Idiot location request by samsung (they are very low) - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Question: any way i can update my weather widget without giving samsung my location? This is insane.
They are that low that they need to spy us like every day? Not even google/lg/htc are asking for this ****.. only on samsung you need to activate your location to update the weather widget.
How is this legal? I mean our privacy doesn't matter at all anymore?
Is there any solution for using original samsung weather widget without location? Now i'm starting to see why all the people replace the samsung's crappy weather widget. I'm already looking for other widget and i think it's time to get rid of all samsung crappy apps # bloatware from MY phone.
If anyone have solutions for using the original weather widget(not the modified transparent one from theme section) without needing to activate location..please answer.
The lowest part in all this problem is that if i use a wifi network that will get the job hard for samsung to get my location... they won;t update my weather widget. They will ask for gps and more bull****. This is so low.. that i'm considering getting rid of this idiot device.
One plus one time getting closer and closer.

Really? Tin Foil hat on a bit tight today? How can you get weather if the device doesn't know where to give the weather for?
Accuweather, Weatherunderground and Weatherbug all need a location. This has been the cas on the last 5 smartphones I have used from different makers. LG, HTC and Samsung.

Lol! Are you for real???

Doesn't bother me. Nobody gives a **** where I am and I don't give a **** what the weather's doing.

Hey OP, better not text, tweet, or email. All that gets recorded as well

Huhmm, You'd better use another app (widget) than try to change annoying thing that exists by default.

How can you ask for a accurate weather predicton without the phone knowing what your location is? If that is a problem for you you may consider another phone OS besides Android, iOS, WP8. Just look into the permissions you grant when you install apps. Good luck.
PS: don`t kid yourself, there is no privacy anymore. Big brother is watching you all the time

Here is another idea: Get a weather forecast stick.
Put the weather forecast stick outside.
If it is wet, it is raining.
If it is white, it is snowing.

OP is just trolling, don't be fooled

hehe.. for people like you is very ok to give your location. i think that's why everyone is colecting data . because you don't care. in this way at android 4.5 you will be recorded in secret directly from the bedroom/bathroom
funny part is that if someone is pissed by how samsung is spying people.. you jump and rip apart that man. now.this is the world. Okei guys. make sure you take some nasty photos wity your s5. Because you can;t ever know when you will end up like jennifer lewrence and other powerfull smartphone users
Until than.. i found out the easyest solution. I won't use internet on my idiot device. That way..samsung can ****** . Consider whatever you want instead of that stars
And by the way..for all that asked how to update the weather without giving up location... well..ask any Lg user  . It is very easy.
But not.. so far the galaxy series have:
idiot knox™
location and gps needed for updating weather™
some backdoors™ (they found at..s4/s3/note/etc? if i'm remembering right)
selinux™ - more powerfull than ever
and etc
And all this is for keeping the user safe. Like real safe. You can even jump from a plane with your galaxy in your pocket. And you wont die. Just try it  . And if you get injuries..no worry. The gps and location services are there for you. With galaxy s6 samsung will introduce smart™ rescue  (of course it's based on location aproval with both wi-fi and gps)
ps: if someone quotes this post or start to argue i feel sorry already for them. they don't understood and they most likely won't ever understand.

I have a suggestion for the OP, buy a different phone and stop worrying about it. You think LG, HTC, and Motorola are any different?

Some people are destined for great things.....
Others are destined to live in lead lined bunkers eating tinned beans for the rest of time hiding from big brother.
Ps. .... I like the sound of smart rescue...... shame apple have a patent on it.

well, i never ceases to amaze me how people these days just EXPECT someone to bow down and do everything for them.
if you know what youre looking for find it and make it work. this isnt the 8th grade anymore, nobody's going to hold your hand and do it for you.

heres another good one, its available on the marketplace for FREE

Too many 'tards on this forum clogging the pages.
I mean, who'd be so green to think they're getting their phone back after it's stolen? The police aren't interested in your car when it gets taken, even if it is an "expensive one". And your phone costs less than a single tyre for that car.
And if you're thinking of getting it back yourself then you'll have to be pretty 'ard. In fact so 'ard that no one would steal it in the first place lol
Anyway, I don't know about your country's (I have my suspicions) TMobile but in my land when you report a phone stolen ALL of the networks block it. So anyone who knows their s**t will take it to another country to sell.
So how much do you want to spend on airplane tickets ?
Why not just get insurance, it's worked for car owners before. Or you could try not worrying about it, maybe you'll lead a happier life lol
XDA is emulating PPCGeeks more and more each day.

So which default to Tower location if no GPS?
1 - Remote tracker
2 - Phone Creep
3 - smart phone tracker
4 - smart protect
5 - ultimate theft alert
6 - sprite terminator
7 - guard mobile (maspware)
Which of these will default to tower or triangulated location if no GPS fix available? I use Terminator but it requires GPS lock. Looking for alternative to AT&T FamilyMap that will try to use GPS but still provide a position circle if GPS cannot lock. Need to track Tilt 2, Fuze, and Moto Tundra (non WM). Don't even mind payng for an app (one-time) versus $15/month for FamilyMap.

Security Issues...?

Just read this piece of information...
http://www.thisandroidlife.com/2010...om-infected-iphones-and-android-handsets.html
I've always thought about this ever since a buddy of mine coded a little bot to do about the same thing to an online game.
Anyway, the real question I guess is, What can be done to prevent these types of thing from happening? What do you think?
Doesnt Android tell you everything a program is going to access before it's installed? I ALWAYS read that.
The only thing that this article is trying to point out is that non tech savvy users, which are probably a lot of Smartphone users won't really understand or care to know the "details" of the apps and what its all going to do, as such; they're more prone to installing these malicious apps. On top of that, they were showcasing that right now, they've only taken the GPS coordinates from the phone, but if they wanted to - passwords, messages, etc could be taken from the phone without anyone ever knowing.
I think this is good, it makes people more aware and allows us to be more cautious. Not mention, it's becoming obvious that Mobile data/traffic is easy to target and probably even easier to trick users (than on computers) because of lack of security and the notion that ones' phone cannot be "hacked" or what not.
hm
i had to go threw SlideMe.org to get a app because my bank blocked Android Market lol anyway. They sent out a server wide warning that app was bad last night.
BTW is there an app which logs where and what your phone sends? Like "littlesnitch"?
http://tinyurl.com/o9568k
There's not much that can be done about this, and it's a perfectly legitimate threat.
Yes, the app DOES tell you what it will be doing, but nearly any app that has Network access and Fine Location, especially if it does grab your GPS coordinates for something in the app itself, could send stuff behind the scenes and you'd be completely unaware.
I definitely don't think this will be the last time we'll hear about this sort of malicious app.

Of course but you don't know EXACTLY what the app is doing with the info(unless you tear it apart).Like in the example a weather widget,of course its going to use gps.So what if another app that can access your phones info that would typically need to, but is broadcasting that info to a remote server. If you get what I'm, trying to get at.
Edit: What kmart said...lol
The only truly saving grace of these phones about the sensitivity of location awareness with respect to paranoia of the same, is that we can pull the battery and remove any doubt that the phone cannot disclose its function or location.
There was an article I read a while ago that the Fed's had issued over 3 million location requests last year to Sprint on users - warrant-less! How's that for Paranoia!!!
But all these apps in the market has the Buyer Beware tag so, of course at some point or another it will be exploited! For the most part, the idea of location awareness and marketing/advertisement and or service oriented provisioning is a great concept. The openness of the Android system to provide the same - will undoubtedly have it's shortfalls. A Good Firewall app that notifies and asks for approval prior to transmitting info or accepting connections from an app would go a long way to controlling potential problems. Just like a PC, which basically these phones have become.
well, considering I don't go on any financial sites from my phone, there's not much they can get off it...do they want my school email password? Have at it...they can read those worthless emails if they want (heck, even send a nice threatening email to my profressors for all I care lol).
Not to mention that my phone gets wiped a few times a week, just like so many other people here, there's not much they can get unless they can manage to hack into my google account and steal my credit card info...in which case, they won't be able to spend much on that account, since there's nothing in it lol.
This is as bad as "big brother" listening to my phone calls. What do I care? lol. If someone wants to know where I am, then by all means, let them know where I am. I'm not doing anything of interest to them.
On a side note, we apparently have caught the attention of the mods in this sub-forum, and have become a "family forum" according to a different thread lol.

Hey Tatonka! Lol, wassup? hahaha, but if you could, please elaborate? I know it's off topic, but I'm happy to be apart of the Android Family hehe...
And oh... is there any PGP type Android app that anyone might be familiar with? Lol, just thinking about it with this topic, lol...
I was thinking about that 'Firewall App' idea.Maybe that could be done,it would definitely be something worth looking into.
In response to totonka's post,i hear you.I'm the same way,BUT there are plenty of people who do have sensitive info/files/pictures(you know what I'm talking about) that surely wouldn't want ANYone to have access to.That's just how it is.I'm just thinking of the tons of people who don't even know that this is even possible.

My thoughts also, but I don't know if it is a true Firewall or just handles calls...
A security issue is still a security issue even if it doesn't affect you, and an invasion of privacy is still an invasion of privacy even if you don't care about it. Not trying to start any sort of flame here, please don't take it that way. Just mean to say that if you wait to take a stance on a known problem until it becomes YOUR problem, haven't you maybe waited too long?

Suggestion: Kid Friendly Home

Hi devs,
I was wondering... maybe there is "an app for that", but I have not seen it..
I will be updating to the newest greatest android phone when it is released for Sprint / CDMA. But what will I do with the beloved HERO?
I was thinking it would be great for my kid; or kids in general as a:
for younger kids: MP3, Movie, Internet, GPS, Photo device
for older kids: a cell phone / leash.
But there are some things I dont want my kid to have access too. I want to limit the phone and give only access to only necessary functions.
So, here is my request/suggestion:
Have a "Home" app that can lock down the phone's functions. The parent can turn off/on the functions that they want the kid to have.
-Lock down the Dialer or make it invisible.
-have only calls to short cuts "people"
-911...
-GPS always on
-Text limitations.
-use a software like "wavesecure" to look at the phones activities.
-app to see where they are and where they have been.
-set timer on some functions: like can make calls / text on weekends only.
-Limit access to the "Market"
-Limit access to the Internet (kid friendly).
-ability for us to call the phone, it auto answer, speaker on, and not show any trace of it being on. ( )
(just to name a few options)
This might be a great app that sells a lot.
Lol...
some of them sound a bit erm controlling but im not a parent what do i know..
I think the internet is semi-censored by your phone internet provider when on 3g(Dont think so on wifi). Was for me anyways!
yes.. I agree.. it is very controlling and big brother feel to my request.
But .. as a parent.. I want to know..
and Knowledge is power
and better for my peace of mind.
Till they are out of the house.. I WANT TO KNOW.
I dont want to be one of the parents.. after the fact..
and say to myself.. "i wish i had known"

my kid is 6 .
yes, as they get older. you try to teach them good decision making. and with that you give them more freedom and responsibility. Which they must earn, not an age-given right. OF COURSE: each kid is different and different situations.
I will then give them back more rights. I will release control over certain areas. Till finally they are out in the world and trying to make their way. And I will just sit back and be their safety net, if they need it. Praying that I was able to teach them and give them the skills to make good decisions.
Till then.. I want to know... so that I can help guide them away from harm.
similar to a 16 yr old chatting online..
and you not watching what they are doing..
Or texting message, with photos of themselves... in not so good pictures.
we have all read and heard of these bad situations in the news.

ah, so they are....so do the credit card companies....and the network carriers oh and you should know the kind of information those wee loyalty cards for supermarkets gather is staggering
I couldnt care less to be honest, the whole point of this is that yes infomation about you is taken and stored on a gigantic scale, but that info on my credit cards, my store cards my carrier usage and my WP7 isnt available to anyone but the servers they reside on.
That is the fundermental difference between MS and Apple.

Hehe, no me either, just a conv starter.
On a related note, police have been using the iPhone location list (held on the phone itself, unlike wp7) to tie user to location when investigating crimes, tomtom have sold harvested driving data to Dutch police who have used it to set up speed trap stings, and two women have filed a $50mil suit against Google for harvesting their data.(not gonna fly, of course, but interesting none the less) a few days after a similar suit against apple.
As per above post tho, store cards are the big one, hugely intrusive, many hundreds of terrabytes of info every year.

fixed.
And they make money by sending adds to your phone. In the future if they know where you are they can send adds from nearby shops to your device. Yup you are paying them to send you spam.
Spam but maybe not
Well if they actually get it right then maybe the ads will be helpful.
If I am in the mall to buy a pair of Jean and I get a link sent to my phone telling me that I can get 15% off at this store and 2 for 1 at that store, well good for me and them.
Also I live a vanilla life so who cares; the only people that are worried are the pervs, cheaters, and such that are afraid of getting caught.
Now I wouldn't mind that much as long as it was pertinent to my needs and consistent with my location and timing. How are you getting those ads? Texts?
I've been getting a bunch of spam calls and texts here lately and I do not list my cell number anywhere! So it must be from WP7. Am I right? I mean my number is listed in the donotcall.gov
Wow I didn't know they track android to.
Well now everyone knows that Windows Phone tracks your location and it will be saved.
Now the question is: Does anyone know how to turn it off? ^^

If you read that article and most importand others like that in the web you will be notice that:
1. Apple - Tracks you and keep the data for a year or more. And the most importand is that
anyone who can get the hands on your phone can see all the places you where
for a year !!!!!!!!!!!!
2. Android - Keeps your data for a week
3. WP7 --Keeps ONLY one record and it replace it with the next one
THATS THE BIG DIFFERENTS

Yes m8 ...i have the source ..its a source that i trust for some 20 years now...
Its Zdnet PC Magazine
from the article "
Microsoft told PCMag unequivocally that phones running Windows Phone 7 do not store location history
Microsoft says its "Find My Phone" service keeps only the phone's most recent location."
The big picture here is that Apple has lie on this matter ...
Six months ago when they say (i think) in a congress hearing that "We are not tracking location at all"
And still they say the same lie in a recent article in the "Apple's Media Center" aka Engadget blog..
This is a big big problem for me....
If anyone who can have my phone for 1 min can see where i was for the last 6 moths or a year with every detail in map....oh man ...this is bad .
This Orwel Big Brother mutliply x 1000. We have to fight against this.
The big blogs arrount the net have made a kind of omerta on this ...just an article and no more.
Probably the adds (money) from Apple are to big to start a fight ...
But this is not journalism... OK Apple is cool ..but where is your integridy as writer or as big internet blog ????
Where are all those guys that tear apart MS or any other company for minors problem ????
Thats the problem for me...Apple did this without anyone knows about it and is still deny it.
This a big big trust issue

Good choice of reading,,,, there's a good editorial on theregister about the legality of even collection, let alone using data harvested from a phone, since it is covered by different laws than, say, a computer, since it falls under the telecommunications act

u'd be surprised , but its not voluntarily done , its the law in the usa they have to track you by telecommunication act 1996 , in effect from 2001 , a phone cant be sold in usa if it doesnt comply

I will have to try to do some reading on that act, thanks for the info.
But even though it is something mandated doesn't mean that the OS makers Apply, Google, and Microsoft are just doing it because of that. Trust me there are hidden agendas here with this whole location tracking thing be it from the government or the private sector.
George OrWell must of been able to see into the future. LOL

Adidas miCoach Smart Run

Too much for too little?
Or, a good training partner updating from Motorola Motoactv?
This review says it's a reskinned Android 4.1.
http://www.engadget.com/2013/11/19/adidas-micoach-smart-run-review/
Upside: heart rate monitor included.
Downside: only 3gb of free space.
i'd call 400$ a downside too...

Did anyone find a jailbreak or a Windows driver to get access to the watch. Support will be closed very soon, seems to be there is no possibility to download GPX tracks from the watch directly.

Also want to know!
I've been talking to Adidas, and they say that my warranty has void, so they cannot do anything about it!!! So annoying...
I threatened them about writing all over the internet the good service they provide! Anybody can help me out? Sites, places to talk real bad about this issue?
It is a shame that a super brand like Adidas don't ensure the usability of their own and expensive products, don't you guys agree?
sorry for the revival - any one know how to bypass the activation on these devices ? had my device reset and now cannot activate - since unable to get token /login...FFS!! So for folks that are still using this - don't reset device or else you'll have a nice paper weight.
haven't found anyway to put the device in debugging mode to maybe at least bypass activation so I can just use the core features (mp3/gps/HRM).
if you remove the rear cover - there is pads for UART/SPI not to sure at this stage - will have to do some digging...
Flash CHIP (4GB) is SAMSUNG KLM4G1YE4C-B001.
Just to keep everybody informed!
After many, many, but many complains on Adidas, and with the good help of the resolver . com, i got my money back after sending the watch to Germany.
The only bad thing was that had to wait for 2 months after they got the watch there, but...
Bastards
Stopping the support before the announced date - thats disgusting!
Never will buy Adidas products again!
I've used mine for several years and now its not the question of money! Still use them as HRM monitor, hoping to find the solution to download other info some day!

Could you please provide more details on how you got your money back? I was just talking to the support today and they told me to speak with Runtastic (why ever, since I doubt that they took over the software development for the watch).

Yeah, they also told me that, but i fought against that argument because i bought it on Adidas (had a proof of that with me) and not on Runtastic, whatever that companies sells, so my complaint was against Adidas.
Also opened a case on Resolver.co.uk, which did help.
And threatened them al the time to spread the news about this nasty behaviour of Adidas All Over the Internet!
Much efforts, but they did compensate at the end.
Hope this can help you

Thanks a lot for sharing. Spoke with the support a few days ago - they told me, they cannot give me an answer right away but want to come back to me via mail. Still waiting for that to happen...

Thanks a lot - guess that's the only thing I can do right now.
From a technical point of view I'm still wondering, why they didn't publish a possibility, to let the issue get fixed by the community (of course I'd expect a company like Adidas to fix it by themselves, but that oviously didn't happen). I'd assume that they change shouldn't be that big, since only the upload target has to be changed - or am I mistaken? And even in the case, that they don't want to publish any details on the watch OS or the app running ontop, it should have been possible to just create a website that accepts MiCoach logins that are trying to publish acitivites and just forward them to the Runtastic site.
Either approch would be better than just pissing off all the people who payed a lot of money for the watch.
Still noone found a possbility to download GPX (or any different format) files? Think this is the only thing which is missing to run standalone ... meanwhile I've many unsynced runs on my(our) watch(es).
