Battery battery - ROM and Kernel combo - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I used to use psx and hells core,
But I have been lost since pax disapeered.
Any suggestions?

really hoping we get some suggestions here, i'm interested in finding a good combo

ROM is pretty much irrelevant. Features you may enable within the ROM (pocket mode, active display, etc) will make a difference. Kernel tweaks might make a slight bit of difference. But the real culprits for battery drain are apps running in the background and checking for sync updates, screen brightness, and of course actually using the phone. If you have a ton of apps/games on your phone, Greenify combined with a wakelock detector can help you keep them from needlessly draining your battery.
FWIW, I've been using HellSore kernel. Mostly stock settings, although I change the GPU governor to on demand. When idling, I see very little battery drain. When using my phone, battery drains because I have brightness set at 100% and I use LTE. There's no miracle cure for battery life, short of using a bigger battery.

You should test L Android preview. And the best combo I get in kk was purity+ & hellscore kernel. I totally agree with @Planterz.

Am I The Only One ....

...Who seems to be getting worse battery life since I've rooted and installed CM10 and Franco Kernel than stock.
Before with stock I was only losing about 1% every two hours on standby (sometimes even better I've no idea how)
Now I'm losing about 3% an hour on standby and also about 30% an hour screen time with just basic browsing (Screen brightness set to auto).
Also Media server is hammering my battery. Like I lost 3% battery in 15 mins without the screen on just playing music (not streaming) is that normal, I've come from an iphone 4s which didn't lose that in an hour :S
have i flashed it badly is there something else maybe i should try or are these stats about right ????
thanks guys
That's just the way it is just custom roms. When flashing, put your head between your legs and pray for the best. You can spend hours trying to figure out what's gone wrong, but you might never get an answer.
You can try underclocking your N4. Currently my dual-core Snapdragon S3 T-Mo Galaxy S2 is underclocked to 810MHz from 1.5GHz and performance is still great. I'm guessing you can UC your N4 to at least 1.2-1GHz and performance will still be great because of the quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU. Also, what governor and i/o are you using?

Hi Gents
Thanks for the reply, yeah it does seem a bit of a hit and miss kinda situation, I'm not masively bothered, im hoping eventually someone will stumple across a fix for the way the screen murders the battery life but im not holding my breath. Still love the phone, really getting used to it now, have tried (and failed) many times to switch to android, must be honest, this is the closest I've come so far to waving bye bye to ios, android is really really fantastic as an os, it's also super pretty to look at these days, stock apps like contacts, calender and the phone app itself are beautiful.
Let the phone and battery have several cycles, it will improve, eventually
thanks mate !!

Under clocking your phone isn't a viable situation. It's a phone, what's the point in it if you're not going to use it to your fullest when my phone lasts through the whole day going from 384-1500?
Some battery tips for op:
- download better battery stats (Google it for a xda version) use this to debug wakelock and ensure your phone is deep sleeping under cpu states. You can also use cpu spy to check cpu stats. Better battery stats is a must need.
- disable Google latitude in maps. Disable the automatic reporting and any other checked marks
- disable Google now cards that you have no use for
- disable gps (some apps use gps and drains battery when it keeps using gps when it isn't necessary)
- ensure your governor is interactive and on latest version of Franco (r20 is very good)

Just stick with the stock kernel that comes with cm10.

Highly advise doing that. Other kernels are way more optimized whereas CM is focused on the ROM itself and not optimizing the stock kernel.
I believe CM10 uses stock Google kernel anyways (could be wrong).
Use Franco Kernel or anybody elses kernel that you choose to.
Mine definitely improved after rooting and flashing custom ROM. Battery life when I was still stock was horrible.

A ROM has very minimal battery life improvements, it isn't as significant as a kernel. Hence the definition of "better"

Flash Kernel, leave Screen on until battery dead -> find out which ROM/Kernel wins?

Hey there, I thought I would charge my N4 with franco Kernel & Stock ROM too 100% and then leave the screen on until e.g. 5%.. then I will do the same with other Kernels to figure out which one gives me the best on-screen time.
Is this a reliable test to find out which Kernel gives best battery life for me?
Thanks

Moved to Q&A
Well one thing is on screen time could also be subjective.
I can have the screen on and do nothing but idle for hours vs. playing a game or browsing the web that will eat up more power.
If doing it idle then kernel comparison would be who is using a governor that uses less cores on idle or uses the most UV, so pretty much the results will depend on the behavior.
Different kernels feature different things such as, one could be more power saving but less ramp up or performance for gaming while another can be super smooth for gaming and multitasking transitions but consumes a little more power, so pretty much if you're going to be comparing kernels it would be the specific features they present and everyone has to be on the same level as not every version release will have the same setting as previous.
So your best bet for power saving would be one that gives good UV for your specific binning (unless you test your own settings) and maybe underclock if you're not a heavy multitasker/user/gamer etc...
Thanks for moving !
Well I could also make a test with 30minutes gaming, 30 minutes music, 10 minutes video recording, rest on idle with display on?
That would cover pretty much the "whole" package.
I am not gaming much (and I haven't seen a game yet which wouldn't run on N4 anyway). About Multitasking:
1x gmail (calender,contacts + k9mail)
1x gmail (k9mail)
1x facebook
1x friendcaster for contacts sync
1x WhatsApp
1x Skype
maybe 1x AndroIRC with 2 servers connected
But besides that I do the general stuff... listening music, sometimes browsing, checking mails/chatting/texting/writing, Alarmdroid to wake up, sometimes Navigation ;P

As long as you keep the usage consistent, and do equal amounts of time on WiFI and data, that kind of test is fine. You don't need to make sure you test the whole world. Just keep your tests as consistent as possible. What will really burn you up, though, is how fast kernel builds are released. Good luck keeping up.
Well I am only concerned about franco vs faux kernel. Those are the two I can't decide between.
Also I would do the same test again after installing avast.. just to find out if it causes more batter drain or if the gaming performance goes down.

if you care about my opinion in more real world usage under similar conditions, i prefer faux b/c faster and more features. franco is kind of performance limited and it slows down multitasking a lot. battery life is similar maybe a tiny bit better on franco but not worth the performance sacrifice

I would like to make my own with some test.. also including benchmark test I guess.
Will do that this weekend and let u know the results. Generally it seems to be useless anyway.. since one update could change everything :/

[Q] The most battery friendly ROM???

Hello, I just wanted to ask which ROM has the longest battery life (in screen hours)...
The most battery frienly rom i have ever tried was liquidsmooth...
What do you think?
Guys please help out a new N4'er like myself. I'm stock right now and the number of Roms are kinda overwhelming. I'm only interested in battery life. I'm not in the mood to go flashaholic searching for that one ROM.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium HD app
The most important thing is the kernel and the apps you have installed.
Find the ROM with the features you like and flash a battery friendly kernel. I currently use Matrix kernel because the lower CPU idle makes the phone sip battery while the screen is off, leaving you more for actual use.
Good luck. Also, INB4L.
There is no "best Rom" for battery. It's all in how you use your phone, what apps you use, the signal strength in your area and of course the kernel you flash and how you set that kernel up.
100 different people could reply with the Rom they feel is best for battery and which kernel and you still may have different results than they do

From what I've learnt the kernel directly dictates battery life.
but I've personally opted for lean roms. If you're using a heavy rom and frequently putting load on the processor surely the battery will burn down fast. I've been using rasbeanjelly bouncing between franco/trinity and the battery life has been awesome for me.
Btw franco's r121 is godlike for me right now, in terms of both performance and battery life.
Im using liquidsmooth which comes with matrix kernel in the official release.
Im getting very good battery life probably because the cpu min is lowered to 288mhz instead of the normal 384.
Performance on the rom is great also with antutu scores over 20000
Ive tried francos, for some reason it didnt quite work for me but it is very popular because of the great balance between battery and performance. Youll get even more battery life out of faux and if you want blazing fast speeds try out trinity
Battery depends on the kernel, not on the rom.
Battery life depends on a number of factors, kernel being one of them. If you set your screen brightness at maximum high, you will see battery drain like water down the toilet. Screen brightness is the single major factor. Kernels don't really matter. It's the apps you install and run on your phone that can kill battery life. Apps like Facebook will suck down your battery like there's no tomorrow. Auto sync'ing and pushing and pulling data to and from your phone will make your battery life go down really fast. GPS and using google maps can contribute mightily to your battery woes as well.
To keep your phone from dying, just get an external battery pack and charge your phone as necessary. I have a 5400 mAh pack that can charge my n4 at least a couple of times. I never worry about running out of battery and I use my phone the way it's supposed to be used.

Battery does depend on the rom...
For example a linaro compiled rom will require less work of the cpu to move the os due the optimization.
Also some rom have init.d scripts that can help battery life a lot and there is the possibility that some programs like systemUI can have a little bug that the user dont know about it but its draining battery
The battery life depends on a lot of factors of the rom

You are completely wrong. As said before, battery life depends on a lot of things. The kernel is a big factor, but not everything. The way u use ur cpu, the scripts u apply or ur build.prop configurarion can be very decissive.
IMHO paranoidandroid 3.1 is the most battery saving ROM

[Q] Franco r65 Kernel Settings

Anyone got any good r65 kernel settings for battery optimized? I love the Franco Kernel but my battery life is lacking. Especially when its in standby mode with the cover closed.
BTW, Im running PA 3.65 and downloading 3.67 as I type this..
The default settings are actually about as good as it gets, short of underclocking. You might consider trying another ROM to see if your battery problem improves at all. I liked PA a lot, but even without HALO my battery life was terrible.

Use better battery stats to see what is keeping your device awake, it should use very little power in sleep.
May try using one of many apps that can turn off wifi in sleep and check out greenify.
This may not be exactly what you want to hear, but I switched over to Aospal, a linaro version of PA. I have had significantly better performance and battery, both of which vanilla pa failed to deliver. I also am using m kernel, and I lowered the CPU frequency cap to 1200 MHz. I am using otherwise its default settings. My battery life is more than doubled from when I was using vanilla pa. So if you are interested in switching, (it still has everything from pa!) this is working for me.

Thanks for the insight on that. I guess I will give it a try and see how the battery life is.

Currently using r65 and coudnt complain about the battery.
While checking out roms, you could also look at apps you install. Some very poorly coded apps (especially facebook) would just eat up your battery, and use a lot of memory.

What's the best way to get the best battery life ?

I'm looking a way to improve my battery life I'm running android nougat 7.1.1 please help tell me ROM kernels tweaks ect. Thanks

Flashing Franco's Kernel (which is geared towards extending battery life) and Franco's Nap Time (which puts your phone in deep doze mode as soon as the screen goes off) will give you better battery life, but with a trade-off negativity affecting the performance and functionality of your phone. You have to decide how important extending battery life is to you.

Pure Nexus ROM
Flash or ElementalX kernel

I use Cortex Rom, I see someone else recommended Pure Nexus, which I think is an insanely overrated Rom. I've never used a rom to improve battery life but Pure Nexus gave me crap battery life compared with stock and was buggy to boot. The downside with Naptime is that everything pretty much stops working when the screen is off unless you exempt the app from power saving. That includes music playing apps, email apps, text messaging apps--whatever you want to work you need to exempt from power saving. If you let Nap Time turn off your proximity sensors then the only way to get your phone back in on is by hitting the power button.
