I purchased a NST some time back and rooted it according to the Nook Manager guide here. I then kind of left it gathering dust! Have a bit of free time now so is there an up to date post here on what further modifications I should make to get the best out of it please?
I think I like the look of Launcher 8 the most so will go for that. I notice a sticky about deleting lots of unnecessary apk files....is that still recommended? Any other stuff I should try?
Thank you for any help!

Hi! Glad you're here and interested in NST stuff!
I'd definitely recommend restoring your Nook to stock, updating to 1.2.1, and then getting the most recent NookManager and rerooting, just to make sure you're all up-to-date. For launchers, my favorite is ADW with the Minimalist theme (which is white-on-black), but feel free to try anything you like. I'd highly recommend getting NoRefresh and also multitouch working, because those are just so great. Definitely get a good screen rotation app for easy landscape mode usage. And be sure to get a good file explorer - I use ES File Explorer, and it's fantastic for me.
And I'd recommend deleting:
Gallery.apk
Phone.apk
TelephonyProvider.apk
PicoTTS.apk
TTSService.apk
DemoMode.apk
Browser.apk
Launcher.apk
You *can* delete more, but if you still want all the B&N uses, don't delete much else.
In regards to that "Guide/Tutorial/Tips'n'Tricks" thing, I'd say go for everything in it except the system file deletion - follow my list instead.
Do you have anything specific in mind?
What you should do depends largely on what you want out of your Nook. You will get some here who will say the installation of G-Apps is essential. Personally, I avoid that like the plague.
I have installed AlReader which reads most available ebook formats as long as the book is DRM free. A search of the XDA Nook forums will yield several versions of the Kindle for Android app which can be used to read Kindle books with DRM. I would say these are the essential apps for installation on a eReader. There are several threads in the "Nook Touch Themes and Apps" forum that give recommendations, some with links, to apps that work well on the Nook. In my opinion, the best thread is Old apps for Nook Simple Touch

Thank you for your reply. From my reading here you seem the most active and knowledgeable poster so I'll definitely try out your suggestions. I definitely had 1.2.1 on there before I rooted as I actually only purchased the NST summer 2013. To be honest I couldn't face going through the rooting process again!
I believe NoRefresh is just an app (and I seem to have its apk already stored in my Dropbox).
Not quite sure about how (or why) to install Multi-Touch but I'll go searching.
I don't suppose you might have some pics of your ADW setup at all please my friend?
I grabbed your keyboard.apk from the other thread and I'm waiting patiently for the orientation app!
Finally I always use ES Explorer so I'll delete those apk files and hopefully there'll be a noticeable difference. Can't do anything at the moment as I'm charging the thing up after so it's been inactive so long.
Thank you!

You're right, NoRefresh is just an app, but a very essential one.
You don't REALLY need multitouch unless you have a web browser with pinch-to-zoom (not Opera) or a PDF viewer, but it's still good to have just in case you do ever get one of them.
I attached a screenshot of my homescreen. Hope you like it! BTW, I use my avatar as my wallpaper.
And finally, I am working on getting the rotation app up on the thread. Check there in a few minutes.
Later.
Hey how come the U is purple (in colour)? I feel silly asking....

Would I be correct that all I have to do to enable multi-touch is:
1. Write either the 128mb or 2gb image file to a micro sd with win32diskimager
2. Reboot the Nook with the sd card inside which will boot CWM and then install "multitouch.zip"?
It seems too easy!!! Also what's the difference between the 2gb and 128mb (besides the size! )?

Well, for starters, 2gb would be for a 2gb SD card. 128mb might be for a smaller one.
However, I'd like to know the source where you found this "multitouch.zip". Could you give me a link to it?
Also, what model (Nook Touch/Nook Touch Glow) and what software version (1.1.5/1.2.0/1.2.1) is your Nook device?

Just look under device settings/about your nook, It'll show you what version f/w that you're running, rooting didn't change it.

What Nook model? Nook Touch or Nook Touch Glow?
And I bet you anything the multitouch .zip file is old. It was posted in 2012!
But if you have a Nook Touch Glow, I can share my multitouch files with you and also give you installation instructions.
The multi touch kernel might be old but it was written after the last f/w update so there's really not much need for anything newer. Actually I find that the ability to over and under clock is the more useful part of the kernel day to day than the multi touch.

The kernel that I'm using, it's been awhile but I'm pretty sure that it's the 166 version, allows you to under/over clock the cpu from the default 800 mhz using an app such as cpu control, mine is currently set to 1000 mhz, makes things a little bit zippier without too much effect on battery life.

Whoa! That sound wicked!
I'm using the USBHost/Multitouch kernel found at this thread (I only made the thread, not the files). Do you think I could incorporate the over/underclock feature into this kernel? If so, could you tell me how?
Edit - NVM, found it after a teeny bit of research. The kernel is uImage.

I have been playing around with ATT Android phones over the last several months. I started with a Nexus One, nice phone very fast. Then purchased an Aria for the fun of it... again fast phone but too small. Lastly yesterday I picked up the Captivate, and with a 1ghz, the Aria seems faster than this phone. Seems to lag between screens and boot. Is it just me or anyone else see this? Is there a quick fix for this? Anyone?
Oh I hate touchwiz, worthless crap for a UI.....loaded ADW launcher instead
thanks
Larry
It really is a software thing with Touchwiz. After I installed Launcher pro I never looked back and it has been a lot faster.
There may be a bunch of apps running slowing the phone down. I have Advanced task killer, and kill a bunch of app every once in a while when It starts feeling slow.

Where did you find this Launcher pro, and how much faster is it than stock?
Check #17 out in this post. The Euro version owners have known about this for some time.
There are some fixes - but, most likely not until we can get some custom ROMS.
Launcher Pro helps a lot, just search the app market for it.
Ive been doing side by side comparisons of my N1 running CM6 and the Captivate all day. The Captivate is faster 95% of the time. Both running ADW launcher.
You can load ADW or LauncherPro from the Market. When you set as default home, you will not be able to use "Touchwiz" widgets.......

A crapload faster. After installing it, the device is like lightning , haven't had any pauses. Just search the market. Think it is a beta.
Yes to all new samsung galaxy S owners get rid of the ****ty touchwiz launcher it sucks and its laggy as hell, get launcher pro instead.
whats the best widget pack to replace the touchwiz ones
is there a way to port sense widgets? (push from a htc/pull to captivate or something)

eventually. Widget packs.. hmm you should just try out new stuff, explore and what not
Also, new news so to speak - LauncherPro will be coming out with a lot of integrated widgets that are similar to the SenseUI widgets.
Koxx - here on xda has made some really great widgets. I think I have purchased them all. MoonSpoon (used to be a very active themer and now is a lurker due to being busy elsewhere) made themes for all of Koxx's widgets.
If I just want to go back to the default Android drawer can I install the Launcher.apk from a Cyanogen 5.8 rom?
Even with Launcher Pro there seems to be some lagging issues. On the Vibrant thread, the a subject on Fixing Stalling/Lagging. On the vibrant it seems you can partition your SD card and have the files run off of it. They said that it runs faster on the sd card then the built in memory card. I trying to do this procedure but kind of stuck. I can't seem to get the phone in download mode. Still searching around if i can find out i let you guys know. Meantime check out the thread and if you find out or know how post it up on the Captivate side. Not much instructions on "HOW TO MOD CAPTIVATE" in our thread.

I did it. It works great.
No more stalling at the moment, and my Quadrant score went up 100 points as well.
But be sure to follow the steps, and make sure you have enough room in data/data, and keep in mind that you can still fill data/data up with app installation. Google Earth is particularly bad about eating space here.
And keep in mind that the Galaxy S people that did this find that eventually it starts to stall again, so this is a band-aid.
When I get home tonight, I'll try the better, more effective SD card method, don't have an easy way to make an /ext3 partition on an SD card at the moment.

You need an external SD card, a program that will let you partition the ext3 format, and then you just need to follow their commands. Where are you getting stuck, maybe I can help guide you.

Does anyone know the speed on it, since a lot of my high read apps have huge issues with my transformer. I wanted to also know if there was anyway to point or force them to run off my class 10 card I got in it.

Nope, the biggest issues are when just pictures or chandroid is running. They move fine but slow to a crippled crawl in a bit, as for a task killer I don't have any unless it comes stock off the custom rom.
Honestly it is annoying as hell when it gets to a craw and then force close over and over.

No, they both work fine on my nook and my hd2 and my other tablet. It's just the newest one I got (ie the transformer) that I started to notice the issue. I worked with the dev from chandroid and we tried everything and he said as he looked over the crash report that there was nothing wrong with the app.
On the stock build of OS, he said it was an issue being caused by splashtop stuff. Is there anyway to rip every program out by the core needed to run and let me add them one at a time to test?

What is the best way to remove anything/everything? Cause if I got it backed up and if I blow the OS I can just do a recovery.
The easiest way would be to freeze the app with titanium backup, you could also just manually rename it or delete it.

Should be obvious. Does it look and act identical to the transformer?
Once thing I have found is that apps can run well on older versions of android but have issues with honeycomb. Like cut the rope, it crashes and is slower to load on the tablet but blazes on my evo. Asked the dev and he said its not yet developed for honeycomb.
My TFs internal memory is plenty fast.
Just root it without someones Rom. Stock would be your goal to see if a Rom affects it.
Watchdog from the market would help. It would show you what apps are running and how much they are using the Cpu
When I use Dolphin HD or Pad I can see when it's hanging up...not loading the page then..it dies lol freaking apps.

I will try that, honestly I just want a way to see what's going on with it. I am not sure if it's using all the memory or what with all the images it loads. Since my problems always come from mass images loading.
Possibly just eating up your RAM then - the SSD shouldn't be (that) active if it's image loading and not saving.

Well like with just pictures, it's a big display of thumbnails for viewing your images. I know it can cashe the data to make it faster but that just seems to make it slower, as for chandroid the longer I use it the slower it gets. So maybe it's not purging old data?
Not sure if anyone has seen the following Script that @zeppelinrox has made but I have tried it on my Evo 3D and Transformer and it works great! No more home screen reloads!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276
I run it on my 3d and my wife's evo 4g, but I haven't tried it on the transformer yet. I'm gonna have to try it. It works wonders on my wife's evo but doesn't make a huge difference on my 3d. I also tried the 3g booster and kick associated kernel tweaks but It ended in freezes and reboots that deleting the script's wouldn't fix. I never tried just using one of those 2 scripts to see what was the problem, I just restored a backup. I know the 3g tweak didn't help those cuz after multiple speed test it was the same or slower than before.

I think that option is for the actual script run speed, so you can read the print-out. After that are the actual 17 choices of the script. I could be wrong about the 0/1/2/3 option, but I think it's just to let you select how fast you want the script to actually run and print.
Just applied this today on my TF, used option 6 as well, not really sure what the effect is yet as I didn't really have problems to begin with.
i use option 8 and it feels faster with dock especially
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
At best this does nothing to improve your TF. In actuality it screws with the way android handles app management. Its likely to create more problems than it "solves"
And because the "dev" of this script requested.....I did install this and had to wipe and reinstall my rom to get rid of the mess it made.
Closing this - NO need to spam the board by placing this in each and every device you can imagine. This belongs in Android Software/Hacking as it's not device specific.

Well, I used to have a Nook Simple touch until it was stepped on, so I'm getting a Color. Before I get it though, I'm just have a few questions.
1. For rooting this thing, how complicated is it? It's not so much it being too complex, it's more of do you have to re-partition it or downgrade to root and things like that.
2. How long does the battery last on this when you're constantly using this? I plan on mostly reading, taking notes in class, and just experimenting with it.
3. How compatible is this with Android apps with the rooted stock firmware? I've used a Nook Touch, and half the stuff didn't even launch. I'm assuming that's not the case on this.
4. How well does Cyanogen mod run from a card? Is it better to install it to the flash?
5. Is it better to root it or just use a custom rom?

There are some people that like the rooted stock, especially since it has been upgraded by B&N. I did not mind rooted stock and it could run almost anything. It was not difficult to root. But I was constantly worried that it would get updated over the air and wipe out my root. Then I tried CM7 and I was blown away. It was fantastic.
Running CM7 on SD works great. And it runs almost as fast. I can't tell any difference myself.
I personally recommend not doing anything with stock at first. Put CM7 on SD and see how you like it. Some people like leaving stock on the main memory because the Nook reader on stock is better than on CM7. It can read kids books, textbooks, etc. (edit: And with the CM7 boot menu it is easy to boot back and forth without taking out the card.) If you end up liking CM7 and not using stock you can always move your CM7 permanently to main memory.
Battery life is not great compared to the original kindle or original nooks. The color touch screen really eats the battery. I am on mine constantly and pretty much have to charge every night. But it does sleep good if you are not using it.
I don't think you will regret getting the Color.
The guide for installing to SD is here:

Awesome! That's actually just what I was needing. I wasn't really looking forward to having to take the card out every time I wanted to rebooting.
Is there USB Host for the NC?
Edit: And another question: is it possible to configure network settings like DNS on this? I'm guessing stock won't but Cyanogenmod will.

There is usb host built into CM. Not stock. I don't know the answer about dns. It think you can manually edit the connection settings like static ip, etc.
One last question, what size SD card should I get for Cyanogenmod?

Get any size you want, but it runs best from SanDisk class 4

You should take a look at the Racks uSD dual boot post too. I have been using that dual boot image with subsequent updates and it has been great and easy.

You don't have to. The bootloader (cyanoboot) has a menu. You can choose which you want to boot into, and you can set the default action to boot "through" sdcard to emmc unless told otherwise (if you want to change the normal boot behavior, which is to SD if it's bootable)
Hello Folks!
I just picked up a Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight. It's a sweet little device. But I'm addicted to rooting and loading custom ROMs on all of my tablets. So I'm tempted to do that to my Nook Simple Touch. However, doing that to an e-ink device is fundamentally different than on all of my other LCD-screen tablets because most apps/interfaces aren't geared toward an e-ink display.
So... I'd like to ask a couple questions:
What drove you to change your Nook Simple Touch from stock to custom ROM?
What functions do you love best about having it custom?
Do you miss anything about having it stock?
What do you like least about having it custom?
Thanks in advance for your input!

Being able to checkout library books right on the NST - no more PC download, plug the NST into the PC and copy the book to the NST.

Does your library supply DRM free ebooks, or have you found something that works with Adobe Digital Editions DRM?

Less tidy than stock.
FYI, I used NookManager.

They are DRM books. There are a couple of readers you can install that do ADE DRM. I used Aldiko for a while until someone pointed out a working version of Overdrive Media Console. See this thread. I believe Mantano also does ADE DRM. Search the forum for a working version.

Ah, sorry, I didn't make myself clear; even the stock Nook reader does ADE DRM, once authorised by the Windows ADE application (Aldiko can authorise itself, if a valid Adobe ID is supplied to it and it has Internet connectivity). My library supplies .acsm files which contain a link to the actual epub, which then needs to be authorised by the Windows ADE application before it can be copied to the Nook and read. So without something on Android to parse .acsm files and authorise the epubs, I can't download directly on my Nook. If you've got a solution to that, I'd be very interested in hearing it!

Yup, as I said no more PC download and copy to the NST. Both OMC & Aldiko launch the browser from within the app and allow you to browse the library, checkout books and download them directly on the NST. They take care of parsing the acsm file, getting authorization and downloading the actual epub file. It still baffles me why we have to root to get this feature as this has been available on Android phones for years. It makes no sense for dedicated reading devices not to have the feature. Its probably marketing morons at B&N that don't want you to have an easy way to read books for free so you'll buy from them.

Aha, yes, I see now I've tried it in Alidko! My library isn't on Overdrive, but adding it as a catalog to Aldiko works. The only snag appears to be that the browser doesn't handle deeply-nested web sites terribly well, and begins ignoring clicks on links after a few levels. But it'd do in a pinch. Thanks!
Will using a Custom ROM improve the terrible battery life?
I am being abit vague, I bought the Nook Simple Touch and on the box it said 'Battery lasts 2 months with wifi off and 30 minutes reading per day'. I hardly ever read and I only bought this for my holiday and also got it for £29. I charged the NST up and ive noticed over a week the battery has completely diminished.
Wifi is off and ive done no reading. All the decide seems to do is change pictures on the screen saver all the time.

Short answer: Yes.
Slightly longer answer: You can keep stock rom but rooting and tweaking makes a big difference. Changing the kernel and setting the cpu frequency using setcpu so improves battery life alot. Stop things syncing improves battery life alot.
If you don't want barnes and noble stuff (if your using say cool reader) then even more so.
Remember don't switch NST fully off it actually chews more battery than you think in that mode.
Also don't force nst to go asleep by pressing power button just let it timeout into screensaver.
I think remember someone said somewhere with everything tweaked the unit dropped 1 or 2 percent per day when not used.
That's odd that your battery experience has been so poor. I just got my NSTG on Monday and I've been reading on it a lot, plus I have backed it up, installed a new ROM, wiped it, restored it, probably five times now just messing around. I keep going back to stock ROM.
Anyway, I charged it Monday and I've got 84% battery left. I know I've spent several hours reading and at least a couple hours reading with the glowlight on. So for me, that's pretty darn good battery life to have only used 16% in five days of heavy use. Sure that won't last me the 2 months that they're quoting but, I'm not using it 30 minutes a day, I'm using it much more.

I have also just bought one so I can't claim any expertise, however, this sounds odd. I just let mine go to sleep and it always shows the same picture of trees. If yours is changing its picture then it must have something running to do so which will run the battery down.
Perhaps someone with more knowledge can say why yours is doing this?

Yeah, the stock browser sucks. Then again, pretty much every browser I've tried on the NST works poorly. I believe you can use another browser to download the ACSM file and then go into Aldiko and import it. Not as seamless but may make navigating your library site possible.
Well I've been on holiday this week and I can say the battery life is terrible. I must of used it 2 or 3hours per day reading only 400 pages and after 6 days the battery went flat. Luckily I don't read all the time, I kinda envy kindle owners for the battery life

Did you leave wifi on? I get MUCH better life than that with wifi off.
Yup Wifi has definitely been off

I've never had a battery drain problem so I can't give you any solutions. I see a good 3 or 4 weeks or more with the kind of usage you describe. You might want to read through this thread on possible battery drain solutions. Also, do a search on battery in this forum for some other threads.
I use my rooted NTS with XCSoar when I fly on glider.
It's very useful because contrast on the sunlight is awesome.
I use all fiches from custom rom:
FastScreen
UsbHost
UsbSound

Note that Barnes & Nobles' stated life of 2 months is only for half an hour of reading per day. So your 6 days is the equivalent of somewhere between 24 and 36 B&N days. More if you turn lots of pages.
