No option to enable ART on S5 g906k Prime - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've enabled developer options from tapping the build number however there's no option to enable the ART runtime. Any clue in why the Korean version doesn't have this and how I can enable it via a different approach?
Thanks.

It is libdvm.so.
Unfortunately it seems that ART isn't an option. But, given that there isn't an option, that suggests that some part of the code simply doesn't work with ART. Only samsung knows what!

Exactly my point. Presumably some parts of the Samsung software aren't compatible with ART for this CPU/GPU. And hence why the option isn't there. Of course, I might take a backup at some point as try it, but not yet.

So, when Android L comes out will it not be able to work with ART?

fffft said:
You're jumping to an unfounded conclusion. It's possible that is the case, but there is no evidence to support it yet.
In fact, it would be highly unlikely that the core system apps would be incompatible with ART given that Samsung would know Google's plans to make ART the primary cache method in Android L. Nevertheless, many non system apps are known to be incompatible at this time.

Maybe. But why didn't Samsung include the option for just this model then? Seems very odd. Maybe Koreans don't like ART?
[edit - Actually, what is more likely is some carrier installed bloat is probably not compatible... Hence removing the option was probably easier for them??]

Call to Arms! - Root detection

There is a big problem on the horizon.....
Lovefilm and Sky Go on my iPad have stopped working due to my jailbreak...
Turns out Sky Go doesnt work on Rooted Android either!
As much as i hate Sky as a company we dont have much choice in the UK if you want some decent channels on TV. I dont even use their app that much but this trend seems to be catching on...
More and more apps are refusing to run on Jailbroken iOS and the same will be happening on Android soon enough. They are also actively patching any work arounds or hacks to stop people running apps on Rooted or JB devices.
i really hope some of the talented people who code for android can find a good solution to this problem or even better Google comes out and tells the world that Rooters should not lose out like this.
If we can make it so much work for them to keep fixing the holes then maybe they will get fed up with trying to patch them.
Because if we dont then more and more apps will follow!

There are some apps out there that will temp unroot your phone so apps like that will work. then you just restore it(OTA rootkeeper allows this). Also I think Siyah kernel supports temp unrooting

Siyah kernel does support temp unrooting, but somehow Sky Go still knows your phone is rooted, and it won't work. So far from the reading I have done there is no solution to this other than to flash back to a stock unrooted firmware.
I don't think it will become the rule on android, because there are to many apps that even need root, but at ios, probably because jailbreak is the only possibility to get, at least partially, out of their ecosystem.

[HOW TO] Barclays Mobile Banking working on rooted S3
As far as I know. Sky Go has gotten around everything so far.
I see not to far in the future a situation where you have to either root and lose lots of apps you use or lose the root lose lots of apps you use.
That's a crap situation for sure

Sky have invested a heck of a lot of time and money to making the latest Sky Go apps very very hard to hack!
They now do a lot of checking on their severs which makes it impossible for us to hack around.
I am sorry but I don't think we will ever get sky go working properly with root, and as soon as we did sky would update the app to fix the loophole.
Google won't do anything because rooted android isn't standard android. The android platform isn't built like windows or OS X, where the default is the user having root available.
Therefore security (DRM in particular) on those platforms is built with that in mind. Android isn't.
Also, while you might have the best of intentions there are plenty of root-users who would use it to copy content offline, trick it into thinking you have a subscription whe you don't etc.

This sux for sure.
On iPad they sandboxed the app in its own virtual environment. could this trick it into think its running on unrooted firmware?
I can't see how there is no way around this. If the app tests root, deny it, if it scans for root binaries, change/rename them. What am I missing here? Is there some other level of detection somewhere?

You cant get the content without a subscription anyway, the problem has been people UDID spoofing and getting more active devices than they are allowed. Its a joke that they limit this anyway they should just make it so you can only be logged in on 2 devices at any one time using traditional methods like IP address and IMEI

The Sky Go app is a bastard
This is a list of some of the things it checks (but not all)
- Root binaries
- Root App
- Phone model
- Android version
- Custom Recovery
- Custom Kernels
- IMEI checks (stops wifi-only tablets..)
The first 4 are simple to overcome, the last three cause major issues!

the Apple skygo app works differently, it doesn't check for IMEI.
wifi-only android tablets do not have IMEI numbers so it will always fail this check

Thats the thing, we (me and two others who worked on hacking this app) couldn't work it out! But it definitely was detecting it, we tried it on Samsung and HTC devices with no root and stock kernel but with a custom recovery and sky go stopped worked, change back to stock recovery and the app works again but we could not find any code that checked it.
On most devices to get it to work you need a stock based rom, stock recovery (unless recovery is part of kernel like S2) stock based kernel (ro.secure=1 must be set!) no or hidden root. You then need to make sure you fit the device or version checks, if you don't you need a hacked app that allows you to do this.
However the latest sky go apps do a sever side check for the apps signature (so you cannot decompile and recompile without changing this). So basically we can no longer do even the most basic of hacks.

A small question about ART regarding updates

I've been hearing a lot about ART in threads and stuff.So I finally decided to search what this ART thing is. After knowing what ART I am very happy that finally in very near future (or maybe now) android phones will have smooth UI and Apps like iPhone.
Anyways cutting the crap out, I am using Galaxy Note 2 (N71000) running the latest Nightly by Omni. I have enabled ART on my phone just now and i can really see a notable difference . As I was activating ART I found that it is not officially supported by Omni. So a question strikes my mind
"Do I need to shift back to Dalvik from ART to install latest updates or can I flash them normally?"
I searched but couldn't find an existing thread.
Thanks
You can flash any update as normal, the only thing is depending on how many apps you have it will take a lot longer to optimise them on the first boot compared to dalvik. It's a worthy trade-off but can be an inconvenience when it takes 10-20 minutes for roughly 200 apps.

Sounds like you're a little new with ART. I'm not saying you're complaining (because you're not), but bear in mind ART is experimental and may or may not continue to work, or even be included by Google in the future. So remember, if it it quits working...

Stop mailing <insert app developer here> asking them to fix their app when using ART. You need to stop using ART until it is fixed. It is experimental for a reason.

Haha yes I am very very aware that ART is experimental and I am not worried if some apps stop working. And I hope that in future Google improves ART and implements it as the main runtime because the concept of ART is very appealing.

[Q] Disable fast dormancy on the S5?

I need to be able to disable fast dormancy on the S5. The Bahamian phone system, AFAIK, doesn't support FD. At least not during 2012/13. I asked a friend living, in Abaco, who's very knowledgeable on the subject. He's unaware of any changes on this front.
I found a reference to a hack for the S3, but I don't know if it works with the S5. Or if rooting is needed to (e.g., to hack build.prop).
Anybody got information on this issue?

Thanks! As far as I can tell, the app is working. Until I connect with a carrier that doesn't support FD, I won't know for sure. Unless there's a way to verify it's working on my S5 while I'm still in the States. I can, of course, inspect the file and see the changes applied. The question is whether or not it's valid for this phone and OS rev. Ideas?

[MOD] request: Screen-Off Memo feature port to Note 4?

Hi
I think it would be great if the Note 4 could inherit the Screen-Off Memo feature of the Note 5...
(not sure but maybe this equals a port of the whole Air Command)
Thanks A LOT in advance

I totally agree, is this a real possibility for the note 4?
Surly at some point Note 5 Rom will be ported to Note 4. or maybe Xposed module one day. We need some skilled Dev to take up this project.
That'll be super good & useful.... not to mention up the value of note 4 !

I would easily donate 50 Euros to dev who will port it across, maybe more depending on quality of the port.
This would not be an easy port, to be honest.
From the video's I've seen the offscreen write feature bypasses the lock without giving the user access to the system. My best guess is that it's integrated into the lock sceens on the N5. We'd have to download them and try.

I have been checking the codes.
Pls note that there is a separate AirCommandService.apk file in the system/app folder in Note5. This Service is the one that possibly scans the intents when the S Pen is removed and triggers the "BlackMemo" I can find the codes for it as shown in the attachment below.
There would be lot of work to be done as there are codes for the airbutton in the framework.jar files and a few other files and the settings part of spen also needs to be ported as there are codes to check if it is enabled in settings and comparision with Note 4 files show that they are quite different. May be best is to wait for the 5.1.1 release for Note 4 and then try porting this.

I guess the 64 Bit/32 Bit would be in the Libs/Kernel. If any apks explicitly reference these 64 bit libs then, yes there might be an issue porting them. But I am not too sure if any of these core spen applications reference the 64 bit libs or not.

From your screenshot, I think we can assume that blackmemo is an app, but its an app that is integrated into the core spen feature. I agree with you that nearly the entire spen framework would have to be ported. Depending on the lib requirements, this may or may not be possible.

The below are the intents that the AirCommandService.apk will register and here you can see that the intent for Black_Memo is getting registered to be received. ("com.sec.android.intent.action.BLACK_MEMO")
private void registerBroadcastReceiver()
{
IntentFilter localIntentFilter = new IntentFilter();
localIntentFilter.addAction("android.intent.action.SCREEN_ON");
localIntentFilter.addAction("android.intent.action.SCREEN_OFF");
localIntentFilter.addAction("android.intent.action.CLOSE_SYSTEM_DIALOGS");
localIntentFilter.addAction("android.intent.action.USER_PRESENT");
localIntentFilter.addAction("android.intent.action.DREAMING_STARTED");
localIntentFilter.addAction("com.sec.android.automotive.drivelink.carmodechanged");
localIntentFilter.addAction("com.sec.android.intent.action.BLACK_MEMO");
localIntentFilter.setPriority(999);
this.mContext.registerReceiver(this.mBroadCastReceiver, localIntentFilter);
}
So if we even get this service file functional on note 4 , we can perhaps trigger and test the intent using terminal command (am start -a "intent details")
Let us hope some one cracks this soon

At the moment the app doesn't work with the stock 5.1.1 rom. Someone people have gotten it to work on 5.0.1 builds by editing their build.prop. It also doesn't work if you have a security lock.

The exynos variant of the note 4 has 64-bit capabilities, whereas the snapdragon variant doesn't. So it won' be difficult to port screen off memo and scroll capture to the exynos variant. Scroll capture feature contains 64-bit libs, but not sure about the screenoff memo feature.

Yes; even without phone fuctions is ok for start. I see note 4 exynos got decent cm13 now; I hope no impossible to give it for tab s2 lte. Would be great
Hey, I'm new to this, but I want to give it a shot to try a port for the T715.
I think it should be no problem to make a build without modem support.
So my plan would be to use the source of the T710, if @CTXz allows me to use his sources.
Next I want to try to integrate the modem/ RIL sources, but don't expect too much! I'm completely new to android development and this will be my first project doing myself.
Just did some compilings and ports, but never to new unsupported devices. Maybe with some help it will be possible for me.

That is a very tuff question to answer in just one post and depends on particular preferences. My advise is to Google: Cyanogenmod and TouchWiz.

It seems the main issue is battery and camera (quality).
i think i messed my t817v. i rooted using odin, and cannot figure out what to do next. it tries to install but gives error message, also my tab wont charge, and when hooked into odin it keeps "adding then removed" over and over again... now i have a tablet that does not work.
any help on this would be awesome.

I would love that!
I also posted a device request at the CyanogenMod Forum.
What you always lose with CM is Bluetooth aptX support for higher quality Bluetooth audio, since they have no licence. And since now there is official MM for the S2 and it - with enough free storage and 3 GM of RAM and root available - really doesn't profit any more from a "slim" ROM than earlier devices did, can anybody point me to a real advantage of CM?
For me CM was never about storage, but about control. As far as possible (for I am no programmer) I want to decide about the rights apps have and don't. It starts with being able to delete them and goes on with being able to restrict their access rights. As far as I remember such privacy guard things are much more easier to accomplish with CM.

But stock MM offers these permission settings now, so what else?

My TAB s2 is my first Samsung device.... ( other android devices being nexus 7, xperia z2 / z3, moto g 4G ) ...... I love the tablet but I must say the draw of a supported CM ROM would be the look / feel of stock android and the way the system behaves. Whilst with a rooted device you can remove bloatware, the system itself does not change. All of my other devices have been stock or only lightly skinned....and basically stock once you swap out the launcher.... so I have come to like that. I do find touchwiz to be a little in my face and I do notice the system intrusions a little...... a personal thing of course and I am not complaining as I made the decision to buy it knowing full well what Touchwiz was... but the hardware in the tablet and the price was the draw-card (got the WiFi version here in Aus the first month on sale for $540 ... in comparison, the Nexus 9 was circa $700 and the Ipad Air 2 64gb was $730). My nexus 7 2013 runs MM with less and smoother than the TAB s2 runs LP. I could only imagine what it could do with an ASOP ROM once the bugs were fixed.
Could it be due to a defect usb-port?

A question:
What does one gain and lose by going from stock Samsung to CM12/13?
Thanks!

Do u know the difference between WIndows Phone/iPhone and Android, that's the kind of comparison u can use between Stock and CM.
Stock is the cute "little" thing with mostly everything that u may need ready to go.
CM is the smaller in size, much faster and with options to do almost anything u could think in a device.

Was this ever fixed?
Why does the SM-T815 run in 32bit mode, even under CM13?
