You can try with AutoRec, as long as you are rooted it should work. And then through the new recovery (TWRP) apply any stock kernel with knock code enabled because you will lose it if you are with 4.4.2. Dorimanx' is pretty decent http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2725023.

I have recently rooted my S4 and would like to flash Paranoid Android but am currently stuck trying to figure out which recovery to you. My last phone was a Droid X2 where the options were very limited for basically everything, as it has a very locked bootloader, which made things easy. What would be the most stable recovery to use? How should I flash it (Odin or otherwise)?

TWRP works great, and you can flash it using the Goo Manager app in the Play Store.

I had terrible luck with Goo. I use Philz Touch for recovery & never had an issue, yet
Thanks guys. I'll give goomanager a try and if that doesn't work I'll switch to Philz. @P1NK13P13 how would I flash that? Would I just use ROM Manager?

Personally, I used Odin to install. It was super easy & fast. I'd type it out, but I'm at work. Here's everything you need to know:
How to install: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39433857&postcount=4
Link to entire Philz Touch recovery thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201860
Thanks. I was looking at the thread in the development section and didn't notice the link to the instructions.

Hi guys,
I am a relative newb to xda and rooting etc and have a query that hopefully someone can help me with. I have flashed a pre rooted mf8 rom via odin and would now like to add the loud volume mod to my s4 i9505! As far as I understand the mod has to be flashed via custom recovery. I still have stock recovery on my s4 and I am not sure on how to flash a custom recovery or which one I should use. Apologies if this is the wrong thread and thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,
Look HERE
Choose one of the 4 recoveries available .
Installation instructions are on the thread.
as far as i know there are currently 3 custom recoverys available.
im using philz touch recovery.
download newest version as .tar.md5, put it in odin as pda, and flash it just like you did with the pre rooted rom.

Thanks... just flashed via odin... worked a treat. Now for that sound mod file.. Thanks again!
My only nandroid is a stocked MDC rooted rom - unmodified other than root and recovery. I can get the upgrade notification and it takes me to recovery to upgrade when I select reboot and then it asks me if I want to replace or remove my recovery (or something like that). My question is if I do select that will I just upgrade to pure stock MDL/MF9 without root and with stock recovery? Or is that possible?

So I put the safestrap recovery on my i1337 in hopes of flashing a stock rom to it. I followed all steps, and the rom was already loki'd. Now when I boot my phone goes to a black screen and the led flashed a vibrates every few seconds. I still can access the recovery menu and restore with my backup so that isn't a problem. I just want to know what I'm doing wrong and also maybe a link to a proper tutorial on what to do if I am doing something wrong. The rom I was using was KANGAKAT Google-Edition 4.4
You can only use 4.2.2 TW and 4.2.2 GPE. 4.4 is a nogo.
I advise reading both the dev thread located in the development section and the QA thread in the QA section thoroughly.

Get out of the development thread gosh..
Anyway everything you need is over in the android development forum for g2. This too is a development forum, there shouldn't be and q&a here!

Just got my hopes up about a new rom! ;_;
The easiest method is to use AutoRec to install TWRP...

Follow the post above unless you want a different recovery. Boot in recovery mode (volume down + power), adb or mod for advanced power settings. Wipe and install how ever the ROM says too.
