Greetings everyone!
The other day my wife's bag fell out of the car while she was exiting without either of us noticing. Inside that bag was her Nexus 7, which I promptly ran over with my car.
Much to my surprise, everything is perfectly functional as far as I can tell. Bluetooth, WiFi, Brightness settings, OTG, charging, etc... all great. The only thing I ruined was the screen of the thing.
Knowing the cost of a screen replacement, I think I'll forgo getting a new one. (I gave her one of my other N7s so this one is now a hack-device!)
My question for the fine folks of XDA is a two parter:
a) How can I safely remove the shattered screen bits without causing further damage?
b) What would be a good material to place over it once I have it removed? Glass? Some special plastic?
My idea is basically to end up with a non-touchscreen device and use OTG and ADB to maneuver around in it.
Thanks in advance!
I take it only the touchscreen glass is cracked and the LCD is OK?
If the surface of the glass is cracked but intact, just cover it with a screen protector. If the glass has shattered, you will have to carefully cut the LCD from the digitizer as the two are bonded together. Since the LCD is very thin, you might crack it.

I've experimented with a cracked screen. The lcd assembly is bonded over its whole area to the glass. The glue is softened by temperature (too hot to handle) but I was unable to separate a small piece. It's possible that heat + solvent could work but as bigbop says there is there is a massive risk in further damage

LCDs typically use a metal frame to hold everything in place. I have removed the guts of the LCD from a frame in order to make it easier to remove the frame from a digitizer on an old PDA. It may be possible to do the same with the Nexus display but you will have to remove the tape around the edges of the display away and bend the small clips holding the guts in place.
I think the frame is only bonded around the outside edge.

Great tips guys, thanks a lot. I'll post some pictures of how it goes if it works out.

So what happened?
Is it possible to replace the front glass without replacing the digitizer and LCD? I have saw many, many glass only replacements on eBay for it. I want to do it myself. Is it possible? I know it is possible for the galacy necus but as the 4's LCD is on top i was wondering on bidding for a cracked screen one on ebay and fixing the glass only.
As far as I know, the digitizer and glass are glued together pretty tightly, and it's extraordinarily tough to separate the two without damaging either; plus, if separate them you have the constant worry of dust getting in there. It's usually worth it to just buy a glass+digitizer that are glued together.

I have seen videos of people seperating them on the galaxy nexus. Also, if the glass is cracked is the digitizer gone too? because the touch doesnt work and its cracked.
I have done a teardown of the Front display before. It is not easy. Yes the Digitizer and LCD are Glued together and I HIGHLY recommend NOT attempting to seperate them without the proper setup to do so. Once they are seperated it takes a SPECIAL glue to glue the Digitizer to the LCD and it has to be aligned correctly or you have to go through the process again. ALSO the LCD+Digitizer display is GLUED to the Bezel with an RTV type substance. I HIGHLY reccommend spending the extra few dollars to get the 3 piece setup. With that the repair is VERY Quick and easy. Takes about 15 min or so. (Half of which is getting the Back cover off without breaking anything).

But one question. Is the digitizer broken if the glass is broken and it doenst recognie touches?
EDIT: I will buy a broken nexus 4 off ebay for a few bucks and replace the glass so I want to know if it works if you get it. And there is a 80$ difference between the glass and the 3 piece assembly

The Top Glass is the Digitizer, the LCD is just that. I think the iPhone4s/5 has the Digitizer integrated into the LCD and I think this is a process that may start to become commonplace as LG announced that they have a LCD Display with Integrated Digitizer in production now.

Yup You can see the digitited touch grid if you look at in the right angle in bright light.

The Glass IS cheap but they do that so they can trick you into wasting your money. It is not an easy process to do. I have done a replacement on both the fron and back and it was very time intensive. (The front I just ordered the 3 piece and it was quick.) For anyone who has had little to no experience doing display repairs I reccommend the 3 Piece set. If you have SOME experience and have GOOD tools get the 2 Piece. ONLY get the Glass Digitizer IF you have Some professional tools and experience. Also the Special Glue for gluing the Digitizer to the LCD is about $20 by itself so that $15 Digitizer works out to ~$35-40 not to mention if you scratch or break the LCD by accident then you end up having to buy that too. I am not trying to be preachy here but trying to give you the REAL risks and obsticles associated with the repair on the N4. It is a VERY easy phone to repair in general EXCEPT the display. Just get the 3 Piece display and sell the broken one on ebay. It will sell because Professionals (who have the right tools) will grab them and refurbish them and then use them for repairs.
Take a look at this Vid, It's for the iPhone 5 but the process is the same for the N4 and N7.

Hey,
I have nexus 4. The outer glass is cracked, but lcd works perfectly. However the touch is unresponsive. If i buy just the outer glass from ebay and replaced using UV glue. Would the touch function will work? Its strange that all the other smart phones touch function work, if you break the outer glass; but on nexus 4 it stops working. looking forward to hearing your opinion. thank you.

I think the digitizer is so attached to the glass when the glass breaks it breaks the digitizer as well, hence why every n4 LCD that cracks has no touch response, the digitizer is glued to the glass and not the LCD as it is on the galaxy nexus making it a billion times easeyer to just buy a whole LCD unit

It probably is easier to replace the whole unit, however it's too expensive for some people; cheapest unit I've found runs for around 120 USD, 10 times more expensive than just the glass. Specially now that Google lowered the prices, and a 120-130 USD screen doesn't make much sense when you can have a new phone for just 199 USD.
In my case, I cracked the lower corner of the screen and the lowermost buttons don't work (ie: home, back and switch app buttons). Otherwise, the screen works perfectly.
From what I've read so far online, it's fairly hard, although not impossible, to replace just the glass on a screen such as our Nexus 4's. The main difficulty is that the LCD, digitizer (the thing that takes your finger's input, in case you're wondering –as I did– what that is) and the glass are fused together. From what I gather (I am, by no means, an expert on this... take whatever I say with a grain of salt) this means that this partes are glued together with very strong adhesive.
I haven't found any videos or guides for our Nexus, but the process should be very similar to this one for a Galaxy S3. For the time being, I resorted to just rotating my phone when I need the back and home buttons. However, when it's time to buy a new phone I'll try to replace the glass on this one.
If anyone of you guys want to try this, I hope you take a video of the process and share it with the rest of us, unlucky/clumsy Nexus 4 owners.

There are also glass+digitizer+lcd+housing+battery assemblies.
If you replace the digitizer only the screen will not respond the same. My galaxy s3 has touch issues now cause I only replaced the digitizer. Now need to buy a whole assembly

Nexus 4 LG E960 Screen replacement
Well, I was pretty keen on getting a chinese glass/digitizer. The one I had in mind was on ebay.
I was a bit concerned about waiting up to 2 or 3 weeks, but I thought at £28 it would be worth it, as long as I could fit it successfully when it arrived. The alternative was £100 approx from spareslg.com. I was a little concerned about the integrity of the LCD as I was getting some "flowing" around the cracks on the glass. I thought (as was posted earlier) tha it would be no harm in trying to remove the broken glass now, and prep the what was left of the screen for the new glass. If it went well I would know that the LCD was ok. If it went badly however I would loose the opportunity to sell the second hand screen for £20 or so (also posted earlier). I decided to go ahead and strip down the phone.
Getting to the nitty gritty, I warmed up the screen with a hairdryer, inserted a pry tool between the bezel and the glass and started to loosen. I had replaced a glass on a Samsung Galaxy Ace successfully before and this procedure felt very familiar. The procedure actually felt much easier. The glass lifted away from the lcd within three or four minutes, and I continued to heat and ease the glass for only 6 or 7 more minutes. As I was raising the glass while working towards the top of the phone, I noticed that the LCD was leaving the frame as it didn't appear to be held by much, if anything. I thought I would remove what was left of the screen assembly from the frame and continue separating the two parts outside the frame. It was at this point that I noticed that the the LDC panel appeared to be dividing into two parts; like two wafers. Wishful thinking made me hope that what I was seeing was a digitizer membrane or something; but I soon resigned myself to the possibility that the LCD was history.:crying:
I didn't bother to clean off the glue residue, I reassembled the phone and switched it on. The picture below shows that the LCD was ruined. What looks like glass is in fact the movement of the pry tool on the adhesive on the LCD. No flash was used either.
The second photo shows the split LCD. The final photo shows the digitizer grid in the old glass.
If I had the same problem again, I would probably try again. I'd be particularly careful around the edges, not allow the LCD to rise out of the frame (and possibly tear) and take it much more slowly, and possibly use a wire separation tool if around.
Ohgami_Ichiro posted earlier that the costs of digitizer only repairs can go high. If you add fancy glues and tape then it would have cost me at least £50. New at £100 minus sale of old, £15 ?(so net £85) That could be £35 difference, £45 if you skipped the UV glue.
It might not be the last time this phone breaks though!! so savings may increase!
I have no choce now, £100.
Bye the way can anybody recommend a good open case, mine had barely 1.5 ml above screen edge.
Hope you've enjoyed the how NOT to.
Hi dear friends,
Sorry for late answer but i recommend you to take lcd digitizer and replace with cracked one. Becouse generally such chinese complete assemblies (lcd+digitizer and housing) are problematic as lcd quality bit lower than original one. So what to do is; to take digitizer around 20$ (there also which 10$ cost but really lower sensitive digitizer ) and replace it yourself. What else you need for this replacement?
-First you need something thin and sharp like as your grandfathers shaving blade for pry lcd and digitizer. (cost 1$ maybe)
-Then you also need glue cleaner for clean old glue particles, (costs 5$ with uv glue totally)
-uv adhesive for glue lcd with digitizer and (costs 5$ with adhesive cleaner totally)
-3m sticker for attach new digitizer to housing. (2-3$ for piece)
and totally cost max 30$. Maybe you will work more harder but at least you will get phone which which works with original screen with better view. :good:
---------- Post added at 02:42 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:36 AM ----------
Just i need to warn you to definitely use heating gun or hair dryer(at max. temp.) while seperate cracked digitizer from lcd. Otherwise you will crack your lcd too. With my best wishes!!!

This hasn't happened to me yet but now I'm paranoid. Does anyone know of an armor style flip case? I dropped mine the the other day and scratched the aluminium on the bottom right corner. Heartbreaking.
I literally only just got an S-View cover a day ago after being caseless for a while.... I do have a screen protector on though and all I notice is the S-View square does make an imprint on the protector, If I had no protector on then I guess it would make a little scratch, It seems the plexiglass on the S-View is slightly raised/corners a tad sharp. Manufacturing issue most probably.
I have many small abrasions in this square window area. Has anyone received a solution from calling samsung? Verizom won't do squat.

Which S-View are you guys using? I have the wireless charging one and like I mentioned I have not experienced this issue, although time will tell I guess. Also how long did it take for the scratches to start appearing? Edit: Nevermimd the last question, literally a day. Sorry I didn't notice.
I have the normal S-View (Non Wireless) -- The packaging on mine is a little bit older than the other colours that were for sale in Phones4U near me. (mine is black)
I noticed the imprint on the screen protector as soon as I had closed the cover. And felt around the edges which were slightly raised.

Indeed it is, many small abrasions from the two touching repeatedly. I thought the new iteration of gorilla glass was a lot stronger than this, but apparently it is not.

Yes indeed!!!
Got a official S View case (black) put it on my note 3 and within 2-3 wks started noticing a very fine straight line across the screen at the bottom of the s view window, tried rubbing, cleaning, polishing, with NO luck. Bought a spigen glass tr and haven't used the damn S view cover again. Sucks spending $65 for a cover that ruins the glass...
I can tell that its not only the S-view cover that damage the screen, also the original Flip wallet cover damage the screen. The carveing for the visit-cards edge, will also damage the screen. I have a fine straight horizontal line on my screen at the bottom of the visit, card carveing. From the middle and out to the right side of the screen, then vertical all the way up followed again by the visitcard-carveing, then at the top of the carveing I have again a fine horizontal line from the right side of the screen to about the middle of the screen.
Screenshot where I tryed my best to follow where these lines are:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/r4u1k3ydln9yivt/tempFileForShare.jpg
Its pretty much impossible to see unless you got some finger grease on the screen, but with the s-pen it feels like crossing the atlantic....
Question now is, what els is there... If it wasnt a original cover there would be nothing to do...
Hmmm. well I have been using the S-View cover for several months now and my screen has zero scratches. I keep the phone in my bag or trouser pockets and no problems at all.
When I bought the Note 3 on launch day back in September, I asked about the S-View cover and was told stock would be delayed as original stock was sent back to manufacturer because of quality control issues. I am wondering if there was an issue with earlier models of the case related to scratching. Just a theory. I used a standard S-View cover at first then replaced it for the wireless charging version, again this was further delayed before stocks were available so maybe there have been significant improvements.
So, it is possible to have this case protect your phone without the need for an ugly screen protector. I have never used one of those on any of my numerous touchscreen devices over the years, I maintain as long as you take good care of the phone it does not need one. For those that work/live in dusty environments I guess it's a good idea but day to day the S-View case on its own is sufficient in my opinion.
I have the s-view cover for a month now and screen is still absolutely perfect.
Sent from Note 3 SM-N9005
The view cover scratched my phone in just a week, so I had to buy a screen protector.
The scratches are located exactly where the screen of the cover is located.
I guess that's because I've answered the calls with the cover closed, and by pressing it, the existing dust made his job :-\
The Protectors..
Sorry to hear all those screen scratches .. well at least they are not broken into pieces .. I said that because last time I read about Note 3 screen replacement (gorilla glass) it will cost around $250..
The first thing I was proposed by the Samsung sales when I bought Note 3 was to buy a screen (film) protector, I hesitated previously but accept to buy it anyway because I dont have time to argue. At home I didnt really care about the film protector because as soon as I saw Spigen release the Glass.tr tempered glass protector I bought it from local reseller and replace the original film protector with Glass.tr. and then I realized that the old film protector was still reusable so I put the old film protector on top of Spigen Glass.tr.. Lolz but it worked! .. so my phone now using SView cover with double screen protector
I also pre-ordered Spigen S View slim cover to replace my old S View cover (I need it to protect all sides (edges) of my Note 3 as Spigen said Glass.tr will broke if hit by its edges). Soon my Note 3 hopefully will be protected on all corners.. up .. bottom. .. and all edges.. hopefully.. please God bless me.
So my opt screen cracked. Touchscreen is fine, everything works, just a diagonal crack. I've read that the opt is equipped with a screenprotector. How do I remove it? Before I buy a new one I want to make sure that there currently already is a screenprotector. Thanks
It came with a plastic regular screen protector use your fingernail around the edge but it's obvious
Sent from my ONE A2005 using Tapatalk
Okay I was hoping it would be a similar screenprotector as the ones you can buy online (tampered glass). I have removed the plastic when I received my device.
So the only solution for now is to replace the entire screen?
Hi all, any one here having an issue with their tempered glass protector not fully adhering to their device?.. This https://youtu.be/iYmX8hXtXNI is what is happening to mine with a tempered glass protector on it... This is not a one off as I've put two different glass protectors on my device and they both do the same!.. Do you think I can send this back to either manufacturer/retailer for a replacement?..
Thanks for taking and replying ?

I had a similar problem several times in a few minutes I held squeezed with fingers on the screen and I think that helped. So far it is OK sometimes diverges but after 1-2 minutes holding is again stuck, we'll see how long
Afaik this is a common issue that is due to the fact that the edges of the screen are slightly rounded. Because of that, air gets between protector and screen.
Your best bet is to try another protector that is slightly smaller than the screen. Most P9 Lite protectors are designed so they do not cover 100% of the front because of this.

Yes but that is just a simple foil. Not comparable with the protection that a good tempered glass provides.
The factory foil is doing well for me, but it is slowly getting some air bubbles on the sides after 5 months of use.
Would a foil hold better than glass on this device?

The problem isn't the screen per see, it's the screws that hold everything in place.
If you remove the back cover and slightly unscrew the 2 screws by the usb port (or other parts like the top) you will make the screen flat and the protector will fit just fine.
I've done that to my phone and the tempered glass protector fits perfectly now.
