[Q] Random Sprint GS5 questions. - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The few questions I have are if I root my Sprint GS5 theres some things I want to know if I can do or not.
1) I wanna know that if I root my phone can I change the color of my pull-down notification center/entire settings menu or change my battery icon in the top right ir just little things like that in general.
2) Im not a big fan of Androids version of Twitter so I was wondering that if my phone was rooted would I be able to get Apple's version of Twitter on my GS5. Or if I could get keyboards that wouldnt normally be available without root access.
Any help or feedback will be appreciated, Thank you.

No. Apple IOS is a different operating system than Android, so you can't run Apple apps on a S5. See if there is an Android version of the app or look at the other Android versions to find a similar app that is to your taste.
Changing icons and colours is a lot easier. Given root, you can use Xposed framework and Wanam to make those changes. Or any number of other theming apps. You could even learn how to theme (make the changes manually) if you wish too by studying the theming tutorials in the forum.
Lots of keyboards and a lot of other stuff that you could never do on Apple as well.

Okay thank you. So you're telling me that "Xposed Framework and Wanam" will allow me to change the color of my pull down notification bar and settings, or my battery icon easily? Because I've wanted to root my phone for awhile so I can get these added benefits but I've been worried that I wont do it right and I'll somehow mess my phone up.

Look for towelroot in the Sprint GS5 forum post I provided (make sure you download the version posted in the forum by CCallahan and not directly from towelroot.com - it will not work: read in the post why) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2737724
I did it to my SM-G900P and it was the easiest method ive ever encountered with a phone so far (1 click root) Just make sure to install SuperSU after you towelroot
And yes, download Xposed Installer and search for Wanam mod in the installer's search feature. And also get XBlast Tools. Wanam is for TouchWiz - XBlast Tools are for every device. Combined, you will be able to do whatever you want.
Hope this helps! - zmag
P.S. (feel free to hit the thanks button if I did)

Nothing is risk free, including walking across a street or rooting a phone. But if you took a few minutes to read some posts in the forum, you'd quickly learn that 99% of people don't have any significant problems. If you're still worried, then don't root your phone.

Discussion: Xposed Framework & Mods

Not sure who all has seen this, but you can now fully modify your stock rom to almost anything you'd like. Per app DPI, no ascending ringer, themeing...unlimited possiblities. I wanted to create a thead for us to discuss settings and features and leave the original thread open for dev discussion.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012770
This is the link to download modifications: http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/microdownloads/
I have per app dpi working on messenger, gmail, and email at 220. For some reason I can't get tablet mode to work but I'm sure that will be fixed soon. Post any comments or questions here.
Thanks!
Does any of this works on stock 4.1.2 dll4 odexed?

Works on any rom that I've seen. I'm using it on odex 4.1.2 DLL4
Here is a link to multi-window enable all apps. I have tested and it works great on odex DLL4. Another mod we've been looking for on stock roms!

In my humble opinion Xposed Framework is the best thing that has been done for the community since the old Rom Kitchen website for the first Galaxy S.
But for some strange reason it's not getting the attention it deserves from chefs and devs
The xposed framework should work on any touchwizz based rom

I agree entirely...
The problem is that there is a difficulty level step to overcome. Once you learn how to use this though, you find it's much better than other methods.
The best thing to do right now is to encourage devs to submit their modifications into the repository linked there. This is because the files should work for future ROM versions too, but if the developer updates their patch, it's nice to get notified about the update.
I want to push this much harder in the new year as the new way to modify your phone...
I'd love to have a "no sms in call log" modification
Try "Samsung log converter" in play store
Thank you, I already use that but I'm looking for something that is a plugin for this mod.

I'm constantly telling people about Xposed framework and mods..they're so awesome.
Hmm, I never considered this but this looks cool. I've two questions though, I've read the topic of Pulsur word by word, and I guess it doesn't mess up with any system files right (sorry I didn't get all the technical words)? I am a stock forever user and I like it that way. Secondly, to use it, I just need to download the apk of Xposed framework and install it, then I need to download the mod and install it, right?
Thanks in advance.

[Q] How do you remap the hardware buttons?

I just picked up my S4 yesterday and am loving it so far (came from an ELTE). However, I would really like to map the long press of each of the 3 buttons to something else. The main things I would like to be able to access with the buttons are: voice search, in-app search and kill current app. I've searched around and haven't found much. Please let me know if there's a way to do this!
Thanks!
This isn't possible on a stock rom, but some custom roms have this ability, like Slim bean

Thank you for the reply. That's exactly what I wanted to know. I've rooted my phone, but I'm waiting until after the 14 day return period to flash a custom recovery/rom (so as to avoid any shenanigans if I decide to return it). I guess I'll have to wait until then for this functionality.
You can try one of the xposed modules. They work on stock rooted, odexed or deodexed. The latest one is available on the market called wanam xposed. Follow the instructions, you will have to download the xposed framework and install it before you run the wanum xposed. There is also nottach xposed you can find in the apps section in this forum. Not all of the features work for our phone but many do especially the new wanum xposed.

Hey dodgeboy...I came across your thread here while looking for the same solution to remap the menu key to long press kill app. I'm sort of noob on this stuff, but wondered if you can tell me exactly what you installed to make this happen? I'm on Stock Rooted, MF9, Deodexed. Hope this doesn't bug you. Thanks sir.

[Q] Privacy app for stock roms? (other than LBE?)

Hi, I just got a nexus4 and would like to keep it stock (have a sgs2 that I use for trying roms out on) but I would like to something that gives me a bit more control over how apps use my info. On my sgs2 I love openpdroid and I almost considered LBE (don't like that it doesn't allow spoofing) but seems that its been having alot of issues so that doesn't seem like a great idea. I could have sworn that I had seen one or two threads before where some devs were working on some things similar to pdroid that were also a bit simpler to install and seemed like they might install on stock roms but can't find these threads. Does anyone have any suggestions for other apps that would give a bit more control over how user info is managed? Thx in advance!

I've been meaning to check out XPosed, I keep seeing it everywhere.
I guess I have one main question related to Xposed then, for the Nexus 4, as I am trying to keep it as-stock-as-possible would the XPosed framework interfere or break the "stockness" (forgive me with the terminology) of the stock rom? That is, will it continue to update when google pushes out new updates like 4.4.3, 4.4.4, and so on? Regardless I am going to look into it for my sgs2 as I am more tolerant of tinkering but the Nexus4 is not for me and they (sig other) just wants a no-fuss phone and I want them to have a no-fuss phone with a reasonable level of privacy (always a balance )

Absolutely not, your "stockiness" will not break, as one of the main features of the xposed framework is allowing mods without flashing files and/or modifying system files. You will still receive OTAs, but to install them you'll have to uninstall The framework. (It's just a button press in the xposed app and 2 seconds of waiting) you can reinstall xposed after the OTA.

when google pushes a new update(as so called OTA or Over The Air)your phone will display the update info. however when installing it will fail since one of the files in the system is modified(the app_process in /system/bin). then you go to the Xposed app. and unninstall de framework. or use any root explorer(since u will need to have root to install xposed) and delete app_process in /system/bin and rename the app_process.bak to just app_process(in same dir).
thats what he meant.
Edit:
you will loose all configurations, sdcard contents, downloaded apps, etc.... . if u still didnt unlock your bootloader(witch looks like no),because u will need to root your phone.

You will not have any problem if youre already rooted. When an OTA comes, just Open the Xposed app and press the button to uninstall the framework. Your OTA Will work just fine.
After the OTA, just click the insatll button to re install Xposed. Really simple, really. And since youre gonna install Xposed, I suggest you try out GravityBox too, its ****ing awesome.

Well here's a tip
Go take a look at Xposed Framework. (1st hit on google leads to the topic i guess )
With this you can customize any stock rom to it's fullest extent.
Only pre-requisites are Root.
Go install a rom with Note 3 features, remove all the stuff you don't want, install the stuff you want (launchers etc).
Install Xposed Framework !
Install Wanam Xposed (from store or xposed installer) (( 4.3+ roms))
Modules i'm using:
- Advanced Reboot Menu
- All Notifications Expanded
- App Settings (set DPI per app)
- Chrome New Tab (opens up a new tab in chrome, instead of always losing the page you were on) ((when pressing a link outside chrome browser))
- Greenify ("freeze" apps, so they won't use any battery life)
- SwipeBack (just check it out)
- XuiMod (allows you to change pretty much every animation ((apps opening/closing, go to other "page" in an app, toasts etc etc)
There are lots more.

@Neal
Exactly that, you can use Xposed to modify any Rom basically :silly:

Hi.
As you know indeed, any xposed-based apps don't work.
So, all other (almost) that require root access works.
If you don't use a 5-rooted rom, You have to manually root thanks to latest chainfire's "cf-auto-root",
then install "supersu" app, and "busybox" also.
I only met problem with wakelock detector not detecting root access for the moment.
V4A, TiBu and Greenify for example work.

i am rooted at the moment with supersu and busybox. i used nexus root toolkit by WugFresh. had problems with greenify. wouldn't hibernate a lot of apps, including whatsapp, viber, etc. the basic ones. didn't even try to hibernate system ones. just the ones i use frequently. but to no avail.
p.s: what is 5-rooted rom
Xposed doesn't work currently with ART runtime which is what used on L, the developer said he may or may not be able to make it happen and if needed it may take some time. So if you want a lot of customizations you'll want to stick for 4.4 now and wait for some L custom roms to pop up.
No clue about the google apps, try uninstalling one, restarting and reinstalling and see if the behaviour changes.
Next time, questions goes in Q&A section.
