Remap Home button function?? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Posted this in the T-Mo GS4 section but I've gotten no replies so I'll ask here
Basically what's happening here is that I want to use on screen nav keys. OK cool. Enabled them through Gravitybox I shut off the capacitive LEDs and was able to disable to menu and back buttons all together by editing the generic.kl file in /system/usr/ file.
Now, I'm trying to change the home buttons function to menu instead of home but it isn't working. I reboot and the button is still functioning as home.
I edited key 103 and 172 and replace MOVE_HOME with MENU WAKE_DROPPED. It isn't working.
Anyone got any ideas on what to do?

NEVERMIND! I figured it out.
If anyone is interested in remapping their hardware buttons, the file to edit is the gpio-keys.kl file in /system/usr/keylayout/ folder.

Unfortunately I'm a stock Google kind of guy so Wanam wouldn't work and gravity box has no settings to change hardware butting single press functions.
It's OK though. Editing the file I posted above works well enough.

Seems like there is no way right now. I'm hoping future ROM developers do implement this.

I was able to remap the buttons (short press and long press) with the Xposed module called : Xposed Additions. It even lets you remap what they do while in sleep, and do something different when awake.
Install Root Explorer (only one I advise for this).
Root.
Go into \system\usr\keylayout
Edit generic.kl and gpio-keys.kl (I recommend taking backups first).
Find key 115 and 114 in both files.
Remap as you wish. I have mine set to Menu and Home.
Save and reboot.

I tried it and mapped next/previous track to up and down volume buttons. Also mapped power button to pause and play when double tapping

Not without framework mods, AFAIK, but I hate softkeys. Use AutoHideSoftKeys and get the best of both worlds.

I highly recommend using xposed additions above. It is fantastic. My method it's quite universal though. You can remap any hardware key to any other although be weary of remapping your power key and losing the ability to switch on! Look through the generic doc I listed and you can see pretty much any key to remap to. 114 and 115 are the hardware keys for volume up and down. You can change them to camera, home, back or whatever.

@Friguy, I don't want to hijack the thread, but if you're worried about messing anything up, get yourself clockwork mod or twpm installed so that you can make a full backup and restore. It gives you so much freedom!
Download xposed, find the apk and install it.
Find xposed in your apps and run that. Install the framework, and then goto downloads, find the module you want and download it. Go to modules and put a tick next to the module to enable it, and then reboot your phone to enable everything.
After that, find xposed additions in your apps and run that to configure it. My way is easier but additions gives you more flexibility.

Any way to remap the power button only when the device is on? i.e. only allow it to turn the device on, but not off.

other than using the power button to turn it on, and crossing my fingers that this will get re-enabled in Android 4.5/5 around July/August, no :/
Also annoyed that the auto-brightness+ setting is now gone, but that at least was fixable through the Lux app.
Brightness button did not disappear on mine. Sprint S4
Any solution for the home button?
It's a world wide issue with all tw KitKat updates.

Couple alternatives. Wanam with Xposed could fix it. Also, a different launcher would let you set it too.

Thx bud,
I don't think that the prob is from the launcher, as it doesn't work with other launchers neither (I don't use TW, also it is working normally with s-view cover opened).
I have Wanam with xposed, but don't find any option like that... could you help me out? Thx a lot!
I found another strange issue, don't know if you have it , too. If I deactivate auto-unlock when I open s-view cover, it still unlocks when I open it... even after restart.
Edit: Found the solution for other issue: Nils Notification was set to always unlock when cover opened, nothing to do with rom... My fault

In Wanam, under System, there is a section for Long Home key behavior, can you not, Launch S Voice from there?
I use Google Now, and this is how I launch that.
As for S-view, I can't help with that, I dont have that.

Not sure if this is launcher specific but I'm using Nova Prime and if you long press the menu button, then the original menu items pop up instead of recent apps. I never test with TW launcher. Discovered this later. But this way you don't have to remap with gravity box.

I'm not even sure what gravitybox even is. I tried to see if it was in the app storre. someone else in the thread recommended to do so....
FYI - the layout used in the S5 is the standard Android button layout and you will see fewer and fewer devices using a dedicated menu button, as there's no need for it in Android 4.x+

Gravity BOX is a module that is installed after you first use Xposed Installer. Google this or look it up in a search here on XDA.

Is there a "fix" for the recent app button to re-map it to menu button on the first touch as it has always been in all previous models?

What do you mean the hardware button will be safer?? With 2gb ram what s the point to check open apps? It should be used the opposite way...long press to get to task manager, normal touch to get to menu...I ll wait for the other member to show up with the solution hopefully

Well, actually there is a solution since you are rooted: install Xposed framework, then install/check Gravity Box module within the framework menu. Go into the Gravity Box and assign the buttons to your liking, restart the device and voila!

You made me smile again...how could I miss normal samsung function...I''m on Galaxy phones since I9000 (s1)...this recent app button made my life harder on the s5...
Thanks again and again!
For the rest here just a hint...it needs a reboot after framework installation and after Gravity box installation...
Thanks again my friend!
You are very welcome, but you could activate the menu function just holding the recent apps button for 0.3 secs without using any additional apps. Anyways, glad i could help

Disable Home Button Completely

Hello, all. I'm trying to disable the home button. I've tried everything I've read and searched up, it's a no-go. It doesn't wake the phone which is halfway there but it still functions after the lockscreen. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

let's me see
It didn't work for any of the capacitive buttons nor the home. But I'm already good with the capacitives through another method. Hardware home seems impenetrable. Anything else?
All right. I finally got it! I edited gpio-keys.kl (separate from the rest of the buttons from down there for some reason) and I added a # in front of key 172 HOME and saved it.
