Using Apps2SD>How Do You Know When Updates Come Out For Apps?

I just wiped my phone and see all of my apps there because I installed them before to my sdcard.
But when I go to the Market, they are no longer in "my downloads." So... how do I know if an update comes out for them?

I reccomed reinstalling all your apps as you may have an issue with running them properly. If you paid for an app you can download it again and they will show up in your "my downloads" atrackdog is a 3rd party program that will check for up dated versions of your apps by using a p2p like protocal. It works for apps that you have that are not on the market like wireless tether and g-arcade.
But really reinstall all your apps. Use atrackdog. You can manage them from there.

Just wondering... Won't this happen every time I wipe then? The apps still show up in the "drawer" where all the apps usually are, just not in the marketplace. So... if this does happen everytime you wipe (the phone, ), then what's the whole point of apps2sd? Please clarify. Thank you.

The point is to free up the phones internal memory and keep it from lagging when the free memory gets below 20mb. Also a sdcard class 6 is slightly faster than the internal memory. Besides would you rather have 80 megs total to download programs or 500 megs?I wouldn't want to have to uninstall last.tm to play a game

I get that... but... if I wipe the phone, the apps will show up again once I put the new rom on it. However, there's no way to check if the apps have been updated by the developer since your downloads no longer show up in the market's "my downloads." So... Is there a way to fix that or a way around that..?

Currently there is no known workaround
Use atrackdog. Its available in the market. It won't auto notify you. Personally I run it every few days and it works great. If an update is available you can go directly to the programs market page and install the update.
Edit: you can always reinstall them

start all over i guess.. i do this all the time just to try a rom
format Fat32/Ext2 both it will format installed apps.. ur paid apps will be there regardless

I did this (but didn't start downloading apps yet) and for internal storage in settings>sdcard/storage, it shows internal storage free space is 840mb. Is that normal? Its just reading my ext3 partition as the internal storage,right? I did NOT set up apps2sd files or anything yet, but when I installed one app I looked at the free space again and it went down under "internal storage" instead of sd card. That would be normal EXCEPT for the fact that the internal storage free space is showing 800 something megabytes...

Its a bug in the build. As long as you have a ext2-3 partition. Any Rom that is a2sd enabled should see it automagically.
You did nothing wrong. Install any app and look in your system/sd/app folder and see if it is there. If its a paid app? Check system/sd/app-private

I recommend using the app -BackUp For Root Users- before wiping and flashing a new rom. On the second page is an option to backup and restore your Market Database file. I assume you can probably back up the same file using Terminal but I'm no expert on it, nor do I know the location of the Android Manifest file. If you save this file and restore it after a fresh install it will restore your My Downloads section in the Market and thus show you when updates are available.
As for currently, you'll have to reinstall your apps from the market first.

A2SD/Low Storage Issue - HELP!!!

Can anyone explain to me why when I have a 1Gb Ext4 partition on my SD card with only 367Mb used I am getting Low Storage warning when restoring my apps (143 of them) through Titanium Backup onto a clean HardDroid2 CM7 build with A2SD flashed and confirmed working? When I check it states 199Mb used, 13Mb free but when I use Root Explorer to look into SD-Ext I have App, Private App, Data, Dalvik, etc and all of the app APKs appear to be in there. Am I missing something here? I had the same issue for the first time a couple of days ago when I reflashed Hyperdroid - never had it before, and always do full Task29/fresh MAGLDR/fresh CWM/CWM wipe wipe wipe/etc for each new ROM so SD Ext is always reformatted too. It's driving me nuts

when you install an app, the size of that app gets knocked off the available space, but gets restored when you reboot, so try installing a few, check eth remaining space, then reboot, see if the reported space changes. (Ive never tested it myself, just repeating something i read)_

..also using app2sd and my phone mem seems to decrease also.
When i look into /data and /sdext i see in both the app folder with all apps installed.
but the used space seems to be bigger on the sd-ext.
...when you install e.g. Angry birds with 20 mb you will notice that your internal storage will NOT decrease to that amount: thats the reason why the data folder is smaller than the sd ext.
Seems so that parts of the apps are stored on the phone mem although we ve got app2sd with an sd ext.
Once i tried to delete that data folder, but then all apps stopped working.
In twyeens rom you can move your apps to sd, there was a fix some months ago, so that all apps runs fine from it also e.g. angry birds.

I've xcd35 also known as zte blade. I've not installed many applications, still I see only around 25MB free space in my phone memory

Maybe you should install some app such as file manager from market (I can't provide a link, search "file manager", it's the first result by rhythm software). Then go ahead and select "Storage analysis" after clicking menu. It'll do a complete scan of your phone+SD-card and then shows you the biggest space hoarders.

I installed file manager and it says following,
device total memory: 162.5 M
device free memory : 24.57M
sd total memory: 1.86M
sd free memory: 1.15M
Also, it gives the biggest space holders, but all those are in my sd (like one app tak 570+ MB and my documents take 33M, both are in my sd).
the list all space holders includes the folders in sd card only.. How do I see status of internal memory ?

Open CWM clear cache partition and then advanced clear dalvik cache and reboot it should clear your memory u must be surfing a lot on stock browser if even this didn't solve your problem reset your phone

What is cwm ? And where can I find it ?
Also, what is dalvik cache and how do I clear it ?

The 162.5MB is the total internal memory available for your apps and their data. The 24.57MB is how much of that is free at the moment. When you move an app to the sdcard, some of it is left behind on the internal memory, so you can't get rid of all of it. You can increase the amount of internal memory available by creating an ext partition on your sdcard (though it looks like you only have a 2GB sdcard, so you wouldn't have much space left for music etc. on it) and then using something like darktremor a2sd to move your apps to the new ext partition. This works differently from the normal move to sdcard as it allows you to move the whole app so frees more space.
The other option is repartitioning the internal memory. This means you take some of the space from where the rom is installed, and add it to the data partition so you can make use of it. For this to work well you need to use/be using a custom rom as the stock ones wont fit in the reduced space.

This isn't really a long term solution. The dalvik cache is needed by the phone, so wiping it will only temporarily give you more space until the phone rebuilds it all once you use your apps again. The cache partition is separate from the data partition, so wiping that would make no difference to how much space you have available.

Which ROM you are working on? It seems like you have stock ROM as you are unaware of CWM. If you are using stock rom, you need to switch to any custom rom to flash darktremor a2sd so that you can partition you sd card and install applications on them. You can get complete tutorial on installing CWM and custom rom from cyanogenmod website. You can uninstall bloatwares if there any to free your phone memory.

I can change my sd card to 16 or 32 GB .
That is not a problem..
Now, can you please tell me how do I do external partitioning ?

You need to root and install a custom rom to partition both internal as well as external memory efficiently. You can flash darktremor a2sd script that allows you to install apps on partitioned sd card to your rooted stock rom but it won't work (didn't work for me).
Almost all the custom rom come with darktremor a2sd pre-installed on it. So it is advised to switch to any custom rom. But beware, both rooting and installing custom rom will void your warranty. Once you install a custom rom, i'm sure you will love it.

You can partition the sdcard from ClockworkMod recovery, which you need to flash the custom rom or the darktremor scripts to make use of the ext partition. Some roms come with it pre-installed, others you have to flash it separately.
You can repartition the internal memory by TPT or Windows flasher. TPT is the easier and safer method. From your internal memory stats you posted earlier, it looks like you are stock Gen 2, but download the Mr Pigfish app from the market to check.
If it says you are Gen 1, then you can use one of wbaw's TPTs from his thread on here, or you can use them from my app. Once you use one of these, you will be converted to Gen 2 as well.
If you are Gen 2 already then you are most likely stock Gen 2 and will need to use the TPT's from my app (choosing the stock Gen 2 option when it starts), from the thread I made on here, or by using the Windows flasher.

Here's a tip that I just recently discovered.
Since apps that are flashed in your rom (like Market) cannot be deleted in a conventional sense, a duplicate of the app is created whenever they are updated. I found an app called apps2rom that moves the updated version to the rom, and deletes the old version.
I got a good 10mb from that.

But what is it actually used for?
I use my freespace app to look up how much space I got left. Since it is very limited space on the blade, and I want a couple of apps I need to learn more about this.
These are mine running on ColdfusionX latest release.
Cache 37mb (1 used)
Data 162mb (131 used)
System 220mb (202 used)
Where are the gapps installed? I flashed normal ICS gapps. Are these put in system or data? Both partitions used more space after installation?
Is cache just for the apps running? And like temporarly downloaded files from google play?
How come my data is used up so much? I thought this was all the space for my downloaded+installed apps? I have installed just a few, maybe 15mb worth of apps.
What about system? I was using like 179mb just after install. But now its up to 202 used. Are the 18 remaining MB wasted space?
Also, if I uninstall apps that came with the systems. would the system be more unused and more unused space would be wasted on that partition?

The cache is where temp play store downloads go, but most roms now redirect it to the data partition so it's safe to have a 2mb cache partition like most of us do. The data partition stores the app itself plus all data created by the app. The system partition stores the rom itself, the files needed for the phone to run, the system! Most gingerbread roms you'll be safe to have a 150-160mb system partition and 2mb cache, aloowing a much larger data partition for your apps. your 162mb data partition is very small! so no wonder you're running out of space. To create more data partition space you can install your apps on the sd card, either directly and to .android_secure or to an sd-ext partition so you can mount your phone to the PC and the apps will still run. gapps are installed in the system partition although some you can uninstall and download through the play store and then would be on your data partition. To make best use of your internal memory if you're on a gingerbread rom create a 150-160mb partition and if you're on an ICS rom then 200-210mb is best, so be prepared to give up a bit of data/app space. Also 2mb for cache will always be fine

Backup all your apps+data using titanium or go backup.
Partitioning WILL FORMAT YOUR SD CARD

thanks mate , but will ultimate backup do the same as titanium backup? i dunno how to use those backup tools, after the partition will i just install titanium backup then restore all my apps? how about my mp3s, image and videos?

I recommend go backup. Run the backup, partition the card then reinstall go backup and click the restore button

I see, how about the backup I made earlier using ultimate backup? this way I don't have to reflash a rom?

yeah, well I uh.. got the problem solved using the application called SDmaid, my Sdcard has a free space now. thanks again.

ext3 partition

i am new to android os. few days ago i rooted my phone (y dyos) following tutorials on this forum. i installed cwm and took a backup. i also installed link2sd but somehow my internal memory started getting less and less with every installed app. i was getting a "2nd partition not found" remark in link2sd. so i went to cwm recovery mode and created a 2 gb partition.
but the 2 gb (out of 16 gb total) data i had as well as the apps installed are not showing anymore in menu or sd card. phone memory is as it was though. i dont know what went wrong.. pls help

I'm assuming you have a 2gb primary partition formated to EXT2/3. You put link2sd in internal memory. Give it superuser privileges. From the menu you need to run the recreate boot scripts. Boot scripts won't do anything if there are no apps in your EXT2/3 partition. Apps linked to EXT2/3 will be reported as taking up space in internal for a few minutes after linking. Internal memory may also be taken up when lib and data are not linked.
You might have to master reset and reinstall all your apps so you can properly link them to the link2sd partition.
