Hi
i would like to know some of your opinions if you have both the Galaxy Note and also a Nexus 7
i have had my note for almost a year now - generally all pretty good
but for some things i am thinking about the nexus 7
maybe for a bigger ebook reader - kindle / BBC news / Flipboard etc- i have a lot of books which would benefit perhaps on a bigger screen
Tegra 3 - one of the reasons why i would like the nexus 7 - some games can only be played on a tegra 3 device - i am not a really big game player but sometimes would like to play Horn, Dark meadow and the other tegra 3 only games which cannot be played on the Note
general web browsing / ocassional movie watching when out and about would be nice on a bigger screen
i live in europe so google voice is not available at this time - so i wont really use it for any phone calls - maybe skype but ocassionally
i am trying to establish how much of a use it will get in order to see if its worth to purchase it..
please share your useages and experiences with owning both
Actually I have both items, G Note and Nexus 7
I bought the Nexus 7 two months ago, and the Gx Note last week.
Since I bought the Note, I've never used again the Nexus 7 (I'm selling it)
I've downloaded some Tegra Only games and only tried them for a while and never played again.
The Nexus has a bit bigger screen than Note, it is more fast and the touch responsiveness is better, but I prefer to have a decent "All In One" device like the Note (with a good replaceable battery and micro SD slot whith tons of films in it) than having to carry with another device only for a "little more of screen"
I have both too. But I find the Note to be slightly better for everyday use. It's decent sized and runs games (that I play) perfectly fine. Screen is a bit small (as opposed to the 7) for web browsing, but that's something I can live with. On the other hand, the nexus 7 screen is right in the middle of the Note and a 10" tablet. For certain apps, if I run the phone version on the 7, the UI's too big (big buttons, big text); but if I run the tablet version of the app, texts are often too small to read on the 7 inch and some buttons are harder to press as they've been resized to fit the 7" screen. Sorry for my english but I think you get my point.
Now that we have jelly bean running on our exynos powered phones, the whole performance argument doesn't fly. Pretty sure the note outperforms anything with a tegra 3, despite having half as many cores. Exynos ftw!
Apple innovates and Samsung copies, huh? Tell that to my Galaxy Note.
I have the note and 2 nexus 7 had 2 more but sold them, the nexus is much faster (all are running paranoid android 2.5 ROMs if I were going to read , check emails , look up something on the internet it would be no question the nexus 7, if I wanted something small / more portable to check something quick then the note is better plus if need some to make phone calls without being linked to another device ie. Tablet talk then obviously the note is your choice, even though I don't use the note as a phone anymore I would never sell it

Hi There,
I have a Nexus 7 and a GN. The Nexus is lightning fast, and a real pleasure for games or as a e-reader. I use both devices every day, and I love both.
I use my Nexus for navigation in my car (with car mount). The GN sits in my console, connected to BT for calls.
The one thing I do find is that the Nexus connects to GPS faster, and the nav app (Waze) seems snappier.
Whilst I do love the Nexus 7, as it is an amazingly capable tablet for a very respectable price, there is very little point in any 7" tablet in my opinion so long as you own any of the newer Android devices that often employ a 4.5+ inch display and especially if you own a phone/tablet hybrid such as the Galaxy Note. In my personal opinion, a tablet should be around the 10" mark like the iPad. It is just a nice size for greater productivity, whilst still maintaining greater portability than a laptop.

My Note is running the leaked 4.1.1 rom and the nexus the stock 4.1.2 from google and the nexus is a lot faster than the Note

Same here - have both and am pleased with both. Use the Nexus 7 more for movies and books.
thank you all for this feedback and opinions
a lot of good points have been made here regarding speed of the nexus, size and usages what you have
from what i have evaluated certain tasks are better suited on the nexus and other tasks are more geared towards the note..due to its size etc
lots of things to think about here....
I have Note and tried nexus. Just doesn't feel big enough and had other limitations that didn't help. My Note and Transformer prime work a lot better as a combo for me.

I have a Galaxy Note and a Nexus 7. Although its a nice device i hardly use my nexus 7 as my Note can do everything it can (except the tegra3 specific games) but theyre not really that good tbh. Nexus 7 with Jelly Bean was much smoother but i have since installed super nexus rom on my note and theyre pretty much the same now.
My Nexus is mostly a home device for me until I get my hands on the 3g version then i will bring it out and will be doing mostly my surfing and emails with it. My Gnote is mostly just phone calls and occasional quick surfing, whatsapp, Facebook, etc.
I reckon a tablet and phone have their own specific uses and each supplement the cons of the other. Everyone should have both!

First of all hi to all of you, I am new to the xda forums and a proud owner of a galaxy note which will soon get a custom rom .
I was also thinking about buying a Nexus 7 mainly for reading ebooks but I am unsure about the display quality - isn't the notes super amoled far superior?

I have both aswell and happy with both of them. One would expect the screen quality of Gnote to be better due to the super amoled tech it uses but in reality it have black clipping issues which make watching low quality videos a problem.

is the Galaxy Note S-Pen working on the Nexus 7 ??
if yes - how is the experience - same as the note or better /worse
I too have both. I love everything about the Note (previous phones were Nexus One followed by Nexus S) except what it's missing... the Nexus experience. The Nexus 7 reminded me what I'm missing. My wife inherited my Nexus S and I still envy her smooth clean experience with a phone that's 2 years old. She has JB with Google Now and all the goodies... I sit here with a beautiful 5.3" screen, and incredibly powerful hand held computer, but stuck on ICS. When will we get JB on the Note (Samsung is in no hurry. They want to sell new phones)? I considered rooting and installing a rom, but after following this forum since I purchased my Nexus One, I decided to stay stock. Too many problems.
After much thought I've decided to sell my Note and will pre-order the Nexus 4 as soon as it hits the Play Store. I will never buy a phone or tablet again without it being pure Google.

Blacks are a lot blacker with the note but I was surprised that the nexus looks much sharper and detailed. Maybe is my lame screen protector not sure.

Looks good but Personally I would wait to see the Note 3 before spending the bundle they will want for this device out the gate. Then if the Note 3 disappoints, the S4 will be less expensive and development will be in full swing. Then again the Note 3 will have any glitches corrected as well. and possibly the flexible screen
It looks good, but not good enough to remove me from my note 2. I dont see myself using any of the features they advertised. In a way I'm glad because my wallet has been spared, at least till the note 3 comes out.
I would rather wait for the Note 3 also. By then hopefully we will get the pholed screen and better processor
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
I don't think the Note 3 will have that flexible screen as they recently said they may go to LCDS.
I personally rather have a Note 2 over the s4.

yh that is my biggest fear regarding the note 3. I simply cannot have the phone any bigger than the note 2
The note 2 has got me spoiled when it comes to screen size.
i wouldnt want to loose .5 on a screen.
I'd rather wait for the note 3. and i wouldnt mind it being a little bigger, as long as its pocketable lol
yes i have the GT-N7000 and i saw the note 2 and its amazing ,, but the release of the s4 yesterday its like ummm;.. its amazing yes but i thing the galaxy note 3 will have alot more features than this ,, i read it could have more powerful CPU than the s4 with 3 GB RAM and a new S-Pen and android key lime pie 5
so yeah here is features ,, im waiting for it
unless i get a note 2 as a gift lol
It's kind of surprising how many people that bought the Note(s) don't use S Pen and S Note. I guess they bought it for the larger/better display. For those that use S Pen/S Note heavilly (I'm one of them) giving them up for the SGS4 just because it's "shinier" is a non-starter. The N3 should be out by the fall and have even more features than the SGS4 and SGS4 owners can help Samsung troubleshoot some of the new features being introduced. Hopefully some of the non-h/w dependent features of the SGS4 will trickle down to the N2 in the meantime. I'd love to have S Voice Drive.
Note 3 over galaxy s4
i have a upgrade comming so ill try the s4..... but doubt it will trump my note2 !
Definitely N3
I had a galaxy S2 and when the s3 came out I chose the Note 1. I do not regret this and having seen the S4, which I think is quite a good phone, I will definitely wait. Because I will get all the benefits of he tech that went into S4 with a bigger screen and S-pen (both of which I love tremendously). I am actually quite excited about N3, especially as I will be going from N1. I am really surprised that no one is challenging Samsung with a Stylus phablet.
When the note 2 came out. It had a lot more features than the s3. Now the s4 is out does it means that note 3 will be a lot better phone? I have the s3. Which i had the note 2
Tried walking around with the note 2 in my pocket.. I am way too skinny, felt like a football pad haha. It is pretty, if i was a bigger dude, I would get one.
If S4 battery, screen are much better than Note 2, I will buy it at the first day. If not I will wait for Note 3.

Flexible screen won't come in a million years.
I'm in favour of the Note 2 design. If they bring that disgusting carbon-fiber-ish design on Note 3, it's a deal breaker.
I had a Galaxy S3, as did my wife. We both have note 2's now (didn't loose money on the switch here so its all good) I really like my note 2 but sadly I don't seem to use the S-Pen and related features as much and neither does she. I guess we've been around android phones that never had those features to fully get used to it. I might be getting the S4 for her and getting rid of her Note 2 as at times I heard her say that she likes the S3 better. I think size does play a role here.
As for myself, unless I find better use of its features I will either switch to the S4 (also depends on development), or wait and see what phones come out. Either way, I'm planning on keeping one of the Note 2's around just incase i want to switch back.
Here I am. the Galaxy S4 just like a mini Note2. Eeeee I donnot feel like changing for it as Note 3 may be better

get the S4, so much better than the Note 2, it's faster, better camera, more pocketable, more pixels, better screen, higher ppi, better software, longer battery life and so on.
The only thing Note 2 has is the stylus.
S4 is definitely a better option while doing a direct comparison. Since the price is almost same for both the phones its a pretty valid question.
The are 2 departments in which note 2 excels:
1. Considerably Huge battery
2. Spen with handwriting recognition and a bunch of other features.
So decide accordingly. If u can live without these 2 features go for S4 without hesitating.

Note 2.... Hands down...
10 Months back i was in the same situation as u... but i opted Note 2 and very much satisfied that i made a right choice.
It's been 10 months now but i still don't feel need to upgrade to Note 3 either. This beast really rocks.
Now I've updated it to 4.3 as well, through OTA
S4 is a phone like all other phones, But Note 2 is "Note 2"
Note 2 FOREVER !It's very good

Used to be a S4 owner but i sold it to buy Note 2 and i don't regret.
S4 over Note 2
- better display quality but not a huge difference , our eyes cannot make such a big difference between their ppi's.
- better camera , here you can see the differences.
- newer software ( but honestly i still prefer android 4.3 instead of 4.4 )
Note 2 over S4
- way much better battery , around 6+ hours of screen on with 1h games + 1h talk + 80% of the day wi-fi on
- better gaming , since the display it's bigger
- nicer design
This is my opinion,i hope it will be helpful for you.
Thanks for the input everyone! I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the Note II. I went with my gut on the Infuse and that was a great phone, now I'm going with my gut again on the Note.

Go with Galaxy S4
Seriously? Please add some context. Both phones are good but they're meant for different people. Well, sort of.
S4 is a more "mainstream" phone. A phone nobody will have problem using. A phone that is "compact" and has all the features necessary and more. It is meant to act as a phone suitable for everybody.
Note 2,different story. Bigger screen, stylus and note taking apps etc. Do the math. Note is basically a phone originally meant to replace paper and pencil. Of course it's much more than that. In fact most of us buy it because it has bigger screen. Also it's kind of less "mainstream" if you ask me. Want to differ from the crowd? Lol just joking.
I got Note not because I have particularly large hands but I still enjoy a big screen and like taking notes etc and act all cool by using the stylus. Joking again, I find the stylus rather useful.
So there you go, pick your side. Note(pun not intented) that S4 Is one generation ahead(year older), but the under-the-hood differences aren't too notable if you ask me. Personally I love big screens. Makes power usage easy and fun. Sure the big screen can be a disadvantage sometimes, can't argue with that.

I would just wait another month and get S5 (almost as big as note 2, much better performance, but no stylus.... )

Note 2 is 5.5"
Someone had to start this topic, I guess it is going to be me.
I've been a note2 user since the release in 2012, never felt enough contempt to upgrade as note 3 had incremental improvements, besides most of the features were eventually ported to note 2, but now I believe it is time.
Note 2 is still a fantastic phone and I don't feel restricted by any heavy games ( just occasional gamer) or apps, the main bump for me will be camera and I also love what Samsung done with microphones in note 4, I have to record a lot of conversations and the feature that able to identify which direction the voice is coming from might be very handy. I'm a huge fan of oculus rift and the announcement of Gear Vr was very intriguing as I believe it is the future of entertainment and having advantage of note 4 gorgeous screen...
Are you excited about new note 4? Are you going to upgrade? Satisfied with the improvements Samsung made to our beloved Note line? How do you find new s pen features?
What are your thoughts in Gear Vr? Availability in different countries etc.

I want that rom on my note2. I don't see enough advances to upgrade to the note4 hardware. I'll wait for the note5 next year.
if someone can port Note 4 S Pen feature to Note 2, than i probably won't upgrade
there's some disappointment for Note 4 hardware, but overall i like the improvement from Note 2
Will probably upgrade to that too since my mobile plan expires next year. Looking at it's features, it'll be a waste to install custom firmwares on it. But then, I said that for my Note 2 and it stayed at stock for 1 week only lol.

That's the best reason I have heard so far why someone wouldn't buy note edge/4!!:good:
Expected a 64bit processor plus 4 gig ram also
No more improvement in battery but
Its worth to upgrade from note 2 no doubt
Those sensors display and features plus power it does have everything in the market
Why upgrade to Note 4
I was waiting for Note 4 but there is for now no reason to upgrade. I Like the S-Pen but I was hoping that the note 4 will be waterresistent like S5 but it isn't so if I need a new Phone then S5.
Really I don't need Gear VR and no Gear S. And Pay maybe a 100 bugs only for the Metal around? No thats not worth.
Hope there will be an APP for the Pen Features.

I believe exynos variant is 64 bit, benchmarks are higher on exynos as well. Nevertheless as far as I know developers don't really like exynos due to its closed source nature

That's my feeling as well. A faster processor is nice, but I'm not really having trouble with a slow phone. a UV sensor is a bit meh, it's a nice novelty but not a reason to upgrade. The screen might be worth considering but I'm not really watching entire movies or taking that much pictures with it so I'll survive.
The main drawbacks for me are
- No water/dust protection like the S5
- No 64 bit processor for future proofing.
The edge seems like a nice novelty, but I'm afraid it won't be used by many apps.
The other phones like the Sony Z3, LG G3, moto X all have their own drawbacks (smaller screen, slower, ... ) so I think the note will have to be in service for a while It's just too good, so I don't have that much of a compelling reason to switch.

That USB 3.0 was only helpful if you are connecting your phone to PC to transfer stuff between mobile and pc(USB 3.0 port of PC).When it comes to charging your phone several users of Note 3 mentioned that there was no difference in charging speeds when they used USB 3.0 or USB 2.0. Also samsung has implemented fast charge in note 4 which is supposed to charge the device 30% faster than usual.
My mobile contract is up for renewal so I'm getting the Note 4 as soon as it's released in the UK. The upgrades to the screen and camera are worth it alone.
Those people saying they need 4GB of RAM on a phone need to have a word with themselves. There is absolutely no need to have 4GB RAM on a mobile device. Even desktop PCs rarely utilise 4GB RAM at any one time (in "normal" use, obviously editing full HD/4K video or suchlike will require ludicrous amounts of RAM).
Similarly, the main benefit of a 64-bit CPU is the ability to address more than 4GB of memory space. Again, there's little benefit to having a 64-bit capable mobile device. In the end they just become numbers to impress your mates with down the pub.
My Note 2 still runs every app/game I throw at it with no slowdown or lag, and it never complains of being low on RAM, and it's *only* got 2GB

true...current note 4 release have upset me because
1.missing 4gb ram
2.camera isn't 20 or 21 mp
3.missing dust proof water proof and anti scratch abilities
4.no major hardware updates its not 64bit cpu..while qualcom have announced one 810
5.missing nfc payment
6.not enough slimmer or thinner
and a lot to say but as i love note series so don't want to downgrade reputation
I've got my Note II the same released day, I skipped the Note 3, its so much configured that I don't think will get the Note 4 this time around again, or may be I will after a while when the prices drop substantially..
maybe i go with the note 4
especially with the camera and spen improvement
I got my note 2 in 2013, have no intention on upgrading atm but if there is a price drop I might go for the note 3 as there are no big diffrence to note 4
I have been really waiting to buy the Note 4 since months. I didn't buy the LG G3 mainly due to it's poor performance on the QHD display. Just came across this video on YouTube of Note 4 playing the GTA sanandreas and now I am starting to get a bit skeptical about it's performance. Just hope the game might have not been optimized for Note 4 yet ??
Here is the link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQ4WgowL3Ls
Here is an interesting article that explains about the poor gaming peformance of Note 4. According to this article, iPhone 6/6 Plus is superior and miles ahead when it comes to gaming. Am i missing something here ? Why is there a lot of difference ?
http://appleinsider.com/articles/14...r-graphics-performance-vs-apple-iphone-6-plus
Clearly a camera issue. He even says in the video that the performance was closer to him playing on a console(PS2/Xbox). Who buys a phone to play games like this anyway? Get a console or a PC to do that, dude! Use your phone to play simple games, like pac-man, or angry birds. No one should expect a phone to perform flawless gaming. That's not it's primary function, just be happy with what you get. Not once have I heard Samsung pitch this phone as a "gaming" phone. It's the Note series man, it's meant for business/productivity/etc, not playing games like a teen. Get a PSP.
Yeah lol. I have been a Samsung fan. I used Galaxy S, S2, S4, Note, Note 2. When you are buying such a high-end phone, you would expect to play games also on your device. If at all you need is to play Angry birds, etc. I would be more than happy with my Note 2 or S4. And yeah top end phones do perform flawless gaming nowadays. Technology has evolved to such a point that no one really feels the need of a PSP anymore. Hope u got my point

Yeah, I get your point. I'm just saying, don't set your standards so high that just because one aspect of it doesn't perform flawlessly, that stops you from recognizing a good phone. I'm not too big on mobile gaming, but the games I do play are a little less graphic/cpu extensive than GTA, so maybe I'm bias. This is a great phone from what I've heard from other users, and what I've experienced in store myself. Not PERFECT, but a definite upgrade to someone like me who currently rocks a Galaxy Nexus haha
I agree it's a great phone no doubt about that. Nothing would stop me from getting this phone. But i was a little worried that's it.
Its quallcom version adreno gpus always had optimization problems with gta games dunno why

My nexus 4 lags alot in high settings htc one m7 and g2/g3 too my exynos note 3 not laggy though
For games resolution shouldn't be an issue, none of the games would run natively at QHD resolution. Forget QHD, most games won't run natively at FHD.
And to @krishelnino, put the threads in appropriate section. Such threads should be under "Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting" forum.
I saw that Gaming video and he says that the performance on standard settings is excellent, smoother than Sony Z3. However, when he maxed out the settings the Gameplay sucked ,worse than Z3. Probably due to display resolution differences.
That's to be expected but what I want to see is how Exynos deals in the same scenario-Max settings! @DelBoy any chance you test your Exynos beast on max settings (see video from 2:50+) and see if performs better than Snapdragon? Thanks!

Clearly a camera issue. He even says in the video that the performance was closer to him playing on a console(PS2/Xbox).

You didn't watch the entire video. He said it runs well on the lowest settings, so when he upped the quality things got very, very bad.
RR3 ran and looked great when I installed it at BB on a demo. Device never got hot and I played it for about 15 minutes. I wanted to walk out with it.
Both GPUs (Adreno 420 and Mali T760) can't handle such high resolutions very well. But it might have other reasons too, as some games doesn't support such high resolutions natively (as it has been said before).

I doubt that it is the Qualcomm version.
All currently available Note 4 models have the Exynos chip.
The first batch of Qualcomm Notes should be out on the 10th or 17th October.
I also doubt the game has been patched to maximize performance o. The s805 and or Exynos either. It takes weeks for devs to patch games after the new wave of games comes out guys...ask Any Apple fan how the 6+,handles most games at present (re:worse than the 5s)

It is the Snapdragon variant SM-N910F.Have a look at his previous video from his channel.
Is there a phone that can run this one max settings without a hiccup? If so, which phone?
The Nvidia Shield Tablet can... Seriously, are people really using their phones as gaming devices.

My Samsung Galaxy Tab S can, and its a higher resolution. So I would lean towards the game needing an update for newer devices.
