So I ordered my N1 yesterday, and currently have at&t. wasn't too worried about the whole 3g thing, because I figured one of the smart guys here at xda would figure out a way to make it work. After looking in to it further, I realize the hardware just won't allow that. I would just switch to T-mobile, but they have no 3g coverage anywhere near me yet. this brings me to my question. is it worth switching to tmobiles coverage for faster 2g possibly, or in the hopes that they'll soon expand their network. I don't mind getting out of my contract with at&t, tmobiles rates seem to be a lot better. I'm just wondering if anybody has heard anything on T-mobiles future plans.
I think most anecdotal evidence by most users is that EDGE on TMO is much faster than ATT. Why? Even though the "transport" 2G technology is the same, ATT still suffers from not enough bandwidth at its towers for all the heavy 3G areas due to heavy usage. -- In other words, backhaul contention.
Also, the fact that in places where there is no TMO 3G... EDGE works quite well for the very same reason... Even with towers that only have several T1/DS1's in place instead of T3/DS3's or fiber
Cheers,
Kermee
In NYC, where I have 3G coverage as well, EDGE tops out at 10-15KB/s

I personally have ran on EDGE for awhile on tmobile and have never had a problem with wifi while I am at home/school... however the 3g is nice, though my house seems to have 3g signals
its simple business really, though 1 man cannot make a difference... as the company grows, the service grows... verizon has the best service because it has the most customers... i think the reason tmobile has struggled in the US (as opposed to being the number 1 world wide carrier) is because of the lack of appeal from phones... with more phones rolling out and tmobile always having its doors open to unlocked phones i see the company gaining some momentum and it starts with these new android phones making it big as well as now having the fastest network in the nation...
ive had bad experiences with both verizon (contract issues) and att (terrible customer service), tmobile has yet to steer me wrong (other than not giving me an upgrade for the N1 haha)
with that said, try em out, idk if companies still let you trial their service for a week or so but you could ask?
i honestly cant tel a diff between edge and 3 g lol they both are friggin fast as hell

are you crazy? 3G is AT LEAST 10+ times as fast as EDGE.
I know on my touch pro using att 3g over edge. they have 3g where I work, but not at my house. so I always just use wifi at my house, but don't bother at work because the 3g is fast enough. I can definetly tell the difference. granted there is wifi almost everywhere these days, but with my touch pro I have to turn it off and on when I'm using it so my battery half makes through a day. It will be nice if the N1's is more of a automatic thing, if that makes sense. I guess if I knew that t Mobile would actually be implementing 3g in my area at all soon, it would be an easier decision, but I haven't found anything to make me think they'll be adding towers in York, PA any time soon.
Im in Dallas TX and just activated my phone. I was worried because people in some forums where saying phone kept switching to 2g. I just activated my phone and its been on 3 out of 4 bars on 3g last 30-40 minutes...I know this is kind of off topic, but thought it was important do to the nature of all the talk about speed on tmobile.
Ok im scared now, i just looked at the USA map on tmobile https://my.t-mobile.com/Plan/CoverageMap.aspx and looks to hardly be any 3g coverage! What! Tell me it aint so!
that's what I'm saying, I want 3g on this phone, but it's just not in my area on tmobile. we've established it's pretty much going to be impossible to get att's to work on this phone. It doesn't look like tmobile has 3g anywhere, atleast not hardly. what to do, what to do.

OMG i live in york to lol. ive asked tmobile many times if we'll ever have 3g and they told me december 09 but that never happened. who knows if we'll ever get it. but edge for me on tmobile works good unless u use media functions like youtube and streaming video but its good for web browsing and email
Make sure T-Mobile has EDGE all around your area because I've found that there are many places that don't even have EDGE on T-Mobile and are GRPS only. That being said, I do find that usually T-Mobile EDGE is faster.... The difference is so small that I wouldn't change networks over it though..
I get around 25KB/s or so, which works fine for streaming music and such. This is quite a bit faster than the AT&T users seem to get here.
Yeah you should be happy with what you've got. EDGE isn't amazing but at least with the 900mhz range you've got coverage. I'm not sure about T-mobile US thought but it has to be better than UK. I live in the UK just outside of town with 3 basestations surrounding my house just out of range with 2100 3g and 1800 2g. I can get signal occasionally with my Iphone 3gs, until I touch it...
The coverage is okish but I get Black-spots everywhere; literally, I can walk round the corner away from a basestation and lose signal. I can only use my phone if I'm underneath a basestation and even then the crappy 4.2Mbit/s (It may even be less than that) limited basestations are overloaded. Each user is then further capped at roughly 1.8Mbit/s
That's 3G and above, which I rarely get as I mentioned. When you get 2G you get EDGE. When I get 2G I don't get EDGE, I don't even get 2.5G, I get slower-than-dial-up GPRS which is unusable. None of T-mo UK's basestations are EDGE enabled; with common black-spots and poor 3G reception, this makes for an appalling network. I can't wait to switch to Three UK. Blanket UK 3g coverage with amazing deals: £15/mo rolling contract with 300 mins, unlimited texts, Unlimited (7.2Mbit/s) data. The only problem is they have shockingly bad phones (no problem for me, or so I thought...)

That pretty well sums up the problem with TMUS users.
They have no f***ing clue.
Before i even bought this phone i called att and asked point blank if i bought this phone would faster data speeds? The person "said" she looked at a map and said i was in hspda coverage speeds area. So i bought the attic about 10 days ago and since then I have gotten horrible data download speeds. I talked to att and even went into the store again asking about their supposed hspda/ higher data speed network, and got every response from " yourselves need to change to a 4g sim card", to "there is no point at all to buy a hspda/4g phone right no matter where you are". But iam getting pretty much the same data speeds as my tilt2. So the last time I went to the store they said that only the 4g phones, inspire, iphone 4, and the attic could get the higher hspda/4g data speeds, so I thought maybe it is guess worth it if later I will get higer data speeds, because it is a pretty nice phone, ill give it that. But I aS looking at the specs of the htc tilt 2, and it says it also supports HSPDA speeds. I think now I have pretty much heard every lie att can tell someone.!

Spell check would have made that easier to read.
I agree... I had a hard time trying to understand the OP...
That said, keep in mind that there are many factors that affect DL speeds... your location, the time of day, the alignment of Jupiter and Mars (LOL), etc... Also there is another post where ATT admits to having the HSUPA disabled right now and that they will turn it on in the future, whatever that means... Taking that into account, perhaps you're in an area where they are still attempting to upgrade HSDPA speeds and haven't even started the backhaul crap. I dunno.
If you aren't happy with the phone send it back before it's too late. If you are happy with it EXCEPT the DL speed, maybe its the phone... Do you have an ATT store you can go to and compare your unit with a display unit to determine? Take all this with a grain of salt; I'm usually full of it. Good luck.
Don
What are you getting for speed test? It shows HSPA, but not HSPA+ (I don't think?). Sacramento has good LTE according to AT&T...
(edit: if there is another thread, direct me please?)
Nexus 7 doesn't have LTE radios... you only get 3G.
Doesn't it have HSPA+? I saw the nexus 4 get like double or triple the speed on HSPA+ (but they were on tmobile...)

Yes, it does... but your speeds may vary.

would like to compare....to see how fast it COULD go i guess. Haha. Hopefully the network will get better here.
Yeah, it could be your area. Here are some speeds I've gotten on AT&T in Los Angeles:

haha, definitely! i never got those speeds on Tmobile's HSPA+, tho my device maxxed at 1.2 Ghz, if that makes a difference.
tried again on new rom, had more APN connections. tried the att LTE and it doubled the speed to about 2000kbps now. getting better! it a rural area too.
edit: now around 3000-4000kbps. much better. was barely getting into the thousands earlier.
Ah there you go, that's getting better. Despite the good speeds, the network has been annoying me a bit lately. Sometimes i will have a perfect connection, my status will show HSPA 10, with excellent signal, yet i can't connect to anything, can't load anything. I wonder if it's because it's L.A., and there are millions of iPhones and others on the network, and data-only plans don't get priority? The priority thing is my theory at the moment anyway, haha. I have never experienced this on my smartphones, but then again, this is my first experience with AT&T mobile data.

same here, no idea on the att mobile data, could be second class customers. haha. yes, much better, i'll test in the city in a bit, hopefully it'll be a lot better. are you custom rom? running cm10.1 now, seems better. might fix some data connection issues?
Yeah, you will probably get some good speeds in the city. I'm running stock 4.2.1, but I have thought about trying CM 10.1, but not just for that reason. I think I might call AT&T later and see if I can find out about the tablet plans. I have heard about some customers not having priority, like if you are subscribed to a sister company but are running on the same network as the main carrier. I'll let you know what I find out.

That shows that you are on WiFi though.
Has anyone tried tmobile? I talked to support and they said they have prepaid plans for tablets. Might go try it out and see if I can use their service. I heard people having trouble, but that was for the regular mobile plan. Maybe the data only plan will work, and be much faster. Going in today, I'll let you know and then post results if things go well.
Cool, let us know. When i fist got the device a month ago, they said they didn't have any tablet plans all they could offer me is a wifi hotspot device.
OmG **** ATT. Tmobile FTW. Haha.
edit: if you want more info, just went into the store and asked about the mobile broadband plans. I said some people had trouble online, but It was probably because they tried their phone sim card. this is data only or something, so it worked right as i put it in the slot and rebooted. So much faster. Wow. $35 for 3.5GB. Same pricing as AT&T basically. WAY faster.
And they stay consistent too.
I have called at&t 4 times today and Google once. My phone is only displaying H not 4g. Will not connect to 4g no matter what I try. Messed with APN settings. Wondering if I have a defective phone. Wifo connection is not as strong as my other devices even right by the router. Any help or suggestions. At&T and Google had no help whatsoever.

Probably a hardware issue but I would do a full reset and try again, if that fails contact their support for RMA
That's what I was afraid of. Did the full factory reset and still same issue! I'm hold with Google right now with google. I know they don't do exchanges which is ridiculous! Been on hold for 15 mins. Will prob never buy another device from google after this mess. They are saying a replacement might not fix the issue because H might stand for 4g. I have told them this is not the case as the speeds are noticeably slower.

Do you mean "4g" or LTE because 4g will display as H on this phone?
When I went to AT&T they had to tweak my settings so my apn is set to ATT phone not ATT WAP and I get lte now. You might have to go into a store and have them tweak it for you. At first it shows H but it switches over to lte. I hope this helps you some.

Huh I was told by Google that H stood for 3g (HSPA). I do not get LTE at my house but full bars of 4g service. Also the speed feels like 3g about as fast as my rather sluggish wifi. Where 4g on my last phone was very fast. Talked to Google's advanced tech support and sent her a bug report of my device. She is supposed to get back to me.

Yes it's been extremely frustrating. Spent all of my day off and last night on the phone troubleshooting. Just curious what does your phone display when you have 3g/4g/4gLTE ? Will prob go back to at&t and try a diffrent nano sim just to rule out that possibility.

You really need to look at your APN and make sure it's ATT phone like Nexus4to6p said. Post a shot of your APN settings here.
For me, 3g=H and 4gLTE=LTE. Haven't been in a 4g/HSPA+ area yet. My APN is ATT Nextgenphone.

My 6p specifically says 3g, H and lte I was recently on the Moto x pure that had the same settings. Haven't seen the h+ logo in a long time.
it's probably just a provisioning issue if it's not APN related like others have stated.

H displayed for hspa+
I am sure you must have figured it out by now but just throwing it out there in case it helps.
If you simply took out your SIM card from old phone and put it in N6P (not that there is anything is wrong with that) take your phone and SIM card to AT&T ask them to add your phone (IMEI) and activate LTE on this IMEI. Unless something is wrong with your phone hardware wise, this should do it. Try it, you might get lucky and don't have to send your phone back.
I have the same issue and I've tried A few different APN's. Still on H no matter what APN I use. However, what could be wrong is that when I got my 6P I took my SIM card out of my Note 3, had an AT&T store cut it to Nano size so it would fit the 6P ( They were out of SIM cards that day) and went on my way. I later noticed that I only get H anywhere I go. Called AT&T and they said that the IMEI was updated on my account but the SIM card might be damaged from the store cutting it and to go get a new Nano SIM card. (Free at official AT&T stores) So I'm off to try that and I'll report back and see if that solves the issue. I'm rooted on PureNexus ROM and ElementalX Kernel as well.
Sounds like you are used to the way carrier phones display hspa as 4g and LTE as 4g LTE. This all started when the iPhone came out and on att and 3g was listed as 4g. And LTE as LTE. There is nothing wrong with your phone. Its being reported right by android. You are getting yourself worked up over just the way it's displayed. Let me ask you this, what phone are you coming from?

Well that would be cool if that's all it is! I'm coming from the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
I promise you that is all this is. I came from an ATT branded note 3 as well. Think about it, your old note never said 3g, because your 3g would show as 4G and when you had LTE it would say 4gLTE. You guys are getting the same exact connection as you used to. Its just the way its displayed to you.

Oh Ok. So if 4g is shown as H then what does 4G LTE show as? H+? Is there a way to change it with PureNexus Rom, ElementalX Kernel , or Exposed Modules to what I'm use to seeing? Old habits die hard.
I've used a mediapad x2 for the past year and a half, and have been very pleased with the device, with its one drawback being no LTE connectivity. Hspa+ has largely been adequate, though it's not a steady connection like I saw with LTE on my note 4 in the past, with ten to fifteen second pauses where I only see "H" in the status bar before the plus appears and I get punches of decent speeds up to fifteen mbps or so.
I've waited for a successor to the mediapad, and I feel this is as good as it gets if I want a larger device with phone capabilities. The stereo speakers are another big draw, and frankly I've developed a bit of brand loyalty for Huawei at this point, especially after getting burned by shoddy turnouts from my last two Samsung devices.
I've already purchased it, and I've researched enough to see it doesn't support tmobile LTE here in the US. However, I've noticed it supports more bands than the x2 did, and was curious if anyone could remark on speed or stability of the m3 LTE on that network. I won't receive the device for another week or so, but I'm curious if I should expect exactly what I saw on the x2 in terms of network performance, or perhaps some even minor improvements in that regard.
How is your experience with the Mediapad M3 on TMobile network?
In case the OP doesn't see this, I can comment on T-Mobile compatibility. It took some work with their phone rep, but I did get mine set up on their network. I do not get LTE at all in the Chicago area. I see alot of "H+" and "3g", but never LTE.

It isn't fast. I've had H+ in the car and it is acceptable, but I was waiting on the ground in a plane a few weeks ago and the 3g was slow. Slow to the point that I didn't think I was actually connected for a while. I guess that is to be expected. I've got a Google Project Fi account and I may try that sim card to see if things are any quicker. I just like having the first 200mb for free with Tmobile.

All of the changes were on T-mobile's end. Mine varied a lot as I traveled around the Chicago area. I've since gone to a Project Fi sim card, but have largely the same results. I really think it just depends on your geographic location.
So for anyone interested, this is the compatibility for the M3 on USA networks
https://www.frequencycheck.com/comp...ediapad-m3-td-lte-btv-dl09-32gb/united-states
I have confirmed on TMobile in some locations you will get 3G, but a rep today told me they are decommissioning a lot of these sites to replace them with LTE bands, so coverage will be shrinking.
Welp, there goes an hour of research which led me to the conclusion that this was the right device to buy for somebody who lives on a houseboat. *sigh*
According to Amazon is not compatible with any US LTE Carriers. Not worth paying extra for the cell capability since most of the 3G/HPSA stuff is going away.
