Tip: Make your battery X2 longer! - G3 General

Hi guys,
I've been struggling with the G3's battery life. After monitoring the CPU for days I found out that the McAfee security was eating up a constant 20-40% of the cpu.
Using root access and Titanium root backup I've uninstalled it and installed another security suite (I'm using 360 Security).
So far it had doubled (yes!) my battery lifetime and reduced the heat and CPU usage dramatically.
To top that I've installed Greenify and placed on non needed apps into the freezer there.
So far (knock on wood) I've had excellent results.
I highly recommend it (although you take full responsibility if you do try it of course).

This was the first app I removed.
Don't bother with ANY security/anti-virus apps.

I deleted the APK using root explorer.
Can't remember which folder it was in, but either:
System/app
System/pri-app
data/app

Maybe it's only on some devices not all of them

Some don't have it. For example, T-Mobile has a deal with Lookout for Jump customers, so they don't install anything for security.

There is anyway to do this without root ?

how about just turning off mc afee's realtime scan, auto update, notify me, and track sim card?
will that work too?

Just a question why are anti virus needed for android or even exist? I never had a so called virus on my phone never

Congratts for your new 6000mAh battery !! :good:

I can find no McAffee, or Verizon Security and Protection as they call it, on my TOT-restored, rooted. I use titanium backup pro. I am beginning to think is was not in the TOT image. It was the Verizon v10b TOT image I flashed.

[UPDATED] V6 Supercharger NEW UPDATE!!! (beta, but not really)

Just in case you weren't aware, zeppelinrox recently pushed out update9 for his inSANE Supercharger script.
It adds a few cool new features, 1 being the Nitro Lag Nullifier, which many claim increases their phone speeds even MORE than the fixes in Update8. I just tried it a little while ago, and noticed my phone loaded up quick and apps open even quicker now.
Also includes an Engine Flush feature that gives you a quick boost, just like the one you get after you reboot and notice all that extra freed up RAM. Does the same thing w/ No Reboot.
ALSO included is LOCKING ANY APP IN MEMORY, which is definitely useful for many. (haven't tried it yet).
Here it is ladies and germs --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15948434&postcount=1127
I love these scripts this is the first one I tried on ec05 and wow. Fast and smooth

Make sure you reboot your phone at least once a day if you do the Nitro Lag Fix or Engine Flush. It works very well at first but it may cause lag without reboots

I have been jumping around so much that I may need to review but I believe it is a Cache flush and without reboot once a day (it says it when you run the script) it builds up and causes lag. I didn't experience it because I battery swap once a day. My friend did and yanked the script

That seems to make sense, thanks for the info. I've also been noticing my scheduled titanium backup hasn't been running each morning (04:00am) like it's scheduled to.
I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the script as well, or if it's something else. I originally had the script on option 9, then just the other day I changed it to 6, a more balanced setting. I may just remove it completely and see if the backups start to happen when they're supposed to.
The SMS backup I have set to run runs when it should, without fail. I was thinking that maybe the script was killing TB, but since the SMS backup is working, maybe that's not the case?

I think you are dead on here. I pulled it for the same reason last week. I added it back yesterday though. I dont know what determines the priority of app killing but I notice certain things getting killed myself. I may have to dig into this some more because I am testing a kernel and I dont want any conflicts that I could possibly say is kernel related when its not.

Why don't you try using the new option to make any app "Bulletproof" on Titanium? That should do it if it works as advertised.
Otherwise, choosing a less aggressive option than option 9 (especially option 6) should do the trick. I also stay away from the MegaRAM options myself...too hardcore. I feel like a smartphone is meant for multitasking, and this script, if you use it right, makes it even better.
Try running options 2 and 11. Those have been working great for me since I started using them. I used 6 at first, but 2 is just a little more aggressive without really noticing it, so it's more effective. Then 11 just for kicks lol..does no harm

@JC - I just pulled it off myself, to see if it will run tomorrow morning.
@Franky - How do you enable an app to be 'bulletproof'? I have looked around a bit, and haven't found it yet. I may give that a shot, or just set it to different settings using the script as well. I'll certainly take yours into consideration.

Is removing bloatware necessary

Guys I just factory reset my note 10.1 2014...it was very laggy after reset but within minutes of usage it became extremely fast...no need to root and remove any bloatware .even s note app became fast and writing is very responsive...although reseting was a pain in ass..backing up bla bla....but it really is worthy....I just removed widgets from my home screen...there is no need to install any third party launcher...touchwiz itself is very responsive now..hope it help you guys..trust me..it really works...I m on mk1

I mainly rooted because you can use multi screen and the pen window with any app and as many apps as you like. Also bloat ware takes space so nice to free up the space if I don't use it
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I think when people say removing bloat speeds up their systems is the just the placebo effect. In most cases bloatware has no impact on performance, where is does, it can be disabled. An example is this is Story Album, which can run in background trying to put together an album. But if you disable the app, it doesn't do that. Removing bloatware also doesn't add usable space in most cases since bloatware is typically located in the system partition. Unless you also resize the partition, which users typically even know how to do, the freed up space is still not usable.
Just nice to uni stall apps you never use and never will use

No i just disabled some of the features like the eye tracking stuff, didn't actually remove them. Runs buttery smooth for me.
i installed nova launcher and set the window animation / transition / animator duration scales to off - and now i have no lag - i usually root all my android devices with custom rom and kernel but because there are not any for this tablet - i haven't even bothered rooted it - but if you change the launcher and set the scales to off there is no lag at all - and yes disable the eye tracking etc. stuff
Not necessary but recommended, at least turn off what's not really needed.
I've rooted to add more apps to multi window which is a great feature.
I have owned 3 samsung tablets in succesion and everytime I disabled apps it has speed up the device a bit. Not that there was lag before it just felt like new after debloating.
I've actually been on a "no-root November" experiment since the Note 2014 and S4 aren't root-friendly. TBH aside from having Touchwiz I've noticed no real impact.

May i ask what your update procedure was?
Some of Samsung's default programs really do suck balls. Their stupid index service caused infinite boot reloops because it takes forever to scan large pdf's. My Magazine has also gone haywire on me many times.
This is all stuff that requires a software update but none has come. Samsung tries to make powerful bloat but the tradeoff is that you get crap like an index service that gets stuck looping and sets your CPU to 100% and bleeds your battery dry in an hour.
Thanks but no thanks. I am waiting until a few months before voiding my warranty (or hopefully not and someone finds a way around knox).
What update procedure are you asking about...I never rooted..I got three updates out of the box..

But the speed-up effect is mostly a placebo. Also the effect on the battery will be insignificant. At least the data I check on my Note. So, I would say that this is not necessary.
And not everything Samsung put on the device is bloatware.

When someone has this expression then I already agree to remove it. But I still believe that removing the bloatware didn't make the tablet faster or the battery cycle longer.
But I am also sure that many people with bloatware many system functions they don't use and here you can most of them disable without removing anything.
So, when the question is if it is necessary to remove then my answer is still: Surely not.
PS. Its for me like the usage of all this task managers to kill processes. I mean we didn't live any longer in the 80ies and nobody will be manually better then Android in resource management. But still many Android users believe in the HOX that this fast their devices.

[Guide] How to get the most out of your brand spanking new G3!

Just thought I’d put a short guide together on what I think are some things to do to get the most out of your spanking new LG G3 when you get it or you already have it. Most of you guys might already know most of this or might not. Just thought it might help some people. This ain’t rocket science but every little bit helps!
Battery:
This is the hardest thing to do because like a fingerprint everyone has a different set up with apps and how they use their phone (wifi vs 3g vs 4g etc) that screen on time will always vary. Also you don’t want to turn everything off and cripple your brand new smartphone just for your battery. There’s a balance.
However here are some general things to do that do help:
1. Install Greenify from the Playstore. I have found this is the number one way to stop drainage. This app will hibernate apps when not in use. It doesn’t stop their functionality at all but hibernates them.
2. Don’t use Google Now. I think it’s a gimmick and does bugger all for me however if you use it it will drain your battery big time. Of course if you love it then use it!
3. Don’t use location services. Another big drainer. Just use it when you need it. However if you have apps that need it then of course leave it on!
4. Use ‘auto’ on screen brightness. Mine is on ‘auto’ but at 100% and the brightness is perfectly ok for me.
5. If you continue to get big drainage then download Betterbatterystats from the Playstore and look at the ‘wakelocks’ – this way you will be able to see what’s draining your battery. As a general rule your phone should go into deep sleep for at least 80% of the time.
With this phone I am getting around 5 to 5.5 hours Screen on Time. You should be getting around that too.
Performance:
Here are a few things only that really do help with speed and performance:
1. The whole thermal throttling thing is a pain i.e. LG’s decision to turn down brightness when it gets hot. However there is something you can do and which I have now done for two weeks with no adverse problems. Turn it off! Put this in the phone app: 3845#*400# and then scroll down to 'high temperature property' and switch to enable and do the same for 'thermal daemon mitigation'. Please note my model is ‘400’ so this will work in the number sequence above. For models with other numbers I am pretty sure you just substitute and put that number in e.g. 855.
2. Go to Dev Options and change the transition animation scale, the animator duration scale and the window animation scale to 0.5. This little thing speeds up your phone like nothing else.
3. Root your phone with towelroot. One click root! And then start debloating. Get rid of whatever you want by downloading Titanium Backup and going into each app and freezing whatever you want. Freezing is safer than uninstalling but does the same thing. Debloating is a must!
4. So once rooted then start using xPosed modules by downloading and installing the xPosed framework and then rebooting.
These are my personal Top 3:
a. Download the brilliant xPosed module ‘TweaksBox’ by P_Toti located at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2792242
And donate something to him! This allows you to change so much with this phone. I dunno where to start. It is superb.
b. I dislike the LG skin so immediately download the Google launcher – to me it is the fastest launcher out there beating Nova and Apex. This launcher cannot be customised however there is a fantastic xPosed module that allows you to customise everything - Xposed Gel settings located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-xposed-gel-settings-t2647275
And donate to him too!
c. How good would it be to extend your nav bar seamlessly if you slide your finger! Well you can – download Xtended nav bar here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-xtended-navbar-t2787228
And donate to him too!
I can’t think of anything else but these things definitely help.
And get ready for your G3 – it is super duper great!
lol donate this donate that, you sounded like their marketing... nice tips though, I'd like to ask between betterbattery stats and gsam battery monitor, which one better?
will towelroot work on the d855 version?
also what is the difference between greenify's hibernating with titanium backup's freezing?

Ha yes someone's got to donate! They do so much and get so little.
Yes the only reason I said bbs is because I'm used to it. Gsam does the same thing essentially.
Yes from what I read towelroot should work.
Greenify hibernates an app in the background if you are not using it whilst freezing apps effectively uninstalls them without the pain of then being actually uninstalled. And you can unfreeze them any time.
okay, again thanks for creating this thread, btw how do we take screenshots from g3?

Yes I've debloated some but just the safe ones. There's heaps there though.
How are you finding yours? I'm loving mine but just hoping more developers get on board. Tell your developer mates please!
Is there any danger turning off the thermal thingy. Could the phone completely overheat?
I'll just confirm for anyone wondering that indeed the turning off the thermal throttling does work by changing the device model number to "855" on the UK version
No adverse effects in last half hour or so and have been trying to run demanding tasks to see how it go's
You can uninstall all of the bloat without any issues. It also helps with your battery life. I usual get 4 hours of screen time post charge. That's more than most people can get on a stock kernel, and it's great for a 2k display.

No torch/flashlight app preinstalled, you will have to install one. Also no task manager that I can see.
What is the best torch app you recommend?
Also task manager? Doesn't the android multitasking app work finely for that?
I am using"flashlight hd led" which seems fine.
Yes android does, I just liked the task manager on the G2, not sure why they didn't keep it.

Why root

I have been active in Android for years and had always rooted every phone starting with my droid X. Been on AT&T for 2 years now with a note 5 and no root, insuranced phone and got a Note 8. I can't find one reason to root. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED rom control but other than Center clock and some build prop tweaks and a few init.d scripts (that probably did nothing or a little at best). What else do you need? This thread is meant objectively with actual thought.

One of the best reasons for root is to bring back built in functions that carriers block...download booster on carrier firmware, for example...kernel support for another...the list of benefits is a long one...but it's not for everyone.
What kind of kernel support do you need?
The only thing I can really say I miss about root is the sound quality with dsp manager/viper support.

Overclocking, underclocking, optimization, battery life...fun stuff...and I don't personally need anything...I was replying reasons to your question...I do it to play, learn, and take control of what's mine...I like being able to change my Sprint branding to USMC and run custom bootscreens that get others to say "how does your phone do that, can you do it to mine?". I try to do the same thing to all my electronics...
That I can get behind!!!!! For me I still love those things but I use out dated devices with no worries about my daily driver.
Most root functions can be achieved without root.
Viper4Android is missed but the built in equalizer and sound quality is decent.
Just an FYI. You can get center clock without root.
Also any tweaks to the kernel or battery optimization is destroyed on the Note 8 anyway because of the root method. Battery only charges to 80% and the kernel is jacked because it's an ENGBOOT kernel.
Completely worthless to root a snapdragon note 8.
I did not know that about center clock, thank you. I'll google it up. ADB lets me do mostly everything I would need root for.

When you open the app, go to menu/more/enable more stats and follow the process. It may take time for the statistics to appear as the app has to start a process and analyze after a certain time.

Fresh install Vs Restore From Backup?

Hey,
I've had my S10+ for nearly 2 weeks. Ain't really had a chance to use it properly as I'm waiting on the Dome Glass to arrive. I wanted to know if I should do a fresh install or restore from my Note 9's backup and how this will affect the battery? Any help would be great!
Many people report backup restoring to have a negative impact on battery, just do a fresh install to be sure.
If I'm getting a new phone I usually just do a fresh setup. I restore the apps from Google rather than moving them using smart switch or samsung backup because the apps are fresh installs and don't have my previous data. I haven't run into many issues doing this.

This. If you are kn exynos be sure to also check if your phone goes into deep sleep.
Thanks guys! Does "Better battery stats" APK work on the S10's?

This restores only the apps, not app data, right? For me it didn't restore apps data and I am curious.

It dont restore data, it basically installs apps you had but they open as though you just downloaded. So fresh start with sd wipe is best.
