I really like this tablet for what it offers, but the Wi-Fi issue really make the tablet not as useful. Issues I have:
1). Unstable network connection
Timeout left and right
2). Unable to connect to certain AP
Hotspot from my Note 3, T-Mobile ZTE and Meraki AP = no traffic whatsoever
The thing is, all my devices have no problem connecting to my home network, office network and hotspot. These are (past and current devices) iPad Air, Nexus 7, 2 iPhones, Note 3, S4 Active, Nexus 5 and 8 computers (Mac, Windows and Linux).
Some people have no problem whatsoever, while others like me have it. So this is a hardware problem that affects certain batch.
I thought about getting a replacement, but this tablet is out of stock everywhere so I'd had to wait for weeks. And what happened if I got another bad one?
So those looking for getting this tablet, just be careful. I'd suggest wait until this issue had been acknowledged by Nvidia And a fix is coming.
In the meantime, sadly,I have to return this tablet. [emoji25]
I returned my tablet before the 1.1 update. I assume it didn't fix the Wi-Fi issues?

Unfortunately, no. At least not the unit I have received just last week.
Are you finding data via a tethered connection seems to hang frequently? That's what in finding. But haven't worked out yet if it's my phone or not.

It's very sporadic for me. 9 out 10, no network traffic whatsoever. I also have my iPad Air with me at all times and when the Shield hangs, I immediately connect the Air to my Note 3 and there is network connection. So I am sure it's not my Note 3.

Tether or not, connectivity issues are there. Wifi tether is more dubious since emits an even weaker signal for battery life and heat reasons. Weak tablet wifi and weak router/tether wifi equals connectivity doom.

Interestingly, my Note 3 and ZTE Hotspot is only 6 inches away from the Shield tablet and...... zilch data.
Just got mine last week and use my note 3 to tether its seem ok also my home wifi is att and its seem ok

I suspect this issue affect some of the tablet. I just did another test with a brand new router and the tablet network crapped out too.
Anyway, will be returning the tablet.
Sounds like there must've been a shoddy batch.
The only WiFi issues I have are on the university's WiFi, but their routers have poor quality handoff and range to begin with. I've gotten a good experience on my own network, but not that there aren't any issues. Generally, my shield has fewer WiFi borks than my Nexus 5, so I'm pretty happen.
Once in a while, it'll connect to WiFi, but none of the apps will be able to access it, but that's pretty rare and fixable with a power cycle.

It is, but there's no quick replacement because most store are out of stock. Also, until Nvidia acknowledges this problem, there is a chance the replacement will also be defective.
I spent way too much time on this tablet already, more than any other tablet I ever had.

Best Buy still has them in stock. Same wifi issue, but not enough time of use to see cracks happen. Weak wifi resulted in quick returns. Wishful thinking perhaps that another unit from the same place would be any better.

Best Buy have it for shipping, not in store. So it'll be a 1-2 weeks wait, with the additional "gambling" factor --> will the new unit have Wifi issue?
My guess is yes, until / if they redesign. Will be interesting if the LTE model has weak wifi too.
I have been arguing with tech support for over a month on this. They insist its a software issue and keep telling me to on wait on the next update. After 2 updates WiFi is still terrible and makes the unit virtually useless over 20 feet from the router. It is clearly a hardware issue that they refuse to acknowledge.

If you go to the Geo Force forum, the die hard fan have the same kind if mentality. I.e. it's your router, it's your Wi-Fi settings, etc.
When i had mine, I tested it with different routers, from regular home Asus router to an enterprise grade Meraki AP. Oh, and McDonald and Starbucks AP. Unstable Wi-Fi connection all around.
So yes, it does affect some, if not all the tablet, as documented all over the Internet. Too bad Nvidia won't at least pay attention too these actual problem.
Yep, no more Nvidia tablets for me!
the wifi is a hardware issue as many on the NVidia forums have stated you can actually RMA it.

Fanboys are a company's best friend to blow smoke over their incompetence.
Shield tablet wifi is the weakest of any device tested for me since the infamously awful Acer A500. This is on par with it. The 3DS has stronger wifi. Very sad.
My Shield 1 though has good wifi.
Just got the LTE 32GB ATT Unlocked on Amazon for $299
The tablet is really nice. There are issues however. The OTG Y-Cable I have will charge the device attached to USB (ethernet or gamepad) but it will not recognize the device to the tablet. No matter what steps you take to connect the OTG cable. It just doesn't work. I had the same issue with my Galaxy S4 and trying to use a OTG cable made for Galaxy S3 devices. It's a software issue as far as I can tell. The Wifi and LTE signals are not very strong either. That is also a software issue. My wife has an HTC One and that thing has the exact same issues connectign to my Wifi Router as this Shield tablet does. You have to power cycle Android OS to get the tablet or the HTC to connect properly, otherwise it will continuously say authentication failed. You can try to turn off security on your Wifi and it will connect, but it won't work. A power cycle is required. Funny thing is my Galaxy S4 does not have these issues. So it seems odd that only some devices are having this software issue when they are all running KitKat. I really don't think it's hardware though because other WAPs seem to work fine. It's mysterious for sure. I believe the device will only get better so I'm going to hang on to it. I was able to stream 4K XXX from the datacenter, to my hosue and over my wifi to the tablet. I could also stream 1080p videos. The 4k stuff was chugging but I expected that. However 1080p streams wonderfully. This is a very powerful GPU and I am just getting used to it.

Its my 5th days using the Vibrant and I am still within 14 days return window. Number of issues keep me thinking just return the device for full refund. I have been using my jailbreak/unlock iphone 3g for years and fine. Pros and Cons against using the iphone 3G.
Cons.
1. GPS/Compass does not work most the time regardless of the few fixes I tried. I need to use GPS often and iphone GPS never had single issue. I can live without compass.
2. No skype, I am a regular skype user and need to use the app. I know there is a skype app out there kinda sort of works. But I need something official.
3. Battery life seems only last less than a day and charge to full takes longer time compare to iphone.
4. I am not a gamer but iphone games seem much more better.
Pros.
1. I get nice 3G speed at home and no longer need to WiFi to home network.
2. I only paid $150 after rebate when I am only 16 months into the contact.
3. Its a lot faster than the iphone 3G, data faster, processor faster. No lags so far.
4. Barnacle WiFi on 3G is nice although iphone have MyWi but I never could get 3G speed. Just hope the MTU issue will fix soon rather than keep twisting the client MTU.
If I return this phone, then I can try T-Mobile's first HSPA+ Phone... whatever phone that is... hhmmm.... what should I do?
There is an "official" Skype app.
Edit: Nevermind, I didn't know it only works on Verizon phones.
I love mine. Do what you need. .. nothing beats this IMO. GPS work's great for me and its just awesome. Try nova for games, also asphalt 5, modern sandstorm, hero of Sparta. Etc.
Don't know what to tell ya, I love mine.

The Vibrant then back to an iPhone 3G? Really?
That's a total downgrade.
What area are you in that's giving you the GPS problems? Maybe you should try to find someone in your area with the Vibrant and see if they are having issues too...
The funny thing is, it's working just fine for a lot of us....
But dang really? 3G is like minor league compared to the Vibrant. Trust me I know, I've had the 2G since day one, 3G's (2 of them) and the 3GS (2 of them)...never again will I submit myself to communist apple phones. Only macbook pros
I was in the same boat as you and found out I had a defective device. I exchanged mine on the 13th day to give it one more try, the new phone is performs flawlessly, except for the gps would take a little longer to find a satellite until I performed the second fix now its fine. I don't use Gps that much so its not a big deal for me. The battery will be the same as all high end smartphones especially with that awesome screen. I usually unplug the phone at 7:30am and it last until 11pm at night, mind you I make a few calls mostly its games and streaming podcasts and heavy web usage. As for the games there are many out there but not available on the market for some reason. If you decide to keep the phone pm me and I will tell where to get them.
How much do you trust Samsung?
For me, the risk boils down to whether to trust Samsung to fix the GPS. At least there now has been quasi-official (is a tweet official?) acknowledgement from the manufacturer that there is problem and it is being worked on. The conventional wisdom is that there will be a firmware update, and that it will cure the problem. But there are no official promises of a complete solution.
I am not yet convinced that the GPS problem is entirely a firmware problem, and Samsung has not said so officially. If the underlying problem is unreliable output from the new combo GPS chip, then a firmware update may not fix the root cause, but only mitigate the symptoms.
It does not seem likely that we will know the answer to that before the 14 days run out for the OP (and for me.) One option is to return the phone for a refund, then buy another later if there is good news on a real GPS fix. I, too, got a pretty decent deal, in my case on a T-Mobile upgrade from a G1. I might not get such a good deal later on a repurchase, but the marginal upfront cost should not be the determining factor. This is a two-year commitment, and I would hate to be stuck with a defective GPS on this high-end device.

Well articulated and way of putting that across and I would have to agree. Samsung went fairly all out on all the specs on this phone (some argue they could have made the case metal a la iPhone but the lightness is amazing in my eyes, less weight equals less impact when I drop it) and it would be quite a shame to see the actual gps hardware to be defective. I doubt that it is truly, and would be very surprised if it is not addressed within the first ota firmware update. Truly the only way is up from here on this phone.
Your money, you decide.
Hi everyone. A quick synopsis of my situation. I have the G2 with 14 days remorse period ending in 2 days. I NEED Wifi calling in my new house (moved a couple of months ago and get NO signal here), I have a BB Bold that I switch to every night when I get home to use the UMA calling and that works perfectly.
My dilemma is this, I am getting a little tired of switching my sim card every night to the BB, and I bot the G2 with the thought that an OTA update would happen to give me Wifi calling. I understand this will PROBABLY happen but I also know that sometimes these things fall thru.
I really LIKE my G2 and prefer it over the MyTouch4G, but admittedly the 4G looks a LOT BETTER to me in the videos I have now seen than it looked in the still pics. There is a local TMob store close by that has a dummy phone that I will go and look at tomorrow to see how it feels.
I really prefer Vanilla android and the ONLY additional feature I care about on the 4G is the WIFI calling (I dont care about processor, or FFC, or Tethering or any of that).
I just wonder how confident any "in the know" feels about whether the G2 will get the Wifi Calling FOR SURE in the near future (before year end).
I am happy to wait another month or so if needed because I really like the G2, but if there is a decent chance that it WONT get it, obviously I would use my Remorse period and switch the the Mytouch4G in the next TWO days..lol
Any thoughts and/or help would be APPRECIATED!!
Thanks to all!!
I returned mine within the 14 day period for this exact reason. I will "rebuy" the phone when they get wifi calling. The signal in my house bounces between no service and 2 bars. That's unacceptable. So I am hanging with my iPhone 3g until then as painful as it is.
Given how critical it is for you I would suggest returning it. When they ask why, state that coverage without UMA was not sufficient. (I would not recommend saying that the lack of UMA was the cause since you would have been aware of the absence at the time of purchase.) Regardless by making UMA the tipping factor you send a message to T-Mobile that it actually is an important factor in retention and sales.

Hello,
I am after a bit of advice. At the moment I have the original iPad which ought in Dubai for £160 brand new. However iv found that I don't really use the tablet a lot. After a bit of thought I realized that it is because it's wifi and only and unfortunately there isn't a wifi connection everywhere is the world. If the tablet was a wifi one then I believe it would get a great deal of use, and lower my phone bills in the process as I'm using around 2gb+ of internet use on my mobile from Internet browsing which incurs additional charges.
So question is should I buy the xoom?
I looked at the lg optimus tab as I do have the optimus 3d , but after a little reading I discovered that it doesnt have a 3d screen so that's out. There is obviously the galaxy tabs coming out, however I'm not a fan of samsung in the slightest , had the original galaxy s for a little while and was really not impressed.
The tablet will have to be on contract as I'm not really able to dish out 400/500 for a sim free one.
I do like the look of the xoom and despite it still rocking 3.0 in the uk the 3.1 update should be around the corner , and I will be rooting the tablet anyway.
If anyone has any better suggestions for a android tab on paym contract except the xoom please surgest away. The only other one I could find was the htc , and despite owning a ton of there phones the lack of 3.0 is a seriously downfall.
If anyone could offer a bit of advice about owning the xoom as well as the app choice that would be great.
Thanks for your time ,

Jordan, it will be best for you to hear from a Xoom owner with your same potential configuration as I have the US wifi only Xoom, but I wanted to answer you to get it rolling. As piece of hardware, the xoom is superior to anything currently available. That is my opinion but I believe that I speak for many others. The Xoom is heavier but stronger than many other tabs. Someone said it felt like something made for the military. You might not like that but I love its toughness. Also, it seems to be really hard to actually "brick" by rooting, poor installations, etc. There are some things you really shouldn't do, but even then, people have brought their Xooms back from the edge of disaster, so it's pretty well made. Google support for the US wifi model is excellent. Motorola seems to be getting a black eye in Europe for taking a long time to update, but you are aware of these issues according to your post. As you know, apps will or will not be available depending on your location. I am 97.5% satisfied that I have every possible app that I want or need to make my Xoom a superb tablet computer. I have good 4G coverage in my city so having an unlimited 4G personal hotspot works wonders with my wifi Xoom. It's a bit too large to use as a phone, and I don't always have my Bluetooth headset on, but I actually could get rid of my (non-android) phone and use the Xoom with Line2 for $9.99/mo. I use Splashtop HD to access and control my PC desktop from anywhere. I have sdcard, thumb drive, 750GB HDD and cloud storage on top of 32GB internal storage with the Xoom. As you can guess, I really love it.
Your experience may be different, though since you will root, you will have all of the same capabilities plus the 3G. If you have an android phone you can tether your Xoom and provide the connectivity that way. Maybe you don't need a 3G Xoom, just a good phone data plan.
Thanks very much for the advice and the notes about your xoom. It's fine to read reviews on products but they don't really tell the full story. So the facts you have stated and what you are able to do with your xoom is very promising .
I would consider the 3G wifi hot spot , I have done that on my iPad however if your doing it without a charger then the battery of your phone really doesn't last very long. (remember that iv got the lg 3d which isn't really a beacon of perfection when it comes to battery life) also due to the stupid uk networks vodafone do not offer a unlimited data pplan and tethering stacks up data usage badly.
To be honest I m pretty excited for it and may very well make a trip and get one come Friday.
As you say the specs are brilliant which helps the longevity and it's not difficult to keep it updated with later versions of android through root or motorola themselves .
Thanks very much for the reply ,
Jordan
i too are interested in the zoom 3G, but i also have other choices which includes the galaxy tab 8.9 or the LG 3G tab. i do prefer the smaller tab of the three which are the samsung or the LG 3D, anyone can comment on these.
thanks
ARGH. First it took me two days to root the Xoom, now I can't keep a stable 4G/3G data connection. I've gone through 3 SIM cards, and Verizon is telling me that "something" is hanging in their system which won't let me properly activate, so I have to send my Xoom BACk in to Motorola and have them look at it. Anyone else have any nightmarish stories about their Xoom after the 4G upgrade? I live in Detroit and have excellent 4G coverage...my Thunderbolt has 5 bars. I've tried selecting only CDMA, same non-working result.
So sorry that you're having problems. I hope you will be able to get it fixed and have a chance to enjoy it.

It's official. My Xoom is possessed! Shortly after I started this thread, the stupid thing all of a sudden activated itself, and now I have 4G, and it's been on for about 2 hours....WTH? I called Verizon, and they told me that they DON'T see the device active...something's REALLY strange here.....I'll keep an eye on it for a day or two, but if it goes back out, it's going back to Motorola.

Now that is funny, about the possessed. I hope it goes all well for you.
Are you trying to run tiamat or stock? Tiamat doesn't seem to support 4g devices currently.
To clarify tiamat runs for me, when I restore my pre-upgrade image everything but 4g and 3g is fine. I get internet only on wifi. However, the stock update from Moto that it came back with works perfectly.
Also, why did it take 2 days, once the sdk is installed it should be as easy "fastboot OEM unlock" then pushing a few files. It could be possible you messed with your radio or something if you were confused as to what you are doing.
You accept all inherent risks associated with rooting and using custom roms one of which is that your data connection may be flaky.
In the case of trying to get a device to work in a particular fasion I would highly recommend 100% stock until working properly and then moving from there.
In other words... don't tell us you're ready to smash your Xoom because of something you did to it.
I sent my xoom in and had the upgrade down. When it arrived back It was not activated. and would not activate.. I called VZW the first guy I talked to said he would be more then happy to activate my xoom again and that I would have to change my current VZW plan i have with verizon from my current 3g/3gigs plan to a new 4/whater gig plan for more cash. I hung up on they guy and looked threw VZW website and found info about the upgrade, and I found where it says you will not have to change your plan after the upgrade. So i call VZW again this time the guy i talk to sends me to what he calls a stage 2 rep. I talk to him tell him what the first guy told me and then qouted off there website about How i do not need to change my plan. he looked over my account and found that when they upgraded my xoom they screwed up when they entered my sim msein and med info into there system. 3 hours later 2 phone calls and finally he gets all his ducks in a row and finally a working 4g xoom is in my hands.. (and I DID NOT have to change my plan.) and yes i mistype alot. but in my defense only the first and last of a word has to be correct for the human mind to be able to read.
Well my 4g randomly goes from 4g to nothing. Althougth I have bars they are grey and no connection.
My wifi then decides which networks it will connect to and which ones it won't. My router has duel networks set up the same way. Won't connect to 1 but will connect to 2. My friends house full bars standing 5 feet away from the router. Hit connect drops to nothing and cycles remembered / analyzing. Same settings as my router at my house. I go to Toyota connects instantly.
The radio is possessed. Stock Xoom never routed I just got it back this week. And wow battery life is crushed. But WOW is that 4g lte some fast kinda fast my upload is 8mbs!..........when it works

ive had one of these for almost 2 years. works fine intermitently. some times i just have to unplug it. also does not work if you torrent alot as it uses your broadband internet. if your running vuze or utorrent, you get terrible latency on the phone i.e. 15 second delay on voice.
thankyou very much for that information. its good to know.
I have had one for 2 years now and honestly it has been flawless. The only thing I had to do was change the settings so that only certain phones could connect to it. My internet connection blows so if the neighbors hook up to it then I can't watch Netflix.
Thanks for the new details. I've had one for a few months now and it rocks as long as my Internet connection is up. I put it behind my router/firewall and have the router doing QoS priority on anything from it.
That's fine if the issue is at home, but unfortunately this doesn't help people with signal issues in their work environment. :/
Yea, had one of these for a while. Its . . . ok. It does what its supposed to most of the time, but then sometimes you will just not receive calls and your cell will only be able to call landlines. And then sometimes when landlines call you it goes straight to voicemail. And then you call customer service and they walk through 80 steps with you accomplishing nothing. But most of the time it works. If you start having issues with calls or data though, before commenting on a rom or kernel you flashed, turn off the airrave and make sure its not that damn thing causing it.
Didn't really work for me. I just have it sitting disconnected at the moment.
Worked OK for me. I too suffered from missed calls occasionally, but more often from text messages not sending/receiving. This happens a lot at my dad's house where he has one.
Interesting responses. I must really be in the minority this. Only time I have calls go straighght to voicemail is when I am at school and that's because the engineering building might as well be a bomb shelter. No missed calls ever that I am aware of either.
I have had one for a long while. Mine causes more trouble than it's worth to me. I just leave it unplugged now. These units are EXTREMELY sensitive when it comes to the internet connection. Anything less than prefect QOS score causes big problems with this unit. Which is funny because my Vonage phone has no problems at all & plugged into the same router & parked right next to the Airave. Just for reference I have a 10MB/s download internet service with a transceiver on my roof as there is no dsl or cable in my area (I live in the sticks), but I am very close to the tower in town (within 2 miles I think). Speeds are good & VOIP Qos scores are good most of the time as reflected by the Vonage working fine, but for some reason the Airave refuses to work right 85% of the time (so it stays unplugged).
Whoops, wrong thread.
I just called and was declined due to having DSL. The documentation specifies it works with DSL. She said I could call back if I get cable internet.

call back and show her proof what dumb a$$ B*tch lol
I've had mine for about a year. Make sure you ***** and moan and talk to supervisors about the fact that they want to charge you for the device and $5 a month for usage. Mine is completely free. Anything like, "Well, my friend with [some other carrier] gets great reception in my house," seems to do wonders.
Just got mine. We'll see how it goes. My only charge is for the tax on the line that it adds, about $2.50/mo. If it works, i'll gladly pay that.

I was going to call back and tell them I switched to cable, but some of the reviews said it wasn't that great (they keep theirs turned off).

I dont know what others situations are but before I had mine I couldn't make calls or use data in my house . Now always have full signal bars and data is faster at my home than anywhere else. Mine is tucked away with the router and a never have to touch it. I have cable now but previously worked perfectly on dsl . Big difference on my laptop between cable and dsl, phone performer the same. In a nutshell my phone works a+ in my airwave environment .
I called and told them i wanted to cancel after 2 mins i got off the phone with free airave no monthly fees or anything also the line is eligible for an upgrade already on the sprint website xD and it hasn't even gotten here yet
