[Q] Ugh.. 4.4.2 I don't like you - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone tell me the easiest way to get my AT&T S4 running 4.4.2, to switch from using 4G, to using 3G? 4G signal at my house sucks. Text messages are not going through, and calls often drop or won't go through at all. And the signal is always at 1 single bar or no bars. And for some reason, in their infinite wisdom, when they came out with 4.4.2 they did away with the ability to easily manually switch to 3G.
Is there some app, or some easy way I can do this? My old 3G Samsung Captivate had great reception at my house.

Bump. Nobody knows? Well perhaps I should be asking about a custom ROM instead then. Which custom ROM is the best these days? I don't want to lose much of the stock look, I'm pretty happy with the way android looks from the factory. But I'm open to something new I guess. Anyone got any screenshots? I don't even know of any of the names of the good ROMs. I seems to remember something about cybermod or cynagen or something, but its been a long time.

I'm not sure how different the AT&T S4 is from the International 4G LTE in terms of software but if you're using the stock rom there's an option in Settings > More Networks > Mobile Networks then Network mode to WCDMA/GSM only. This option is still present on 4.4.2 on my GT-I9505. Is that option missing on your AT&T S4?

Yeah its gone. There are a few greyed out things that you can't do but none of them seem related to what I I'm trying to do. I don't think I like kitkat. Its not just the ATT stuff, its also that they messed around with a lot of the basic functionality and screwed it up. For example, instead of just making it an option in the settings when you're texting, they made the blunder of assigning font enlargement to the side buttons. When it used to be the volume. Now every time I accidentally hit that button, it starts changing the dang text size. There are a lot of little changes for the worse, throughout the OS. I shouldn't have upgraded.

Both my M919 (Tmobile S4) running 4.4.4 and i9505 (International S4) running 4.4.2 have those choices. You bought the wrong brand of S4... ATT sucks, they lock everything thinking everyone is like an iphone user...

I have to use them, the other's coverage area sucks. Maybe I could switch to sprint... don't know if they're any better. For some odd reason when I rebooted the phone I gained back 3 bars, and it started working again. I blame kitkat! So far that version has proven that its a pretty big screw up, so it wouldn't surprise me.

I agree, sometimes we are forced to use whatever is available to us... ATT's signal is good in my area compared to Tmobile, but I hate using ATT's phones because of their locked bootloaders. I use a Tmobile S4 which I bought from amazon, with Straight talk sim card which runs on ATT network.
If ATT don't lock their phones, it would be easy for me to just buy from them and use their network. I think ATT looses sales on us people who are members here in this forum and other sites. but maybe we are a minority and ATT doesn't care.

Oh just wait a while. Tmobile will finally get big, and their coverage area will start to suck less. It will become acceptable, and right about that time, they'll be bought out by ATT. Anyone else see this pattern? Time to invoke monopoly laws and bust up a few carriers if you ask me.

Are both Phones running the same rom, same modems etc?
If yes, then its probably a network issue from TMO themselves, and you should call them to ask them if anything is going on, and if nothing is, they'll either:
1) give you instructions on how to get better signal
2) give you a little modem thing for better signal that you connect on your PC.
i have the little modem thing, its like a little cell tower i was part of the BETA program.
interesting seeing this thread because bout an hour ago I lost my data connection and camt get it back. not this first time this has happened. l
Then for sure its a TMO problem, not yours.
Call them up, ask them whats going on, and get a answer.
It's perfect here in Texas for me.
I had the same problem too, but i went to mobile network via settings and switch network mode to gsm instead of gsm/wdmca or something like that. worked for me.
looks like they fixed it now.....now get all bars
At around 9-10 est I had the same problem. I had full bars but the data was slowed. Its better now though. Maybe some work being done?

I have to set my network settings to wdcma only to avoid constantly switching to edge. I only switch to auto mode when im traveling.

Like some estrange sounds use in movies to simulate Alien voices or some sh** like that,i tough it was my phone,i am running Toxic Fire, but my wise have also heard it and his Vibrant isn't rooted and doesn't have any custom rom,and also my friend which is on AT&T hear it when i call it a few days ago.
And yes Data rates had been to low at times.
Im in florida and had some bad reception issues from like 5pmest Friday till 12pmest Saturday. Don't know if its related or not.

Its spotty. 3g is fast where I live in Framingham, but I noticed in other areas in Framingham 3g is as slow as EDGE, and some places in Newton and Brookline only have EDGE.....I mean its 4G era and we should have almost 100% 3G coverage by now. I dont see the point moving on to 4G, I would be MUCH more happy with full 3G in MA
It happened to me a few times this week (DC Area) and I thought there was something wrong with my phone. After rebooting my phone for a few times, and playing with network mode, and lastly checking my wife's BB, I realized it must have been T-mobile network.
I've had this problem for a while and finally after numerous calls to T-Mo i figured it out.
I live inbetween a crappy Edge tower apparently in the boonie area about a mile away, and also a 3g tower about the same distance in the other direction in civilization.
It constantly switches on me when i'm at home to whatever it feels like, usually edge... I think just to get under my skin on purpose.
When i finally realized that I went to settings - wireless and network - Mobile networks - Network mode - then put it on WCDMA only. Boom 3g all day.
If you happen to go into an area and you lose service, do the same thing, but instead of selecting WCDMA only, put it on auto and you will be able to use edge service as well again.

[Q] LTE preferred

I have huge LTE issues. The coverage where I live is amazing, but my phone will not prefer LTE no matter what I do. Does the phone software just suck or is there something I can do?
LTE only - works, but then I cannot make or receive calls. All other modes will prefer 5.9 bars of 3G over 5.8 bars of LTE. Which doesn't make any sense.
Btw I am on CloudyPro II but I don't think it is a ROM issue because I never had had the phone prefer LTE even though I have almost max LTE everywhere.
I have also tried with fast dormancy enabled and disabled. It makes no difference.
Is there a way to make this phone prefer LTE?
Same problem here. Even though i got 4g on my place, it will connect on edge or 3g. Sometimes i got no signal at all. I dont have thos problem on JB. Im on rooted stock KK international. Is this a kernel or baseband issue?

Hmmm... I had the same problem on JB stock...
Another thing that I noticed is that if I for instance set this phone to LTE/GSM/WCDMA it will go nuts. Sometimes changing between H and 3G almost every second. Just back and forth.
It is almost as if this phone will poll the network several times each second and then prefer the strongest signal while completely disregarding data speed.
First, why are creating new threads when already exist similar topics? Do you read old topics? Maybe it has contained answer

And what could it possibly do? You prefer it to connect to some 5miles fay away LTE cell only if it's speed is faster but your modem will then constantly drop packet and reestablish connection to drain the battery? Or should phone grab a nearest and most powerful signal from 3G cell?
And third, wait for Kitkat, it contains a newer 190084 baseband, maybe it will relieve your pains
Then again, why do you complain here instead of going straight to you operator office? It surely is their fault to tweak their cell wrongfully. We can't change their settings

I have tried with different basebands and in case you didn't read my first post I have full LTE signal (6 of 6 bars) if I force it to pick LTE only. If I don't, it will pick 6 Bars H/3G.
I have also tried many different ROMs and I have checked the settings of the Sim card. It is set to prefer LTE.
Btw, did you read the last post in the thread that you linked to?
With LTE i get a ping of 34 ms and 15/5 Mbps. But the phone will pick a HSDPA connection with 47 ms ping and 6/1 Mbps.
And I am on the stock KitKat baseband but like I said I had the same issue on JB
If I force it in my office downtown I get up to 70 Mbps. And as soon as I switch back to default settings (if I boot) I go back to good old HSDPA if the phone is in a good mood. Otherwise I get 3G.
Sent from my LG-D802 using xda app-developers app
I have the same issue, I don't get why WCDMA preferred exists and not an LTE preferred (in *#*#4636#*#*). I'm running stock everything, only thing I've done is rooted, and I'm updated to the lastest firmware with Knockcode that T-Mobile pushed out.
Best way to discribe it is the phone gets "stuck" on whatever band it falls on. If my LTE is weak, it will fall back on 3G or 2G and just stay there - it seems like networks aren't prioritized. The phone should (in a perfect world) look for 1) LTE, 2) WCDMA, and then 3) GSM in that order and only pass one over if weak or doesn't exist, and should it pick up a higher ranked connection it should switch back. It seems the LG G2's just don't... If it falls back on 2G it's perfectly happy staying there until force it back to something else (default mode LTE/GSM/WCDMA) and it's rather annoying. LTE only is viable only when T-Mobile enables VoLTE on the G2's, but as of right now it stops all calls from happening, and I can't even change my phone to only use LTE/WCDMA, because where I work we just got a tower upgrade to LTE and they took the 3G offline, so calls still won't go through since it has to fall back to 2G.
I'll give Samsung some credit when I had my S3 and S4 on AT&T they would always follow the pecking order of what I stated above (in a perfect world) and I never had an issue, but the G2 blows the S4 out the water in performance in my opinion.

[Q] Signal - S3 vs S5

I know that there is this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2713214 but they don't seem to answer the question based on an S3, so I'm curious for those of you that swtiched from the S3 to the S5, did you notice any better signal everywhere you use it?
the reason for my question is this: I'm looking to upgrade from the S3, but I want a phone that I'm going to get a better signal with. I like Samsung, but am up to considering other android phones if one is specifically better with signal than the S5.
So, again, coming from the S3 to the S5, did you notice any better signal for calls/text/data?
Thanks

No 32GB option, so I stuck with my S4. Hopefully the S5 prime has a 32GB version.
I had also been considering the HTC One M8, but from what I've been reading, the radios in that device are worse than the samsung ones. I wonder if this is beginning to be a trend... Of course, there's also the draw of S-Off and root on that device. Ultimately, it comes down to this - my S3 had absolutely no signal where 3 of my buddies' iPhones had signal as did my brother's Moto X. It was very frustrating, so I want to make sure that my next phone has better signal.

I just got my S5 and I'm dropping calls where I never did with my S3. VZW thinks it could be a device issue and are waiting for my word to ship me a new replacement. I'll keep testing today and update this thread and also if I end up replacing it after receiving a new one.
I've noticed a great improvement in regards to signal on the gs5. It even seems to be a tad better than my Note 3 as far as keeping lte. I'm in a rural area too by the way.

I noticed no difference in signal strength between my S3 and S5, both are great. Although the S5 does get access to the much faster AWS LTE.

Can't speak to the S3 --> S5 changes, but I went from an S4 --> S5 and noticed HUGE signal improvements, including WiFi
I went to the S5 from a Note 2. The S5 seems to have slightly better signal and seems to hold onto lower signal longer before switching to CDMA. That's the best part; the S5 switches between radios much quicker than the Note 2 did. When I lost LTE on the Note 2, it would take over a minute usually to switch to CDMA and even longer when it felt like switching back to LTE. When the S5 switches, it's usually functional within two or so seconds. Love it.

I went from an S3 to an S5 and have noticed the signal is much better on the S5, but that is not always the case. I had the S3 since it came out and never had issues with 4G at work or other places when the signal was good. The S5 seems to have issues connecting with 4G at the same places I have used the S3 where I never had issues before (e.g. work and other frequented places). So far it only seems to affect text and data. When I do have issues, I am able to receive text messages, but not send text messages. Also, data does not work at all. I have to change the network on my S5 to CDMA to get it work. When I arrive to work, I have to change it to CDMA and when I leave work I change back to 4G. Using the automatic network mode setting does not help either since it stays on the 4G setting. I have had the same issues at other places, but I don't visit those places daily. I called Sprint and they couldn't anything for me.

This is very helpful, thank you. I wonder though, if the Sprint radios are different from the Verizon ones as far as signal strength and quality... It would be interesting to find out whether the Verizon version has the same issues where 4g connected just fine with the S3, but has issues on the S5 as you had experienced.

I'm a Verizon user and have not experienced any of those issues that sz1980 has. I get reliable data and text in the places where my S3 did. I do also notice better reception in fringe/weak areas, such as at work where I get terrible reception. With the S3 I never could make a phone call, and text sending was hit or miss. With the S5 I can actually make a phone call, and text sending has been quite reliable.
Maybe your phone is simply defective sz1980. Have you tried exchanging it?

I have not because I don't think it's defective. If it were sporadic I would, but as soon as I am close to my desk at work, the issue starts. It appears I have signal, but as soon as I attempt a call, send a text, or use data the LTE symbol greys out. Again, it consistently happens at my desk where the S3 always worked.

It sure sounds defective to me; besides, what's the harm in doing an exchange? At least this way you'd be able to rule out the hardware as the issue. That said, it sounds like you don't want to do that, so it seems you just want to complain and not actually get the problem fixed.

My previous phone wasn't a Samsung, so I am not answering your question, but much of my work requires me to be in rural - even remote areas. My Verizon S5 is frequently the only phone in the room with a connection. I also used to have shaky connections at home (on Verizon). I now have a solid connection for both data and calls and have no dropped calls. I LOVE this phone!

I used to use iPhones so I don't go back with android to the S3 but recently have owned and used iPhone 5, LG G2, HTC One M8, Galaxy S5, Galaxy S5 developers edition and Moto Maxx Developers edition and hands down the Droid Maxx has the best reception. Note that all have been on Verizon so it may be different on different carriers (droid is Verizon only). Recently drove with my son from VA to CA. Son used the LG and I the Maxx. Maxx had better reception from coast to coast. Of course a lot of places neither one of us had any reception.
That said the S5 is good and I am enjoying my new Dev edition S5.

HTC U11 AT&T support and collection

this is going to be an AT&T specific collection thread for this carrier specific stuff like VVM and try to make wifi calling work, also users can ask any questions related to AT&T and I will try to answer them and hopefully other users can help to.
HTC lying about AT&T "compatibility"
U11 does not support VoLTE on AT&T
U11 does not support WiFi-Calling on AT&T
U11 does not support Video Call on AT&T
U11 does not support Integrated Visual Voicemail on messages app like it use to on HTC One M7, M8 & M9, you need the stand alone app which is crap...
the phone works for calls data LTE works MMS haven't test yet I don't use them....
Any comment from AT&T on any of this? We know HTC's saying it works.

Argh... This sucks. I'm in an area where coverage quality has dropped significantly, and I spend a lot of time in a building where almost no signal gets through from any provider. Wifi calling and texting has become a lot more important for me for that reason. I can get by without the extra features, but it's tough now what I've had them (currently using an S7 edge and Note 5).I guess that leaves me with no option but Samsung or LG (and all of the provider bloatware).

Don't activate the U11 on AT&T, once their computer "knows" you have an uncertified device you lose LTE data and are forced onto HSPA+!
Does anyone know an APN setting that will reactivate LTE?

Weird. Your icons are not same as mine. Are you 4G (HSPA+) or 4G LTE? My APN settings don't have a field for APN protocol

I am using a custom rom that's all...
no band 30 guys. http://www.htc.com/us/smartphones/htc-u11/
Not a fair critisim for HTC. Even if the phone is capable like my non-AT&T S8, if the phone does not have the AT&T logo on it they will not allow these features. So complain about AT&T like I do.
I'm on at&t and I'm getting full LTE with zero issues.

See if you still have LTE during a call. The LTE icon should go away and if you go into about phone and then network, it'll most likely say HSPA. The problem is we're not getting services like VoLTE and wifi calling. In normal cases, HSPA speeds should be manageable considering the average phone call won't be very long and there's wifi nearly everywhere now. This is just bad for those in areas with poor reception. I've been doing ok with the whole issue since I never really noticed much of a difference with HD voice and I'm usually always somewhere with wifi.
My question is what did they do differently with the U11 than the 10. We never had any of these issues with the 10 being unlocked and not certified and all that bs

The importance for me & probably for many others on getting VoLTE is that I do technical support on my phone and trouble shooting while on a call takes to much time most of the time, that being said if I don't have the option to make phone calls on VoLTE means internet speeds while on a call is crap.... I really don't care about HD call clarity as far as I can here the other person, but the internet speed while on a call it is important to me the faster I can browse the faster I can provide technical support

Having a weird issue with my U11 on AT&T. I randomly lose all signal for no reason then takes a good 30 seconds for it to connect again.
It has happened at least a couple times a week mid phone call which is really obnoxious. I have seen it happen a few times when I am just browsing through my phone not on a call so I know its not just a calling issue, and I am sure it has happened multiple times when I am not looking at my phone at all and I don't notice.
Anyone else had this issue? An issue with AT&T and can be fixed by a firmware update? Or am I alone and need to RMA?
I know this thread is old, but can't we use the ATT RUU if you do what you need to do? We used to be able to go back and forth, at least that's what I did with both my M7 and M8. If you really need those features, that's what I would do.

Horrible signal new S10+ on sprint

Anyone else on Sprint with the S10?
Note 8, and S8+ works fine. My S10+ is getting 1x and when I'm on the road, it would come in and out all day long. Without WiFi the phone is almost useless.

My wifi works fine but I have very limited if any data signal and I can hardly send or receive text messages....
No one has a fix?
I called the sprint store and the guy said lots of these new S10 series phones have connectivity issues.
He said their tech has a fix for it but it may not be effective. He said Samsung needs to release an update to fix it.
I've got the S10+

Switch to verizon, att, or cricket. Sprint is bottom of barrel of carriers sadly. I learned that the hard way back when carriers has 2 year contracts.

I used to believe in this statement.. But when I walk around with a phone from Verizon (business), Srint (Personal) and AT&T hotspot service, I realized this is very not true.
There are locations where each carrier is stronger than others. At one of my job site, Verizon and AT&T fail to connect at all constant roaming and drop calls while Sprint skips along like no body cares.
Point, additionally, as each carrier acquire and deploy new bands, they need to be built out so the newer devices that support the bands can utlize it relieving the crowded older bands.
HOWEVER, this stupid phone, with SignalCheck Pro installed, I can see the bands I'm on but the signal stregnth is horrible, like at the moment, i'm connected to band 41 but LTE is at -117dBm, that's almost like not having signal at all. Likewise when I'm connected to band 25 and 26.
I tried disabling all those bands and force it onto the lower frequency with hardly any success.

Can you disable or remove that signal check program? Not all sognal check programs are legit.
What country are you in?
That may be part of the problem.
I agree, carriers do have their own pros and cons.

I'm in the US
and yes the program can be uninstalled, but it was only installed because I need to troubleshoot this issue, so it's not the program that's causing the problem. It's just telling me what band I'm on and the signal.

It's not just you. There are multiple threads on Sprint's forums with users complaining. My phone constantly roams, the WiFi calling keeps timing out on location and though it says LTE most of the time data doesn't work. Lucky for me I keep a spare phone so I'll be switching back to my iPhone X until they resolve this but there's been no official word on any of this getting resolved so I'm not expecting a solution any time soon. I'm wondering if it was the update I installed that caused this because it seemed like day 1 the phone was ok. Maybe a solution is to use Odin and flash back to the original stock.

They had me reset network settings which I did and it didn't help. They're sending me a replacement phone... Once I get it I'll prevent the Samsung update and see if that helps. Idk I really wanted to like this phone.

I have the sprint version purchased from S
Spent an hour with samsung to no resolution. Took my verizon sim and dropped it on the S10 and the phone was getting good signal and speed then dropped for a couple minutes then back to good speeds. But as it's doing this, the phone started to get very warm. Sprint tech support doesn't know crap, just make me repeat their written process multiple times and the guys at the sprint stores are just salesman.
Since the verizon seems shows intermitten connections as well, i'm going to see if samsung can send me a replacement.
