Google Backup vs Samsung Backup - Galaxy Tab 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am setting up by Tab 4 7.0 for first time and when logged in with my Google account it asked if I wanted to backup and restore and then when I logged in to my Samsung account it asked me the same thing. Is enabling both redundant and screw things up? Which should I do , Google, Samsung or both?

I use Google backup. Whenever you want a new tablet from another brand, Samsung backup doesn't do anything for you. However, when I did set up Google backup, it downloaded automatically all apps I have on my phone.

I use TiBU but since you dont have root maybe this will work for you.
Everyone has trouble when they back up fingerprint settings, just fyi. Personally I root and use titanium backup like the gentleman above. The paid version is the most expensive app I've purchased and worth every penny ^_^ the free version is great as well and since you're probably not the type that needs it over and over, free would do just fine for ya. Hope it helps

Not that this will help the OP's situation, but Motorola should add full online backup capability to your MotoBlur account. That would make MotoBlur something other than the useless POS it is now.

You can use DropBox to store your backups online if you like. Follow that link for extra storage. Here's the Android app for after you sign up: http://goo.gl/EeaT2

NFC and Viruses?

I got my Nexus 4 today and I love it. I have a couple of concerns though - virus wise.
On my previous phone, which was an Android, I was sent a link with some dodgy stuff on. I cleared my history and thought nothing of it. Because I was getting a new phone, I emailed myself all my contacts as a vCard. When my Nexus 4 arrived, I logged into that using the email/Google Play account that was linked to my old phone, but didn't download the vCard. I then got a bit concerned about whether the dodgy site on the previous phone could have infected my email account, so I deleted all my emails from that account, did a factory reset on my old phone so my Google account wasn't linked to that phone, then did a factory reset on my Nexus 4 and started afresh.
From that 'procedure', are both my Nexus 4 and email/Google Play account safe/clean etc.?
Also, my brother has a Nexus 7. I wanted to compare the screens so had them next to each other, my Nexus 4 and his 7. I didn't touch them back to back, though I did test out NFC transfer using my my Mum's S3 and my brothers Nexus 7, just sending pics across.
I then stumbled upon his history, and him being a teenager had been on some pretty wild sites, if you catch my drift. I don't know if they were safe, but worse case scenario, could anything bad have transferred to my Mum's phone via NFC? Or could anything have been sent to mine when they were next to each other having their screens compared? I'm not sure how NFC works, you see.
Basically, is my Nexus 4 clean or viruses or anything like that, and is my Mum's?
Many thanks.

If you're that worried, which you shouldn't be, run a virus scan.
Tell your brother that next time he wants to look up midget orphan gapers in stockings, don't.

Haha! I'll make sure he's told.
I've ran a virus scan using avast! and everything has come back clean, but from what I've asked is there ANY way at all my Nexus 4 could be infected, or not? How about my email account being infected? Could anything have transferred by NFC?
Still new to all this!

No. and assuming you didn't click the link with dodgy stuff, it wouldn't have been infected to begin with.

Android uses the Linux kernel which is very hard to get viruses. Since you did a virus scan amend it came back fine, I don't think you have any.
About the sites if your worried if any transferred using NFC just erase the the browsing history.
Well I clicked the link on the original phone before I realised what it was. Hence me wondering whether my email account that was linked to the phone could be infected with anything. And am just bothered by what can be transferred by NFC, i.e. what was on my bro's device.
So, you all think my Nexus 4 is clean, no need for a new Google account/factory reset or anything?
You're fine. Lol.
If you didn't put in your email information there is no way for your email to be "infected".

Guess I misunderstood the situation. You installed it obviously and forgot the password?
Anyway, delete the app. Or try erasing the app data.
That's just standard steps...I haven't used net nanny.
If nothing works, you may even need to reflash your rom or firmware. Clean flash...wiping everything, except your internal sd.
Or maybe a Google search may yeild smarter advice than mine.

Yeah I just did a factory reset. It is a battle between ex-wife and myself. I buy my son a tablet and she installs that on there basically making the tablet useless for my son. SO now the tablet stays in my house for him to use.
Thanks!

If you install app protector and protect the play store you need a password to install/uninstall apps your ex wife would then be unable to install apps or access the play store without the password your son would also need it to install apps but he can just ask you.

If you have root, just install Titanium Backup from the Play Store (which you should already have because it is awesome) and force remove the app. It will even pull off Bloatware, so I am sure Net Nanny is no obstacle.

Apps like net nanny require the password to uninstall and even titanium backup will ask you for the password. Bloatware is different they are apps written to the system partition making them non removable without access to said partiton.

All third party, user installed apps (installed from Google Playstore or side-loaded) can be temporarily suspended by booting the device into SAFE MODE.
For details, see here...
https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/2852139?hl=en
...leaving just the core Android SYSTEM apps running and available.
Any problematic user installed app(s) can then be simply uninstalled.

[Q] Dropbox promotion lost??

Hi,
When i received my new S5 (SM-G900F), i did the following in this order:
-CF-autoroot install
-TWRP 2.7.0.0 install
-titanium backup install
-Restored my apps (user apps ) from my S3 (I9300) Omnirom backup to my S5
Since that in the bunch I had dropbox, it seems that I have disrupted something because the promotions (50GB for 2 years) is not triggered:crying:
So I can access my files in dropbox but when I check my account, Dropbox doesn't mention my S5 space upgrade...
Did I blew my chance to get that free space??
Is it a way to repare that??
Thanks !!!
Did you already used samsung Dropbox deal on other device? If so, it's only once per account.

Yes, I used my dropbox account with samsung S3 promotion 2 years ago...
The promotions will end in a few days...
On dropbox site they say:
The first Dropbox account that signs in to the app on the device will get 48 GB of free space (assuming the other conditions are met). Each account is only able to claim this promotion once.

Now I wonder, is promotion from samsung s3 and samsung s5 different or not?
I mean, when my s3 promotions is over , will the S5's one take over or am i out it for good???
The only way to get it, is to create a new Dropbox account I think.
You could try resetting to factory settings then trying dropbox to get the promotion then restore your titanium backup. Or if you did a nandroid backup of stock once you installed TWRP try restoring that, then try dropbox, once it's registered on your dropbox account restore your titanium backup.
This sounds like a con. Nowhere on any of Samsung's promotion does it say of you had a previous promotion you won't get this one for your S5. This needs reporting.
This also happened to me. After s4, s4 active, note 3 and now s5 none of them has bring me another 50 go. It's very very stupid. At least our time should be extended to another 2 years, I don't really need 150 or 200 go but the time is running away... what we should do?

i mean i understand they can't "stack" it...but at the very least..they should reset your 2 year expiratoin date from the last device using the promotion
Of I rememer right, I got from s2 and note 102 gb of space. By now 50 gb has gone....at least the time period should be extended.

I tried factory reset but it didn't change a thing...
As suggested, create a new account is the way to go..
I do think the time should be extended at least ( also, I was wondering why Samsung is not making more noise about it, like they brag alot on linkedin or wallstreet journal but not on dropbox).
Anyway, one word, disappointing...

[REQ]Samsung cloud appdata restore video

I have the verizon model of the s8 so i am unable to use samsung cloud(Thanks Verizon you jerks). I was wondering if someone would be willing to make a video showing samsung cloud restoring and app with appdata.
I found this feature still is available in my secure folder however it does not store appdata and am yet to see proof that it actually works with appdata.
Does samsung cloud really able to replace the need for titanium backup? How the F is this not built into android already. sigh....
