Officially the "S5 prime" isn't a S5 model at all. according to Samsung at least. We all know it is a derivative model though. No dedicated subform here. As the phone has now been designated an Asian market only phone, pretty much everything is in Chinese or Korean. There is a thread dedicted to the prime here (just do simple search for it) that tabulates what is available for the model. The last I looked it was just rooting methods plus a few semi-custom Chinese ROMs.
As a niche model limited to China and Korea; and with it's own firmware path and incompatible drivers we probably won't see a wealth of custom ROMs for it. More likely you will see a 900H type path with very little development simply because most developers won't own the variant.
.
oic... this variant specs is pretty awesome though.. the galaxy s5 should have had these specs in the first place!

Agreed. But Samsung took the safe, conservative way out and didn't break much real new ground with the S5. They just refined the S4 and added more apps. More to the point, amongst all the rumours of a S5 Prime model, Samsung blatantly lied and told us categorically that there would be no forthcoming S5 prime model, to boost initial S5 sales. They didn't want people holding off in wait for the Prime version.
That created a lot of anger and outrage when the deception was revealed. And a lot of us suspect that the S5 Prime was originally planned for wide release, but to save face was subsequently designated as an Asian market only handset. At the very least, it was criminal that Samsung released the original S5 with a 16 GB ROM in NA and less RAM than the existing N3. Criminal because the S5 was supposedly the flagship device, but the marketing people new thought that they could get away with the inferior specs.
.
And as another nail in the coffin of the so called S5 Prime gaining wider distribution.. Samsung just announced (earlier today) a Note 3.5 model. If you look at the specs, it's really the S5 Prime with a 5.6" screen positioned as an intermediate Note model.
Obviously a face saving move allowing them to continue the charade that the S5 Prime was never intended for worldwide sales. The new model is being called the Note Edge and makes it even less likely that you will see many custom ROMs for the "S5 Prime".

The note 4 has the same specs as the G906 (S5 "Prime", which is a Korea only model)... So maybe other than the S Pen it'll have similar hardware.... But who knows till we see a ROM!
Besides that Miscom has made a custom ROM for it (G906), just with root and a bit of de-bloating. It is super fast on it, so I'm not sure what you want from a custom rom.

Please explain how the S5 "Prime" is gaining wider distribution.
The Note edge is more than just a 5.6 inch S5 Prime. Have you seen it's defining software features? With what you're saying, this applies to the G3, M8, Find 7, Z2 and Z3 and pretty much most of the flagship devices coming out this year. The Note Edge and Note 4 are completely different devices to the Note 3 and S5 Prime, unless of course you are just looking at what brand chipset it has and how it has the iconic Galaxy design.

I wouldn't call it a Prime model, I would call it a region specific model. Aren't those two exclusive to South Korea and parts of Europe?
do you guys any chinese/korean forums where there are custom roms for the samsung galaxt s5 prime? I can get a prime for almost the same price as the galaxy s5 .. but I am hesitating because of the lack of roms

Yesterday, Samsung U.S. confirmed that 14 devices will soon be making the switch to Android 4.4 KitKat. However, there was no mention of when international models would be receiving the KitKat update. Fret not users, as we now have confirmation as to which international models will be getting the Android 4.4 KitKat update. The list is Samsung Poland’s official KitKat update list that was obtained today by Polish blogger Robert Nawrowski. It is to be noted that not all models listed below would be making the switch to KitKat right away. They will move to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, and eventually receive Android 4.4 KitKat.
Here are the international models that will be making the switch to Android 4.4 KitKat:
Galaxy Note 3
Galaxy Note 2
Galaxy S4
Galaxy S4 Active
Galaxy S4 Zoom
Galaxy Mega 6.3
Galaxy Mega 5.8
Galaxy Grand
Galaxy Express
Galaxy Note 8.0
Galaxy Note 10.1
Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition
Galaxy Tab 3 7.0
Galaxy Tab 3 8.0
Galaxy Tab 3 10.1
The list is identical to the list of models detailed by Samsung U.S., although unlike the U.S. list, it isn’t clear as to when these mobiles will receive the OTA update. Most devices launched last year are included in the list, with a few notable exclusions like the Galaxy Core. It is interesting to see that the Galaxy S3 won’t be making the switch to Android 4.4 KitKat, but considering that it is now close to two years since its official launch, we won’t blame Samsung for giving the S3 a miss.

Hi,
I'm currently still on the Galaxy S4 i9505, running a ported GPE firmware.
Sadly, Samsung never came through with the Galaxy S5 GPE, so I'll have to make a difficult decision for my next Smartphone.
I was hoping for the new Nexus, but it's just too large for my taste. The Moto X 2014 is a great phone, but the small battery and less than perfect camera are making me a bit reluctant to buy it. Sony Xperia Z3 is a good device, but they have never been the fastest updaters. Also, the Camera on the latest Sony phones is not so great, the sensor might be OK, but Sony kills details with their over-aggressive noise cancelling tech.
So, that leaves me with the "old" Nexus 5 (old processor, small battery and mid-range camera) or one of the Galaxy S5 models.
Now here's my problem: I could get the Galaxy S5 SM-900F, or the S5+ SM-901F. The 901F is the obvious choice, because it comes with the newer Snapdragon 805 SoC. However, I'm not planning on using Touchwiz for more than 5 Minutes, so I need a phone with good CM/ASOP support. I'm a bit scared, that the S5+ will be a "niche" product and won't get many devs. Since Google Play Edition probably won't be happening for the S5 in any of it's shapes, that's my only chance.
Now, what do all of you think?
Do I have a chance with either of the S5 models or should I rather comprmised and go with the Moto X 2014 since that has a clean android interface and will get updated at about the same time as the GPE devices? Might there still be a GPE Galaxy S5? Will Samsung eventually relent and slim down Lollipop and tighten their Update schedule? Rumours point at a 2014 release of Android 5 on the S5 and Note 4, but does that include the new S5+?
Thanks for your ideas!
Get the 901F, I have it for about a month and it's the best phone I have ever used you won't be disappointed
Thanks. I'm not worried about the phone performance, but about dev supporz, from Samsung and from XDA...
Has this been rooted, debloated and/or Cyanogenmodified yet?
Plus is a wasted space tbh. G900F is the way to go in term of develompent. Roms. Programs and so on.

From Samsung, no worry, it will come as for others products.
From devs support here on xda, there's nothing yet:
- root is ok (see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/help/sm-g901f-to-s5-how-to-root-t2882104)
- custom recovery not properly yet (only one chinese version here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55667472&postcount=175)
but it does not support aroma interface
- custom ROM does not exists yet
If you only want custom ROM with S5, choose G900* model but product is not as good as G901F.
If not, best product is G901F but need to wait for Devs.
Best regards
Franky

bear in mind
once you flash cyanogen or anything not touchwiz based. you losed camera functionality. 120fps slow mo and 4k will not be in cyanofgen as the samsung camera app is based on the touchwoiz framework
I can live with losing slow motion and 4k. What I really need is HDR in Google Camera. This is a problem on the S4...do you know how the S5 does here?
I really y hate Samsung for dropping GPE devices, and Google for not making an updated Nexus 5...?

HDR works in google camera. apparently though the quality isnt as good as stock as per usual
well thats what ive heard anyway
personally id rather wait until the camera CM provides can match the stock in terms of modes. or google camera can use extra modes

Well, I'll wait a bit longer, tilp the official Lollipop rollout begins, maybe there will be some surprises. After all, there is that picture of the S5 running stock Android on www.android.com which might mean there is a GPE phone coming...

why do devs never buy plus versions? also why cant they dev for phones they dont own?
The problem is some of us dont have a choice, EE is by far best provider in uk and they no longer supply 900f, much of europs is also exclusivy 901f now.
at&t sprint etc. got own section on site but not 901f.
Hi all..
As you may be able to tell I'm new here. After looking around the Note 4 area of the forums, I've noticed that it is full of Custom ROMs and Kernels, which is great as I'm planning on buying one in a couple of months. What I haven't seen, however, is a whole lot of Dev support for the Galaxy S5 G901F, my current phone. This is baffling me somewhat, as the phones are almost identical inside minus the 3GB RAM of the Note. What is even more odd is that after comparing my G901F to two Note 4 Snapdragons in work today, I noticed that my G901F gave them both a kicking in Antutu Benchmark (50300 for G901F, 47900 for Note 4).
With such similarities between the G901F and the Note 4 Snapdragon, why is it that the Note 4 is being so fully supported by Devs? I thought I'd post it in the Note 4 section as this is theoretically where anyone with the knowledge to answer that will reside.
This wasn't intended as a question but it seems I ticked the box. Could a mod fix it? Cheers.
Hope someone can help

That's exactly it. Devs only tend to support a phone they own. If there's not many people own your device then there is little support. A lot of note 3 owners were complaining that the eteam released dn4 for the note 2 and not the n3 saying it was an outdated device. The simple answer is none of the eteam owned a note3

Hi,
Samsung Galaxy S5 is officially dead now? I mean software side. Where is the S5's Official Nougat update?
Samsung Galaxy S5 released 2014 April and it took last big update in 2016 March. 1 year 11 month official OS update support time.
Competitor's introduced phone at the same time still receiving OS updates.
Samsung Galaxy S5 users dont you feel worthless?
If samsung did this to me I would never buy Samsung again. Because I know the value of my money. Samsung just force you to replace your phone due to lack of updates. It's a cheap trick for a make profit.
Samsung Galaxy S6 will probably also stay on Android 7.0
Samsung Galaxy S7 will probably also stay on Android 8.0
Samsung Galaxy S8 will probably also stay on Android 9.0
Samsung Galaxy S series users what do you think about that?
Its not a good strategy for a create loyal buyers. That strategy creates own haters.

rooted, twrp'd and ROM'd, dont feel worthless at all as i havent got OTA's since the 4th day of owning this device, and that was 3 years ago
that and the problem with the S5 is that that there are over a dozen version of it and they all have their own specific quirks that Samsung would have to allow for
Why the hate? And why ask that question on xda? xda users don't tend to rely on 'official' updates anyway. I rooted my S5, used CWM and flashed CM12 (or whatever it was then) the second day I owned my S5. I now have Lineage 14.1, SIM unlocked 32gb µSD card, it is working like a pro! I don't plan to get a newer phone anytime soon.

Hi Guys In This Thread We Will Talk About The Official Oreo Update For Note 5
Any one knows any new news
Kindly post it :good:
https://www.sammobile.com/samsung-galaxy-android-8-o-update
The weird thing For Now That They Put the Galaxy s6 in (These Galaxys may or may not get Android 8.0) category
And You can see in gsm arena they that galaxy s6 is planned To be Upgraded .
But They put The note 5 in (These Galaxys will not get Android 8.0) category
And If you asked me why I’m talking too much about galaxy s6 and the connection between it and the note 5 i find the answer pretty obvious ,
actually if you compare the hardware between them you will find that they have the same Chipset and the same CPU and the same GPU !!!!!
So You Can Say It’s Not A Hardware issue .
If oreo will not come to note5 and came for s6e then the devs will port it for note5

I hope , but it will be a stupid move from Samsung
Accordoing to me , Samsung won't give Oreo to Galaxy S6. Because it have taken two major upgrades.
We can only wait for Galaxy A8 (2016). But on the other hand, it's not a flagship device. So, maybe Samsung will give Oreo to Galaxy A8 (2016).
There is no hope for me.
It's a joke not to update at least the s6 and note 5.
Especually since people went two years nearly with the note 4 and 5 being the only notes. And Samsung didn't give either of them justified updates making up for that fact.
Its not Samsung though. Sadly all companies are like this. Google is pretty much no better. And the only ones that give any more have weak uis in comparison.
And anyone claiming about i phones getting updates is clearly too niave to speak on the matter
Note 5/S6 Edge will receive at least 7.1.1. For Example Note 4 start with 4.4.4 and received 5.0.1>5.1.1>6.0.1=3 updates. Note 5 start 5.1.1 and receive 6.0>7.0=2. Next between android 7.0 and 8.0 are not much changes. So why no called 7.5? Maybe merketing and full of numers are reserved only for the newest devices.
This is why I'll never get a Samsung phone ever again. They are only supported for 2 Android versions, the software sucks, lack of support for Exynos cpu.
I've been impressed with the Xiaomi's I've used. The screens are not as good as Samsung. But even Samsung's screens are not good compared to LG.
