Hi guys, i have a GS5 AT&T SM-G900A. My phone is rooted with towelroot. Last night it got stuck on the android bootup screen and from there nothing else. I try to flash it back with Odin but it keeps failing. Anybody has any idea how can i get this phone to work again?

Of course you'd prefer a fast answer. We all do when something happens. But it's presumptuous to label a post urgent as if your personal predicament is somehow more important than everyone else's. I know that urgent labels discourage me from helping as much as I otherwise would. Certainly I won't subscribe to your thread unless you remove the urgent label.
You also failed to provide us much information. In particular critical details like an Odin log, verbatim Odin errors, Odin version, your firmware version, et cetera.
First, boot to recovery mode and wipe your system cache. Then see if your phone will reboot normally. If not, then you need to repair it with Odin. And no one will be able to more than guess at what you did wrong unless you provide more details.

Thank you sir, sorry about the urgent label. i am trying to take off the urgent label but i am not able to edit that part here.
I am using Odin V3.07, i am trying to post an screen shot of it. My firmware is kitkat 4.4.2. I already did the recovery mode and wiped the system cache but nothing.

An Odin log or even screen shot would be invaluable. And you still haven't told us the exact file name that you are trying to write to your phone with Odin?
At a guess, it's just Odin being temperamental. But I am only guessing since we don't have much information about your configuration yet. Odin is infamous for being sensitive to USB timing just like IOS is.
Use the newer Odin 3.09. Write a pre June 6th build of stock firmware to your phone. Temporarily disable any firewall, antivirus, antimalware, et cetera software on your PC. Do not use a USB hub. Try a different USB cable and USB port. The latter is important. Odin often fails because of a noisy USB cable. Use, borrow or buy a different one that appears to be well constructed.
Also crucial. Ensure that you entered download mode by pulling your battery and then pressing and holding in sequence volume down + power.. If your Odin write fails, do not close the Odin window. Pull your phone battery again, replace it enter download mode again and then press the start (write) button on the Odin screen again. It's important that Odin screen remains open through out.

Thank you so much, all of those are great tips. I will try again tonight cause right now i am at the work computer. I will also have more info about the file i am trying to write in Odin. Thank you again for your great help and patience.
So i can't catch a break, now my laptop hard drive is making a ticking noise and i can't use it till i fix it.
Finally fix my laptop, Odin still failing like before. I changed computers and many usb ports and cables and nothing still stuck on boot.

First pull the battery, wait 30 seconds and boot in recovery mode and data factory reset. If that fails disable Kies in windows task manager. Power down, pull the battery and wait 30 seconds and then reboot in downloadmode and try again.
Thank you so much everyone, after many sleepless nights I finally figured it out. Somehow the firmware from sammobile wasn't working in Odin. I download one from here and it pass right away. Got my phone back

No dice on the battery pull or finding the custom odin. Guess I'll have to be phone-less until tomorrow and hope I can get access to win machine.

i believe you are thinking of Heimdal. I don't know anything about using it, but I believe it is supposed to be an OS independent version of Odin3.
OP, find a friend with windows, that will be the easiest way. Otherwise, do some research on Heimdal.
Also, as other people have said, as long as you can get to the download screen. you are NOT bricked.
Can you get into clockwork recovery mode? With power off press and hold the camera button and the volume down button while powering on. If you can you can restore a back up if you made one or flash a rom.

PLEASEEE!!! help me out i tried upgrading from kies mini to froyo. I did this with success earlier in the past on my old vibrant but had it replaced to a referbished one and i tried upgrading it now.. but my vibrant was stuck at downloading the uprade on kies mini at 1% for half an hour... and the vibrant had the android shoveling yellow sign saying do not turn off target... for half an hour as well.. I knew something was wrong there because it didnt take even close to that long last time..
NOW I tried unplugging the usb wire restarting the phone in emergency mode still nothing... now all i have is a cellphone...yeild sign... computer icon showing..
PLEASE HELP!!!
Dont worry you totally didnt brick your phone. Its pretty common, can you get your phone into download mode? If you can then just odin to stock.
1.Take your battery, sim card and SD card out
2. Plug in USB Cable
3. Hold volume up/down and plug in battery (There are a few ways of doing download mode and I believe its phone specific, or if you have bootloaders installed its different as well, google around a bit...
4. Start odin and presto, your phone works again!
hey thanx... I just did that.. I never used odin but i installed odin with all the files... I believe my vibrant is hardware locked because i was trying to get into download mode for 2 hours with different techniques.. such as just volume keys and power button... taking out the battery holding volume keys then putting it back in.. but nothing put me into a downlaod mode... somehow odin still found my phone while i was still stuck under that picture...
I loaded the .pit file without the jfd image.... becuase i didnt know what window i was suppose to load the jfd image from... like pda.. or etc???
anyway so i just loaded the .pit file and clicked start it reset the phone and the phone went into restart mode and it turned on fine i checked it works fully... lol.
It makes no sense... was i suppose to load the jfd file somewhere?????
i still want to upgrade my vibrant to 2.2... but now whenever i turn on the keis mini it promps me to emergency recovery upgrade... so i tried doing that and went into download mode since now i can.. and plugged in my phone but the progress bar on my computer for upgrading never moved from 0%... its odd... am i doing something wrong?
so again i disconnected and "bricked" my vibrant again lol... went into odin followed the same steps just loading the .pit file and it reset the vibrant back to normal again lol...
Im so confused yet happy that i have my phone working but i still want my froyo... i love the fact that i can use yahoo video messaging on it with froyo and have flash and other benefits..
any advice?
Thanx again
try this...........
power off phone
pull out battery

turn on odin
attach phone to pc with usb cable
now while holding down both volume buttons put battery back in.
now you should be in download mode and go back to stock with odin from here!
make sure u put the proper .pit and .pda file in there proper places on odin and ur set to go.
Enjoy and also make sure u have the proper samsung drivers
put pit in pit and tar in pda on odin
Connect it to the PC and see if ODIN recognizes it.
If it does, you are safe, flash stock.
EDIT: nvm, didn't notice the third post was yours.
Anyways, if ODIN can STILL recognize it, get the first from the link on the post above, FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS and enjoy your again-useful phone.

Thank you all for taking your time to help. I have one last question... since I used Odin but it just reset my phone and I didn't flash the old firware on it..... ever since that now I tried to update my phone with kies mini and it says phone unregistered... in that place before it used to say new firmware available and showed old forward numbers/letters.
So if I use odin all the way will this resolve "unregistered device" problem?
Thanx again

I have a similar issue, was soft bricked, Odin to stock then, while using Mini Kies to upgrade back to Froyo the phone turned off and never came back on. I cannot get any response from the phone as far as light's or sounds. Checked a few batteries and still no use. I'm curious if anybody else has had a similar experience?
so if it should solve the unregisted problem... where I put in the pda file... is it possible to put in the last froyo there so odin could flash froyo on my phone so basically i wont have to go through kies process?
odin back to 2.1 then root and then flash a 2.2 rom way better then a stock 2.2 rom

Make sure you have the right odin files, once you have gotten back to normal just do a factory reset on your phone if that is possible. Then root, flash, and do whatever you want to do. Without your proper files for odin you'll get bricked or get something different.

its a refurbished phone.. when i got it.. i uploaded my old pics without a problem with the same usb cable..... its weird.... i dont know what to do? what is it likely the phone itself or i messed it up with kies upgrade????

I totally understand. Unplug the battery, take out the sim card, and sd card....leave it alone. PM me so we can set up a time to work on it and I prefer skype because of screen share, it makes it easier for me to show someone what to do.
I recently bircked my vibrant with a bad kernel flash, and it wouldn't get past the Vibrant Samsung screen. I fixed it, so I decided to post how I did it here, to hopefully help someone. I am not sure if this works on newer Vibrants. If you have one of the first batch then you should be fine.
Step 1
You need to get ODIN and the stock Samsung/T-Mo 2.2 rom. I am not allowed to post outside links, and the file is too big for an attachment, so you will have to search for it, try googling "Download Samsung Vibrant Stock Rom"
Download all the files and extract them somewhere where you can find them.
Step 2
Once you have those downloaded, start up ODIN, for pda, select the pda (.tar) file you downloaded. For the pit file (make sure you extract it, it should be .pit not .rar or .zip) select the pit file you downloaded.
Step 3
Now, pull the battery, and re-insert it. Make sure your phone is turned off, and hold down VOL+ and VOL-, then plug in the USB cable to your computer, then phone. (DO NOT press the power button on the phone) Wait a second, and the download screen should now show up. Simply press start on ODIN and wait for your phone to get the the unlock screen. All done!
If this worked, please reply and tell me!

I am not sure of any ROMs that still require odin, as CWM is a lot easier to use. I would reccomend going back to stock, rooting the phone, then installing CyanogenMod. If you're fast enough, you can get it done and have a working phone in about an hour.
Well the only mode I can get on the bricked phone is download mode with the jig.
After that ODIN works. I've never been able to get ADB to play well on this computer.
There is an ODIN version of stock 2.2 I may try if I don't find something newer. Thanks! I did find a guide on how to make an ODIN ROM but it is a bit late for me to do it...

Trigger 3.2. Overstock v.2.4.1
Thanks, it worked.
Thanks, my brick is now a Vibrant again. After seeing nothing but a boot loop for a week Eclair looks wonderful!!!
Heimdall One-Click was my only hope and remedy for several times, it's capable of installing the right drivers (which not always were SGH-t959!!!) in Download mode, even when Od in wouldn't sede my phone.
After searching hard for a solution, I have come to the conclusion that CM10 fried my tab's kernel memory.
What initially happened was just a random freeze while I was using the tablet, running the CM10 preview build. Keep in mind this was a couple weeks ago or so.
I hard reset the tablet, and it randomly boots into download mode. Okay... nothing weird. Reboot again.
Back into download mode. Inspection reveals the message "Reason: No Kernel" at the top of the command line.
I've been at work all day (thankfully a slow day) and I've tried just about everything from rebooting the tablet into recovery mode - which the device no longer has, either - to Odin, to ADB. A final google search directs me to this thread, where it appears the same thing happened to a non-rooted user and he had his mainboard replaced (assuming for free) due to hardware malfunction.
So I guess I'm just here looking for insight, perhaps closure. Is it really dead? If so, how can I make the best of this? Anything that I can salvage through a teardown? Perhaps a gadget I can build with it?
Any input at all is highly welcomed - even wanted. Please, give your thoughts on my loss of this tablet.
If your able to get into download mode, your tab is not dead. (Hopefully you can still get into download mode)
I had a similar problem recent too. I had to ODIN a couple times to fix whatever my problem was.
Download an ODIN stock ICS version for your device (assuming its US wifi only based off the model number in the title). You can get it here http://www.sammobile.com/.

If you can't flash to a stock ROM with Odin, with the "Re-Partition" option checked (select the correct pit file, get it from samfirmware/flashing tools), it's pretty safe to say it's a hardware fault.
