[Q] soft-key buttons disappear (go unlit) - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, I just acquired the Galaxy S-5 (on Verizon), after owning the Nexus-7 tablet for a year or so.
The two soft keys/buttons (i.e. 'go back' and 'show me all running apps') that are on either side of the HARD key stay lit for only a second or two, and then go away.
Is there some way to make them stay lit? (Like on android tablets such as my Nexus-7?)
(also, these two soft keys are in the OPPOSITE positions from where they are on tablets such as my Nexus-7...be nice for a consistency fix for that, too, since they go 'unlit', so you can never remember which is which) :silly:
It occurs to me that the idea for them to go 'unlit' was maybe part of some effort to reduce
battery drain. But, in this case, I for one would prefer to keep them lit ... just have them dim them down, but
please don't extinguish them!

..

Ok, I figured it out from there...

That's normal. Not to mention better than the way that the Nexus works.
Nevertheless you can change it in the Settings menu if you like. Just choose always on
To swap the keys, to make it more like a Nexus (are you sure that you just don't want a Nexus?), use the Xposed framework module to reassign the keys. Or you could edit the keylayout files directly. If you do a search you'll find a number of existing threads detailing how to do so.

Hmm...why would it be 'better' than Nexus, when you have to memorize/learn where each key is (other than marginal power-conservation)?
I'm sure you meant to tell me just WHERE in settings to find that tweak.
Found that info from a Google... it is here:
Settings>Display>touch key light duration.
Thx for including that 'Xposed' can do the swap of locations, but now that I've got them lit all the time, it
really doesn't matter which side is which.

How do I change my keyboard?

Hello,
I've been struggling with my keyboard settings since I got my Touch HD. At first, it was a complete QWERTY keyboard. I wanted to change it to a normal keyboard, like on a regular cellphone. I didn't know how to do this. But suddenly, without knowing what the hell I was doing, I accidentally got the keyboard to change. But now my problem is... Well, you know the layout is as such:
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
Shift 0 Symbol
...I have two problems with this. The first is: I can't type any letters, even if I hold the keys down, so basically, I can't text message to anyone. The second problem is that I have no idea how to change it back. If you could just tell me how to change keyboards, AND how to make the regular cellphone keyboard layout WORK (I have chubby fingers), I'd be really, really grateful.
Thank you for your time.
EDIT:
Oh. I see. How irritating. How am I supposed to know that there are actually two buttons in the center button? Oh well. This still doesn't change my ABC / Numeric problem.
Hi Alfa Jez
Assuming that you have not tweaked your phone in anyway.
There are two ways to change the keyboard settings on your phone.
First, is to go to Settings and within settings your Windows menu option (press window flag top left hand corner of the screen, settings is the second from bottom menu item) and then it gives the option of "Input" showing a keyboard and from there it gives you the option to set your "Input Method" as well as other options on word completion etc.
Secondly, you should be able to change the input settings directly from the middle bottom of your screen once your virtual keyboard has been activated. There is a little up arrow which if you press should give you the option of "Touch Input Settings".
Hope this helps. This information is in the manual.
Best wishes
Kaid
Thank you for taking the time to reply, but I'm afraid this doesn't help me. What you've told me so far, I already know.
Although, I have tweaked my phone with HD Tweak. But no big changes at all.
What does your keyboard look like right now?
Are you stuck on a number-only pad or symbols-only pad or do you see letters on the keys?
Here are some pictures. Tell us which one is the one you have right now.
You should be able to switch through these pads via Sym, 123, ABC keys in the different keypads. You also see that the symbols keypad has 13 different pads to scroll through and it can be "locked" (lock key). That causes it to stay there after pressing different keys. When unlocked, it automatically goes to the normal letters/numbers pad after you have entered one symbol.
Well, my problem is that, even though I have the one with the letters, (of course, it's needed to type letters) I can only type numbers. If you see my problem. I can see the letters and the number, but it seems only to want to use the numbers. Even if I hold the keys down, no letters appear.
Hmm, if you what you have is the second picture above and yet you can only type numbers, then I don't really know what to do. On that screen I only get the numbers if I tap and hold for a second. A quick tap gets me the letters.
Maybe someone else might know what is wrong there.
Did this start recently or have you always had that problem on your HD? Or did it start after you installed a certain program or made some kind of registry change?

I suppose you turned on T9 in HD tweak? If so, turn it off, then soft reset. This problem is being brought up on an almost daily basis.......

Did turn it on, yes. But I read other people having the same problem, and they were also told to turn off T9, so I tried that as well. Haven't tried soft resetting, though. (Soft resetting = Turn off, and back on, right? ) Will do!
EDIT:
After soft resetting, it worked! Thanks to both of you, I'm jumpin' up and down as we speak. ^^
Glad it worked. Just a word of caution: as you don´t seem too familiar with windows mobile (soft reset is one of the most used word/actions as it´s still windows...) just be careful when using different kinds of tweaks (HD tweak, advanced config) or modifying the registry directly. Don´t just change/turn on/off something because it sounds good. If you don´t know what you are doing it can mess up your device real bad......
Been there, done that......
I'll be cautious, and try to control my curiosity. ^^
Are you still jumping up and down? Or has the excitement worn off?
I'm glad it works now.

App Request : Enable keypad backlight while screen is on

For any devs out there...
Would it or is it possible to develop an app that will keep the backlight on for the keypad ? i.e. On while the screen is on and go off when the screen goes off ?
In the dark its very annoying when using the Hero and having to fumble for the right key to press - Home, Back, Search etc.
i second that
well erm just press any key and the light will go on dude, you dont need an app for this
So you fumble and hit Home or even power off (to sleep) the screen when you only wanted to hit search or back.
Flicking the scroll wheel is the only way to light up the keys and not press the wrong one by mistake, but that tends to highlight a button, link etc... and sometimes if you hit the ball too hard, you select a screen element.
Still a pain and TBH not like any handset I used before. Backlight time out was always linked to screen time out.
You dont need to hit any key, just move the scroll wheel even slightly and lights come up. And it does need decent amount of pressure to press the scroll button, you wont accidentally press it.
er, yer, I know... but I don't want too
lets just say "even if it doesnt make sense to some people, WE want it!"
btw, there is one app "dark keys" that keeps the backlights of the keypads off all the time. this was made for the white G1. maybe it can simply be rewritten to make the reverse happen?

Good idea. +1
So which dev is gong to earn a couple of $$, ££, €€ by writing this for each copy sold then ??
From what I can tell of the API docs (http://developer.android.com/reference/android/os/PowerManager.html, the SDK only allows for the keyboard backlight to be on in FULL_WAKE_LOCK state, meaning the screen will have to be full brightness.
So I don't think this request can be achieved by a pure SDK app.
How come it lights up at any screen brightness on the Hero ?
Surely its also a hardware call and not just an OS call ? These would be independent of Android and particular to each manufactures handset, else they would all be the same.
Not questioning you, but it would seem strange that its not addressable separately to the screen ???

I'm by no means an Android SDK expert, just posting what I found in a quick search round the docs. Happy to be proven wrong!

Might be able to dabble in the /sys/class/leds/ folder.
I'll take a look when I get in.
Not a dev though. Lol.

Correct.
echoing a value to:
/sys/devices/platform/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0066/leds/button-backlight/brightness
through adb shell turns on the backlight.
I think an SDK app could be created as a service with a broadcast receiver listening for the power state changing that just writes a positive value to the file above.
Loads of similar examples here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=565015
I'll take this on, just about got it working.
Wicked thx
You are stars (especially fullerlee)
Don't make it too expensive though

Modded ROM vs. standard ROM keyboard lag difference?

Hi. I have been running a couple of modded ROMs and the htc_ime i install on those ROMs is always laggy and somewhat buggy. Is it the same with standard ROM?
One of the bugs i have noticed is that sometimes, when i press space it just goes nuts and creates a period(dot) and just continues to make spaces for a short period. And this has happened on several ROMs.
It's the HTC_IME, not the ROM. the HTC keyboard is designed to put a period and two spaces when / if you hold the keyboard for too long. I haven't looked at the actual code to see how many milliseconds it is, but that is what is happening. Try to tap the space bar quicker and it should be fine.
Thanks for your reply, but thats not whats happening. I press space fast enough. I am aware of the fact that it puts out a dot if you hold it or tap it twice . It does not explain why it continues to make spaces after it makes the dot. It goes totally bananas
Its a setting.
I have a custom rom but im almost certain that the setting is a standard feature.
Its called "Add a space after dot" or equal and you should find it in the settings for input and text.
Good luck.

I also know this is considered a feature, and I intentionally have it on. HOWEVER, there is often keyboard lag, where you can quickly tap on a key, and the software does not recognize that it was a quick tap and processes it as if you held it down for a longer period. With the space bar, you get the period + spaces. I frequently get the same effect on other keys, yielding numbers, etc instead what I wanted.
The keyboard lag is *awful* and I consider it one of the bigger usability flaws in the mytouch.

Try using Super D, I get no lag on the key board and its a great 1.6 ROM. Its possible it could be a hardware issue, try going into the dev tools and click pointer location. See whats going on with your touch screen.

I am using Super D at the moment . Turning the vibration feedback off helped somewhat, but in landscape mode it is still lagging a lot. Tried pointer location, and the screen seems fine to me
FYI, I switched off the predictive text input option on HTC_IME, which got rid of just about all of the lag. It works very well with haptic feedback now. Unfortunately, there's no spell check or anything, so you may have to pay more attention but it is still preferable I think.
The basic problem seems to be that the mytouch simply doesn't have the processing capability to run close to smoothly with all the advertised features, and we have to selectively disable options to try to get a usable product. It's a shame since android itself is quite nice.
I suppose another solution would be to go into the source for one of the keyboard packages and see if it could be made more efficient, but that may be pointless as soon as better hardware comes out.

Volume Indicator takes over screen

I'm not sure how other Rhodiums are set up...but the Tilt2 has the rather annoying feature of 'full screen' pop up volume indicator always coming up when you press the volume buttons. But in a very select few programs just a sidebar pops up...almost like a mini version. Is there any registry setting to change to make the 'mini' one the default?
This cab works for me....

I actually prefer the full screen version, it is easy to use with the finger. Touching to the left or right of the volume indicator will remove the display and go back to your normal screen.

Does this make it smaller, or remove it? Reading it over, it seems that the latter is the case.

It removes it. I like it, the volume buttons are more responsive instead of take a second or 2 to actually change, and the full screen is annoying.
I was bored at work and decided to poke around the registry to see if I could figure this out. I think I'm on to something. When you go to: /HKLM/SOFTWARE/HTC/VolumeOverlay/InhouseEnable2ndUI there are a bunch of folders for apps on the phone. I went into Manila and set it to 2 and then went back to the home screen (I have Sense 2.5 active) and had a little volume bar at the top of the screen when I went to change the volume. I may try to add other apps and see if it works, but I'm lazy, so I might just go play some tower defense instead. Hope this helps get someone else a little more motivated to help. hehe

Setting this value to "1" will give you the slim vertical slider on the left of the screen, but this slider is not operable by touch on the screen, it is only a visual aid to let you know where your volume is at when you press the vol up and down hardware buttons.

[Q] How to fix anoyances with Note 3/Touchwiz

I'm have slight buyers remorse, but I have a few more days till I can't return it for a full refund. I hoping to find out if any of the issue I have with the Note 3 or more accurately touchwiz will be able to be solved. I'm coming from a history of running customs ROMS on my galaxy S1 and galaxy S2, most of the time cyaogenmod. Lucky I find touchwiz has improved but here are my over all gripes:
Can't change the vibration pattern for notifications, most importantly text messages and emails. You can create customs patterns but they are only for calls. This is my biggest problem right now. And the fact that clearing a message from the notification bar doesn't mark it as read is annoying.
I would love on screen buttons, with this much screen restate it's a great phone for on screen buttons, I also find getting low enough to press the capacitive buttons with my thumb and still holding the phone a bit difficult and I think I would have no trouble if there was on screen buttons. - SoftKey Enabler, requires root- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fatedevgroup.softkeyenabler&feature=search_result
Home buttons wakes the phone - Fixable by mod or wanam http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2477150
Double home press open magazine - Settings in Magazine, gesture disable can be done by freezing magazine in titanium
Replace S Voice with google voice. - Freeze with titanium then use double tap to get to google voice
Remove all toggles from notification area, have all the toggles in the toggle pane
Remove the persitant icons from the task bar (blocking mode, smart stay, NFC)
All logs in phone log - fixable with app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samsung.log.converter.ics
I really got used and liked the pop up/quick message window option that cyaogenmod had. I would like that along with the removal of chat bubbles.
I also liked black/Holo design, I sure this can and will come some how. Also we'll see how kitkat ends up looking...
How likely is it that my gripes with touchwiz can be fixed, yet still stay on touchwiz framework due to not wanting to lose functionality? I am aware it will require root and most likely a custom ROM, but if I was able to start out with just some modifications to stock rom, that might be a good start. I might find out but 1-4 are my biggest complaints. I love the note 3's hardware, but I'm hoping the roms/touchwiz won't push me toward the nexus 5....
One additional question, all these model numbers are confusing as hell. I have the N900W8, will that hinder my ability to use custom roms? Is it an equivalent to another model number? (X-Note is the only roms I've seen so far the explicitly says its compatible with the 900W8)

All suggestions welcome.
Edited with solutions in blue. I haven't tried them yet
If you open Magazine and hit menu, then choose Settings, you can turn the double home press off from in there.
The swipe from the bottom gesture can't be disabled short of doing something like freezing Magazine with Titanium Backup.

A fwlew of these things are easily fixed with xposed wanam module. You need to be rooted though. As for Google voice, freeze svoice (maybe you can just clear defaults, but I froze it) then when you double tap home, you'll be given options in what you want that to do.
