Hi guys,
I am a relative newb to xda and rooting etc and have a query that hopefully someone can help me with. I have flashed a pre rooted mf8 rom via odin and would now like to add the loud volume mod to my s4 i9505! As far as I understand the mod has to be flashed via custom recovery. I still have stock recovery on my s4 and I am not sure on how to flash a custom recovery or which one I should use. Apologies if this is the wrong thread and thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,
Look HERE
Choose one of the 4 recoveries available .
Installation instructions are on the thread.
as far as i know there are currently 3 custom recoverys available.
im using philz touch recovery.
download newest version as .tar.md5, put it in odin as pda, and flash it just like you did with the pre rooted rom.

I have an overseas rom for i9505 that I really want to use on my I337 (AT&T). However it does not come with any custom rom beside those 1.7GB .md5 stock roms. I have tried using CASUAL Root and Recovery to install TWRP, but I got stuck at how I should install the rom that I have. From my experience I should have a flashable zip on my hand. I then look at Kitchen and Loki but I am totally confused about it. Can anyone point me to the right direction about how what to do with the i9505 rom that I wish to install? Thanks.

Follow the instructions in this link. If it seems to foreign to you, stop and don;t attempt to flash anything until you have a clear understanding. Several people in this forum have put together threads intended to help.

I know that thread. It seems like the prerequisite is to have a custom rom. In my case I don't have a custom rom that's why I got stuck here...

There is no prerequisite to have a custom rom already installed. You need to be rooted with a custom recovery. You flash the rom in recovery. Twrp and cwm are recoveries.

No I am not talking about a "custom rom already installed". What I mean is, the rom needs to be CWM flashable, which is a ZIP file containing Meta-INF, which is also a "custom rom". However, the only file I have access is MD5 file which is an ODIN file. I think I can't flash the ODIN file in TWRP, right?
no locked bootloader will check security of the md5, however ...in your case you can get a linux and un tar the md5... make a flashable..patch with loki..and flash

I have installed Ubuntu (does it work??) through VM...Move the files (I9505ZHUAME3 and Loki_mater) to Ubuntu, then I am lost...Any very detailed tutorial anywhere?
I have recently rooted my S4 and would like to flash Paranoid Android but am currently stuck trying to figure out which recovery to you. My last phone was a Droid X2 where the options were very limited for basically everything, as it has a very locked bootloader, which made things easy. What would be the most stable recovery to use? How should I flash it (Odin or otherwise)?

TWRP works great, and you can flash it using the Goo Manager app in the Play Store.

Goomanager. Menu...install. done.

I had terrible luck with Goo. I use Philz Touch for recovery & never had an issue, yet
Thanks guys. I'll give goomanager a try and if that doesn't work I'll switch to Philz. @P1NK13P13 how would I flash that? Would I just use ROM Manager?

Personally, I used Odin to install. It was super easy & fast. I'd type it out, but I'm at work. Here's everything you need to know:
How to install: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39433857&postcount=4
Link to entire Philz Touch recovery thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201860
Thanks. I was looking at the thread in the development section and didn't notice the link to the instructions.

You can keep stock kernel and have philz touch recovery, that's what I have done previously. I have noticed a lot of custom recovers are a little buggy still tho still early days for gs4 so I'm still using stock recovery as I use an app called mobile odin and keep my stock firmware on the phone so I can flash anytime
Hi
I'm trying to install back stock kernel and recovery to get update thorough the phone for new MG1 update, and i'm can't find stock recovery.
You can use CF-root to install stock recovery and stock kernel. Or you can download a stock firmware file from Sammobile and grab the recovery.img from the .tar.
But this is a Q thread so please ask these kind of questions at 'Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting' next time!

Hi Here is a link of the complete ROM
http://live.samsung-updates.com/details/11057/Galaxy_S_4_Exynos_Octa/GT-I9500/SER/I9500XXUBMF8.html
I know this is serbian region but that part of ROM isn't region dependent.
Exract the zip and the inlcuded tar.
Inside the tar is a file: recovery.img
Regards
Hi all. I just wanted to check the best way to root. Do I download and flash through odin one of the pre rooted rooms then Flash custom recovery or can I Flash the recovery in odin and then install a pre rooted rom in zip form?

Easiest way is to just flash pre rooted rom in odin.
However, I flashed custom recovery then flashed supersu zip...
Whichever suits you...

Thanks. I was going to download the deoxed one in the development thread, my baseband is my and build is m17. Is that still on to flash that one?
Been doing a lot of reading but still not sure about all this locked bootloader and stuff
Remember easiest isn't always best custom recovery gives u more options but pre rooted ROM is good
