[Q] Xposed, does it work? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I just wanted to find out whether xposed works properly on the galaxy S5? The reason why I want it is to block the in game ads, I wouldbt mind them if they were a bit smaller but the game becomes unplayable with the size of some of the ads! I read somewhere that it can softbrick your phone, is that true? If is is, then I think I'll leave it :silly:

Never found a report like soft brick by using xposed.
But found so many reports about crashing with S-health & private mode by using xposed.
I'm not a developer or a master.
Wait for answer from others.

+1...... though I find Adblock plus works best for me. (sent from a healthy s5 running exposed framework)

You shouldn't block adverts. Just pay for the full version. You're decreasing the income for talented programmers, which will make them run away from Android.

And what do we do if they don't offer a pay version and subject us to ads anyway? I'll buy an app just to get rid of ads. It's a way to get people to buy apps that works. But if they're going to force me to have an obtrusive ad bar with no way to get rid of it? Yeah, I'll block them.

Regarding KNOX there is a massive grey area around it, will Samsung carry out warranty work if it's tripped. Some report yes, some report no, some just don't know but guess.
It's all down to you really, if you feel rooting is a benefit to you then it might be worth losing OTA/Knox(warranty) etc. I rooted my Note 3 and tripped KNOX the day I got it, and tbh I never had issues.

I got a Note 10.1 2014 and I have root it. i really like to options root gives me, like frezzing app's i dont need or use and ADAway. But im not sure to root my S5 or not to.
Ask yourself if you really need root right now, if not then don't risk it, if you do then go ahead and do what you need etc.
hmm, I think the real question is about the risk versus benefits...
Thing is I refuse to share my device with my compagny, if I own the hardware then all software limits are unacceptable.period.
Now, getting root is not for all and every user, so unless you know what you do then don't go for it...
I think that since most of our digital life happen on mobile device nowadays, empowerment is mandatory.
We can't let big company decide for us, too much is at stake.
For example, I use Xposed module with Xprivacy in order to have control over what data of mine are shared with internet.
Root only brings you control, not only choices, and that's what matter!

Xposed is a framework that allow module to run at a system level WITHOUT to have to modify your rom (it's very much alike to what winterboard is to jailbreaked Iphone).
Modules are very different from added functionality to cosmetic changes.
Xprivacy is not blocking any permissions for the apps, instead you can generate random informations and choose to give it to the apps.
The apps never crash because of Xprivacy, for example, Facebook thing I live in finland (i'm located in Asia)
So you can decide app by app what you allow and what you don't.
You'll find plenty of info about these topics here on xda!

I sure miss.....

What do you miss?
Xposed... Custom recovery... Freedom... Adaway for sure... Roms... All kinds of stuff I can't think of lol.

Really though, I just miss Root in general. Can't block ads, can't freeze apps, automaiteit/tasker is crippled, on and on. It's as if everything that made Android good or customizable is now disabled. I'm really looking forward to seeing how Nexus 6 compares with the Note 4, because if I'm so locked down, I might as well use an iPhone.
It's like having a 600 horsepower engine with a speed limiter on it.

I just want to hold volume down at lock for quick flashlight ffs!
I miss a couple things, the SD card fix is one but the number one is be able to uninstall the current version of Google Maps and replace it with an older version, specifically version 6, which is immensely better IMO than their current version.

Android pay is novel and CAN make life easier, but it's not a necessity or something 90% of users will be using so I doubt root and custom roms are in any danger or extinction based on just android pay.

I personally am finding very little reason to root anymore. The only added benefit would be adblocking but I can live with it just for Android Pay. Native tethering works. System UI Tuner settings does most of the things I wanted for GravityBox.

Does imprint still work if rooted?
Personally i couldn't care less about paying with my phone when my wallet and everything I need to carry is with me regardless. Regardless of that people have gotten android pay working with rooted devices. Root, adblock / do your thing and the unroot. Add your cards and pay as you normally would. Most people don't need root 24/7 so you can have your cake and eat it too.
Don't want to root? Enjoy your ads. Or use one of the proxy services just hope they treat your data well.
Far from it, there will be plenty of XDA N6p roms to go around! Happy Flashing

Root and custom roms are not synonymous. You can have root on the stock rom on your phone and you can have a custom rom without root. For example, I have a custom rom right now without root, as I need to use apps that don't work with root, but I still want features from a custom rom.

Errm - because I haven't owned any of those devices I wasn't "in the know", so I asked the question. Jeez.
There are no custom roms. There is only Chroma.
i doubt it will die however paying with your phone has put a dent in the community as well as made android have more security because of it, plus apps like adguard, and for samsung there are disable apps that don't require root and no ads and app disabling are the only two things some people want.
Won't die. Even more so in countries like mine which refuse to support Android Pay or any other form of mobile credit payment

God no root is a massive pain.
No ad blocking, going from no ads to all ads between my 6 and 6P even XDA is bad !
Also I like to hide the nav bar to negate the burn in issues of AMOLED, don't care what anyone says these screens WILL burn in its because of the technology.
3. Tweeked stock ROMs with proper reboot options and circle battery and such
Wait for Xposed.
When Xposed is available you can install a cloak and use Pay.
I use pay on my LG G3 with Xposed and root.
Cards need to be added without Xposed installed.
To use Pay you either need to disable root or cloak it.
Not a big deal.

Sprint V20 bootloader status?

The title pretty much says it all. I'm on Sprint and I like this phone but I'm not going to get it if the bootloader is locked and/or it can't be rooted. Having ad blocking and Xposed on my phone are basic requirements for me to get one.
Would any kind soul please let me know?
I don't know, but if not anything with the bootloader would love a way to at least get a systemless root, does this sound like something that could even be possible?
It is locked as of now. Root may or may not come.
Get yourself Adguard and live happy. What do you want Xposed for?
I like root just to debloat.
I also like Titanium Backup as well
Yes. Adblocking and titbackup. Xposed would be nice though this phone needs less xposed modules for sure. I think. Lg got a lot of things right ootb.

Is this a serious question? Have you used xposed be before? The YouTube ad blocking alone is worth it. Not to mention being able to tweak literally everything on the phone and basically have a custom ROM like experience without having to flash a new ROM over the stock one. Lets say i want to change the height of my navbar and make it pink instead of black. I can do all that with xposed. If you're asking why xposed is desirable you may as well be asking why customization is needed.

I've never had stability issues with any xposed modules. My previous device was the LG G4 and I used xposed to tweak the crap out of it and it was awesome. There is a reason why xposed is so popular go look at the xposed threads. Just cause you don't feel its necessary doesn't mean it has no value to other users. This is XDA developer's for godsakes i dont think encouraging people to be content with a stock device should even be allowed on this site. But thats my humble opinion.

Hey guys, so the question is simple. Should I or should I not? At least not for a month or two.
I've had this habit of tripping knox after 1-2 months of use ever since the Galaxy S5. But now I've been missing all my purchased root apps and especially the v4a. However, what I'm worried about are those few issues poppin out after some time like what happened with the S7e. So I'm torn between rooting or not.
Any suggestions? Thanks guys.
Edit: So here are the few things you guys have shared (so far):
* Rooting doesn't void warranty: https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/...iphone-rooting-android-does-not-void-warranty
Few Alternatives for staying unrooted:
* TitaniumBackup Alt: Helium
* Adaway alt: Adhell. Also, samsung's own browser now supports extensions and you can download an adblock for it.
* v4a alt: none atm
* xposed alt: none atm
* expanded reboot menu: none
* doubletap statusbar to lock: none
Thanks:

* @LudoGris
* everybody else

I didn't have Samsung since S6 which was disaster, then I had two iphones: 6s and recently 7 respectively. Now I moved back to Samsung, as I bought S8. Personally, I find rooting useless at least for now. There aren't any major/valuable tweaks available around. Unless you really want that V4A (which is overrated in my opinion), then don't root it. I rooted my S6 after about 3 months. What I would really like to see is a stereo mod that would enable front speaker to play music.

This is a great article, I also got on different conversation before regarding this. Some are claiming that they are still able to claim their warranty after tripping knox (like the artile also said) just as long as the issue is not related to it but some says differently so I'm not confident enough with the claims. Let me try to ask the CS here in my country.

Root Explorer - The My Files App isn't that bad. Only thing you really miss is the ability to edit root folders, which what do you need that for?
Adblock - AdHell on Samsung Galaxy Store. Uses Knox to block all ads on your phone. No need for rooting for this anymore.
V4A - can't help you here
Titanium Backup - Samsung and Google do a pretty good job of backing up all my apps. Only thing I really lose is the data from the apps.
All in all I don't root anymore due to the best abilities of the phones coming with everything I have wanted. Sure, I could customize a slight bit more with a rooted phone, but the downsides of rooting - being a flashaholic, worrying about tripping hardware mines, bad ROMs, bootloop, etc. - are enough to make me stay away now. I get everything I want from the Samsung phone the way it is now.
I can't believe I just wrote that! I have been rooting for years now. What is wrong with me!!!!

True. Did you take advantage of the Disconnect offer when it was free? It works great on the S8. Blocks all ads for me.

This posts was what i've been looking for...I haven't pulled the trigger on the S8 because i'm still debating to get snapdragon or go international with exynos. My main concerns for root were adblock, titanium backup, and the lack of ability to do a nandroid backup. I've been searching for good alternatives
im under the same dilemma of whether to root or not, i have rooted all my previous phones from the s2,3,4,5,6 and the s7 edge. Now im actually considering not rooting this phone. The main things i used to root the phone for were
1) adblock - but as mentioned im going to try adhell when i get the phone
2) Titanium backup - Havent found a great alternative for this however a few people have recommend Helium
3) GameGuardian - Cant help but hack pvz2 and others when they keep asking you for money for gems/coins
4) Xposed - a)Currently using a mod for the AOD on the s7 edge which lets me set custom pictures on the phone which is amazing,
b) XtouchWiz to auto expand my audio group when pressing the volume button, havent found a replacement for this either.
But rooting would cost me the Iris scanner(need this thanks to the horrible position of the fingerprint sensor) and samsung pay(not that big a deal) and of course warranty.

I would say if you don't have to "don't root." My main reason for rooting is to get my mother language (font) on my galaxy which usually is only done by root + ifont.
I've come from a rooted Nexus 6P. I still use Power Toggles because it allows one touch location switching. I also use Lux and Llama for automation. Anyone know of good alternatives without root?

You can now set a picture of your choice on AOD - but if you mean behind the clock, that is not yet possible. Though still nice to be able to use your own photos.
Also, the volume rocker now at least lets you choose whether it controls the ringtone or media by default. I changed mine to media as I set the ringer to a specific volume and normally leave it that way, but media I change all the time.
