Hey guys,
This is my first time posting, although I am constantly on the forums looking for help and ROMS. Its been about 4 months since the last ROM I downloaded for my phone. Its actually been 4 months since I did anything to my phone. I found a ROM that worked and kept with it. I have a sprint galaxy s4. fyi.
But yesterday while I was in the middle of texting on my phone it randomly shut off. When I tried to turn it back on nothing happened. Then I pulled the battery out and it rebooted showing the Samsung Galaxy S4 screen for about 3 seconds and then shut off again. I tried another working battery and still nothing. So then I pulled the battery out and try to get into the bootloader (holding down the volume up button). It said it was going into the recovery but then shut off about 3 seconds in. So then I tried holding down the volume down, home, and power button which allowed me to go to the OEM(I don't know if that's the correct term but it was a warning about tampering with the software) So I pressed volume up to continue and it immediately shut off again.
I cant get passed anything for about 5 seconds in without it shutting off. It's extremely frustrating and annoying that I literally cannot do anything with it.
Any sort of help or input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much in advance!

Make sure you have a well charged battery. Once this happened to me the phone was running hot and the little charge it had was wasted trying to get it to download mode. also having it connected to a computer/power outlet sometimes messes with the boot up. The timing of when you press the buttons also affects the loading. as soon as you see hte Galaxy S4 logo let go of the buttons. Hope this helps/.

I tried 2 different batteries, I also tried having it plugged into the computer, charger, anything. I've also tried different timing on the buttons appreciate the response though. I'm going to keep trying the timing of it.
Anyone have any other suggestions?
Sounds to me like it can be a defective power button which Samsung is notorious of making on their devices.

Hey BIGSAMDA1ST....thank you so much I looked at it more closely and it seems like the button half of the button is jammed up in there.
Hopefully that's what was causing the problems. ?
Same probleme here (also since yesterday)
Could you solve the problem? I had the same problem yesterday. Galaxy S4 with CM 11. Suddendly the phone rebooted and it just came to life for about 3-4 seconds after taking the battery out and in again. After a few tries it booted coorectly again. But today the same thing happened and now it's dead for about 3 hours. Now I am going to buy an external charger and try to load the battery to 100 %. I also disassembled the phoine and checked the powerbutton for functionality.
Yeah that was not the problem. lol I'm sending it to an outside company due to the face that its not under any warranty. I'm saying its bricked lol

Hello, recently my phone has been having issues. The power button stopped work, it started first when I would unlock my phone, it would give me the power down screen then a few seconds later it would shut off.
Now it wont turn on... I have to pull the battery out and then put it back in then it shows the samsung logo and shuts off. To get pass the samsung logo I held the volume up button and then it will start up. I can only use my phone when I unlock with the camera which is very annoying.
I have tried just about everything and I have scoured the web to look for any sort of solution. I have hard rest, and I even tried flashing it with a rom. But the phone just shuts down.
I hate being a pain, but is there any solution?

Luckily, I think the button is easy to change and it's cheap. But I'd go to a phone shop to confirm first (like this one in US - no affiliation, found via search).

Hi im actually getting the exact same symptom. Did you ever get to fix yours??
Hello,
I had been using my i9500 for quite a while now, with no issues.
rooted, Hassan rom , Philz Kernel, worked flawlessly until yesterday.
suddenly my phone started rebooting indefinitely, not entering recovery or download modes.
I tried mashing the buttons a little, and i got to the download mode "Warning" screen (unable to go any further) without holding my power button - meaning only by holding both home and volDown keys.
anyway, this lead me to believe my power button is malfunctioning, yet i can still normally press it (Clicking as usual, as if there is no physical damage) and I did not drop or damage my phone in any way.
all of the online threads are regarding phones stuck on boot animation, yet mine is flashing the "Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9500" white over black screen (before the boot animation) and doesnt reach boot animation.
i want to believe my data is still reachable as i have not made any backups lately, this is why I came here.
if anyone has encountered any similar issue, please shed some light as this is the first time i had been unable to solve a "boot loop".
thanks in advance!
(ps, phone is still stuck on the loop, i let it keep doing so overnight to let the battery die, plugged it back in to no avail)

Hi mate
I sounds a lot like a power button problem , symptoms are similar to other cases , even if power button clicks does not mean is working .... take it to a local service center a have it replace.
Data should be fine.

Great mate.
Good luck
My GT-i9500 just started this same issue less than an hour ago.
I have taken the battery out and I am hoping this will help. Since I never turn the phone off the power button doesn't get used that much. At the most it might get used once a month.
Well I am not sure if this was the reason for it working but I put the battery back in and rocked the power button back and forth. Now its booted properly. Will keep and eye on it, just a pity it would give issues a few days before Christmas. Repair centers won't be open until early Jan.

While waiting for the lab to open (sunday) i started flicking my phone a little more violently (upon the acceptable amount of strength), and now i made it boot (!!!).
the current status is the power button is not working, i am carefully navigating to titanium backup... hope i can get a Nand backup aswell, but that's just being greedy. thank god for Philz touch recovery (no power no love on recovery)
Hello mate...
I am using same I9500...i faced same problem wayback in august...phone ws starting indefinitely without even pressing power button. ..so i searched net..
No recovery mode ws accessible to me...couldn't flash....

Had no other options. .
Spent 9600 on my i9500.

I had an alarm app give me an alarm last night but I was busy in another app and dismissed the alarm in a way that the sound was still going. The only thing I thought to do was to do a reboot of the phone. I gave it a few minutes and when I pulled it from my pocket I noticed that it had not rebooted. So I held the power button for a few seconds and waited for that vibrate then the "Custom" screen.
Nothing.
Held the power button for about 30 seconds.
Nothing.
Good battery, at least 75% before this happened. No sweat. I have a spare battery that I know is 100%. When I put that one in, the phone immediately did a vibrate and gave me the "Custom" screen. Then dead. Power button did nothing.
Pulled the battery and upon insertion, I got that vibrate again. But this time I held Volume+ and I get that tiny blue bootloader message at the top of the screen for a half a second. Then dead. Tried it again and this time did Volume-, this time I got download mode for half a second. Then dead.
Tried all this with power plugged in and get even less. Nothing.
Connected it to a PC (OEM cord straight into the motherboard) and got nothing. No charging LED, no sound from the PC upon plugging. Nothing new showed up in Device Manager.
Did I just do the "Low Effort Brick" method just by rebooting? I have had this thing for a few years, running CWM then TWRP. Several ROMs in the past, xposed, done it all and never once even had a boot loop. Now I have a brick because I rebooted a phone that had been VERY stable for weeks (on Dan's GPE ROM)?
I am not so concerned about the device, I actually ordered a LG G4 already. What I REALLY want is the autobackup of Tasker that is in the internal storage. I know I have a TiBu of everything on the microSD and a TWRP is on there too. But both are a few days old and I have made many changes to Tasker in the past few days. Tasker updates a backup every time you leave the app, so I know I have a very recent file in there. But how do I get it?
It's not bricked. The power button on some S4's are janky. Mine did the same thing for a while. You can try smacking the power button on the corner of a desk or something but otherwise either just keep pulling the battery and trying, try opening it and cleaning the switch, or try replacing the switch.
It's hardware issue with power button. I've got the same issue with my S4. The only solution is to replace the button.
Good advice. Found a few YouTube videos that are pretty close the issue that I have. I shall do some work on this this weekend. Thanks for taking the time to respond!
Hell yeah. Effin HELL YEA. Found a few YouTube walk through videos and got down to the switch. Using my ever-awesome Simpson 260, I was able to determine that the power switch was bad. I exercised it a few dozen times and then it went open. Roughed everything back together (without screws) and got a boot.
Immediately made a TiBu of everything. I will also make a TWRP as soon as that is done. Now I have to source a power switch. I should have no problem replacing the switch. I have a fantastic solder station at work and a 20X magnifier. This shall be my crutch until the LG G4 arrives.
Thanks again for the advice. Proof again that this is a real community.
Side note: I went to AT&T to get my old Vivid back into action to replace my S4. When I mentioned that the device was rooted, they replied with some statement that my "jailbreaking" the device is what caused the failure. I asked if she knew what rooting was, and she said "yeah...jailbreaking". I asked her if she knew what an "unlocked bootloader" was and she just glazed over, mouth open. When I told her that the device has been rooted for years with no problem, she insisted that the problem happened when I "jailbroke" it.
Hello
This is my first post here and I'd really appreciate advice in this matter.
I've spent the past couple of hours searching for an answer but nothing works or totally irrelevant results.
I have a problem where I'd rooted my phone with KingRoot, changed it to SuperSU successfully (restarted my phone several times since then and no issues)
I installed TWRP (only the app) from the Google Play store and that's as far as I got before I powered off my phone to cool down before attempting any installation of TWRP. Powered on my phone and I can't get past the Samsung logo.
Recovery won't come up, Download mode works but restarts itself and volume buttons do nothing to let me confirm download mode and so it's sending me in a loop. Samsung logo and restart again and again. I insert my battery and the first thing that happens is my phone goes on a mission, determined to power itself on only to Bootloop.
No, before anyone suggests it be a hardware issue, it's a brand new phone. There's nothing wrong with the buttons.
If anyone is going to point out the obvious in saying that I'm responsible for rooting my device, I'm aware of this. The rooting procedure was a one-click method which was successful and caused no boot issues after restarting the phone countless times.
Basically:
Bootloop
Can't access recovery
Can't get to Download mode without it getting back into the bootloop after 5 seconds or so. Volume buttons do nothing to confirm download mode.
USB debugging wasn't enabled before this Bootloop occurred
Do I have a paperweight or is there a way to salvage something from this?
The phone isn't supposed to power itself on after inserting the battery.
This behavior is only acceptable when the phone is plugged in while inserting the battery. But even so, the phone wouldn't try to boot up, it would just display the charging animation.
i had a similar problem where my phone would boot up to the white samsung logo as soon as i insert my battery. tirned out the power button was stuck. try gently knocking the power button onto the corner of a table or something with the battery pulled out. it might work for you if your problem is what i think it is.

Thank you for your response but would you like a video to prove that it is in fact attempting to boot up when inserting the battery?

I tested it on my device (I9505) and it doesn't boot up, it just turns on to display the charging animation. If I want it to boot up I have to hold the power button.
So, in conclusion, it must be your power button.
You can say the phone is new as much as you want, but there is a chance it came with a factory defect.
There might also be a possibility it is refurbished phone, which means it is pseudo-new.

Iv done all i could find on here to do, please heop me get my phone to boot up!!!
Perhaps you should give a bit more info. What were you doing before you got this issue. Were you updating, are you*rooted, what version of firmware and whose network are you on.
Sorry, I am rooted and I am with att, it was Working fine until I tried to put xposedon it , after I did that it went into this boot loop. I used Odin to root and it rooted fine and still worked. Then I attempted to put xposedon and it messed it up. I'm on att and 6.0.1. Let me know if you need to know anything else. Thank you
Tried goin back to factory
I also tried using Odin to go back to the original firm ware, now maybe I did something wrong but I t failed everytime I did it. Any help would be appreciated
When the same thing happened to me, I was stuck/frozen on the AT&T logo screen, I left the phone to drain all the way down. When it finally drained the battery and shut down, I was able to plug in the phone to my computer and get back to the download screen. I let it charge up a little bit, then I Odin'd it back to stock (PI2). I have since been unable to root again, but the same thing happened before. It was a couple months before I tried rooting again. At that time, I was successful. Someone else may have a more elegant solution.

Couldn't you just have tried a manual reboot? Just hold power and volume hardware keys for 12 seconds. Once it resets enter into download mode.

I don't believe that but I guess it may be possible and the hard restart buttons are power and volume down for about 10 seconds, seems like an eternity before it reboots lol.
