash custom roms. For tw launcher you can try this here. Just search around and you'll definitely find something you can use.
Thank you for your quick reply arffrhn.
I don't want to flash a custom rom...at least not for a while. I think I might have described it wrong mate as I don't want touchwiz.
Let me start again....The samsung s2 that I have is running on a custom rom called neatrom....Have you heard of it? I really like it's style as it's very simple and looks cool with colours and dialpad.
But instead of putting on a custom rom, Is there a theme that I can use so that I can change the dialpad style/colour and menu looks etc?
You can try xposed framework and try out some themes. That's the best way to customize your phone without flashing any roms imo.
Try Paranoid Android or carbon custom rom; it comes with lots of tweaks and custom features.

Try a custom ROM and take your conclusions.
I've had a galaxy s2 and my Nexus 4 is better in so many ways

[Q] Rooting my Note3, what and how now?

Hey guys, just a quick question. Please please excuse me for I am definitely a noob, but I've done some research about rooting and what it offers yet I still don't know how to use it. It feels much like learning how to drive a stick... understanding in theory, but difficult in application until practice. My note 3 is rooted, but I still have no idea what and how much I can do from here. Not to mention, while I'm doing research and trying to educate myself, there are some names and terms I do not understand. Anyway, let me just write some of the questions I have in a list:
1) Cyanogenmod. Is it available for verizon note 3 running 4.3? I keep getting search results that there are while the cyanogenmod website itself doesn't offer it? I also got a Nexus 7 to try to expand my knowledge in this field, and it does have cyanogenmod installed. Now, to my understanding, it runs side by side with the Android OS while it basically strips the device's bloatware, giving you the pure, simple, raw experience of Android OS. If I were to install cyanogenmod to the note 3, how would it affect the camera functions and the s pen functions? The reason why I ask about the camera is because using my Nexus's camera and looking at some youtube videos of note 2's with cyanogenmod, it seems like it would actually be a downgrade from the note 3's stock camera. And as far as the S pen goes, I've realized that I would lose the action notes, s notes, and sketchbook for galaxy apps, wouldn't I? How could I go around that?
2) Flashing ROMS. What exactly does this do? All I can find is that it allows me to customize my phone, but I don't seem to understand to what extent.
3) Kernels. What are these?
Lol, so sorry for such basic questions. But I would really really appreciate your patience and information!
CyanogenMod is unofficially available for the Note 3. Not everything works. CyanogenMod is a ROM that changes the software on the phone. It's a more customized version of Android, and very close to "stock". If you use CyanogenMod however, you will lose your S-Pen and it's features, along with all of the other TouchWiz features of the phone (gestures, split screen, etc.). The S-pen will act as a basic mouse pointer. CyanogenMod is not pure AOSP, it's quite far from it. It's similar, but very different from a pure Google experience. It's really a beast of it's own in my opinion, and is now a stand alone company that will seek to profit off of the ROM (likely by coming standard on some devices). That's not to say it isn't good, I run it on most of my other devices but on the Note 3, without the S-Pen it's just a big phone.
ROM's are customized versions of Android typically created by a developer or group of developers. The features of each ROM will change. A 4.3 TouchWiz rom might remove all of the carrier bloat (applications not likely used, but run in the background and offer little no actual use to anyone). They'll also provide enhancements and tweaks that make life a little easier like a quick-access flashlight tied to your volume up button, or the ability to remove certain icons from the notification panel, a batter percentage indicator in the notification panel, removing the exchange security permissions, or just general speed improvements over the factory settings. There are many advantages to a ROM and once you use them you'll likely never go back to stock. The ROM features are typically listed in the ROM's topic.
There are many ROM's out there for many different devices, so make sure you only install one that is made for your phone. You'll also hear about AOSP ROM's, these are stock or close-to-stock versions of Android, typically found on Nexus devices. The way Google intended Android to be used.
Android uses a Linux Kernal. It's a customized version of Linux. It's the base operating system behind Android. Similar to ROM's, different kernals can offer different levels of customization, however they won't be as prevalent as a ROM since they deal more with the core of the operating system. The Kernal will manage the drivers for all the different components of the phone, like your radios (how you receive a phone signal), your sensors, camera, CPU, etc. Be especially careful when changing Kernals, it can drastically affect your phone, and possibly permanently.
I'll put in the caveat that this is my understanding, and may not be 100% accurate. People are welcome to correct my mistakes and misunderstandings I may have =)
I hope you find it helpful!
Thank you for your response and information!
Okay, so I guess Cyanogenmod for the Note 3 is not an option for me since I enjoy using my S pen (I mean, why else would I have gotten the phone in the first place haha)
Could you direct me to some useful ROMs or recommend me some? The thing is, I had the Motorola Droid as my first smartphone and never really got into rooting or anything, and when I got the iPhone 4s, that's when I started learning about jailbreaking and got pretty good at it too. Now that I'm back to Android and learning about root, I've realized just how.. simple and basic jailbreaking is compared to rooting. So, would these ROMs be similar to tweaks you can get from the Cydia store in, let's say, behavior of the phone?
I don't think I would want to mess with kernels for a long while either, not until I get more acquainted with rooting in general.

Well first thing you need is safestrap so you can actually flash a ROM link here
This allows you to create limited size slots to flash a ROM to without effecting the stock ROM. There is a way around the size limitation of the slots, but I wouldn't worry about that yet. Just get a feel for it first before you risk bricking.
As for a ROM, head on over to the android development section and pick one. They all have great descriptions of what they have and what they don't. Personally I run hyperdrive and it makes a great daily driver. Still has enough of the original Samsung stuff to look like a Note 3 but allows you to tweak it much further. There are plenty others, and that's the beauty of safestrap, flash to your heart a content until you find one you like.
Kernals aren't something to worry about yet because the boot loader is still locked, limiting our ability to flash a kernal or a custom recovery at that. Unless something has changed that is... Has it? Did it get unlocked while I was asleep.
I you ever get stuck, search then ask. You might also want to read about ODIN here. since you're already rooted some of this doesn't pertain to you, but is still a good read as ODIN will help you recover from some problems.
Hope that helped.

The only option with Safestrap and therefore on newer Verizon Note 3's is a ROM based on stock, so Cyanogenmod isn't an option at all.
I would consider Hyperdrive. Enhanced app windowing options, Xposed framework to get rid of earphone hearing damage warning and never ending reminder about how to clear default apps and tons of little customizations. Getting rid of boot sound is reason enough for me.
Other things on your checklist whether you get a custom ROM or not is Adaware, which you can download on xda to block ads. Need Titanium Backup to back up apps with data, something you can't do without root and very useful when switching ROMs or phones. Lots of other useful tools like Root Explorer on Google Play. If you stick with your stock ROM, do the mod to allow free tethering for Wi-Fi.
Since you like your S Pen, you need Pen Window Manager, available on Play to choose for yourself which apps can run in a pen window. That was one of the big reasons I wanted to root this phone.
By the way, once you find a ROM you like, it's best to nandroid back it up, backup the stock ROM for safety, then restore your custom ROM to the Safestrap stock slot. The ROM 1-4 slots have limited storage so not great long term solution if you have a lot of apps, etc.

Stock / Non Annoying Android?

Hi,
I'm a longtime iOS user that just bought a galaxy s5 to see if it was good for me, I however have been disappointed because of all the annoying software that comes preloaded that slows the phone down, I tried out a nexus 5 and loved it however I had received the international version which wouldn't work with Sprint, so I thought I'd try the S5 and I like it except I wish it was more like the nexus 5(non-laggy, etc...) so now I'm curious...is there anything out there that will turn the sgs5 basically into stock Android like nexus 5? How do I install them? I couldn't find any reliables build on cyanogenmod nor could I figure out how to backup in case I wanted to revert back to standard android that came with it...I don't know if I put enough research into finding what I'm looking for but I googled and read stuff that I didn't quite understand most of the day. Any help would be very appreciated.
Sorry to ask such a dumb question to those who are going to troll.
Search XDA for s5 debloat or similar, it will give you a list of what can be removed, and I think there are some debloat tools as well.
Try this on for size should be right up your alley http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2857451

Going Note 4 from GS3 as looks like Note 5 not fitting bill

I need to replace my GS3, rooted, and it appears that the Note 5 will not have a removable battery. That is the deal breaker for me. I could live without SD slot with 128GB internal but would rather have SD. I really can't wait as the GS3 has issues with charging port and the SD card constantly un-mounting and remounting. I have a USB port to solder in and a new headset jack but will do that after getting the Note 4. I want Samsung because I use the Multi-Window all the time for my Valentine 1 radar detector app (another V1app) and Waze. My hesitation is that Siedio does not plan to make an Obex waterproof case for the Note 4. If through some miracle Samsung keeps the removable battery and sd card for the Note 5, and perhaps waterproofs it, then I will use my wife's upgrade for it and give her the Note 4. My only other options look like the GS5 or Note 3. With my must haves of removable battery, and Samsung multi-window (and sd slot) does anyone see a different alternative that I have overlooked?
Sounds like you've summed it up for yourself and know what's out there/what suits your needs.
I'd go with the Note 4 or GS5. If samsung doesn't at least return the SD card slot to us, then I see myself with the Note 4 longer then I've ever been with a phone.
I just switched from the Note 3 to the Note 4. Was going to get the Note 5 but then I couldn't get a 10,000 mAh battery from ZeroLemon nor use my 128gb MicroSD card.
Nope, I too foster similar requirements (sans multi-window - I've migrated away from TouchWiz since the early days of my previous and first Android device, the GS3). I got my Note 4 and love it... I think that you will be happy with the decision.

Thanks for all the replies. I just wanted to make sure that I was not missing something. I'm going to get the Note 4. Now I just need to convince Siedio to make a waterproof Obex for it; Fat chance. I see there are a few other options for waterproofing and I may go that route. My GS3 is huge with the Obex but I don't mind geeking it on the belt clip. I may just get their regular Dilex case and a different waterproof one for canoeing etc.
Now, KitKat or Lollipop
Shopping I see I can get the Note 4 from BestBuy with KitKat but if I go to the Sprint corporate store, or a franchise, I'll get Lollipop. I plan to root but I am not a constant ROM upgrade guy. My GS3 I rooted right when I got it, then I flashed only once more to ND8. Both just stock rooted with hotspot. Each time I have to spend a day reading on XDA and asking questions if needed. I have Xposed for a couple of app mods now on the GS3. I will run touchwiz on the Note 4 because I want the multi-window. I have read through a few of the threads including the downgrade to Kitkat one. Should I get KitKat and run a stock rooted ROM or go ahead with Lollipop stock rooted? I really appreciate those who can offer their recommendations as I don't have time to spend all day reading through threads and trying multiple searches. Thanks clicks await.

Where you get information about the note 5. Samsung would lose sales if they change there note series. Galaxy needed the change the note series don't. I be surprised if they go s6 route. The note series made like the s6 would be over 1200 dollars up to 1500 depending on storage. They wouldn't sell many phones at that price. It's already expensive now on a 2 year or monthly payments. I'll laugh if i see 599 with 2 year agreement or 89 a month for a phone.

Just about every prediction out there, google, indicates dropping both sd card and removable battery. I hope they are wrong but tend to think they will screw the pooch on the Note 5. I need a phone now, based on the predictions I will get the Note 4. If I could hold out 4 months I would but the GS3 is tired and wonky. Big companies like Samsung rarely listen to enthusiasts, they go with the numbers dorks. The development lead guy for the Note series, if he castrates the Note 5 by removing its gonads, need to be executed by anti-aircraft gunfire. Just like the North Korean Defense Minister, who made the fatal error of taking a nap during a meeting with the ruthless narcissist, Kim Jon Un.
I just don't think they would do that to note users. We are power users and that's the point of the note series IMO. FINGERS CROSSED AND HOLDING MY N4 TIGHTLY
I can't see how the price will stay the same if they go the s6 route. That would be one expensive phone and pricey phones over 1200 won't move far. I don't care how long your money is 1200 for a phone not made of gold is just plain dumb. I just can't remember ever hearing anyone complain about the note series build quality. Even in phone reviews. But if the world we live in anything is possible so i wouldn't be surprised if they did and i wouldn't buy it period. Fingers crossed
I picked up the Note 4 at lunch and it's now rooted via Odin and CF-Auto-Root. One of the salesman at the Sprint Corporate store deflated when I told him that I would not bother waiting on the Note 5 as it appears to already be castrated. He pulled out his Note 4 and said he had 6 batteries and a 128GB sd card and agreed that he will probably be using the Note 4 for a long time.
I'm now looking to flash a near stock rooted rom. I want Knox gone and I want a bunch of bloat gone. I have been using an app called Multi-Window Manager to modify the multi-window to include the apps I want. It depends on Exposed Framework. I will have to wait for the masters to make that happen or shop for a different app that does not need it. Does such a thing exist? Now off to Android Development to shop ROM's. Thanks for the help!
Welcome to the sprint Note 4 forums David. I think you made the right choice. The Note 4 is a great phone and will do anything and everything you need it to do for at least the duration of your contract. By then you can decide if you want a new phone or keep the Note 4. I personally think the Note 4 will serve a lot of people for a long time... definetely for at least two years. There's not much that you'll need to mod or change to be perfectly happy with the note 4. It's awesome straight out of the box. You have a few options for custom/stock roms and any one of them will be great. My rom project is out of commission for a while until I get ready for a new release and update my rom thread. I'm stepping back and taking a different approach with the next release of my rom. There's just SOOOOO many things that can be modded & themed on this phone that's it can be overwelming and definetely time consuming to build roms and port things, do mod etc.
You should definetely consider running Lollipop as it is much more optimized than kitKat and rom development, mods, themes, etc will be more available for Lollipop and newer software versions.
Thanks Tex! Lollipop came out on top after reading in the Development forum. I Odined twrp and transferred your Stock rooted Odexed ROM to my sd card. I'm about to flash it but trying to find the hotspot mod to flash it right afterward. I just read your whole stock rooted bob7 thread and saw hints of adding any app to the Multi-window feature. I used Multi-Window manager before but it requires Exposed Framework. I'll also be watching for your next ROM. I want to ditch a bunch of apps including knox and all Sprint and most Samsung apps. I am tempted to try a de-bloated ROM but want Multi-Window which means Touchwiz. I also want the S-pen to work even though I don't really know how much I will use it. I could just follow the 'Running list of Note 4... safe to remove' thread but it seems incomplete.
Thanks for your hard work!

Be careful with debloating yourself. there's several apk's that are necessary for other apps to work. there's really no need to remove anything other than known bloat apps. Leave everything else alone or you could debloat yourself into some problems. Not to toot my own horn but this ROM might fit the bill for you. There are a few other ROMs here in the forums so look around. Hotspot mod is already included in both of those roms. If you browse my AFH Lollipop mods folder you will find a flashable zip for the hotspot mod but if you're on the stock odexed rom you will need to manually remove an odex file in order for it to work. More details on how to do this can be found HERE.
I'm downloading the Hybrid X Series 2.0 Base Odexed ROM you linked below. You say it has the hotspot mod. Does your Stock_Rooted_NoKnox_N910PSPT1BOB7_SPR.zip have the hotspot mod? Or do I have to flash the Deodexed_N915PSPT2BOC8_N915PVPU2BOC8_Hotspot Mod.zip using the instructions you linked to remove the .odex file? For the Hybrid X where can i read about it's features? The KitKat based Hybrid X Series (Dark Themed) ROM thread is closed. Thanks again!

TheStock_Rooted_NoKnox_N910PSPT1BOB7_SPR is a completely stock rom with no mods or enabled hotspot.
Deodexed_N915PSPT2BOC8_N915PVPU2BOC8_Hotspot Mod.zip is ONLY for the Sprint note Edge. I pointed yo to that thread only for the instructions which are the same for flashing the correct OB7 hotspot mod on the regularSprint Nore 4. Yes my rom thread is close until i redo my OP and get a new build ready. I'll pm you a link to the rom details.
Hybrid X Series 2.0 Base Odexed is installed and running perfectly. Made flipboard Google games-music-news-magazine-...all go away. I use their search engine and calendar. What about Sprint Zone? Can it go away?
Many thanks to tx_dbs_tx. I'll donate again when your updates come along as I appreciate the time and effort spent creating ROMS and the help with those new to custom ROMS like me.

You're welcome and thanks for the donation that was awesome of you. As for Sprint Zone, yes you can get rid of it or freeze it if you want. I rarely use it but i do use it when i want to check out things on my account. It's much better than it used to be it it's harmless. I leave it in my ROMs because I don'y want to remove things and cause people to have to search for things to put back into the ROM so they can use those stock features. My rom concept is a little different than other custom ROMs. I make my ROMs the way i like it. I keep all stock Samsung apps and all critical apps in the ROM so that everybody has full features upon flashing. In short, it's a stock rom on steriods. LOL. You can flash it and not have do anything but install your favorite apps and still have that stock look & feel. Take care.
